Jessysmummy - yep, it was d/h who got the brunt of my hormones - v freaky, i just keep saying 'sorry - must be my hormones' but I can see how that may wear thin soon.... hope things are better for you at home soon.

jessysmummy · 06/06/2005 11:54

KF - thats what I planned to do with dd but got used to the disposables and never switched. Not sure now that cloth nappies would cope with dd's wriggling. Also doubt whether nursery would keep nappy buckets on site. Was thinking about getting some just for night time when she's not so active and if anyone asks me if there's anything they can get us for new baby was intending to point them in the direction of cloth nappies. But now I'm worried that I'll be single handedly destroying the ozone layer by washing the things !
Elasticated - The hormone excuse ran out when I was about 5 weeks pg! Hoping dh will have mercy - have sent him an olive branch in the form of an email .

I think I have expanded overnight.

Two people today have asked when the baby is due and expressed surprise that it is September.

Right, I need to pack everything for our holiday, then go to nursery to watch DS toddling for Barnardos and then drive to Dover. But needed to sit down for a bit first. I won't believe we are on holiday until it happens.

Kiwifruit · 06/06/2005 12:07

JM - I suspect that I might end up doing that too... , but I do have good intentions of making the switch...

PC - have a fantastic holiday! I've had a few people express the same surprise when I say September - am thinking I might start lying and say I'm due in August!!

zubb · 06/06/2005 12:09

reusables vs disposable - I think you have to look at why you are using them. Yes, with the washing and tumble drying you are probably using as much energy as is used to produce the disposables, but you are not then also contributing to the landfill mountain of nappies ( I use fleece liners so don't throw any of the nappy away each time). You also save money - especially if you use them for subsequent children or sell them when you have finished with them.
The times when we are away for a weekend / week I am horrified about the pile of nappies that we put in the bin.
Also, I often wash nappies in with other whites if they are not too dirty, just add another rinse cycle and don't add softener. That way I'm not doing an extra wash as such, just throwing 3 or 4 nappies on top of what I would have done.
With ds1 I thought I'd give it a go - after 6 weeks - and see how it went and haven't had any problems. We will need some new nappies this time as after ds1 and ds2 some are looking a bit worse for wear!

Boompi · 06/06/2005 12:14

This exhaustion thing for me seems so changeable - some days (like most of last week) I feel unable to do anything but sleep, work and eat. At other times I feel 'almost' normal. Spent weekend car shopping(my car is a two door) and clearing room that will be nursery. Couldnt find any cars in our price range but feel like we did some constructive at least.

Also started visiting nurseries - They seem quite similar really - guess wont fully understand till baby is here! In our area we need to have name on waiting list 10 months in advance! So about now.

Hope you sort things out with DH JM.

Re nappies - I am also very confused now as to what is most eco-friendly. DH very keen on reusables. Anyone know a link to recent reports re debate? Nursey will be an issue too as I think they want disposables.

jessysmummy · 06/06/2005 12:50

Still nonethewiser on the nappies debate. Think will use both kinds this time and then I know I'm half doing my bit for the environment either way!
Thanks for concern - DH just emailed me back (hurrah! ) Decided it's a combination of hormones, tiredness (dd is cutting some more back teeth) and stress of visiting ILs. So are now on speaking terms again. I know I'll get a nice welcome home tonite !
Have also decided we need to do a bit more preparation for dd2/ds1. We've done nothing so far as it's #2 and was beginning to think that bump's going to be a bit neglected compared to dd. Have began hoping this one will be a boy so at least his clothes won't be hand downs!

andif · 06/06/2005 12:53

Re washable v disposable - there was a thread on here about the recent report, and most people I have spoken to agree that it was probably sponsored by Pampers!!
I think that as long as you don't tumble dry (regularly), don't wash at 90c and use for more than one child (that's why I've bought some 2nd hand) they are DEFINITELY more eco friendly. Also, v v cute and better for baby's bits than all those nasty chemicals!
A good friend has managed washables with 2 children in a flat with no garden and no tumble drier without any hassle - just bought brands which dried quickly.

zubb · 06/06/2005 12:54

try this - might be a bit biased as they strongly support the use of reusables - WEN

jessysmummy · 06/06/2005 12:58

Thanks folks!
...which brings me on to the great debate of which ones???????
The only ones I've seen in stores are Kooshies (Kushies?). I don't really like shopping online. Don't trust it!

zubb · 06/06/2005 13:04

the other ones that sell in shops tend to be Bambino Mio. The two systems are different - BM are in 2 parts - a wrap, and a 'nappy' that you fold into shape and put in the wrap, while Kooshies are all-in one.
I prefer the Kooshie type for the first few months and then the BM type after that but it really depends on the baby / washing that you do.
The all-in one will take longer to dry, but I always find that at the beginning you are only using the wrap once rather than the few times that it says as the newborn poo gets everywhere!
Do you have a scheme near you where someone will come out and show you the different types - a Nappy Lady type thing. They are usually advertised in doctor surgeries if you have one.

pooka · 06/06/2005 13:10

I tried cotton bottoms but didn't get on with them with dd - am considering reusables this time as have washing line and utility room now, so space for a nappy bin. BUT - don't have a clue about what tpe to go for, and have reservations about how BIG they are compared to the relatively slimline diposables. Clothes these days seem to be really tight around the bum (honestly - dd isn't a chubby baby at all). Will have to give it a bit more consideration.
Haven't really sorted anything out for the babe. I hope it is a girl in some ways from a purely practical point of view as would love to reuse dd's gorgeous clothes!

franch · 06/06/2005 13:14

Hi all, will catch up with all the chat shortly, this is just a quickie re. Yogabase this eve - can't make it unfortunately but will try Thurs and also next Mon - hope to see some of you at one of these

jessysmummy · 06/06/2005 13:31

Thanks Zubb - will scout around for a nappy lady type thing. I know that I'm just out of the catchment area for a free nappy laundering service
Pooka - know what you mean about the bum size in clothes - legs always seem too long too. must be a lot of strange shaped children around with tiny bums and really long legs!

andif · 06/06/2005 13:32

I've done quite a lot of research into nappies (I know, I must get a life.......). Best seem to be totsbots and imse vimse as the nappies are one size for all and don't seem to leak. Imse ones are made of flannelette which dries v quickly but can need extra booster pads as they get older (baby not nappy!) Both need separate wraps over the top. Friend also said organic terries used with a nappy nippa are brill as cheap and dry v quickly.

Dh waiting to hear today if he's got a new job- not sure if he really wants it anyway, but suspense is killing me.....

milward · 06/06/2005 13:43

Will be trying eco-disposables this time around -moltex I think they're called. Can order them over the internet. Will check website address. A parent at school recommended them. Would need to get another washing machine to cope with reusable ones as already have 2/3 loads a day. No nappy service here. Don't have a tumble dryer - and wouldn't want one.

Boompi · 06/06/2005 14:01

Very basic question. Do reusables make house smell more than disposables? Or much the same? We dont have a utility room so bucket would be in our bathroom.

singleteenagemum · 06/06/2005 14:01

hi everyone,

not too sure if i'm in the right place. But is everyone/anyone due in Septmember?

jessysmummy · 06/06/2005 14:09

Hi singleteenage mum!
Yes, you are in the right place. We're all due in Sept. Can understand how you were confused though as we have been waffling on a bit about nappies (my fault!).

zubb · 06/06/2005 14:13

boompi - I think that reusables smell less. I put them in a bucket with a lid in the bathroom cupbaord and don't know they're there. I dry pail them - so don't have any liquid in the bucket.

Hi STM - we are all due in September. When are you due? there's a stats thread somewhere with all our dates on.

Boompi · 06/06/2005 14:32

Katts - are you going to yogabase tonight?

LadyLazarus · 06/06/2005 14:51

Greetings from Kosovo! I'm in a rather dingy nd very smoky internet cafe full of men! Oh the glamour! Holiday is going well so far, weather has been good until today's rainy episode. I was a bit worried about how I'd feel on the plane, but I felt fine (wore my flight socks and wiggled my legs non-stop!!).

Kosovo is a good place to be pregnant, as there are lots of cheesy pies to indulge in hehe

Anyway, better get out of here before I choke to death... back online 16th June, love to all xxxxx

singleteenagemum · 06/06/2005 14:52

i'm due on 21st Sept. with my first, a little boy

Boompi · 06/06/2005 15:21

welcome tsm!

Boompi · 06/06/2005 15:21

Stm - sorry pregnancy brain!
