Here we go -

Hpoefully in this one we'll all get to feel those kicks and turns if we haven't already, some of us will go for our 20 week scans, and we might get to look preg instead of looking like we've eaten too many cream cakes!

No more scares in this one though please!

Chacha, they say bedtime is the best time to feel baby move. Apparently when we're busy in the day it's like rocking to them and they usually sleep a lot but once we lie down it's their time to boogie! Glad you're feeling better.

BEKs, we're looking for a Sept start but they seem to do things a bit early in Blackheath and our difficulty is that everyone seems to have just finished booking for Sept. Fingers crossed this Montessori works out. I love DS to death but I need a few mornings a week to myself! He was running around at 8.30 this morning wanting me to make a crocodile out of an empty egg carton.

Bains, very impressed that you've started yoga. I've got my booking form and just need to fill it out and post it. I've heard nothing but good things about antenatal yoga. The thing that really appeals to me is a quicker recovery after the birth. One friend did yoga with both babies and had them without any pain relief, just squatted down into one of her yoga positions and gave birth. With her second baby she was home cooking dinner eight hours after the birth! Another friend who did yoga came to DS's birthday party with her new baby less than 24 hours after the birth! I do not plan to cook dinner or attend parties so soon but they both credited the yoga with their fast recoveries. I'll probably have an elective C-section but I've heard that it's still very good for relieving pregnancy stress and for recovery so I'm definitely going to try it. Good luck with it!

Speaking of which, BEKs I'm going to do the antenatal yoga in Bromley. It's the one that's been recommended to me. Do you fancy it?

Busyalexsmummy · 23/06/2005 13:44

hope everyones well x liz 18+5

ChaCha · 23/06/2005 16:36

Hope your feeling okay Busy - had a tooth extracted a while back but didn't feel a thing thankfully as i would have passed out there and then on the chair.

It is very hot!!!!!

BEKsmum · 23/06/2005 17:08

Afternoon girls, have spent the afternoon in the garden with a couple of friends and there kids, we made the slide wet and let the kids go down it and they were hilarious.

Tex thanks for the offer honey, but I have the co-ordination of a dead donkey and would have no chance with yoga, I don't even no my left from my right most days without looking for my wedding ring but let me know how you get on won't you.

The pre-school situation sounds a nightmare, have you put ds on any of the other waiting lists, so that you could possibly move him at Christmas? The other thing to do is to let him start at Montessorri and then approach one of the nurseries and say he hasn't settled and that you're desperate, they may be able to help you a few weeks into the term - it's what a friend of mine did and it worked a treat!

Busy sounds painful mate, hope you're feeling better soon. Have a great weekend away

Sharon try not to wory too much I'm sure everything is going to be fine, if you're really worried phone your mw and ask if you can come in to check for a heartbeat which would reassure you.

Right off to do a Gruffalo puzzle with a whinging 3 year old, will speak to you all tomorrow, take care for now. Beks 19+4

tessasmum · 23/06/2005 17:15

Don't feel as though I have much energy today - DD at a friend's for the afternoon and I'm supposed to be writing wedding thank you cards. Got about 6 done then collapsed on the sofa and dozed off whilst Henman got thrashed. Just sent DH to pick her up!

Bains - I started the pregnancy yoga classes about 5 weeks ago. Wasn't sure either and after 10 minutes of sitting upright (rather than slouched as usual!) my back was complaining bitterly. However it got better after that and I have really enjoyed them. Its nice to be doing some decent stretching and I always feel good afterwards. Main reason I started was that with a toddler around I knew that I wasn't going to get much to put my feet up and relax this time round and the yoga guarantees me 1 1/2 hours a week that is just for me.

Various other questions:
What am I eating? - everything and then some and have been since the little blue line appeared! Luckily at the moment its mainly fruit that I seem to want. That and chocolate obviously!

What am I wearing? - a mixture of usual stuff with tie or elasticated waists and a bit of smaller maternity stuff. Got a few really good bargains on ebay a while back and am hoping they will last me through the summer and then have last times winter wear for later. Also went into Matalan last week for a few stretchy things. Cheap and cheerful me, can't remember who it was who spent 200 on a pair of jeans a while ago but I didn't even spend that on my wedding dress and it was silk!!

rodeo1 · 23/06/2005 21:39

Hi everyone, just a quick check on you all!

It's been busy on here today, although I love it when there's loads to catch up on! Much more interesting!

Just been looking at pushchair's on the web. Dp has fallen in love with the quinny zapp after a trip round mothercare today! It's suitable from 6mths but the maxi-cosi cabrio car seat fits on it to make it into a travel system. But don't worry busy, I know you don't like the thought of newborns in carseats for long periods (I'm with you on that one too!) but the car seat is really flat! They come pretty cheap on ebay too!

Chacha, what's been eating at the witch on the pg thread??? I'm sorry but she must come across that kind of thing all the time! She can't compare it to racism at all. I was going to tell her to lighten up but was scared she might put a spell on me! I hope she doesn't drop by this thread (gulp)!

Right going to watch Desparate Midwives later, there's a Mumsnetter on tonight called Michelle, so watch it if you can!

Catch up with you all tomorrow

21+1 x x x

tessasmum · 24/06/2005 09:02

Busy - Hope the teeth are feeling better, have a good trip, hope you don't find too many mud-encusted hippies in your garden when you get back!!

BEKsmum · 24/06/2005 10:14

Morning girls,

Had a nice night out with the girls last night although to be honest it was a bit hot for curry!

Chacha, how funny was your post on pregnancy, what did you start there? Blimey talk about touchy, like you would have known there was full blown witch on the server, she needs to make a potion to chill out or otherwise try Rescue Rememdy! Just wanted to check she hadn't turned you into a frog overnight .

Not looking forward to the weekend as dh is away with the lads leaving me and ds to it. Not sure how to amuse him as it's normally dh's job at the weekend! Think I'll take him on an open top bus round London on Sunday if the weather holds, if not god knows what we'll do!

Speak to youall later Beks 19+5

ChaCha · 24/06/2005 11:20

Beks - bus idea sounds nice, will probably keep your DS happily amused for a while. Have you tried Regents Park Zoo? I always loved it there when i was younger, but times may have changed!
I did think it was a bit hot for a curry when i read your post but thought who would turn that down just for the weather - we had yet another BBQ but i'm not complaining, DH does it all - i might help and cut up a few tomatoes

Thunder and lightning - lovely!! What a pleasant change eh?

bebejam · 24/06/2005 13:06

Hi everyone,

Thought I would just say hello. I am due in November with first baby!!!!!

I'm 32, live in London (but originally from across the pond- the wild western part)
DH is from N.Ireland. (Yes, our baby will be confused by the plethura of accents around)

I have my 20 week scan coming up next week and I was wondering if you guys could give me an idea of what happens during that appointment. i.e. is it just a quick check or do they spend a lot of time looking at anatomy ect. Are there any questions I should ask, or is it all pretty straightforward?

Looking forward to getting to know you guys

firstbabyandnervous · 24/06/2005 13:50

Welcome bebejam! Everyone here is great to talk to. Unfortunately I cant tell you anything about 20 week scan as I only had one at 12 weeks and wont be having another.Im sure someone will be on soon to help you out.

tex111 · 24/06/2005 14:13

Hi Bebejam, what part of the wild west do you come from? I'm from Dallas. DH is English and we've been in England for about 12 years. We're in SE London near Bromley but are in the process of moving to Blackheath. Welcome to the group!

The 20 week scan is a detailed look at the baby so it's quite in depth. They usually check fingers & toes, major organs, etc and look for signs of any congenital problems like Downs, spina bifida, cleft palate, etc. The great thing is that you get a really good look at the baby. We were lucky enough to see DS's face quite clearly at his 20 week which was amazing. Which hospital are you with?

tessasmum · 24/06/2005 14:17

Hello Bebejam and welcome. I've been over here for nearly 20 years now (can't believe its that long!) but grew up in N.Ireland. We are now scattered across the UK and Ireland and each of the 4 of us has a different accent, its my poor mum who struggles!

I had my 20 week scan on Weds and although it was at a different hospital to the one I had 2 1/2 years ago it was about the same. Its much longer than the 12 week one, about 20 minutes or so, and they measure all sorts of things - head circumference, tummy circumference, thigh length to check that everything is growing in proportion. They also check heart, kidneys, bowel, etc to see that they are working. If they can they also try and check for a cleft lip. At some hospitals they will try and determine the sex but we didn't want to know last time and in this hospital they won't tell you anyway. The lady doing mine explained what she was going to do and said she would talk us through it once she had done her measurements. She also took a great picture for us as I had said that we had a 2 year old at home who had been promised to picture of the baby in Mummy's tummy.

I'm sure I may have missed a few bits but someone else will add them in. Enjoy it as its quite amazing to see a wriggly little person inside you, both DH and I were near to tears and this is our second time around!

20 weeks and a bit!

LilJ · 24/06/2005 16:03

I'm a Brit, but spent 17 years of my life (out of 36) in US (NE mostly) and 7 in other countries. My DH is a born and raised New Yorker. We moved to London just under 8 years ago. I don't think he's quite cottoned on to the fact that the sprog will have a English accent!

Glad I'm having kid here rather than US - no worries about medical insurance and v. limited maternity leave (6 weeks - how do they do it?)

May I drop in to say a quick hello to Tex111? (Guess it's too late to ask really...) I am so happy that you are getting nearer and neared to holding that baby!

tex111 · 24/06/2005 18:57

Hi Cadmum! I was very relieved to cross the halfway mark this week, let me tell you. How are you doing?

For all you expats, and anyone else who's interested for that matter, I'm organising a Moms and Moms-to-be get together at the Starbucks in Jubilee Place, Canary Wharf next Thursday the 30th at 2.00. It started as part of my University of Texas alumni assoc in the UK and has expanded to include all US universities but it's a very small group (about 4 of us so far) and this is the first time we're meeting. Everyone is welcome! Let me know if you'd like to come along and if you'll be bringing any children with you. I'm organising a craft project to keep the little ones busy so the Moms can chat.

bebejam · 24/06/2005 21:33

thanks for the insight about the upcoming scan, it puts my mind a bit more at ease knowing what to expect.

originally, I am from Nevada/Arizona/Idaho (we moved around as my Dad worked for the U.S. Gov. branch of Native American Indian affairs) I usually just say I'm from Idaho, as that is where I have lived the longest. (But I had been living in New York City for four years until this past year when we moved to London).

It is fun to see such a diverse crowd on here.

I've been homesick since the second trimester kicked in, sometimes I find my self missing the smell of a mountain pine forest... and sometimes it is the smell of freshly baked New York bagles.

I love London, and am enjoying it here so much. The people I've met here have been so kind. I just feel at a bit of a disadvantage as getting used to all the differences is a steep learning curve, and at times I feel at a disadvantage not understanding how everything works.

My husband talks to my belly every night in the hopes that at least the baby will be able to understand him (his Northern Irish accent is still so strong that rarely a day goes by that I don't have to ask him to repeat something )

ChaCha · 25/06/2005 08:21

Hi Bebejam and welcome
I have a good friend from Idaho, Boise to be exact - am sure you must be missing the States, I lived abroad for quite a few years (7 in all) and there are lots of things that i miss about that.

At last...some air!! Ahhh! Well Beks, have you decided where you're taking DS today? I'm off to Heathrow to see my dad off and then hopefully stop for a bite of lunch...food always being no.1 priority these days!

3 more weeks of work to go.....yipeeee!!!

Chacha..almost 18wks

tessasmum · 25/06/2005 08:25

Bebejam - I can really sympathise with you and trying to figure out how things work here. The whole pregnancy thing is a steep learning curve anyway (though nothing compared to when the baby arrives but I don't want to scare you!) and trying to get to grips with a new culture too, especially as people assume that because you speak the language things must be the same. I struggled when I arrived from N.Ireland and that's the same damn country!!

Whereabouts is your husband from? There are some people I have known for years and I still have to ask them to repeat things so you are not alone there!

tessasmum · 25/06/2005 08:27

Mmmmmm, food!! I think breakfast is required. DH and DD still asleep but I think me and the bump need feeding. Good excuse for a 2nd breakfast when they do emerge!!!
