Hello all! Thought I would start this off as our existing thread is full!

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

Hello all

Well congratulations to those with fab news wriggly beanie scans! Mowmi, I hope the wait for your cvs results is bearable. As others have said a 1 in 9 risk is still an 8 in 9 probability of the little one being fine. Quirkychick the triple test is very accurate so fingers crossed for you too.

So I am at work eating takeaway porridge, of all things, which is disturbingly cold and lumpy! Give me crumpets!!!

Pregnancy wise things are OK with me, I am getting bigger and my trousers (loose back in april/may) are now very very tight indeed.. getting to the leaving buttons undone stage.. don't want to fully dig out the maternity stuff as most of that is still too big! I hate this stage when it just looks like I've eaten too much and have a beer belly going on! I haven't felt the baby move for a week or more, although I was feeling it before (and it was definite movements as this is dc2). Very strange!
No worrying symptoms though, other than regular nasty semi-migraine headaches! I hope they go away, oh and my hair is falling out! It didn't do that last time, and I though pg hormones were meant to keep it beautiful and thick! I feel I have been misled and may be bald by the time it arrives!

Re swineflu, relenza is the only thing I would be happy to have if necessary. I would avoid having the vaccine, personally, unless completely essential as I wouldn't be happy unless it has been extensively trialled and as it is so new and still being manufactured I would worry having it in pregnancy. But I may be swayed, if I have to be.

crumpette · 15/07/2009 09:16

Oh and I agree NHS is bonkers- last time I lived ina different part of London which had no NHS classes 'wrong catchment area' and no NCT classes. Had to pay a fortune for private classes which were booked up 6 months in advance (I didn't go in the end) but what is up with that!?

hmpf

MamaLazarou · 15/07/2009 09:30

Hello chicks. I would like to tell you about my wonderful day yesterday. We went for our 12-week scan and it was AMAZING to see the little critter wriggling around in there! I burst into tears when we heard the heartbeat - the most thrilling sound I have ever heard. The baby is 56mm long and looks like he/she has inherited my knobbly knees

When we got back, we made the 'official' announcements and phone calls to everyone - I updated my status on facebook and straight away, about 20 people congratulated us and so many of them remarked that we would be brilliant parents that I got a bit choked up. My best friend's mum said, 'Hooray - I'm going to be a Grandma!' which really made me

Then we embarked upon a Day Of Fun - museums, a posh dinner out and a comedy show in the evening. We feel so happy and lucky and blessed. Everything is wonderful.

Sorry for unbearable smugness of post. I hope you and your miniature creatures are all progressing well.

somewhathorrified · 15/07/2009 10:06

What makes me laugh is that when I saw the Dr, I was told it didn't matter where you live in the country you are offered the same services as everywhere else. I suspect he actually believed what he was saying as here we are pretty much offered everything as far as I can tell, although Chlamydia testing is limited to the under 25's, Oh and no mention of any NHS classes as yet.

crumpette totally know what you mean...am waiting for the outbreak of spots to clear and have no sign of lush thick hair yet. And the increase in speed of hairgrowth is only apparent on my legs! Am definitely thinking that the 'blooming' is a myth to counterbalance the ever decreasing self esteem.

jardins · 15/07/2009 10:41

Good morning all,

I have a slightly embarrassing question to ask you all, which is connected to our friend, Morning Sickness' (mine is afternoon and evening and even night sickness, but what the hell). Apart from dry retching (yummy) I have been most fortunate not to throw up. HOWEVER since the early weeks I have had diarrhea, or loose stools most days. I have no other symptoms so am virtually certain there is no bug or food poisoning but I am getting a little weary of running to the toilet now that I am in my 12th week. Has anybody else experienced this? If so what have you been doing about it?

Best wishes to you all.

bethoo · 15/07/2009 11:03

jardins i have to admit that i get the 'runs' throughout my pregnancy if it is not constipation it is the other! i think it is jsut a hormonal thing. my mw looked at me blankly when i asked her why i had it but then this is my third pregnancy and so it is the norm for me. jsut keep your fluid intake up really.
i appear to be the only one who did not have a nuchal fold test done as we are not offered it at all, you have to go private for that, instead we have the triple blood test when they do your bloods and take into acount your age on conceiving etc. only then if it is high risk do they recommend further assesment.
when i had my scan she only measured the size of the head and put me forward a week so what if the baby just has a big head???

FlightofFancy · 15/07/2009 11:15

Hi all,
Had my scan this morning - and all well! Was absolutely bricking it, as have found this all too easy so far, so had convinced myself I'd made it all up! However, one very wriggly little one performing for the camera. Very freaked out by seeing the jaw bones making eating movements - little bit of an 'urgghh alien' moment!
Haven't got full risk percentage for Downs yet, as they only took bloods for test today, but nuchal measurement was 1.7, which Google tells me (!) is OK. Length of 68.8 at 12.+4, so long at the moment. All very exciting!
We're not going to tell anyone until I get blood results back in the next week or so, just in case. Need to work out how to tell parents without essentially announcing 'we've been having sex' (I'm in my 30s and married, so it shouldn't come as a shock, but still feels odd!!)

jardins · 15/07/2009 11:16

Thanks bethoo for reassuring me. I was beginning to feel a little abnormal: you hear about constipation all the time, but the runs? Hmmmm. At least it keeps the weight gain down . I'm not dehydrated as I am drinking plenty of water. It's just a little bit stressful when you go somewhere .... and SUDDENLY you need the toilet!

Just out of curiosity has anyone else got the runs?

Concerning the nuchal fold test I think it's just as good to do the blood test bethoo. I too only had the latter option with my past pregnancies.

My dilemna now is whether to do the amiocentisis as I am 40 with a 1 in 344 risk. Has anyone else got some figures to throw at me so that I can think seriously about this issue, please? It is so hard for my to THINK when I'm pregnant.)

somewhathorrified · 15/07/2009 11:21

bethoo I wondered a similar thing...being that all humans grow at different rates, how can they give you a due date, surely it should be specified that it's just a guesstimate.

jardins that sounds horrible, but if it's happened all the way through I doubt it's anything other than what your body does. You could look at your diet, see if you can get some more 'binding' foods in there...rice with everything. keep an eye on your hydration levels, water and salt.

Biccy · 15/07/2009 13:08

Hi all
Jardins, I'm afraid I haven't really had the runs - I'm more the other way. But, when things do move and I do have to go, I really have to go right then, and, erm, despite feeling constipated, am softer than normal. Sorry if that's TMI, but you asked!

On the amnio front, I don't know what to say, it's all such a tricky subject. Is 1 in 344 a risk based on bloods or a combined test, or is it your background risk for your age? My background risk is 1:450 (or thereabouts), but I had the combined test (nuchal measurement, combined with weight, age and bloods) and was adjusted to 1:8700. So, I suppose I would say if you are just going by your age, and you are concerned, then try and get an adjusted risk? My information said that the combined test picks up 95% of high risk pregnancies, with the blood test alone picking up only 65%. But you've got to do the nuchal measurement before 14 weeks I think.

Erm, I'd also say that you only had a 1 in 8 chance of your pregnancy reaching this point - don't know if that helps put into perspective the kind of risk 1 in 344 is? It's still very small in percentage terms (0.3% if I've done my sums right), while the amnio carries a risk 0.5%to 1% of spontaneous miscarriage. And I think I'm right in saying that an amnio still only gives you a probability, not a definite answer. I think a chorionic villus sampling is more accurate, and carries a similar risk of miscarriage. I also believe that you can get stats for particular clinics, so you can choose to go somewhere with a low miscarriage rate.

lynneevans51 · 15/07/2009 14:35

Hi everyone - I'm new on here and due 7 Jan 2010.... but how on earth do I join your threads/club here? It's quite full and it seems like you all know each other - or are in midst of conversation....is there a generic DUE JAN 2010 area do you know?????

jardins · 15/07/2009 14:49

Wow Biccy thank you for that complete answer to my question. I am impressed by how knowledgeable you are. The 1/344 is based on the nuchal measurements together with all other sundrie measurements at the 12 week scan. The doctor then plugged all these into his softwear together with my age and got the magic number. He told me the blood tests would not be necessary and seemed to suggest that, although it was clearly my choice, the amiocentisis might not be necessary either. When I register at the hospital or clinic (here in Tours - we move a week ago) I will have an appointment with a genetics specialist to help me make the best decision.

Thanks again Biccy.

Dizzyclarebear · 15/07/2009 14:52

Lynneevans51 - I think you've just joined us Jan 2010's If you go back a few pages you'll find a list of who's due when, copy, paste in a message and add yourself in!

So, has anyone else had the soul distroying task of buying maternity/ non wired bras yet? Did someone decide that pg woman don't need underwear to be the slightest bit attractive and certainly never matching? Just a bit depressing that I look fat, have bags under my eyes from constant sleepiness and can't even wear pretty underwear

jardins · 15/07/2009 14:56

ps Er, I meant to write 'we moveD to Tours a week ago'. BTW my nuchal measurement is 1.09 mm which, the doctor said, was very good. (Never thought before I'd gloat about a nuchal skin test.)

quirkychick · 15/07/2009 15:08

Here the cut off is 1/250 for an offer of amniocentesis if that helps. I am waiting for the triple test to see if it lowers my risk and then make the decision. Last night the consultant told me that an amnio gives you a definite answer as does cvs. Cvs is more risky re mc so it is offered if the nuchal results in a very high risk so bypassing the blood test.

Welcome lynneevans51 this is the due jan 2010!

lynneevans51 · 15/07/2009 15:08

Thanks Dizzyclarebear. I bought my first non-wired bras today. I had a breast reduction op 3 years ago so the thought of boobs getting bigger again does not fill me with glee and indeed, it really doesn't matter if I have non-wired or not as my milk production is likely to be minimal. However, of course staff can't actually sell you wired bras once they know - or you disclose you're PG - so ugly non-wired bras I now have....

misschatterbox · 15/07/2009 15:10

I finally had my booking in appointment with the mw, at 12wks. Too late to book a nuchal scan on the NHS, so I've booked a private scan for next Wednesday.

somewhathorrified · 15/07/2009 15:13

lynneevans welcome to the mad house !

dizzyclarebear I'm currently trying to avoid the maternity wear issue...literally, I turned the laptop on to have a look at picking some things up, but got easily distracted and came on here instead. I really am going to have to go and do it...wish me luck!

skidoodle · 15/07/2009 15:25

welcome lynneevans to the generic due 2010 list

"However, of course staff can't actually sell you wired bras once they know"

Huh? Are you kidding? Lots of people think there's no problem at all with wearing underwires while pregnant.

I'm in sports bras because that's what I found comfortable last time (was in agony then, no problems this go around) and I'm happy with it. Have you really found people unwilling to sell you underwired bras because you're pregnant? When I lived in the states I worked in a maternity shop and we sold underwired maternity bras (and nursing bras).

Dizzyclarebear I'm in my last time bras so far as I just haven't found the time to shop for new ones. The first time I slipped on the lovely properly-sized non-wired bra I thought I might give the bra lady a big snog for making me so comfortable.

My underwear almost never matches anyway, so I am just impressed that you are in a position to be sad about not doing it now I'm not enjoying feeling fat and bag-eyed either. We're really on the cusp of having bumps, so soon we'll all look gorgeous (for a while).

lynneevans51 · 15/07/2009 15:28

Oh yes - good old Marks & Spencers today told me they could not bring me underwired bras to try on because I told them I was pregnant!

I've been in full on maternity clothes since 8 weeks pg - being the 3rd I have been shockingly showing for ages now - however, the good thing at 15 weeks is that the large wobbly bump I had is now filling with hard stuff and indeed, even watching BLOB wriggle across my tummy today. Have been feeling the movements since 12 weeks but can now see them too.

Sorry - that was a bit of a random comment after bras!

FlightofFancy · 15/07/2009 15:35

Thanks for the warning on M&S! Will just not mention pregnant when I go in there on Saturday, am just on the plump side! Have had a look at non underwire, but am on the small side (even now!) so just look completely flat-chested without (and of course the concept of non underwide and padded is utterly beyond them).
Have read a couple of places that suggest that as long as underwire fits properly and is comfy, it shouldn't be a problem.

liny · 15/07/2009 15:36

yep, did the bra thing at M&S yesterday and they are not sexy... haven't shown them to DH yet ;-)
found one that looks ok but the other is not as nice, BUT they are very comfortable and it is nice to fit in a bra again, went up 2 cups..

Now trying to find some shorts or trousers for the summer as I'm giving up on my normal clothes... any recommendations before I look on the net?

Suffered yesterday with migraine, slightly better today, any advice?

lynneevans51 · 15/07/2009 15:43

Liny - I've been having migraine's every week since wk 7 - urrgggh - my sympathies. Paracetemol is all - and its just not good enough - of course doesn't even touch the head. I have now started having Indian head massage every couple of weeks and that seems to be helping - together with applying some Vics vapour rub on chest to clear a bit of congestion I had with hayfever - still getting heavy heads - but not migraine strength as regular.

Recommendations for clothes - Dorothy Perkins and Mamas & Papas!! Found some great clothes in both of them - indeed, so great I ended up spending about £500.... DH not so happy - but hey, it's his fault anyway!!

liny · 15/07/2009 16:05

thanks lynneevans51, I was just on the website of dorothy perkins- found some short so will probably buy! saw a nice skirt and mamas and papas so I might pay them a visit next week- I was hoping to find a nice "normal" summer dress but I don't look good in all the ones I try..;-)))
Never mind, I might have to stick to pregnancy clothes...

misschatterbox · 15/07/2009 16:07

Lynneevans - I've also had to move in to maternity clothes, also my 3rd, so bump is already obvious.
Next has some nice items and I got a lovely summer dress from H&M.
