Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

MrsVik - I decided to not get it after reading so much on it from both sides it was coming out of my ears.

decided I was being pressured to have it by scare stories from nurses and gp when they had no evidence to show me. my gp lied to me and told me intensive care units in hospitals all around the country are full of pregnant women inluding our local one. An insider confirmed me they had not one at my local hospital and have not had any to date either! I rang my local PCT trust and they would not give me any figures of how many pregnant women have been hospitalised in surrey. I feel they should make this info accessible to pregnant women if the decision is really ours then i want the facts.

I have spoken to quite a few doctors, half said i do not need it so i will go with that. i know they are looking out for our best interests and i was going to get it but its so mild, i dont hear anything about swine flu at the moment and before i know it my baby will be here so i dont think i am taking a big risk. if i has asthma, was overweight or had health problems then i would not hesitate but I am strong, healthy and very hygenic. nobody gets past a metre in my home before washing their hands.

i dont think anyone who has had it has made a wrong choice but i do feel that we have been scared into taking it. if the sitution changes then i will go and get it as soon as i can but for now I will sit tight.

the whole thing has really annoyed me and ruined weeks of this pregnancy, i got so stressed about it but after i made my decision like the people who got it you can put it behind you and carry on.

CantThinkofFunnyName - you are naughty!... but i feel like that too

MrsVik · 09/12/2009 14:59

londonlottie - I'm not in the UK. We live in Germany, so maybe the advise is just a little different here.

BTW, no idea why I referred to it as the SW injection when I meant SF! Sorry for the confusion.

devotion - glad I'm not the only one!!

Cantthinkoffunnyname - not getting the midday munchies, but I do make a pig out of myself at breakfast! Currently my breakfast consists of

One bowl of weetabix with satsuma or banana slices in it
One yoghurt
Two slices of marmite toast
A choccy from my advent calender

I'm not normally a breakfast person much at all!

ClaireDB · 09/12/2009 15:22

Not long now!

36.5 weeks and I don't think I've had any Braxton Hicks yet. Am I supposed to?

Mama2b5 · 09/12/2009 15:50

Back after a few months and cannot believe we are all now on the home stretch... It seems the other day that we were talking about morning sickness...
Have not quite caught up on the entire thread, but it seems that DH is right and that most people have a hospital bag ready by now. Ours exists in my head only, so perhaps best go and pack- and catch up on rest of the thread...

alibobins · 09/12/2009 17:36

Well back from the hospital and not great news Dd's retina is beginning to detatch they not sure if its a cyst or damaged caused by the uveitits got to back next week but consultant didn't sound very positive

Bump on the other hand is trying to poke his way out of my cervix oh well only 3 more weeks to go 5 at the most.

Ds was born on 28th Dec and he gets seperate presents and a birthday tea although he will only be turning 5 so things might change.

mistletoekisses · 09/12/2009 17:59

Hello everyone!

Mama2b - great choice on the buggy front. That is the one we picked when we had DS and it was simply wonderful! We bought a folding macclaren also for travel etc...but it served us well! Lets just hope DS doesnt kick off too much when the baby is now in it.

Ali - that does sound worrying about your DD, but I know absolutely nothing about what you are describing. Did they touch on the possible implications? Or is that next week?

ClaireDB - I wouldnt worry, I havent had any BH either. Although from the sounds of things, it sounds as though they can be pretty uncomfy, so lets count ourselves lucky!

CTFN - time to make another cake. This one can be the test version.

I cannot believe the rate this thread is moving, we may even need a new one before our bubs start to arrive!

CantThinkofFunnyName · 09/12/2009 18:10

Erm - something is happening here! Think baby must be trying to turn from breech to head down or something. Have had the oddest sensations, movements, pains, vice like grips etc since 3pm when waiting to pick up kids. Not contractions or anything - just something not right IYKWIM! Right - off to DS nativity. Bubs better stay put til tomorrow night!

OP posts:
ampster · 09/12/2009 18:32

cantthink i've had that - really intense feelings like she's rolling and turning and pushing really hard against the sides of the womb or whatever. hope she's getting into position, last time they checked she was still transverse!

devotion · 09/12/2009 18:41

CantThinkofFunnyName - baby probably is turning. I was breech 34 weeks with dd1 and she turned one evening - it was the weirdest sensation.

londonlottie - your pram is a great choice, no other double buggy beats it. my sil had one for her twins and it took her for walks. I would love a single one but they are just too expensive for our budget.

RE: the hand washing, we always wash our hands as soon as we get home anyway but since swine flu came about and i have decided against the jab I ask everyone to wash their hands as they come in and they are fine about it. To be honest I reduced friends coming over and stopped playdates now for the time being.

I agree with you about not over-disinfecting everything and alot of germs are important for our immune systems especially kids. My aunty is so over the top with cleanliness and all her kids have allergies, their immune systems probably hardly came in contact with any to build immunity.

Trust me I am not that house proud but do my best I also use alot of ecover products and they are not as strong as the usual household products.

Mama2b - thank you for your sweet message, I really hope i do pass because I can not afford to keep paying for lessons and hate doing it being pregnant. Once the baby is born it takes awhile for breast feeds to establish and I hate leaving babies so young.

Those prams you chose are very stylish, I like the way you can have them up high - no bending!

whensmydayoff · 09/12/2009 20:17

Hi devotion I was amazed at your GP lying about the pregnant woman and hospital situations.
Makes me wonder. Every surgery gets bonus related pay for vaccine uptake, wonder if thats behind it!!
I was constantly starting new threads asking if any PG woman had had swine flu and there was never much coming back. Your right, it is the one piece of info that would help make a decision.
Gawd, if your GP was right, even I (the anti vaccine pest ) would have got it.

As it is, when we had DS checked for SF the other night, the doc gave me a lecture then said, mind you, it takes 3 weeks to work so there's probably no point.

Someone else was swithering about getting it with 2 weeks to go (kak memory and Ive just read it). Probably no point now.

My poor DS has been sick twice today just from coughing so much, is constantly struggling with runny nose and actually wee'd himself coughing. Been in pants for 6 months now. He thought the world had ended for some reason .

I have to say, if he had a temp, id be thinking SF. Sudden onset of sore throat, coughing, sickness, diahhrea (cant spell).

No amount of hand washing is going to save us now, He is a coughing, sneezing machine!

Good luck Monday Devotion. fingers crossed (and legs, ha).

mrs vik Thats one hell of an impressive breakfast. Im way overeating at lunch time. I usually scoff a slice of bread and butter whilst making our lunch (usually consisting of more thick bread), then have tea and biscuits after it !

Alibobins so sorry re your DD's eye appointment. Can they not do an op to repair?

cantthink whats happening there then?? Looking forward to checking in on you tomorrow, ha.

For anyone else, what does it feel like when the head is engaged? I suddenly feel like the baby is weighing in at 2 stone and leaning on my pelvis. Im walking like John Wayne and bending is now out of the question!

I know this is my second [blush} but I was 37 weeks when he was born and I honestly can't remember!

alibobins · 09/12/2009 20:28

No one explained anything much but think they were trying to avoid my questions. From what I've been reading online they can operate to save Dd's vision. It's all new to us as she was only diagnosed in summer its a kind of artharitis in her eye she has weekly doses of chemotherapy to try and control the inflamation think this must be a complication from the condition but don't really know.

ctofn told you it's your turn next

CantThinkofFunnyName · 09/12/2009 21:08

Just returned from nativity play and breathed way through contractions every 5 mins for 2 hours. Still coming but not v v painful so I don't think its the real thing... however, probably off to delivery unit in a mo for a spot of monitoring purely because of baby position and don't want this happening in middle of night!!

Alibobins - you had SOOOOO better not be right!!

OP posts:
alibobins · 09/12/2009 21:26

oooooooohhhhhhhhhh good luck

MissMarjoribanks · 09/12/2009 23:24

It's all gone quiet - is CTOFN going to come back from hospital somewhat lighter? Seriously though, hope all is OK.

Thomas update - other than being the most beautiful thing I've ever seen he's 8 days old today. He came off the heated cot yesterday and is just in his clothes with blankets over him. His jaundice is also better though they're keeping an eye on that as it could worsen again. I've also been putting him to the breast over the last couple of days and this afternoon he really went for it and had a good feed for over 20 minutes. He wasn't so keen in the evening when I tried but he was a lot more sleepy then.

We haven't been given a possible date for bringing him home; they said when he was born to aim for his due date, which was 15 January. From what I've read of 33 weekers though, at a good weight like Thomas' they are often home in their 36th week, so he might be home before Christmas. Really, I just want whatever is best for him, so if its a trip to SCBU on Christmas Day, so be it.

SF jab - I had mine whilst in labour though of course I didn't realise at the time. I went for it because I was worried about the possibility of pneumonia, given my much reduced lung capacity. I don't wish to scare anyone, but one of the babies in SCBU with Thomas is in only because her mother is in intensive care with pneumonia (though I don't know whether it started with swine flu) and she was born by emergency C-section, so clearly there are such cases. Although my jab was clearly fairly pointless given when I actually had it, having heard about this case has made me think I absolutely made the right decision.

Anyway, another trip to the milking parlour breast pump awaits, so night all.

CantThinkofFunnyName · 10/12/2009 00:13

I'm back - baby still inside ! Contractions were ongoing and noted on the monitor (phew not a fraud) but then stopped, as I knew they would! Good thing was I got a scan though! Saw lovely baby face almost head down and the Dr said, ah, so you did feel baby turn today and then whilst she was doing the scan, we miraculously watched baby go straight back to transverse!!!! Which of course led Dr to tell me I have to go back in now every few days for positioning scan. If baby keeps moving around they will likely admit me for an even earlier c/s due to unstable lie and potential problems with the cord. Of course, should I get any more contractions, waters go etc - I have to go back in again.

But for now, I get to see DD's nativity tomorrow!

Night night

shinybaubles · 10/12/2009 07:19

Wow ctofn that's exactly what I had with ds except he was breech and transverse all the time. In fact they wanted to keep me in until the csection date for over 3 weeks in case I went into labour. Anyway I refused and stayed home until the csection. And now it's happening again with this little one, and it's a very odd feeling when they change position.
Well it seems like you will be next .

sockmonkey · 10/12/2009 07:46

ctofn sounds like quite a day you've had there! Hope baby says put for a bit longer. Enjoy DD's naivity.

ali hope your DD is ok, and the docs are able to help her. Must be a massive stress for you all.

MrsMB Thanks for the update. Thomas sounds to be doing really well...and so do you!

The car broke down yesterday. Great! Mechanic is coming to look at it today. We are really hoping it's something cheap, DH had sold a bunch of stuff on eBay to give us some funds for Christmas, but we are betting it all gets used up on repairs.

shinybaubles · 10/12/2009 07:57

sockmonkey I can sympathise our boiler gave up a week ago and we were told by the engineer it's 30 years old - he managed to patch it up but it will die in the next few months and they they cost thousands here which we don't have .

alibobins I hope things get better for your daughter.

Mrsmarjoriebanks sounds like Thomas is doing really well .

Morning thanks for well wishes for Dd it doesn't cause her any discomfort she has wore glasses since she was 3 and its only the right eye thats effected and she's still got 60% of her vision.

Really thought we wouldn't here from you ctofn but still sounds like you could be next

I had a few contractions that woke me in the night but nothing since about 4ish.

Glad to here baby Thomas is doing well can't wait to snuggle this little one.

I'm planning on breast feeding this one but should I get some formula incase?

shinybaubles · 10/12/2009 08:10

londonlottie I must admit to having a fab mil. But have terrible family members on my side of the family to the extent that I cut off all contact with most of them except my sis.
When she sends you an email - you don't have to answer her questions, but maybe just reply with a very generic email of the twins are doing well etc, weather and really trivial stuff. Ignoring her totally may be rude so an inoffensive email may be the answer, I fear that the more you give in to her the worse she will become.
Is she planning on visiting when they are born?

alibobins · 10/12/2009 08:11

Got no advice for you london as my mil is fantastic and we are closer than me and my mum. All I can say is do whats best for you Dh and little twinnies

CantThinkofFunnyName · 10/12/2009 08:23

Lottie - Jesus H Christ!!! Sorry but your MIL does sound beyond belief!!! I would suggest this is something your DH needs to handle although quite how, I'm not sure. I'd just be hopping mad, like you probably are and would not want to have anything to do with her. But then again, I'm a fairly black/white person that's not naturally forgiving

Ooops - better quickly take kids to school
