J&BsMummy, made me feel a bit better about the epidural. On the one hand I really want one but my main concern is do you have to have a catheter? and does it hurt going in? I really am a first class baby when it comes to hospitals and for some reason completely don't fancy the idea of a catheter! It's really weird about your dreams, the first one being so close to what actually happened. Im finding I'm having dreams most nights about giving birth and the new baby but most of them are so weird there's no way they'll come true (well I hope not!)

jessicaandbumpsmummy · 12/07/2005 17:43

dont worry about the catheter - you dont feel a thing, and even when they take it out you dont realise! its quite funny to see how much wee comes out!!!

I only had mine in for the duration of my epidural but it was such a relief.

My dreams are scaring me, especially as i dont want a cs..... we shall see what happens!

BigBumpBonnie · 12/07/2005 17:51

thanks JM. I suppose when I'm actually in the throes of labour a catheter will be the least of my problems! Let's hope your dream about the CS won't become a reality. We're all going to have wonderful, natural, pain free births!!!!

jessicaandbumpsmummy · 12/07/2005 17:53

HA HA HA - we wish!!!

You dont feel the catheter because they put it in after yuo have had the epidural and take it out just before the full effects wear off..... no worries..... its easy!

fastasleep · 12/07/2005 18:32

I hope it's like my dream... I have this rose tinted one where I get into bed in a white night dress and go 'ooohhhh ' and then someone hands me a little pink baby dressed in a little lilac dress all perfect and clean and sweet smelling and quiet..... lol I have gone mad!

Had a stonking dream the other night, DH was in army uniform, we were in the back of a landrover....blimey! I had 3 big O's and woke up thinking it was real!! I hope I haven't been sleep-walking..

DH bought me cookies so I'm feeling much better

My birth plan's boring it says 'Don't you dare take me to hospital, and listen to DH about the drugs as I've made him promise to refuse for me even when I beg...' sigh

Moomin · 12/07/2005 19:02

birthplan!

I may as well spend the time writing a list of all the famous blokes I'd like to shg if they came knocking on my front door, offering it to me on a plate, as that's more likely to come true!! I found birth plan no.1 in my old NHS preggers book last month; it did* make me laugh.

No offence to those who swear by them or find them a great comfort, btw!

jessicaandbumpsmummy · 12/07/2005 19:03

oh and my first pirth plan was "take it as it comes" - best way in my opinion!

BigBumpBonnie · 12/07/2005 19:06

know what you mean, Moomin, but I find writing what I want to happen sometimes convinces me it will happen. A load of b*ocks I know, but can help psycologically (sp!!)

Moomin · 12/07/2005 19:10

agree BBB. It can help calm you to visualise a good experience. I just laugh now when I see me having written all this claptrap about a birthing ball, and candles and low lighting when in reality it was in a brightly lit theatre. Having said that, though, I'm definitely hoping no.2 birth is similar to no.1 (i.e. elec section) as it was so calm and controlled (and painless!!)

ButtonMoon · 12/07/2005 19:25

I had an epidural with DD and am the first to recommend!! Mine was a walking one which was fab as there was no pain but I could still feel where and when to push (you feel the tightening of the contraction and the baby's head) My worst nightmare is getting to hospital this time and they tell me I can't have one!! My birth plan will say something like "Play it by ear-will try any pain relief except pethidine-would like a mobile epidural if necessary-want skin to skin and would like to breastfeed as soon as" Oh and PS. Husband is to stay away from the 'action' end this time.

Moomin · 12/07/2005 21:21

remember in my antenatal classes first time round asking the midwife to tell us more about mobile epidurals only to be told by her they didn't exist! This is despite dh working in theatres with countless anaesthetists who told us otherwise... think the midwives just didn't wnat us thinking it was an easy option. (this coming from a young single childless midwife)

Elf1981 · 12/07/2005 23:30

Oh, wish it would cool down for night time. Am so hot!
Last night had most bizarre dream - was at work and boss asked me to count some foreign currency, I was getting mad as he'd mixed all the notes together, then the ship I was on was under attack (odd as I dont work on a ship!) so I threw some hockey puk looking things over board and they were really heavy. The third drifted under the ship and blew up, the ship rose into the air and back down again, everything started shaking and my boss's boss sacked me for being irresponsible. OH MY GOD! So glad I wasn't at work today, would not have coped with fear of being asked to count currency and being transported to a ship!

Birth plans - I haven't written one yet. Will be 27 weeks tomorrow so only got 13 weeks left til due date so must consider writing one, esp as my first. Might just write "let me scream, no big needles, keep DH at top of bed at all times"! Thought of epidural scares life out of me - had a friend who had a bad experience, they basically punctured too far and some spinal fluid started leaking out and she was in hospital for a good while. But then I'm sure that the pain will be that bad that I wont give a monkey's and I'll be begging for an epidural!!

Piggiesmum · 13/07/2005 08:11

No birth plan here either. Hoping to go as natural as posible with minimal pain relief but as this is my first I'm probably living in fantasy land. Not making any definate plans until i find out whether I'll need a c-section or not.

As for bizarre dreams.....
I dreamt I was on holiday with people from work. We were staying in a house (which does happened to be exactly the same as my house as they do in dreams). I was on duty overnight as alot of the smokers would get up in the night, go outside for a smoke and forget to lock the doors on the way back in. Anyway it was really hot and I thought everyone had gone back to bed so was wondering around with nothing on but a pair of shorts and suddenly from the back room one of the younger lads appeared and saw eveything. I turned away and we both pretended he hadn't seen anything, then he went to bed and all i could hear was him roaring with laughter from one of the bedrooms.

Just glad i woke up before it got to the part where he told all his mates!!!

triceratops · 13/07/2005 08:37

This is my birth plan which I adapted a bit after last time. I think it is a good idea to keep things flexible and not to stipulate the type of night dress you should be wearing

Things that I like the idea of
Home birth
Water birth
Active birth ie moving around as much as possible
Having a quiet place to give birth
Labour on hands and knees or squatting
Baby skin to skin as soon as possible after birth
Latching on asap
Food available soon after birth
Sports drinks and ice available in labour
Clean nightie for after birth
Oral vitamin K
midwife to cut cord
mum and dh as birth partners

Things that I would rather avoid if possible
Drugs esp pethidine
Unnecessary monitoring
Intervention
Frequent checking of cervix
Strangers in the room
Episiotomy
Caesarean
Stitches

fastasleep · 13/07/2005 09:18

That's what mine's like triceratops! I don't think I'm going to actually wear a white nightdress.. lol!

I had a funy dream too, well I don't remember it but I woke up to DH shaking me this morning as I yelled 'PISS OFF PISS OFF PIIIISSSSSS OOOOFFFFFF!!!' I was so embarrassed!

jolovett · 13/07/2005 10:16

Dreams - opportunity would be a fine thing - it's impossible to sleep in the caravan in this heat! So tempted to put the gazebo up and sleep in the hammock! Never mind - we've almost finished the bricking on our house - just a day or two left and it should be done - panic about not being ready in time is starting to calm down.

Haven't really thought about birth plan - personally find them a bit silly - I imagine the last thing I'll be worrying about when I'm screaming in pain is whether the lighting is right or silly details like that. Just hoping to turn up, have some gas and air and get on with it. Nobody can predict what's going to happen so why spend so much time thinking about it when everything can change so quickly.

My sil, boyfriends aunty just gave birth to a little girl weighing 10lb14 - aaaarrrgggghhhh! Don't fancy that much!

It's been heaven this week - only working 2 days now so taking it a bit easy. Nearly collapsed doing dishes in this heat though.

2 days til the 4d scan - sorry to keep on about it but it's all I can think about!

Hope you all keeping well in this heat - glad I'm not going through it on my own.

nervousmum2be · 13/07/2005 10:24

Hi All, back from the Lake District, wearing a rather fetching neck brace - thanks to that car accident last Thursday:-( Still, at least Baba is ok

We too have gone 'Mothercare crazy' whilst away, and bought lots of practical baby stuff (moses basket, cot, etc) alongside some not-so-practical but very cute stuff (ie. little Winnie the Pooh outfit) - i can't believe i've only got another 10-12 weeks to go - Panic is beginning to set in

As for birth plans, not written one yet. As i'm likely to have to have a C/section i figured i'd just take things as they come.

Finally, (long post nearly over! Sorry, i had lots of catching up to do), i woke up this morning with a stitch type pain on my left side, upper bump. Normal gorwing pain, or something to be concerned about?

nervousmum2be · 13/07/2005 10:25

sorry, that should be 'growing pain' - must invent a keyboard for pg swollen fingers

fastasleep · 13/07/2005 10:28

I get bump stitch like that if I walk too much, I don't think it's a thing to worry about... I bet that neck brace is uncomfortable in the heat!!

Can't wait to hear about the 4d scan!

jolovett · 13/07/2005 16:41

I get stitches all the time - when I'm walking too fast or move too quickly. I don't think it's anything to worry about.

I forgot to ask earlier - is anyone getting any silly old wives tales warned to them?
My nan gave me a row the other day for putting my hand to my face when I was shocked at something. She reckons it will mark the baby. She swears blind that when she was carrying my uncle, she was walking past a fruit shop and a pineapple rolled out in front of her and scared her. She says she put her hand to her face in shock and when my uncle was born he had a birth mark shaped like a pineapple on his face which faded by the time he was one.

This story had me rolling around for ages!

fastasleep · 13/07/2005 18:12

What a brill story! I haven't had anything like that apart from mums mad 'lucozade makes all the pregnancy woes disappear' thing.. swear she's just trying to kill me subtly! I wonder if it's true lol... a pineapple!

I'm always putting my hand to my face when Theo does something shocking, I'm sure my little one won't have birth marks shaped like little boys...

SusiS · 13/07/2005 19:56

hey girls!! nice heat, eh!
oh well, better than rain all the time!

had our first session of nct antenatal class! was brilliant
7 nice pregnant ladies, huffing and puffing, and asking weird questions - it's especially for 2nd timers; so we all are in the same boat!
was really funny

we've been asked to tell our previous birthstory - and i again burst into tears
still having troubles to even think about it; let alone talk!!!
but the girls and the teacher were really nice and told me 'we'll get you through this'!!

besides that not much happening.
i still think bump is growing by the day
weighed myself yesterday and i put on 13kg so far
must be all that lovely chocolate and icecream bubs (not me of course) is demanding

still that flippin pain in pelvic bone area. turning around in bed is a struggle. and it doesn't help that ds always wants me to play with him on the floor - ouuuuuuch!

so how is everybody else doing?

OP posts:
jessicaandbumpsmummy · 13/07/2005 20:08

Hey girlies!

Had a scare today - again! No movements, but midwife came out and was very reassuring and heartbeat found to be approx 150bpm!

Too hot - would rather the rain susis!!!

Wont bother with ante-natal classes this time - only went to 2 of the 4 last time - nothing can prepare you in my opinion!!!

Hope you lot are all ok and having a better time of it than me!!!

nervousmum2be · 13/07/2005 21:32

poor you JBM - i have long periods when i get no movement, then just as i'm about to ring the MW, he starts kicking for England! Testing my patience to the limit - yep, typical boy He definitely takes after his daddy!

Far too hot here (south east Kent), and i woke up drenched this morning - my boobs have decided to start leaking. I assume this is normal? (i'm nearly 28 weeks) i asked 'The Oracle' aka my friend who had her first baby in May, but she didn't get it apparantly.

Take it easy, from NM2B xx

jessicaandbumpsmummy · 13/07/2005 21:33

NM2B - this is my second and my boobs have been leaking since about 12 weeks!!! DONT PANIC! Perfectly normal..... in fact i have to hand express teeny tiny amounts so they dont hurt!
