July 2010 - a quieter thread for those who can't keep up!

Hi there

I have been on the July thread, but it moves so fast and as I don't have time (or energy being so sleepy), I can't keep up with everyone who is on several times a day! If anyone else wants to join me in a slower thread to share how your pregnancy is developing, feel free!

flowerbee I got my Quinny 3-wheeler travel system thingummybob on the Dutch equivalent of ebay for 125 - she gave me 2 brollies, a rain-cover, a changing bag and all these odds & sods which would've cost a bloody fortune. I'm very chuffed with it - just need to get my own maxi-cosi to slot in. In years to come I will tell little Julian that I had the choice between splurging 900 euros on a pram or taking him on a ski holiday so his mummy didn't go mental! Btw - it wasn't very adventurous riding - I did just sit on her for 15 minutes or so snuffling her neck.

tobago I think avoiding the ironing and hoovering is a very wise move and I'm make a motion to recommend that ALL of us refrain from such duties. In the name of the children or something.

Has anyone else been going swimming? Swimming is my new love - it's also getting my immunity up against child pee. You can jump up and down in a swimming pool - you can lift your legs up to your shoulders and it doesn't hurt - it's a miracle in motion!

HollyFP · 04/05/2010 12:48

Hi All, glad to hear everyone's ok, holiday was fab and totally worth it.

Just been for my 28 wk appointment at birth centre - all seems fine, apart from horrid nasty blood being taken/injections. bleurgh to needles.

am having lots of trouble sleeping now, and also have been getting heartburn, which aint fun. MW told me Gavisgon is safe - anyone else had heartburn problems? must be all those cakes the baby has been demanding...

can't believe i'm only working for another 6 weeks or so - in some ways i can't wait but then i remember what comes at the end of July, and i start to freak out ever so slightly...

skihorse i'm also thinking of starting swimming soon - i'm booked in for a water birth anyway, so would be good to get the baby used to it

Twittle · 04/05/2010 14:39

Hi All!

Holly glad you had a good holiday and that the dust didn't affect your flights - a sun tan sure is a thing that I could do with at the moment! Re. Heartburn I have started to get a bit recently and am wondering whether this means I shall be having a hairy baby in July!!! I haven't been taking anything for it as I seemed to suffered from it before becoming pregnant so I guess I am almost used to it now - although it isn't very nice, unfortunately I find that eating helps...!

ski I have been trying to go swimming twice a week (not very much I know) and am walking everyday but once I finish work I plan to go for a swim at least five times a week (can't wait to have all of that free time........) I agree it's just bliss to feel so light in the water, plus our boiler packed up at home yesterday and so I killed two birds with one stone and went for a swim followed by a hot shower!!!

I am starting to get a little more nervous now that the end is nearly in sight about the whole labour thing and becoming a mother.... anyone else feeling a little like this??? Although on the other hand I am really excited as well, just wondering if I'll cope, I am a big worrier and don't want to be a panicky/worry wart of a mother!!!!!!

randomama · 04/05/2010 15:19

hi all, glad to hear everyone is ok. just had to join in with a moan about heartburn. AGHHHHHHH!!!!!!!! it is awful! I coudn't get to sleep until 4am last night, in large part due to heartburn. If it's linked to hairy babies then I must be having a gorilla! Milk helps but only for about ten minutes then it's back again. will try gaviscon...
other than the heartburn and insomnia all is good. i'm getting really excited about meeting this baby, I keep visualising the birth and it's so wonderful!! I am soooo looking forward to finishing work (only 3 weeks for me!!!).
anyway sending lovely summery happy vibes to everyone (it's so lovely being pregnant in May, makes you feel like a fertility goddess!)
x

skihorse · 04/05/2010 16:02

randomama "Visualising the birth and it's beautiful"? When I visualise the birth it's more "Edvard Munch"!

Twittle I had tears last night because of becoming a real, live mummy. It's a lot to try and comprehend. I'm scared of fucking everything up/breaking him.

I must be the only one of us not getting heartburn right now - I'm also going through a very nice period of NOT getting up for the loo in the night - this has been going on for a month!

I had a midwife appointment this morning and it all went well, uterus is big, blood pressure low, lots of kicks, strong heartbeat.

HollyFP · 04/05/2010 16:09

at skihorse at your non-night time loo breaks. just when i thought they were over...they came back.

LOL at the heartburn = hairy baby. i think it all makes sense now...DH is, ummm, quite hairy...

Twittle · 04/05/2010 16:28

Umm maybe I shouldn't have mentioned the hairy link and heartburn sorry (you could try eating liquorice I have heard that helps)!!

As for the night time loo breaks, looks like it's catching ski as mine also seem to be a thing of the past - having just increased dramatically in the day though, guess we can't have it all .

P.s randomama on 'Visualising' the birth I am far to scared to do that...... but maybe I should start to visualise myself as a goddess of some sort ..... is there a goddess with a huge bust, protruding tummy and with an increasing longing for cheese and crisps (in fact anything that's fattening) if so that's me!!!!

FlowerBee · 04/05/2010 21:09

I?m afraid can?t currently join the heartburn club so I guess I?ll be having a bald baby. Great! To even things out though I am sleeping terribly ? so freakin huge I just can?t find a comfortable position, and I am constantly getting up in the night still to go to the loo.

I it nice being pregnant in the spring though randomama especially thinking about comparing it to being pregnant in the winter ? I feel in sinc with all the ewes and lambs! Not sure about being a fertility goddess though ? unless your are referring to the bulgy ginormous squat stone ones and then yes, that does seem familiar now you mention it!

Am supposed to be visualising the birth in a ?positive way? as have been listening (tho not enough) to my hypnobirthing cd but can?t really get into it at the moment. Really looking forward to meeting babs, though quite terrified about the responsibility (especially when DH is even more petrified, and goes pale and very quiet when the thought dawns on him, eek!).

ski have just bought myself a 2 yo bugaboo cameleon on ebay. Hope I haven?t overpaid as bid £370 in the end. Have yet to pick it up so will see if it?s a bargain or not!

tobago04 · 04/05/2010 21:45

Hi all, glad everyone is ok apart from the heart burn, haven't suffered from it yet, don't think i did with dds either and they were quite hairy!
Finally the thrush has cleared up which has pleased DH ,the only problem now is bump getting in the way!
RE the birth,i'm just in denial i think, can't quite believe i'm going to do it for the third time eekkk!
I'm going to get a quinny 3 wheeler too Ski ,the speedi, this will be our fourth pushchair ,we've got a phil & ted at the mo which is brilliant but is battered to bits.
Pubic bone still a bit tender but hasn't got any worse, did mention it to the doctor but he didn't know what Spd was
Any one got nick names for their bump? we've called ours Floyd {mayweather} as it doesn't stop boxing,DH has even stopped putting his arm round me at night cos it keeps booting him

skihorse · 05/05/2010 07:04

flowerbee I bet it'll be gorgeous - and it'll be in great condition too. They're not used 24/7 are they?

I too think this is a great time of year to be pregnant - I mean... can you imagine wrestling yourself in to tights and proper shoes? With buckles or zips? Or socks? I got my OH to paint my toenails last night which was lovely. It's one thing to have to wear slip-on walking shoes - it's quite another to have to do it without nail varnish!

tobago I'm shocked at your doctor's lack of knowledge!

FlowerBee · 06/05/2010 11:03

tobago my bumps' knickname is "Crumpet" named after the only source of calories i took in when recovering from hyperemesis!

Currently trying to pack hospital bag/getting stuff ready for baby.....but am very confused............

How many baby 1. bodysuits(daywear?) and 2. sleepsuits (nightwear?) do i actually need? And of what sizes?

I currently have
5 x newborn (7lb6) bodysuits
3 x newborn (7lb6) sleepsuits

9 x 0-1m (9lb14oz) bodysuits
7 x 0-1m (9lb14oz) sleepsuits
2 x 0-1m (9lb14oz) romper suits

Most of the babies in our family were born at 7lb to 7lb8oz, so do i need more of the newborn size? People say you don't want to be washing all the time but i don't want them to be wasted. Or do i need to wait to see?

Any advise would be very much appreciated.

HollyFP · 06/05/2010 12:15

flowerbee i am also confused over what i need to take to hospital, and also what i need in general for the first few months. so many things out there, but don't want to spend unnecessary money...that could be better spent on cake
HELP!

Twittle · 11/05/2010 12:31

FlowerBee & HollyFP I am with you on the what to pack....(or what not to pack I'm not very good at travelling lightly...) I haven't actually thought about it yet, that all seems a bit to real and organised but then again 11 weeks tomorrow is D-Day.... can't believe it actually it is not that long away till our babies will arrive and for some of you a lot sooner than me as I am right at the end of the month! So anyway I am not sure what to pack but have noted what you have put FlowerBee but also when do you think we ought to be packing a bag.... about 35 weeks, oohh just got butterflies thinking about it again!!!

Off to midwife tomorrow for check and bloods nothing else to report everyone keeps telling me how neat I am but it's funny as this bump is all new to me and so I feel anything but neat - also as I keep saying there is plenty of time for more expansion !!!

Hope everyone else is well?!

ApuskiDusky · 11/05/2010 15:19

Hi Twittle, I was just thinking how quiet our quieter thread was!

After the potential threat of early labour (now all passed, am all better now), I did pull my finger out and buy a couple of things for the hospital bag, and write a list, and since then I have done nothing. I bought arnica, tea tree oil, flipflops, breast pads and lanisoh cream. Oh, and a tens machine, I hired one last time that was great when it worked but the connection was a bit faulty. Must do a trip to Boots for the maternity pads and newborn nappies. And go in the loft for the baby clothes (or send DH up instead).

And I am now on maternity leave! (Well, I'm now on 5 weeks holiday that I have to take before maternity leave starts). We're off on holiday tomorrow, just to Cornwall, so am looking forward to that.

Hope everyone is doing well!

Twittle · 11/05/2010 16:01

Apuski I thought exactly the same about the thread! It's nice to hear from you and that you are better since your scare! A friend of mine who recently had twins told me to get some Arnica Tablets - apparently they worked a treat for her and so I think I might well be adding them to my list!

I have also recently been given a big yoga ball - apparently to do pelvic floor exercises on??? My DH found it very amusing, think he'll find it even funnier when I attempt to get on it!! Anyone got any ideas about what exercises I should be doing?!

Have a fab holiday in Cornwall Apuski hopefully you should have some dry weather at least... I am off to Cornwall in about a months time to trek around the Cornish Show - can't wait should be fun and I love Cornwall especially the cream teas!!

tobago04 · 12/05/2010 13:41

Hi all,
glad you are ok Apuski, hopefully you can now relax and enjoy your time off
I heard someone else say how good those Arnica tablets are so will be getting them this time, never used them before but anything that helps has got to be good,
Re what clothes to get,I've just got a pack of 7 vests and 7 baby grows[0-3],you get given so many clothes/outfits,especially with your first that it's pointless getting loads, also when he/she arrives i found that i didn't want to dress them in neutral colours, and the supermarkets are open 24hrs now so you can easily get more if needed.
I'm going to get my ball out soon Twittle,I'm just going to use it to sit on,dd2 was back to back and it's supposed to help get the baby into a good position,i hope it works!

tobago04 · 12/05/2010 13:45

Forgot to mention, the other night the baby went mad! It woke me up,it was like something out of Alien!! Really freaky, don't know if it was the glass of coke i had before i went to bed but it was jumping out all over the place anyone else had weird movements?

HollyFP · 12/05/2010 14:39

Hi all, Tobago i've had some very weird movements recently, like it was trying to get out or something . Just completely manic kicks and punches really fast, then quiet....ooooerrr!

I had a weird experience today - i've got so used to seeing my big belly that i actually forgot what was in there, and then got a bit freaked out by the baby suddenly kicking!!

good point re clothes - will just get simple white basic stuff i think and leave the rest to presents!

tobago04 · 12/05/2010 21:29

Yeah it was like it was trying to escape! Thought my last two were active but this was something else Glad i'm not the only one x

WhatSheSaid · 14/05/2010 05:24

Flowerbee and HollyFP it is a bit confusing knowing how many clothes you'll need for the baby - with dd they kept telling me she was going to be big (over 9lbs) so I took quite a few 0-3mo clothes to the hospital thinking she might be too big for newborn size. Of course, she ended up being only 7lb 14 (oh all those accurate growth scans ), cue lots of photos of dd swamped in too big clothes in hospital.

It's also hard to know how long you'll be in hosp, I ended up being in for 10 days with dd tho obviously if things are uncomplicated you should be out sooner than that! You can always have another bag packed at home with extra clothes for you and the baby, so if you do end up staying in longer someone can just bring that in for you.

I really can't remember how many nb size stuff dd had but I think quite a lot, mainly cos people love buying little newborn clothes as pressies - and they do grow out of that size in a month or so, so don't go mad buying nb stuff. Also depends if you have a sicky baby - some people end up having to change the baby's clothes 5 times a day (this is where bibs are very handy). Dd was very non-sicky and would frequently stay in the same babygro for 24 hours (she was hardly running round the garden getting muddy, so I didn't really see much point in changing her!). I could have got by with about 7 of everything, easily, without the need to do lots of washing. You can always buy more if you find you're running out of stuff too often.

As for imagining the birth, I'm imagining a nice calm elective section after my emergency one last time. My mw is trying to talk me into a VBAC but I am not convinced.

randomama · 15/05/2010 16:22

hey all,

well i have 6 days to go before my final final final deadline before i can finish writing until the baby is oooooh at least a year old. hurray!!!! i am so excited about not working (hence skiving now. jeez i only have 6 days left you'd think i could just focus?!)

I have gone mad on ebay buying stuff for this little lass. i did have all DS's things left but I lent them to a friend and she has given me back half as much stuff and not the stuff I gave her. it's all pretty hideous tbh. so i thought i'd buy a few bits and bobs and its escalated into thirty quids worth I guess on the plus side I won't have to do any washing til the baby is about 3 months old...

I feel like I'm getting on better with our MW but was a bit disheartened when she came over the other day and I told her I would be away in London from 4th-6th July (EDD 8th). she looked positively gleeful and immediately started going on about how it was great and I could have a hospital birth in London and I shouldn't worry about missing my planned HB and it's really important not to get too hung up on HB and yes an emergency hospital birth in London would be fine etc etc. When I said well if I don't feel up to it when the time comes I'll just miss it (it's my graduation. I've worked bloody hard for this PhD and don't really wanna miss graduation but...) she was like oh nooooooooooo you really shouldn't miss it, you should really try and make it, don't worry about having a HB much more important that you make graduation etc etc. I just feel like she REALLY doesn't wanna deliver this baby at my house... I genuinely haven't been all obsessy about having a HB, it's just what I did with DS and it was dead easy and nice with him and I'm not a fan of hospitals and I think this birth is gonna be really mellow and lovely so no point in making it a medical issue unless there's an emergency. I don't get her...

Anyway hell's teeth another epic post sorry! If only I could write as many words for my work as quick as this, I'd have finished by this evening....

hope everyone's feeling happy and well

FlowerBee · 18/05/2010 13:14

Thanks for the insider info WhatSheSaid! I guess it's all a bit gueswork anyhow. Not going to go crazy with the NB size, as was reading that babies put on about 5lb a week or something anyway. Plus he'll mostly be wrapped up in blankets for photo ops so it doesn't matter what his fashion sense is underneath!!

What i have been looking for without much joy is some cream/yellow newborn socks. John Lewis has some but all sold out in NB size. Not found any elsewhere yet.

I am getting more irritable about being pregnant, and although i love my baby i am starting to get really irritated by some of the kicking/jabs going on! Especially at night and apparently it's only going to be more pronounced now the space/amiontic fluid around him gets smaller! Who does he think he is? Bruce Lee?

Now have my pram, car seat, baby bouncer, cot (all second hand/ebay), baby changer, moses basket and baby clothes/soft toys and ITS TAKING OVER THE HOUSE! aaaaargh. They were right! And he's not even born yet!

randomama re: ur midwife - it seems everyone has their own agenda in this birthing business! Can you not change to a midwife that's a little more keen on a home birth?

Twittle · 18/05/2010 14:11

FlowerBee I think I need to take a leaf out of your book and start getting organised, I haven't got anything ready yet except some things my sister has passed on to me and they are sat in the spare room gathering dust! When are you due again I think we are around the same time?? I was going to crack on and get sorted in a few weeks time when I finish work (only 3 weeks to go ) as I am finishing quite early on!!!!!

FlowerBee · 18/05/2010 18:11

Hey Twittle my EDD is 1st July though that's based on the 12 week scan, on the 20 week scan (which i think is supposed to be less accurate) the date was estimated for a week later.

However i think i might be early as 1. I have a big exam to take at 39 weeks! and 2. We are moving house at 38 weeks and we still aren't remotely packed (and DH is refusing to employ movers so family/friends/i will be doing it)! So just a little stress involved!

MelissaM · 18/05/2010 21:23

hi all - haven't been around for a while, but all ok with lo. Had app with consultant today (and actually got to her) which went really well. Am 32 wks and baby is head down and 4/5 engaged. Not as scary as it sounds, as still has 4/5ths of way to go before fully engaged, and as 2nd baby likely to bounce in and out for a while ouch!

Re heartburn - didn't have any with dd but she was v hairy (and greasy) so not sure that old wives tale is true, and know someone who really suffered and their dd was completely bald (and still have v little hair at 1 yr) Licorice gave me heartburn other day, but did eat whole bag of alsorts. Rennie is meant to work too

Flowerbee, sounds like you have plenty to me. You will probably be given loads of clothes as soon as your lo arrives.

I finish work in 3 weeks (and have a wks hol after nxt week) can't wait! Then 4 wks b4 dc2 due on 14th July. Better start planning DD's 3rd birthday party though, as don't want her to miss out by my lack of organisation. Wld love to do a soft play centre party, but don't think can really afford it. Hopefully weather will be nice and we can have a party in the garden - already have a bouncy castle and various other outdoor stuff they can plan with.

Good luck with the exam and moving Flowerbee!
