Pixie - I'm glad everyone's excited about the twins! Could they not see at the scan if they're identical or not, from the sacs or something... did they tell you anything about that?

A little story re twins: My grandmother only wanted one child, and she had a boy. Then she didn't think she could get pregnant when BF, but she did, so she had a girl too. Then many years later she didn't think she could get pregnant because she was too old... but she did, and she had twins! (My dad and his brother.) They had always been told they were non-identical because they had 2 sacs when born... apparently there's outer and inner sacs though so a bit confusing... But lots of people have said that they gotta be identical so they had a DNA test this year, and they are.

I think the boy/girl signs thing I posted is a lot of b**locks! But, I read somewhere else that 71% of mothers who feel that they think they know what they're having, are right! I think I'm having a boy, but so I did last time and I was wrong. I'm trying not to think of it but I'm so curious! Roll on 5 November...

Mumbot - if the sonographer said she thinks it's a boy, she's probably right! She must have seen some "equipment" between its (his) legs... I asked at my 12 scan but she just said it's too early, bah.

Wow Pixie twins !
I have to say I'm not in the least bit jealous but with 3 under your belt so to speak already I'm sure you're an expert!
As for the boy/girl thing. I was absolutely convinced DD was a girl from early on - most of the checklist came back with mixed responses for girl or boy however in 3rd trimester I was admitted to hosp twice and they stick you on the monitor all the time and DD definitely sounded like a galloping horse rather than a train which had me even more convinced she was a girl. Also DH and I were living in different countries when she was conceived (so I could pinpoint it exactly!)- it was very, very early in my cycle so that also added to my 'it's a girl' theory.
This time I don't know when I conceived but as I've been so sick and I wasn't with DD I've decided this one must be a boy!
As for the yellow mac - I got soaked last pregnancy as my waterproof trousers wouldn't get close to getting over my belly so FOR DOG WALKING ONLY in wet Wales I am still considering it I'm really not a slave to fashion!
I've taken out my pitiful maternity selection from last time and think a bit of shopping is in order (apart from the yellow mac!) I've got bigger a lot earlier this time so my regular clothes aren't going to be much use,
Someone was asking about v shaped pillows - sorry can't remember who and I can't be arsed scrolling back but YES they are great. I used mine for sleeping when I got a bit bigger, for breastfeeding and then for propping up DD when she was sitting but still at the wobbly stage. There are some items you buy that get used for such a short space of time but the V shaped pillow has been great and of course I'll be using it again soon!

hi all

OMG Pixie - Congrats. I'm a twin but don;t think i'd cope well for my first - sure as a pro you'll do fine!!

Been cot and pram shopping today with DH. Know what cot etc but still struggling with pram. I know there's no hurry but my DH only gets 1 in 7 weekends off and we are away the next two of them so we don't get time together do this kind of thing. Now got in down to M & P Switch or Silver Cross Freeway. Silvercross is bigger when folded but is cheaper but from some reviews I've seen some people struggle to fit car seat belt round the ventura car seat you buy for it. Any personal knowledge? yes I can drive my and hubbys cars to the shop and try it but what about parents and friends who we may travel with - is this gonna be a pain? The down side for the M & P seems to be that the pattern I like is made of a cord material which DH is worried won't dry out if it gets wet?? Again - any knowledge?? Also it is about 150 quid more by the time you buy all the extras.

I'm after a 4 wheeler rear/front facing pushchair suitable from birth. Can't find the brittax vigour locally and don't want to buy what we haven't tried so that is gonna have to be ruled out.

Hope you're all having a fab weekend. xxx

MummyElk · 12/09/2009 22:26

hi scooby
Not sure tbh on the stroller front, several friends with m+p prams have ended up being fed up with them, bit tricky to fold/size etc. i don't know ANYONE who is ultimately 100% with their stroller/buggy choices though, so as long as you are prepared to have some sort of issue with it at some point, then you'll be fine! E.g my first one was great till 7 months when DD wanted to sit up properly and it wouldn't (cue tantrums, mine and hers). My second hand Jane is lovely, but the brake makes a sticky noise the whole time.
I LOVED buggy shopping though, nice to do it with hubby too! It is worth spending the extra if you've done your research though, i didn't and think i should have done.

Bladder full, off to loo again. had a couple of sips of red wine this evening - quite enjoyed it i know v naughty but i'm paying for it with a headache now!! naughty elk

PacificDogwood · 13/09/2009 07:58

Morning All,
my main bit of advice on prams/buggies is to buy something that is light enough that you can actually lift it into the back of the car/up your back steps.
I had a Mutsy Urban Rider for DS1, in fact still have it and it will be used for this LO. It is very sturdy, good for going off road, v comfy for tiny baby - but built like a tank and immediately after delivery when I had NO stomach and NO pelvic floor muscles to speak of I could not even tilt it to get up a curb ! And babies have the pesky tendency to get heavier as time goes on ...
Mine were in Mclaren's from about 4-6 months onwards and I love my current one.

Other then that, am feeling sorry for myself, have a stinking cold, inherited from DS1 no doubt, and have been up since before 6 for Paracetamol and hot tea.
DS3 now awake, so the day proper begins, hurray!

pureeandpearls · 13/09/2009 08:24

I loved my M&P Pliko (like switch) for six months when it got too heavy to carry down station steps. Got a Silver Cross Pop and love it. I am glad I had the first as was a much more comfortable ride for newborn. I think now people tend to switch pushchairs rather than stick with one, especially when you get good deals on eBay and MN. Check out the Foe Sale boards- MN mums usually sell excellent second hand pushchairs.

annamama · 13/09/2009 09:54

Scooby - before we had DD I decided that all "proper" prams/pushchairs were both too heavy and too expensive... so we bought a second hand pram on ebay for £25 which we used for about 4 months, then we bought a new MacLaren Quest (£120-ish), which DD has always been very happy and comfy in, and it's so light, you fold it and lift it with one hand! Oh, that was a long sentence. The only thing MacLaren is not too good for is really bumpy or gravelly roads, but for that you need a 3 wheeler really... I think there's a more expensive MacLaren you can use from birth too, the Techno(?) I'm not paid by MacL by the way to advertise their products!

I'm taking DD to London today to visit friends, must go! Hope everyone is having a relaxing weekend.

hi everyome for both of my Dc's i have had the INGLESINA ZIPPY and am def going to use DD's again, xxx

we went for a doy out to thomas land at drayton manor yesterday and had a fab time, for those of you on fb i have added some pics

Dalrymps · 13/09/2009 10:46

Just popping in to say WOW Pixie twins!!! So exciting, now you have the surprise of finding out whether they're identical and the sex

swingsofglory · 13/09/2009 15:39

Just want to second what annamamma said about the Maclaren Quest - i think it's brilliant, but not suitable until they're sitting up.

Somebody told me you will inevitably end up with two prams / pushchairs. One for when the baby is very small which is more like a pram and another stroller type for when they get bigger as it's so much lighter. We certainly did (second-hand Quinny Buzz first and then the Maclaren Quest). The only people I can think of who have only ever used one had either a Maclaren Techno or a Phil and Teds. If i had my time over again I would have got a Phil and Teds but then again I do really like the Maclaren pushchairs (I am also not employed by them either - although if anyone reading this is, I wouldn't mind a discount!)

Arcadie · 13/09/2009 17:45

I'm all for the Phil and Ted's meself.

ilovegreenbeans · 13/09/2009 18:22

i have a bugaboo frog- and in dd's 18m have not needed anything else. It's come on planes, buses, trains, cabs, boats, etc and never had a problem. Totally recommend it. Wish they did a double though, as I don't think dd will be able to buggyboard at 2. Maybe I'll be surprised, but I am probably going to need a double, at least for a little while.

RetroMum1 · 13/09/2009 19:10

Evening All

Congratulations Pixie, twins what fantastic news!

As for buggies I have had 4 and DD is only 2! I had a bugaboo cameleon first which I love and still use but is big to throw in the boot!. Then I got the quinny zapp which I hated and put on Ebay. Then I got the phil and teds for jogging which has been great as i can look after DD's friends and go out and I also don't need to buy another now!. Then we have just got the maclaren xt for Disneyland next week. DD loves it and it's is vvery light wuick and easy. So there you are I am a pramoholic!

MummyElk · 13/09/2009 19:24

just also thought, i'm seriously considering looking for a really old fashioned pram in charity shops etc, they quite often have a seat near the handles for the older child (DD would love it) and i quite like the look of them... apparently they are all the rage in Denmark...but we'll see!! could well be talkingoutmyarse daydreaming too much...

pureeandpearls · 13/09/2009 19:30

[whispers: I have a Silver Cross Carriage Pram with toddler seat and I love it, but it doesn't fit in the car...]

PacificDogwood · 13/09/2009 20:51

I think Emmaljunga (Danish, aren't they?) are good for prams with toddler seats, but always thought they were too big. Have never owned one though, so what do I know ?

DS3 will be exactly 2 when this LO comes along so not quite sure what we will do. Probably a combination of slinging newborn + DS3 in McLaren XLR, newborn in Mutsy with DS3 on toddlerboard (??) or dig out the old Out'n'About Double Nipper we still have from DSs1 and 2 who were only 12 months apart and I truly would not have managed without a double pram of some sort. Now that I think back, I loved that pram.. . Something to look forward too. I am almost relieved I will not have to do any major baby shopping for this one.

Emmaljunga are swedish BRIO prams are also all the rage in sweden but I think they're very expensive and not even sold here.

We've been eyeing up the Jane Powertwin, no I'm not having twins but I think we will probably need a double, as DD will be just under 2. It looks great but is so expensive. We keep looking on ebay, especially for the blue one...

We are not poor but we hate spending lots of money if we don't have to! A lot of our baby gear has been from ebay, charity shops, car boot sales, NCT sales, etc.

Pixie I guess you can just put them next to each other, I'm sure they will like that!

We had a great day out in London, I miss it there, we might move back soon... But not too central, thinking more leafy suburb. It's always the location vs house size compromise.

OP posts:
ilovegreenbeans · 13/09/2009 21:26

you can buy BRIO prams here- the Joy and the Go. Friend has Joy- she's Swedish- it's lovely, but BIG

pureeandpearls · 13/09/2009 21:29

With you on that Annamama- I just spend the good money on myself (not!)

Pacific- a 12 month age gap- eek?

Looking for advice from the pro-mums, as I'll have a 21 month gap...or less...SPD has gotten worse and last time I was induced at 38 weeks because of the pain, so watch this space for an early induction.

Having a bit of a panic, and trying very hard to stay calm. Had a moment when I thought I might be leaking fluid. Admittedly I'm shit at remembering my pelvic floors but I'm sure. Nothing since then so may just have been excess CM [are you grossed out yet?] but still a little worried. And I HAVE to go in to work tomorrow. Have MW on Tuesday morning....

PacificDogwood · 13/09/2009 21:37

Puree, 12 months and 10 days . DS2 was 9 weeks premature so it should have been a chasm of a gap of 14 months, really!
And, SPD is a b, sorry to hear you are suffering. I've had it on and off since my late teens, usually worse in pregnancy, but last time it stopped after @ 30 weeks! So good luck, every pregnancy is different, yadda, yadda, you might have a better time this time round .
Re fluid, the MWs can check v easily if this is liquor or not, try not to worry.

Pixie, yes, doorways, that is true but the DoubleNipper does fit just through most standard doors. I found the tandem double buggies too much effort to get up curbs and I also liked how they could fight interact with each other once they were a bit older.

annamama · 13/09/2009 21:43

Puree - I don't know but I think it could well be excess CM. I've had quite wet knickers myself sometimes (TMI sorry). Call midwife tomorrow and ask what she thinks!

ILGB - Oh I so want a swedish friend to talk swedish with kids... she doesn't live in Kent / S London does she?

Also, I finally got the book I ordered: "Mummy what's in your tummy?". I thought it would be educational and help DD understand what's going on. Erm no. I think she would be very confused by it. The mummy has got all sorts of weird things in her tummy, like horses and dinasaurs. Only on the last page is there a tiny picture of a baby. I'll be sticking it back on ebay, and I need a better book!

Hi everyone. Hope you all had great weekends. Wow Pixie, many congratulations on the twins! What brilliant news - I guess you must've been a little shocked when you were told!

Well, (I guess thankfully?) I definitely only have the one baby! I had my scan this morning and there he/she was - very active indeed. It was lovely having the scan and seeing the baby moving around like crazy So my big bump is just me being fat really and nothing to do with carrying triplets twins I get the nuchal results back in the next week or so, but hopefully everything will be ok there.
