longwayaway · 21/10/2009 11:57

Chocolate, of course! Why didn't I think of that

Thanks for the reassurance re: using disposable wipes... also, had never heard this tidbit about meconium being impossibly sticky - good to know!

Laugs · 21/10/2009 12:00

longwayaway at least you can show DH your skinned knees this evening. It always makes me feel better when I have something to show for it.

wipes - we used cotton wool and plain water for the first few months. Then (possibly out of laziness, I can't really remember) moved on to unscented sensitive wipes. Never really had a problem with nappy rash, but still use these now when we need anything (she's almost 3). I might feel differently for a boy, but I know for myself I would only use unscented products 'down there' so it would seem silly to be any different for DD.

hobnob57 · 21/10/2009 12:05

Sorry to hear about your slip long. Enjoy the choc!

What's everyone having for tea? I need some inspiration on this windy and rainy day. Urgh. DH has a parcel that need posted but I haven't even managed to get out of my PJs yet and it's lunchtime! My excuse? Reading up about waterbirths, just like the MW told me to (but just remembered she told me about perineal massage too and I haven't got around to that either ).

Sorry for not remembering everything, am having PC problems!!

Longway sorry to hear about your fall, hope you feel better now.

Hobnob thank you for the tip about Alley, but am too young to sign up Year of birth has to be 1990 and I'm '91!!

Scarlotti thanks for your help earlier, damn PC!!

Had some bad news last night about some friends. DP very shaken up, took the morning off work He's getting ready to go in now, much to my objections.

Trikken · 21/10/2009 12:24

is the meconium poo the first poo? the one me and dh thought was rather marmite like in colour and stickiness. it was hard to remove from the skin.

Erika hope your dp is ok.

Stormfly · 21/10/2009 12:38

hobnob - sausage and mash, not very inspiring, sorry, but good comfort food for this time of year. Don't mention perineal massage - I have bought some cream from Mothercare but not quite gotten round to it yet either - doesn't exactly appeal, does it?

erika - sorry you have had bad news about friends...

lucieerin · 21/10/2009 12:39

Eeee how am I supposed to keep up with all of this hehe!! xx

claired21 · 21/10/2009 13:07

longwayaway - hope you're feeling better after your fall.

Re the washable wipes - the 'wash solutions' can be made up in a glass jar and will last for 2/3 days so I don't think there's too much work involved in that side of it. The wipes don't need to be dried after they've been through the washing machine either, just put into the tupperware tubs in the solution or keep the solution in a spray bottle for wetting the wipes before use.

This is my first baby as well and the question I have for others is ... would you be happy using washable wipes given that these will be used to clean up pooey bums?? Will all of the poo come out in the wash? And thanks for the tip re vaseline on the bum, I'll try to remember!!

helips · 21/10/2009 13:38

Hi all,

Erika hope your dp is ok...

longwayaway hope you are feeling better now after your fall. Show your dh your battle wounds when he gets it and milk it for all its worth

mumsie youch, your rash sounds painful, hope you are feeling better now, not what you need in such a delicate area in this stage of pregnancy!

We are having Chilli tonight, nice and warming on a cold wet day and loads left over for the freezer! In fact, it is bubbling away on the stove as I type!

My back is still giving me jip, although a fraction better after yesterdays acupuncture so am hoping that another session will sort it out. Saw midwife this morning and all is good. Nothing else to report, hope everyone else is having a fun day!

wook · 21/10/2009 13:39

Laugs woo- erotic fiction for free under respectable conditions!

claired21 I think you just have to wash things at a reasonably high temperature if they are very pooey. When I think of all the poss, sick and wee that has been through our washing machine with ds in the past 4 yrs I am horrified! But then is washinga t a high temp any good for the environment either? It's all a conundrum!

Erika sorry to hear of bad news

BBL great news for your ds- we have parents' evening at 5.30, I am v v nervous!

Got to go to pregnancy and wellbeing suite at 2.30 as the midwife rang this am to say that one of the blood tests I had at A and E on Fri for the electric shock had flagged up that I am carrying some kind of infection and was I feeling OK and did I think my waters may have broken? Scary! I am sure I will be reassured anyway. I don't think my waters have broken but then again they are maybe trickling but since I went up to hosp with ds thinking waters had been broken to discover I was essentially just a bit incontinent, I thought I would probably just ignore it this time. ooer. Just hope all is going to be fine and I can make it to parents eve.

My book club book for next month is the new Audret Niffeneger- has anyone read it?

wook · 21/10/2009 13:41

Longwayaway hope you are Ok after fall

LissyGlitter · 21/10/2009 13:58

laugs What exactly IS your job? I know you are a journalist, but who/what do you write for? Sorry, just being nosy :D I did entertain thoughts myself of being a journalist for a while, but a bit of time running a local music fanzine quickly made me realise I was complete rubbish! DP was heavily involved with the uni paper as a student, and they won some award from the guardian and everything, and as a teenager he wrote for the local paper for a bit, but he never really broke into the industry properly, so I am in awe of somebody who actually manages it!

beepbeep · 21/10/2009 14:26

Come home from work as feeing really achey and off colour, but unfortunately not enough time for a sleep before picking up DD from pre school.

I tried using reusable nappies with DD but found the ones I was using didn't suit her then i just got lazy and went with disposables, love the idea of using them, but I know the reality is we won't.

Re wipes - both DD & DS had quite sensitive skin, DD in particular so used cotton wool & water for her (also didn't bathe her for about 10 days), then went onto senstive wipes (usually sainsbury or tesco 0 other expensive and really don't like huggies - far too thick and wet). for DS we used sensitive wipes from the start and no reations.

Bepanthan (sp?) is also a good cream for nappy rash - neither of our ever had it badly and it seemed to clear up what they did have in no time at all.

Erika - hope all's ok & take care

Claired -hope your ok after your trip

Laugs · 21/10/2009 14:30

Umm lissy don't be in awe of me, because I manage it very badly, get paid an absolute pittance (honestly) and am very much out of any kind of loop... if I were doing it full time, rather than in little snatches while DD is at nursery/ in bed, I would probably have had to give up and get a proper job by now.

Still, erotic fiction. It'll help pass a grey day. Wook shall I send it on?
How strange about your test results. I wonder what kind of result shows you might have broken your waters. Hope everything's ok.

Erika sorry to hear about your bad news and I hope DP is alright.

hobnob We are having spag bol. But if I'd known it was going to be such a dreary day, I'd have preferred something like a big bowl of soup with crusty bread and cheese. Followed by apple crumble and custard

longwayaway · 21/10/2009 14:42

Erika, sorry to hear about the bad news

Laugs I was also curious to know what you do!

Trikken giggling at meconium-Marmite comparison- DH loves Marmite, which I make fun of him for, because we don't really "do" Marmite in the states. I will now be looking for the first opportunity to point out the similarity... guess I am just evil like that

helips sorry to hear about the continuing back problems - hope another round of acupuncture helps!

wook hope the appointment this afternoon is reassuring and they are just being overly cautious.

Read in the news that they are starting swine flu jabs on Monday, and that we are supposed to get letters from our GPs inviting us to come in - but with the postal strike on we may or may not get the letters. So what is stopping me from calling my surgery and simply asking for it? Would that be poor form? Rapid descent into chaos?

Thanks again for all the sympathy on my fall - just realized that tonight is my last pregnancy yoga class and the skinned knees will interfere with some of the poses. Boo. On the bright side one of my best friends from back home arrives tomorrow for a week visit! Sooo looking forward to having her around. And um, should really get some work done now

Comma2 · 21/10/2009 14:54

beepbeep off colour? Careful! a girl in the gyn's waiting rom yesterday told me she went in because she felt a bit off, he checked her and she was 4 cm dialated. Then she walked 5 min over to hospital, and they just had time to get her into a room before baby popped out. Yes. I was a bit shocked, but not nearly as much as she.

Laugs Nice job! Nothing like freelancing...I had a job as a translator and loved it, but then got swept up in job that actually paid the rent and editor changed and that was that. Too bad too, was fun.

hobnob chili con carne is good (and easy)..
wook good luck with erverything! Bit nervewracking with the infection, can't you go and have them check if you're leaking? I have a bunch of ph strips next to the loo, so can test antime for ph. Can you buy them somewhere (I stole mine from my lab)? Is good for nerves to test.

I feel strange. Had BH a lot last night, I think, but was mixed up with strange dreams about hanging on cliffs and finding pirates etc. Lower abdomen feels all heavy today, contantly think I have a BH but then belly isn't hard. Also keep losing plug in small, manageble pieces.

Was watching Extras last night...v funny...

Laugs · 21/10/2009 15:11

Wow Comma, I hope I feel a bit off colour when I am 4cm dilated

Longwayaway I had a MW appt yesterday and asked at reception while I was there about the jab. She said they didn't have it in yet and weren't exactly sure when it would arrive, but that I'd either get a letter or phone call to be offered it. Quite vague then! But she didn't seem to mind that I'd asked. Is the Royal Mail still hiring in a load of temps so that post gets out, or did they decide that was illegal?

Southernbelle did you find the Pets Funhouse anywhere? How old is your DD if you don't mind me asking? Trying to calculate how many years I have before DD starts desperately wanting specific presents.

lemontop · 21/10/2009 15:13

hello just popping my head in again. Isaac's 3 weeks old today! i'm home alone now DH went back to work on Monday but it's going ok. We've got visitors booked in every day this week and the phone doesn't stop ringing with grandparents giving 'advice'. I'm still trying to work out how the get baby to not sleep all day and wake all night if anyone has any suggestions! it's going really well though. Wishing you all safe and speedy popping (soon I hope! it's boring being on my own!)

Laugs · 21/10/2009 15:15

Meant to say - Comma - maybe the sweep has done the trick? I'm sure my first labour started with heaviness/ dull ache in lower abdomen and back.

hobnob57 · 21/10/2009 15:19

oooh exciting about your plug comma. I'll add to that story one I heard from one of the ladies at yoga last week. She has a colleague who had suffered from IBS and was on medication for a while because of it. She then went to her GP with classic symptoms of appendicitis, so they whisked her into hospital, examined her and prepped her for surgery. She had been in the place for 4 hours before someone realised she was actually pregnant and in labour! She was quite large (size 18) and thought she had been putting on weight (or 'solidifying', as she put it). What a shock! She had been having her periods the whole way through so it never in a million years crossed her mins she might be pregnant. My mind boggles at that.

I've just logged on to share that I tried my first perineal massage and it wasn't pleasant. Sorry if TMI but I feel like I've just pulled out a dry tampon . 10 mins a day they say. Righto. A bit of an unnecessary foretaste of things to come I think! While I was there I had a rummage to see what else was going on in there and couldn't even find my cervix so I think a big fat Not A Lot is the answer to that.

Chili sounds tempting. Must go and defrost some mince... It was going to be fajitas but they just don't go with this weather!

Laugs · 21/10/2009 15:39

Hi Lemontop sorry I crossed posts with you. Glad it's all going so well. No advice on the waking at night, sleeping through day thing I'm afraid. DD did this too, but just grew out of it on her own within the 6 weeks. I think they say it's because the baby in the womb is awake when you are still ie at night, so he's just got into that pattern. Hope you're managing to get some sleep during the day (it's ok to turn down visitors if you can't face it!).

hobnob perineal massage does sound like a form of torture. I don't think I can bring myself to do it.

Comma2 · 21/10/2009 15:56

Laugs, I keep thinking for weeks now that when it actually happens, I won't get to the hopsital in time. I was induced last time and they had to crank the pitocin drip all the way up before I noticed anything really, and then they were trying to figure out whether they should go over what the drip could do to speed things up. So maybe if I have normal contractions, I don't really feel them? Yes. Very exciting thought.

hobnob massage is nasty, but tear or epi even more...
My GP told me he had a patient who thought she was infertile after years of ttc and doctors assuring her she could never have kids, and who came in with stomach complaints. He checked her and she was in labour. Had her baby before the husband could get to the hospital. He was cracking up while he told it, I think the look on the husband's face (let alone hers) must have been somehting to remember.

Koumak · 21/10/2009 16:24

Whoever was saying that they are surprised that I am still working. So you know I am no superhuman. I might have a full time job but it is admin job so really am sat at my desk all day! Also, for the last two weeks I have been delegating more work then actually working so could mnt instead!
And I pay someone to do the housework, well most of it anyway!
Only have one dc who is 4.5 so quite independent!
Also I have stopped going swimming now, as the early starts (I used to go before I went into the office) made me r. tired. So now I can sleep till 6.30am and I can actually last till 10pm (well again most evenings).
The most difficult part of my day is the hourly London public transport commute each way.
Also still have most of the baby stuff from ds and clothes from him and my niece and nephew so didn?t really need anything this time round. Still doesn?t stop me from shopping for cute stuff!
Whoever said that it?s going to be strange if the baby is not going to be the right sex they are expecting? Well if this baby is a boy he will have to wear pink well!

My days are really boring. Get home from work in the evening and eat (obviously) and then put a wash load on and spent time with ds, play, bath, DVD or book and then I do bits and bobs around the house and sleeeeeeeeeep!

I wish I was nesting but actually still enjoy leaving the house every morning. I feel like I seem to do much more from the office from what I could if I was at home if it makes sense. I seriously need to sort out our home office but have been postponing it. I know I have to do it its just piles and piles of papers everywhere. And I need to go through all of those to get together all the paperwork I need for the court claim against our previous landlord as he owes us deposit and have no other option but to sue now.
Pavlov any suggestions for this you court wiz?

Welcome lucieerin

Ninja 7 and half lb is not 11 lbs?yet. You never know he might stop slow down growing? Possible he just went through a massive growth spur, at least that is what I am telling myself. Please tell me girls are usually smaller right?

Forgot to say that dh?s sister had a baby on 10th. She was due some time in Oct. Can you tell we don?t talk much? I think that this baby is likely to be born on 10th Nov just to keep the comparing simple for my inlaws!

Also the best thing for nappy rash is Bepanthen cream used daily to avoid it and Metanium used when you get it. Or swap reguratly in between. They are magic. Bit like Lansinoh for boobs! I think somebody already mentioned that though!

No signs of labour yet. Some random BHs which is more than I ever had with ds!

Sorry that was long! Now I am going to read up on what you have been up to.

southernbelle77 · 21/10/2009 16:26

Gosh all these stories of people not knowing they are pregnant! I suppose they didn't have the worry of mc etc and the long wait we all go through, especially towards the end, but that must be one hell of a shock to suddenly have a baby when you did't know it was coming!

The thought of massage really isn't a pleasent one, and hearing hobnob's story has made me even less inclined! I bought a set from Mothercare the other day (after my funny turn in there I thought I'd best buy something!) and it has massage stuff in, but well, no, just can't do it!!

Laugs - dd is 5 and a half and knows specifically what she wants!! She was even telling nanny today about the bloody hamster! I really am going to have to find it! Especially as her best friends mum told me she has got one (from ebay from the States and paid way over the odds without realising at the time!) so she will be so upset if she doesn't have it too!! Bless her, lol!

I just went round to mil's for lunch. She has dd this morning and asked if I'd like to go for lunch which was nice. Stayed for 2 hours chatting before bringing dd home at 3pm (so just like her being at school today really, lol).
