Oh I got to tx maxx check out these babaslings, I am sure they won't have them in the south west though its not the most well stocked shop in the world!

erica I am hoping to get some from the site that someone linked me to, on the thread I posted a link too. A secondhand site for slings! But if not, tkmaxx? . kyte thanks for the connecta sling site - I love the look of them, cross between a baby bjorn which I had with DD and a mei tai...Beepbeep I did not get on with the baby bjorn when DD was a newborn either. I used it around the house from about 10 weeks, but she was born tiny and they were just not comfy for her or me, I was worried about squashing her, but felt much more comfortable with her out and about when she was bigger, more when she was able to hold her head a bit better. I like the idea of a ring sling style for proper newborn, and a mei tai like one for a bit older newborn plus. I would quite like one of those that is just like a loop you sling over your shoulder, like a bit of stretchy material, but I can't find them... any ideas what they are called?

laugs OMG what a pain in the ass, to not be able to access anything how frustrating! I am frustrated as several people I know have literally just had babies so are getting all the handmedowns (first babies, so I have to let them I guess! ).

DH and I have done a huge amount today. DH has put on first coat of whitewash onto the plaster in our new bedroom YEY! not there yet by a long shot, but its moving forward! DD's toys, clothes etc are in our current bedroom, she has moved in properly, and we are just sharing by having our bed there, all our furniture is in the spare room in prep for moving upwards. Its not ideal as we will need to mvoe all her stuff to change carpets and decorate, but I feel like we have made some progress.

Tamlin · 13/09/2009 22:51

We have the Bjorn which was great once DS was old enough - he was never that happy with his face buried in daddy's chest, and loved looking out at the world. I think it really depends on the kid whether they want to face in or out once they get to six weeks or so... I also have a ring sling, but I'm thinking about getting a smaller pouch sling for when the baby's tiny. I really want both hands free for chasing DS, and the ring sling has an awful lot of material.

We had a free day today, so I got the obligatory Boots trip for hospital bag stuff over with. Once we totted up the arnica, cocodamol, vitamins, nappies, cotton wool, gigantic maternity pads, face wipes, and muslins, it came to a grand total of £45 - nearly all of it for stuff to mop up leaking goop from me or the baby, basically. Lovely.

Where's a good place to buy dark button-down flannel nighties..? Marks and Sparks seem to have them for £20 or so and I'm not sure I want to spend that on something I'm going to bleed all over. On the other hand, not keen on sleeping in scratchy nylon Primark stuff.

PavlovtheForgetfulCat · 13/09/2009 22:57

Oh I am all lost with slings and carriers again! I thought I knew what I wanted, but now I am not so sure! I got the baby bjorn from a charity shop, £7! it was a bargain and got a LOT of use out of it, DD being so tiny for so long I was able to carry her in it much past the normal time As such it was minging and had to be thrown!

I now like the look of the connecta slings Oh I am like a kid on a toy shop, I want them all

PavlovtheForgetfulCat · 14/09/2009 07:04

what a horrific night! DH decided when he came to bed to say good night to me and ask me if there was anything I needed before he went to sleep. Which was lovely. Except I was in a nice deep sleep and he bloody woke me up and I could not get back to sleep! Then he nagged me for figiting !! I got up in the end and dozed on the sofa, muscles all achey after working too hard yesterday, and then DD woke at about 5am, been awake ever since to DH going 'go to sleep DD go to sleep, stop talknig to her, go to sleep' then finally I say, we shall get up and get up, he says 'you must be knackered, you won't be able to go to work today, do you want me to get up?' Why didn't you do that an hour ago ? . So he is loudly snoring in the bedroom, and we are watching Dora.

Least we will be ready for nursery in time!

southernbelle77 · 14/09/2009 07:09

Pavlov is THIS what you mean by the sling you just pop over your shoulder? This is what I'm going to get I think and tk maxx had them for £25ish here. I had a traditional baby carrier for dd but didn't really like it or find it comfortable and these seem so much easier. We've just booked our holiday for February when baby will be 3 months and thought it would be good for that too.

We have blackout curtains for dd and did from when she was a baby, as didn't want her waking up at the crack of dawn when the sun came up (she's summer born). Can't say it worked that great as she has always been an early riser!! Hoping this little one will sleep better!

I woke up last night with such bad acid reflux that I started choking in my sleep. It was horrible Then this morning I woke up feeling really sick and (sorry TMI) vommited up lots of bile. Urrrggggghhhhh, it wasn't nice.

Going to see a friend today with her newborn (3 weeks now) baby girl! Makes me all broody!!

PavlovtheForgetfulCat · 14/09/2009 07:27

southernbelle not that one, but i do like those, the one i have seen is literally just a piece of elasticated material, short (you need to size it) I guess I have looked at far too many slings now! .

Oh how horrible to choke on acid reflux! that sounds awful. I have been lucky enough not to be affected too badly at night with reflux, which is just a very unpleasant thing indeed. I hope it passes quickly for you. Have you tried drinking milk when you get it? That is meant to work.

We have blackout blinds but not sure how much they help. Will find out soon as we have none in DDs new bedroom yet so will see if she wakes up earlier (if anything like this morning is to go by then yes!). Will let you know!

beepbeep · 14/09/2009 07:45

www.naturalbabyshower.co.uk/vmchk/-0/close-baby-carrier.html

this is the sling I have, the baby can lie in it as well as legs down, forwards facing and also on your back (never used it like this though). It is basically a wrap sling without all the hassle of tying the long material - you just set it up the firt time and then just loosen it t tae it off, then next time pop it over your head and tighten it up next time you us it. The only problem I found with carriers like the baba was that I felt like the baby was going to fall out if I bent over - am sure it wouldn't have!!

Pavlov - sounds like a nightmare, i didn't have a great one - DD came into our room wanting me to read a book at 3.45, so put her back to bed, then DS was awake coughing until 5.15 bless him so up and own to him a few times. DH apparently slept through it all

Tamlin - I have to do the 'mop up' shop soon, am staying with my parents for a week at end of next month - i might leave it until then and try and involve my mum in something babywise - am sure she'd bereally chuffed to be buying maternity and breast pads!! I would be going on 38 weekson my return tho so maybe leaving it a little late? could always get rest of bag sorted i suppose.

I have 2 days this week with no children - yippee!!! I decided to bring my maternity leave forward by 2 weeks, so cancelled what a/l i had booked in those weeks - but our duties dept won't allow me to take them over to next year, so had to take some more leave (gutted!!). Plan on painting the hall and stairs so a trip to homebase is in order today so i have the paint ready!

Trikken · 14/09/2009 08:10

I too had a bad night and woke up choking. (same as southernbelle actually) dh made sure I was ok though but after that sleep didnt really happen.

must get ds ready for playgroup i guess. will catch up properly later.

BeckyBendyLegs · 14/09/2009 08:21

Wow I am spoilt for choice with slings! There are loads about, aren't there? Hmmm. I don't know.

Southernbelle poor you with the acid reflux. I am a fellow sufferer - it is just the yuckiest thing ever. Milk doe help but it doesn't cure it. Gaviscon helps but if I have too much it makes me feel sick the next morning!

Pavlov oh dear your dH waking you up! I've given up on getting a good night's sleep now...until the baby is 6 months old!! So about 9 months from now!

Oooh better go take everyone to school!

scarlotti · 14/09/2009 08:26

sorry to hear about the bad night's sleeps or early starts, it really is one of the more annoying aspects of pg I think as you feel so rubbish for the rest of the day.

beepbeep love the look of that close sling ... wondering now if I can justify one of those as well as the BabaSling. Might go for a quick look on eBay to see!

Off into town today, am looking for some bits for my hospital bag and also some sort of joggers/leggings to throw on in the last few weeks/first few weeks with baby whilst around the house.

What were the arnica tablets for again?

scarlotti · 14/09/2009 08:27

Oh, meant to say pavlov does this mean the builders have gone finally if your DH is now on the painting? Hope it's becoming a bit less stressful for you now.
I remember the amount of painting that's needed, hang in there

Mummy2be2009 · 14/09/2009 08:31

xxxx

scarlotti · 14/09/2009 08:33

Glad you found us mummy2b don't worry about the Braxton Hicks, I've been getting them on and off for months. It's just your body practising what to do for contractions.

Scarlotti - I got my sling second hand, think it was off mumsnet, I paid about £30 for it and I use it tonnes. Try searching ebay or sling sites as often people have them for sale. Arnica is for bruising in the nether regions (!!) following the birth! Can get it in crem, spray or tablet form, but most people i know seem to prefer th tablets (homeopathic).

Tabbykat · 14/09/2009 08:58

Morning - hope everyone had a really good weekend? Have finally made some prgress with preparation for this baby and been v busy washing all DD's old stuff that's been in the loft. Laugs sorry to hear you can't get to your stuff - it's so annoying for you.
After weeks of me nagging DH has finally started helping and have managed to get cot sorted, baby car seat cleaned and quite a few other jobs done - feeling a bit more under control now in case baby comes early. Mind you, would be even better if DD hadn't found the labour snacks and started tucking in - hmmm

Erika - I would love a copy of that CD if it's not too much trouble for you - will email you if that's ok? Hope you not missing DP too much and that you feeling better after your scare last week.

EasyEggs - saw your query about low placentas - I have the same and am back to Pembury next week to see if it has moved at all.

Saw my midwife and she said it's as well I;m, being scanned next week for that as otherwise she'd be sending me anyway as the baby is in a v awkward position - feet down and head stuck under my ribs. V cross as have been doing everything I can to get it to turn - yoga, bouncing on my ball, pelvis in the air, and still nothing. She did say that subsequent babies can turn later than first ones tho as they have more room where everything is so stretched

Hope everyone has a nice day, xx

scarlotti · 14/09/2009 09:01

beepbeep thanks, I have a homeopathic kit at home so will go and have a little look in there first.
Just put a few slings on watch on eBay as they have some on there. Am happy to buy them on eBay as I figure I can always sell them again if I don't get on with them, or once they're finished with.

I have used tea tree oil in the bath for my nether regions afterwards too - good antiseptic properties to help with healing.

Oh the joys!

wook · 14/09/2009 09:09

Hi all can't believe so many messages, am lost!
Bras: a reasonably good site for cheap Hot milk, elle mc pherson, etc maternity bras is zodee.com- you can be a member and get discounts and they often do free knickers with a bra etc. Though not cheap, they are cheaper than in the shops by a good amount. I have had two hotmilk bras from them this pg and v happy with but i made sure i got measured first and tried the bras on in the real shops. But the yellow bra I bought shows through literally EVERYTHING! I thought it would be nice and neutral!

Was it Laugs saying about boobs not growing? Mine are usually tiny which is why I buy bras online but when they grew in pg and bfing they got horrendous stretch marks- this time round I am making sure I use cocoa butter on boob area as well as bump!

I haven't ever tried a sling but am a fan of the wilkinet carrier which is kind of a bridge between a sling and a more fixed Baby Bjorn type carrier.

Sympathy all round on the bad night's sleep: ds came in bed yesterday night at about 4am and that was it for me!! watched the dawn sky for the next three hours..

Laugs · 14/09/2009 09:30

Wow I am completely overwhelmed by all this sling advice! We've been given one by a guy at DH's work. I can't remember what it is now, but I think more of the Baby Bjorn style. There's no instructions with it though - does anyone know what age these are suitable from?

Spoke to my dad again and they definitely can't access the storage facility . It's annoying me a bit because both he and my mum are acting like it's nothing, yet (having an older brother and 2 older cousins) I spent my entire childhood in hand-me-downs. Anyway, I am getting over it browsing lots of online shops and ebay!
kyte sorry for your moth problem too, that sounds so annoying!

I'm sure this has been done already, but I wasn't paying attention : do you think this is enough, clothing-wise, or is there anything else I need?

5 short-sleeved vests
5 long-sleeved tops
5 trousers
5 long-sleeved suits
hat
socks
3 cardis
2 gro-bags

Am I right in thinking gro-bags can only be used from 1 month old?

Also, meant to say "wayay ninjacat man!". Sorry to disappoint but I'm not really a Geordie - I'm from Cheltenham! I've lived here long enough to master the accent though (in my head at least)

Laugs · 14/09/2009 09:54

yep that's for at home! how many do you think I need? I haven't got a clue what I had last time!

Laugs · 14/09/2009 10:15

hmm I can see now why people find out the sex!

scarlotti · 14/09/2009 10:21

Laugs how often will you be doing washing? Work that out and then you can work out what you need.
We have a lot but that's because we have ds' old stuff and also some stuff from my db.

If you're washing daily then you could probably get away with what you have above, but I'd bank on a potential 3 changes a day if yours is a sicky or explosive poo-ey baby. If you're planning the sleepsuits just for night though, and the trousers/tops for day then you have 10 changes there. A few more vests might be good, and you're going to need some sort of snowsuit type thing for when you go out.

ursigurke · 14/09/2009 10:36

Kyte, interesting that you find Hoppediz slings too thick. I found mine rather thin (compared to didymos, they have a really thick model) and I know that they have an even thinner model as well. Anyway, as the one that I got in change is really too short for the types of wrapping that I will probably use most, I'll have to reorder the longer one again. I guess, in the end, it doesn't really matter, I'm planning on having more than one child and as the brand is very good and known, I will always be able to resell it as well.
wook, it was me talking about non-growing boobs and I'm already using oil to keep the skin soft but I guess, if they have to expand too quickly once the milk comes in, I will get horrible stretchmarks anyway.

Sorry for those with sleeping problems. I have usually difficulties to fall asleep and sometimes get my restless leg syndrom, not always though. At least I can be sure that if one or several nights have been rather short, there will eventually be one with enough sleep (when I'm just too tired)

Laugs · 14/09/2009 10:52

scarlotti I'll probably wash daily/ most days. I'd forgotten about the explosive poos! But then I think DD was a fairly clean newborn, all the multiple clothing changes seemed to come later with her - doesn't mean the next one will be like that though.
It's annoying how all the unisex newborn clothing seems to be white, beige or grey. I don't want muted colours! I want bright and bold yellow, green, purple, orange, red. I saw some tops like this is H&M but they didn't have the poppers on the bottom, which they need I think.

ursi my boobs haven't really grown that much this time. I guess we'll just have to wait and see what happens!
