sleepless wow anenglish tour of the hospital, i'd love one too! Starting to worry that i'm not going to understand anyone. Normally i'm totally fluent plus no accent so everyone thinks i'm french but when im tired and in pain (ie in the middle of labour i totally lose my grip and convert back to english ( well except for the accent so people just assume i'm french but v. dim!)

Plus it's starting to dawn on me that unless baby arrives in the next 2 days (and during school hours) i'm going to be by myself. Is anyone else planning to be alone or went through it previously?? Would just like someone to say i'll be fine!

Laugs · 21/10/2009 17:20

southernbelle aw she sounds cute. Maybe you can put your name down on a waiting list with a local toy shop for when they get it in? (I haven't got a clue how these things work)

koumak was it you who was asking a while ago if we can work beyond our EDD? Did you ever find out?

I am full of a cold and feeling rubbish today. I feel a bit bad because DD had it yesterday and I probably wasn't sympathetic enough. It is her third in 3 weeks, bless her. DH (ever the optimist) said, "hooray DD, that's one less cold you have to catch", but I'm just getting sick of all the sleepless nights, worry etc.

Is there anything we can do for colds in pregnancy? We can't take vit c tablets can we?

raggie · 21/10/2009 18:06

Thanks for all the advice re reusable nappies. Have copied and pasted all the relevant sections into an email which have sent to DH and I will look through properly once my mat leave starts. 2 days to go!

Sorry to hear about bad news erika and about your awful infection mumsie Poor things

Whoever was saying they read Harry Potter books during last pregnancy - that's what I used to get through my morning sickness for the first few months! Needed something to get caught up in and easy to take my mind off nausea and stop spinning. I have now just finished re-reading the His Dark Materials trilogy (in honour of moving to Oxford!) and I have been reading grown ups books too! Recently read An Equal Music by Vikram Seth, all about a man who plays violin in a string quartet. When I went to SEE a string quartet just after, it made it all the more interesting, thinking about the relationships between the players, how they chose their set, what might be going on backstage etc... I managed to plough though the very different A Suitable Boy a few years ago and loved that too, so he gets top marks from me!

Ooh, after that book review-fest, I'll stop there I think!

You know who's not been around for a while? katster Hope she's all right...maybe she's in labour! Or too busy at school more like. Katster, if you're lurking, let us know you're ok!

wook · 21/10/2009 18:18

Hmm, feeling a bit concerned now- waters haven't broken- phew!- and the infection isn't a urine infection -so that's good- but bloods still showing signs that body is fighting an infection So had swabs taken and more bloods then was allowed home after afternoon strapped to monitor- but baby's heartrate is high too, so they have put 'suspicious' for that on notes, rather than 'normal' though thank heavens not 'pathological'. Midwife was really reassuring but I am now wondering what on earth this 'infection' is- sure it's nothing but all this faffing and worry is just making me more gloomy and longing for the end of the pg.

Just made it to parent teacher interview and ds is very shy and quiet at school apparently, which is at odds with how bouncy he is at home and nursery, so hopefully he will get more confident as time goes by and he settles in

Gloom!!!!

Sorry me me me. Think it's the weather too- definitely an evening for apple crumble and custard!

Koumak · 21/10/2009 18:32

laugs yep it was me and apparently it is possible. Companies don?t like it though as they prefer to know exact date. But apparently the "law" says that maternity leave can start the date after the baby is born not it has to start on or after EDD. Little bit of a loop hole I think to be honest. So I am planning to work till the 30th which is next Friday even though due on Wednesday and have leaving lunch scheduled for Thursday! I then intend to take a week of paid holiday if I go overdue and start maternity leave after that. I figured that if the baby hasn?t arrived by then might as well enjoy being paid as this way it should take me till Christmas on almost normal pay as it is the basic ordinary maternity after that. But praying that this baby will have some sense and arrive early or at least on time!

And I have been drinking one of those disolv. vitamin c tablets every morning. Didn?t realise we were not supposed to? But I prefer this then catching the swine or any flu now!

Ds is entertaining himself drawing robots. It?s all he seems to be doing last few days. I wonder what that is all about.

Must go and let the gerbils out for a run in their exercise ball. What fun.

Koumak · 21/10/2009 18:36

Sorry xposted wook
I wonder what the infection can be. But at least they were not too alarmed with the heart rate.

We have parents evening tomorrow night! First reception one too.

Trikken · 21/10/2009 18:41

i thought vit c was a good thing too. have loads of vit c as drink loads of juice anyway and the juice i have with my spatone.

Laugs · 21/10/2009 19:00

Sorry, I meant I am already taking a multi-vitamin which has vitamin c in it, but normally, if I weren't pregnant, I'd be supplementing with high strength vitamin c tablets, echincaea and zinc when I have a cold. I think I read somewhere that you shouldn't exceed the RDA in pregnancy.
Have been eating loads of fruit and drinking lots of juice, so that is extra vitamin c anyway. But I want a magic cure!

wook What a stressful day. You definitely deserve cake. Is it just that the white blood cells are raised? I had this once in my blood test, but didn't feel unwell and never found out what it was. Are they going to do any more tests? I am sure if they had real reason for concern you wouldn't be at home now.

koumak thanks for the info. You must be exhausted getting up at 6.30am for an hour's commute! I am hoping not to work until due date, but knowing me, I won't want to turn down work if it is offered.

I have also been wondering about the people who aren't around. I think there are a few of them... tamlin and wizzywoo particularly come to mind as they'd both had false alarms last week.

Koumak · 21/10/2009 19:26

laugs are you employed or freelance? i think if you are freelance than it doesnt matter at all when you finish working?

weston · 21/10/2009 19:53

had 36 week growth scan today and all is well, baby only 6 14, thought it was 6 at 32 week and was expecting a thumper but hopefully will be similar to first and more in in the 8-9 field!

witch skeleton nurse gave out to me for putting on 13kilos - in my mind 2 stone is pretty good for a pregnancy!! i am surprised its not more as have been eating enough for a small nation, but she told me i had to be really careful now as anything >15 kilo is unacceptable! what is she going to do! went to mcdonalds for tea...

Comma2 · 21/10/2009 19:55

poor wook that's no good.
I was in the hospital a bit back and had all the signs of pneumonia like fluid in lungs, pain etc, but no sign of infection in blood, so they let me go too. Strange blood works.

It'll all be over soon.

weston · 21/10/2009 19:56

sorry if covered earlier but are people going to get the swine flu jab or not? i can't decide, am thinking prob will as cant imagine having to deal with new born and flu etc, asked doctor today who gave me the standard line that they recommend it for all pregnant women, also as our babies are now pretty much fully developed can't have much impact on them?

lucieerin · 21/10/2009 20:19

weston, personally I wouldn't touch it with a ten foot barge pole. it hasn't been tested on babies or pregnant women and nowhere near enough about it is known. I'm not risking another thalydamide incident personally. xx

Fruitpastels · 21/10/2009 20:21

Weston I haven't been weighed during this pregnancy or the last, apart from booking-in at 10 weeks. I don't think 13 kilos is a concern at all, unless a women started off with a very high BMI. I had a scan at 36 weeks and baby was weighing 6.3 and slightly above average on measurements, midwife was happy with that weight.

I will be having the swine flu jab if its offered in time, I'm guessing it may not be!

Wook what a day you have had. I'm sure if they were concerned they would have kept you in hospital. I'm sure everything is fine.

I will be a very unhappy lady if the baby goes overdue. I feel like it's ready to fall out now!! I'm having lots of pain with walking due to the huge pressure building up down there, it blimmin hurts. I'm still getting painful BH's so this baby better get a move on! I'm sure we all feel like this as we're nearing our EDD.

claired21 · 21/10/2009 20:27

I'm still undecided about the vaccine. I've decided to wait and see when I am offered it as I stop work 2wks on fri at 37wks so would imagine thereafter that I would be in fewer public places and so at a lower risk of catching it. Vaccine might not be available to me before then.

Biggest concern for me is that other half is a teacher but he has an excellent immune system & is rarely ill so hoping he can avoid it.

Had a mild panic after that 17yr old pregnant woman with no underlying health issues died however mw pointed out plenty of pregnant women have had it in mild forms.

Difficult decision to make.

Fruitpastels · 21/10/2009 20:34

I agree Claire21 it is a personal decision. Each pregnant women should do what they feel is best for them and their baby.

Stormfly · 21/10/2009 20:48

raggie have now noted down Equal Music too! I read the Inkheart trilogy this time round during the worst "morning" sickness month. It does take your mind off it a bit.

wook I expect all is perfectly fine but I guess they may as well check you out and keep an eye on things.

weston I haven't been weighed this pg or last either. Two stone sounds fine to me. I put on one and a half on the first pg, two and a half on the second. So far, one and a half this time. As for the swine flu jab, I have been following the excellent thread still on discussions of the day, learnt a lot and have gone from not liking the idea to thinking I probably will. Lots of informative posts on there. Will make a final decision when it is offered.

turtle23 · 21/10/2009 20:48

Do me a favour ladies? As you're all in pretty much the same stage as me...give me your opinion here so I can use it to my advantage tomorrow when I force DH to take the rest of his stuff and go?

EasyEggs · 21/10/2009 20:56

Oh Turtle

I'm so sorry. I was just reading that thread and suddenly realised it was you. Stupid thing to say but I hope you are ok. You sound like you're being remarkably strong about all this.

Fruitpastels · 21/10/2009 21:06

Turtle so sorry you are having to go through all this whilst being heavily pregnant. I'm sure the choice you have made is for the very best. Without knowing you in person and all the background, it's very hard to give an opinion, but your DH (not sure you would want to call him Darling..) sounds like a bad egg. I hope you have some family/friends around for support. I admire your courage

turtle23 · 21/10/2009 21:12

I actually just meant add your opinion on thread as to whether you believe him...

lucieerin · 21/10/2009 21:13

turtle Awww hon...I know it's hard but you're doing the right thing severing him from you now, as scary a time as it is. I've got a friend going through something similar and once she'd accepted it and started to sort her life out and move forward she found strength she never though she had and is doing amazingly. If you leave it until later you're also more likely to just leave it altogether and he will keep on getting away with it and you'll end up stuck. It's more relevant now at the stage you're at as if he's still there when the baby's born it will be understandably very tempting to let him stay because of how hard things are with a newborn xx

lucieerin · 21/10/2009 21:15

and no, i don't believe him.

scarlotti · 21/10/2009 21:25

turtle sorry to hear you're going through this, will hop over and read through your other thread.

Weight wise - I've put on 2st 10lbs this time and my mw isn't concerned. Put on 2.5 st last time and that was fine too. Tell the witch nurse where to stick her comments!!

Not sure about the jab here - part of me thinks that I owe the baby 6 months of protection which it would get if I have it before it's born. If he catches it as a newborn he'll hardly stand a chance surely?

Fruitpastels · 21/10/2009 21:29

I'll hop over there as well
