Jaysfourth · 09/02/2010 14:57

I think birthplans are very good for keeping you sane, as long as you know that they HAVE to be flexible and that things can change very quickly before and during labor. Not always of course and if all goes according to your birthplan, lucky you! swordfishtrombones, i to have read that(re dignity), remind me to collect mine this time round!

Cant help but echo the advice re maternity bras. Mothercare were very helpful for me, although didnt have a very good choice and limited in sizes, but i guess it depends who you get on the day. You do change size, sometimes back size sometimes cup and sometimes both, so its worth getting it checked out

Ladyrabbit, glad your scan went well, will your next one be the 12 week one or do you have any others scheduled before then?
re birth not being painful.....did i say that? i am sure i didnt(!!) i think i said something about enjoying it, which i did, i prefer labor than the nine months of pregnancy TBH, but thats not to say its not painful!!!
My third birth was by far the best, i am hoping the next one follows suit

some more iPhone info for you....

week 9

baby-
size of a green olive....
.9 inch
2.0g
embryonic tail disappears,
eyes are fully developed,
the head is still larger than the rest of the body
hands and feet look less like 'paddles' and have fingers and toes forming.

you-
waistline expands (i could have told you that)
blood volume increases by 50% in order to help uterus grow as well as to help carry nutrients and oxygen to your baby
as a result, your heart beats faster and you may find yourself breathless a lot more frequently!

bananastew · 09/02/2010 15:19

Hi everyone! I too feel horribly sick and so so tired! I've cancelled tea out with my friend for the second time! I just can't face it! I'm a terrible friend and also a terrible mummy! Poor ds is getting the brunt of my tiredness . I just keep snapping at him. he's only 18m, its not his fault!! Maybe I should put myself on the naughty stool!

swordfishtrombones the push like you're doing a poo advice was what my mum told me. The best advice anyone gave me. Even though ds was assissted by ventouse, that thought made things so much easier. The MW said i would have had to had an emergency section if i hadn't been such a good pusher!!

LadyRabbit · 09/02/2010 15:39

Swordfishtrombones OK, looks like I'm going to have to brave my fear of the high street and get my bum into one of the stores you ladies have mentioned. I did buy some normal bras in a cup size bigger than usual, but they are already too small and uncomfortable so I'm going to do it properly, instead of a Primark 2 for 1 special. (I cannot resist.)

mellymooks the message I'm getting from everyone is "Birthplan? What birthplan?Ha ha ha!" so I'm going to a) operate in deep denial about how babies physically make their way into the world and b) be open to every and any option. (Personally, I wish someone would hurry up and invent an epidural where you wake up 2 years later and baby's been breastfed, potty trained and can actually tell you what they'd like for dinner.) However, push like it's a poo is definitely top of my list now.

Jaysfourth That's it for scans until 12 weeks now. This little one is growing really well, (my last two pregnancies the beans that didn't make it were measuring small from the off) plus I feel TERRIBLE which is WONDERFUL!!! (I just managed to keep down a hot cross bun and a cup of tea so excuse the momentary euphoria.)

Stay well everyone, thanks for all the helpful advice. Haven't told a soul except for DH and health professionals, but it's nice to be able to share this with you. x

SkaterGrrrrl · 09/02/2010 17:15

I also feel like a terrible friend, I am constantly cancelling on my mates and trying to get out of going to the pub with them. I hope they will forgive me when I make my announcement, but right now Im just too tired!

Last night I slept for 12 hours!

Jaysfourth · 09/02/2010 20:12

12 HOURS!!!!

i havent slept that long since 9 months before my first was born!!!!! get it while you can

comixminx · 10/02/2010 08:55

I must admit that the whole bra-measuring thing is a bit of a turn-off - I've heard lots of stories (including a Which? report) about how rubbish so many of the people doing the measuring are. But I still fit into my (fairly small) bras and looking at my mum and sister, I don't feel I'm that likely to go up in size hugely! Let's see though.

Love2Dance · 10/02/2010 13:39

Tits will grow! My normal size is 32B. By the time I was 9m preggers I got to 36D. After birth and ribcage back down and during breastfeeding, I was a 32E!

M&S measuring whilst pregnant was surprisingly below average, considering their marketing reputation on bra fitting. Most of their maternity and nursing bras start at 34 so I was just told the equivalent of: "34A is the equivalent of 32B" or whatever.

Their maternity & nursing bras are nicer than they used to be. Mothercare's look nice too. If anyone's going to splash out post baby (when feeling like a big fat wobbly jelly) Elle McPherson nursing bras are lovely.

But still best to get fitted I think, once you notice the difference.

Love2Dance · 10/02/2010 16:56

AAArrrrgggghhh work stress...under a bit of pressure at the moment and need to sound off. Like everyone working in the work place or in the home it just gets very stressful sometimes. My job can be up and down stress-wise and right now is an up, up and away time.

Breathe deeply...

Those 6 ginger biscuits helped a bit...

Gi1da · 10/02/2010 17:06

Poor you Love@Dance - I'm in the same boat, I've been forcing myself to do deep yogic breathing (!) at my desk today (instead of swearing like a sailor and slapping the keyboard from here to next Tuesday as usual) in an attempt to keep my stress levels down. I'd kill for a gingernut though - good thought!

Also just wanted to log in and say how brilliant it is to be able to share this with you all - especially in these early days when no-one in real life knows why we're going slightly round the twist... Much appreciated - a virtual toast with glass of virtual wine to you all!

OhFuck · 10/02/2010 18:25

Clocking in again. We were away with family last week, and had a great (if sober) time.

Booked in with MW today, and got a surprise because she's a client of mine! She's covering for the usual MW who's off sick for a long time - I hope she's better soon, both for her sake and selfishly because she was great when I had DS.

High hopes for a VBAC and asking nicely for the same consultant!

Still waiting for a scan date and feeling really nauseous much of the time. Overeating because if I don't have any food for a couple of hours I feel like puking. Went to bed with a whole packet of cheese thins the other night and by morning there were only a few left

I have also gained a ton of weight already and my BMI is very high so got to start walking and watch my food intake ... so hard!

popsy1 · 10/02/2010 18:48

Hello ladies.

love2dance also had a very stressful day!! Came home and blubbed over hubby Also have a box or ginger biccies in my cupboard theyve been a god send.

Ohfuck i seem to be eating loads as well as i seem to get sick when i haven't eaten in a while. Can only stomach toast, bread, crisps and other rubbish foods. Jeans are already tightening! Need to start walking again as well but so tired when i get home from work.

Quick question ladies, i have my hair booked to be coloured next week, i will only be 8 weeks. Do you think i should rearrange till after 12 weeks?? Grateful for any advice.

xxx

Love2Dance · 10/02/2010 20:14

Cheers Gi1da! I raise my (virtual) glass of Prosecco to y'all.

Ohfuck lol about cheese thins. We must need the energy to be all wanting carbs like this (wouldn't mind if I was skinny to start with - sigh).

Popsy1. It's a really individual choice. Is it lots of chemicals or something like a vegetable dye? You could ask your hairdresser.

Last time round I waited until 12 weeks to process my hair. My hairdresser advised me against doing anything with chemicals in the last month too, but who knows? As long as the smell isn't too toxic I reckon you're ok. It's unlikely that any toxins will go into your blood stream.

Monstermuncher · 10/02/2010 20:50

Evening all,

Rubbish day at work here too, sooo busy and so now I'm just flumped out on the sofa in sheer exhaustion with glass of milk - I am pretending it is Baileys .. mmmmmmm

Ohfuck you have got me fancying cheese thins now

love2dance I think that ginger biscuits are overrated but I had can of ginger beer the other day and it was amazing!

Sadly I'm just not able to stomach many healthy foods at the moment, no wonder I can't fasten my jeans up ..

comixminx · 11/02/2010 08:00

Morning,

It's busy at work for me too - I'm working a different set of hours right now to work with some international colleagues who are based 6 hours ahead of the UK... I'm not shifting my whole working day by 6 hours but am getting up later (yay!) but working till later (boo, especially when I have to start again after a break). On Monday I was asked if I would be in on an hour-long phone call starting at 10 pm - which I did do in the end - went to bed straight afterwards, heroically managed not to fall asleep during it!

But the weekend is getting nearer and I'm on holiday next week so it's all doable.

bananastew · 11/02/2010 09:50

How can it be possible to sleep for 10 hours and still wake up exhausted????? I can't keep my eyes open past 8 and ds wakes me up at 6 and I then spend the rest of the day fighting to stay awake!!!!! But I'm not moaning, honest!

On the bra theme, with ds i bought the asda non wired t-shirt bras. they're a lot cheaper than M&S or mothercare. Also if you google it you can find how to measure yourself! If i was clever i'd put the link but I'm not. Sorry!!

Love2Dance · 11/02/2010 11:25

Moan away Bananastew, moan away. It's one of the things we're here for .

Thanks for Asda tip.

Swordfishtrombones · 11/02/2010 13:16

Just had my booking in appointment with the midwife and it is starting to feel a bit more real now. I had my bloods taken and about 100 pages of forms to fill in. Sadly 11 wks is apparently still too early to hear a heartbeat so I will have to wait until wednesday for my scan.

Has anyone else been offered the combined test so you have the nuchal scan and a blood test at the same time, and they post the results to you once the combined risks have been calculated? It's a new one for me. I really don't know where I stand on all the tests. Personally I could think of hundreds of things far worse than Down's syndrome anyway and I dislike the way it is singled out as a thing to test for. On the other hand it's nice to get a good result and be reassured. I don't really know what I'd do if I got a 'bad' result. One step at a time I suppose.

On a totally different note, has anyone else claimed one of the deeply disappointing Bounty packs for new mums yet? I got one the other day from Lloyds (coupon from Emma's Diary or similar tosh) and let me tell you it is NOTHING like the picture! There was one nappy and a small tube of cocoa butter for stretchmarks, and the rest was all marketing leaflets! I have another coupon for a pack from Boots or Tesco and I'm undecided whether to get it or not. Humph. I think they could at least add a pack of ginger biscuits or some chocolate!

SkaterGrrrrl · 11/02/2010 13:41

Hello fellow big-boobed cracker-eaters!

Swordfish I have my booking in appointment in 10 days time so will let you know what tests I am offered.

I am basically killing time until I can start telling people our news... I'm over keeping it a secret!

I've signed up for NCT classes, is anyone else doing them? Not cheap but I reckon as well as the actual course info, meeting other new mums in the are will be invaluable.

coppertop · 11/02/2010 14:06

I'm rapidly coming to the conclusion that the real reason for my increased norkage is to ake a handy ledge so that I can catch the cracker crumbs before they hit the floor.

Still no booking-in here (8wks) but the MW has phoned to say that they are considering running a second clinic as their usual one is completely full. So I might not have to keep trekking over to the hospital after all. Yay!

I agree about the sleep, Bananastew. I've been sleeping more than ever before but I'm sooooo tired.

bloominnorah · 11/02/2010 15:31

I think I have a serious obsession with McCoys crisps...cant get enough of them and they seem to help keep the sickness away

Ive got scan on Saturday so hopefully they will see a heartbeat. I went last Friday but all we could see was the gestation sac and what looked like baby, but not clear enough for a heartbeat..so fingers crossed!

MW asked if I would have neuchal fold test done at 12 weeks, which I'm going to do (Im nearly 36) and will have amnio if results need it too.

bellabelly · 11/02/2010 18:47

I can't remember who mentioned dentist appts the other day but whoever it was THANK YOU! Had my appt today to fix my dodgy tooth and am soooo pleased to have got it sorted out. Best thing is that my maternity exemption card came through the other day so I didn't have to pay anything for getting it sorted . Have made an appt with hygienist too [polishes halo].

Still feeling sick but just in mornings now and am so bloated that I have been wearing maternity trousers today. SUCH a relief, can't tell you how comfy I've felt not having waistband issues. Even my DH (who is normally v flattering) told me all my clothes looked too tight the other day . Will have to go through all my old mat stuff and see what is still wearable - it's all been shoved in a drawer and forgotten about, thank goodness I was too lazy busy to ebay it all before xmas!

Hope everyone's scans/mw appts all going well!

popsy1 · 11/02/2010 19:28

I had the bloods done with my last pregnancy and as they came back with a high % risk of downs, we had the amnio. I ended up getting an infection and going into premature labour, and loosing our baby (he was perfect). This time we will be having the nuchal. I haven't got a clue what we will do this time round if results are high.
Decided to postpone my hair app. Just have to put up with my roots

Still eating loads of bread, biscuits and crisps.
Hoping my boobs wont grow much as big already!!
xxxx

bananastew · 11/02/2010 20:16

Popsy1 Thats awful, you poor thing!

I think the single Downs and Spina Bifida out because they are ones that they can test for. I'll have the blood test but the nuchal fold test isn't routinely offered here.

I've got my scan and booking in appointment on Tuesday. Excited and nervous all at the same time!!

popsy1 · 11/02/2010 20:30

Yeah its been a really tough year bananastew. The hospital made it all sound 'routinr' and the risk 'minimal' Gunna be a nervous wreck this pregnancy! So apologies in advance ladies

We are going for a early scan next monday, which has only been offered as we needed fertility. The only routine scans in my PCT are 12 and 20wks. The nuchal one we will have to pay for. Think its £170. Its alot but i couldn't go through what we went through last year again. Fingers crossed it'll all be perfect
