iv bought a moses basket and stand to have my lil man in by the side of my bed but dont know weather to buy cotbed for his room now or to wait till atleast 6 months when he will actually be using it ???

also dummies . . .never knew there were different tips? so whats best for a new born ?

and finally , i plan on breast feeding, im wanting to buy a breast pump to be able to express my milk when i have to for convienience, so whats best a manual or one that does it for me ???

sorry for all the questions hope everyones well

merryxmasfellowbumps · 29/01/2010 15:06

also wanted to ask is anyone else due the 5th april??

rumpleteaser · 29/01/2010 15:41

Hi ohloverguts no, not had scan yet.. hopefully Tuesday, everything's so disorganised here!
I'm thinking of buying baby's bed next week and getting a small start on the room before we go to UK. Pram and immediate neccesseties will be bought when we're there (2 weeks!)
I don't think I'll be buying a bath, gonna put baby in the sink - that is ok isn't it? I was bathed in a sink when I was a baby.

Not only is my stomach very fluffy, it also has BIG stretch marks which have been there for the past 2 months despite me covering myself in Bio Oil and Palmers Cocoa Butter every day since I knew I was pregnant!
I trimmed the fluff with scissors this morning! I don't wanna shave it, DP'd end up velcroed to my stomach stubble with his face stubble when he's shouting into my bellybutton!

Good there a few more first timers on here now too! Put's into perspective that I'm NOT the ONLY woman ever to be pregnant and not know what to expect!

Hope everyone's all good

Hi, I'm new here and I'm due on the 29 April (probably one of the last dates in this thread).

This is my first baby and I'm still trying to understand what I need, how to get ready for the birth, and... well, everything, really.

By the way, is there anyone here around London NW3? It would be nice to know other mothers in the same situation in the area.

Nice to meet you all,

Barbara

PrincessTweetz · 29/01/2010 19:34

I had a lil giggle at your post rumple!! Much needed cuz dp is in bath getting ready to go out, I don't mind at all, but have suddenly got a bit lump-in-throat tearful at thought of being on my own tonight Bathing in sink is fine..I'm sure your back will be thankful for it, esp in early weeks! ;)
Merryxmas, you'll be fine to wait til nearer the time to buy a cot/cotbed..gives you plenty of time to see if anything comes up unexpectedly in a sale somewhere too!! I used a manual breast pump with dd, as it was first time breast feeding, and I couldn't be sure that I would manage for very long, if at all, and didn't want to throw such a large amount of money down the drain if I couldn't do it. I managed fine with a manual, but this time I have invested in an electric (£40 from tesco, not sure if offer is still on tho!!), purely because breast feeding alone is really quite demanding and time consuming, so I'm hoping that the electric will be a little more efficien t for me with having a dd already..we'll see! ;) With regards to dummies, (in my opinion only!!), you'll be told if breast feeding not to introduce a dummy for first 4 weeks I think, so it doesn't affect how baby latches onto your boob. I was adamant I had to wait, but dd was quite unsettled, and started feeding for comfort, so I couldn't really put her down to settle, so we used a dummy a little before 4 weeks were up. once I knew she was feeding perfectly well, and I had a better understanding of the 'process' of breastfeeding..I found it a lil worrying as to know how much she needed to feed and if I was feeding her enough. We have just brought tommee tippee closer to nature dummies, to match the teat on the bottles we will be using when expressing, but I don't think it really matters what teat you get...your baby might have a preference if he gets used to them, but we didn't have a problem with dd Sorry if I've sent you to sleep !! I tend to get a bit carried away!! xx

Hi, can I join in (better late than never!).
I'm due in 12 weeks (23rd April) with DS2 and can't wait. Like helenwombat I am in Australia and it is hot today (33) and tomorrow (37). Thank God for air-conditioning.
Just found out that I am giving birth in the same hospital as Danii Minogue, so I will have to keep an eye out for her at my appointments.
helenwombat, we used cloth nappies (Baby Beehinds) on DS1 from when he was about 6 weeks old. Have had no complaints or issues with them. In fact will be using them when DS2 is big enough to fit into them. We dry-pailed and washed them whenever the pail was full (usually every 2 days). I take it you are in the public system, because I get a four or five night (if I have a CS) stay in hospital. Double bed, en-suite, fridge and TV...

pillia78 · 30/01/2010 06:29

Hoops I use Fairy Non-bio and Comfort Pure as both my DS's have slight eczma and if I use anything else it flares up.....
Not bothering with a moses basket either, got a bargain Mamas and Papas crib from e-bay to go in our room/ nursery and am going to put a travel cot downstairs and also use the carry cot from the pram...... The tummy tub is meant to be good for colicky babies and I have always liked the look of them but never got one.
Welcome wizbitwaffle What is your due date? must be around the same time as me as I have 12 weeks left...

I have a baby bath from DD - stooping in bath would be too tricky IMO. Too tight to buy tummy tub.

Used cloth from birth (fuzzi bunz) with fleece liners. Got funny looks, and gave baby big bum (best she gets used to that - genetic!)

12 weeks to go - too busy trying to get well (4th antibiotic) to be bothered with washing clothes yet(in fairy non-bio).

I put moses basket in cot to make transfer easier, plus never quite trusted stand.

Tried electric pump (avent) but too vicious for my nips. Manual for me (breast fed, but needed to build up stock for return to work, plus enabled a break now and then. Never affected feeding.

Dummy from day one, but encouraged her to suck thumb (can always find them, and a few germs make 'em stronger) - prefers fingers. Next one will have dummy as still a sucker at 3.5. You can take a dummy away.

Very jealous of those in Aussie.

helenwombat cool that we are due the same day shame about the coffee bit far apart arnt we lol , i may sound organised but im far from it , i may have the main things but theres always something im apparantly missing according to all my freinds who have had children.
as for the reusable nappies i agree its a good idea , enviromentaly freindly and cheaper !
plus i think of it as i wouldnt be using them all the time , i would use disposable whilst out and about and the reuseable whilst at home.

how warm will it be in australia in april??
your first aswell, exciting stuff
hope all is well

princesstweetz thanks for your advice
never thought that introducing a dummie would interfere with the breastfeeding process , but it makes sense .
hope all is wel with you

lineky · 31/01/2010 16:13

Hi all,
interesting to hear some of your nappy ideas. I am really torn - fancy going the real route but small house and don't want to be surrounded by them all the time. Also got swampped with all the different choices!! Anyone tried the Moltex nappies. That's what we're considering now as a slightly greener alternative.

nicnacinoonoo · 01/02/2010 07:52

im back online again yay!

i recycle but thats about as green as i get. i like my car and i have enough washing to do as it is without having to worry about doing nappies too, its pampers all the way for me im afraid.

i have this:
www.nuborns.co.uk/image.php?image=www.nuborns.co.uk/cdata/33436/img/33436_1809221.jpg&sCaptio n=-NaN-
as my moses basket type thing, i loved it last time just wish he could have stayed in it longer.
really good idea about putting the moses basket in the cot though.

i think with the stretch mark thing if you're going to get them then you're going to get them regardless of what you do. i got a few round my belly button last time and some small ones on my love handles and boobs. not got any so far this time but i didnt last time until right at the end, i think they coincided with when he dropped. i dont think bio oil can prevent them but i have heard that they make them look a lot better, although they become a lot less noticable with time anyway.
my mum never got any so not sure about it being in the genes. a midwife told me last time that from her experiences with people it seems more about age. the younger you are when pregnant the more likely you are to get them because your skin is younger and has not had as much chance to stretch naturally. if that makes sense.

hope everyone is well

nicnacinoonoo · 01/02/2010 07:53

oh and welcome to all the new people

Bettymum · 01/02/2010 11:19

nicnac my cousin is a midwife and says exactly the same thing about age/stretchmarks. Apparently there has been a clinical study on it somewhere too.
Had a real panic yesterday about getting ready for the baby, every weekend is so hectic and in the evenings I'm exhausted so getting nothing done. My mum came over for the day yesterday and helped entertain DD and just do all those little jobs that never seem to get done, so feeling much happier today. DH's shirts still unironed though .
I tried reuseables with DD and found that she just soaked through them and I was changing entire outfits at every nappy change, not just nappies, so I got fed up withi doing that every hour and switched to Naturebaby nappies which don't have nasty chemicals in. However I have to admit that I've just switched again to buying in bulk from Costco as they're half the price. I hate the amount of rubbish that nappies produce but I also hated the amount of washing that the reusables produced. Having said that, I might try again this time after three months and see if that works...

Neeko · 01/02/2010 11:44

Hi all. Hope you're all feeling well today.

I used disposable nappies with DD and will do so again. I thought about reusable but know I'd end up sticking them in the tumble drier so that would defeat the purpose.
I do try to recycle as much as I can and tended to walk everywhere when DD was small instead of taking car... Motherhood's one big guilt trip as it is without worrying about nappies too.

Neeko · 01/02/2010 11:45

P.S. I also have had very little in the way of stretch marks - must be my old skin too

stinkypinky · 01/02/2010 12:19

As old as the hills, and only a few tiny stretchmarks. My mum was 19 when she had bro, and her tum is still quite shocking. Too tight to buy bio oil or anything else like that.

I used washables until 1 yr old (new childminder would not use them) My daughter peed for England, so had to use extra padding and change frequently, but her bot was so cute, and never any trouble with rashes. No need to use cream either.

Am a poorley puppy soon - having to tackle chest infection with heavy duty meds, and side effects are hideous - stomach cramps, vomiting, diarrhoea... but chest improving. Really hurts when baby kicks, but baby is very active, so glad about that.

Welcome newbies.. I am due 23rd too.

Bettymum · 01/02/2010 12:23

poor you stinky hope your meds work and you get better soon.

thedollshouse · 01/02/2010 12:26

I think you could be onto something regarding age and stretchmarks. The most shocking stretchmarks I have seen have been on very young mums who are otherwise very slim and fit.

One advantage of being an older mum I suppose!

stinkypinky · 01/02/2010 13:31

Thank you Bettymum

eugie · 02/02/2010 13:57

Hi all,

I'm new here and DD is due on April 6th. Have had a great pregnancy so far with virtually no problems... Baby seems to be in transverse lie which worries me a bit....
Regarding stretchmarks, do they usually appear b4 or after giving birth? Have not seen any so far and have been using oil, so hopefully it worked!
Is there anyone here from London West Kensington area?

rumpleteaser · 02/02/2010 19:15

Well I went for my last scan here in Bulgaria before going to UK for rest of pregnancy.
The doc gives me a different idea of dates every time I go.. this time when he measured the baby's head on scan he said 32 wks. By my calculations I'm 29wks. He then went on to say my due date was 24th April, my calculations are 18th. Either I'm gonna have a really long pregnancy or this baby has a big head?!
I took my wee along in a jar as well (giving a sample in the ancient hospital is very traumatic) but my wee wasn't tested because the wee testing woman (my doctors wife) has broken her arm.
I had to go round the supermarket after with a jar of wee in my bag. It did look nice, clean wee.
Roll on the UK. Maybe someone there can tell me when this baby will come out!
Oh - and still none the wiser on baby's sex, but its head is down - that's good right?

Hope everyone else is ok!
keep ing!
