Hi everyone - haven't posted for ages. V. v. busy at work trying to get through my 'to do' list and write all my handover notes (to someone I haven't even finished recruiting yet!) - only three weeks to go before mat leave! How long does everyone else have?

Had my first antenatal class last Thursday at the hospital. I'm so glad I went - the midwife was really informative and we got a tour of the birthing unit. I hadn't realised what a fab view we'd get of the Houses of Parliament from our room. I liked the tone of the class - basically the midwife said that they expected us all to have a natural birth and to be able to deliver without intervention or pain relief, but that plenty of help was available if things didn't work out like that and that we shouldn't worry. Felt very reassured. Going to my NCT class this Saturday (I'm an antenatal junkie!) so it will be interesting to compare.

Bit of a milestone yesterday - DH and I traded in our lovely car that we've had for 6 years and suited us perfectly as a couple, for a 'family car' - five doors, lots of boot space. Still doesn't really like feel the kind of car that we ought to own. Bit of a wrench really.

Need to get on with the hospital bag and the birth plan. 34 weeks on Wednesday......

Hi all

I have also been lurking but keeping up with all your news. Not much to report other than I felt that time was going slowly.I am very uncomfortable. My ps is terrible, I can only take little steps and I waddle everywhere. However I gave myself a big kick up the B U M as I have 6 weeks to go and can't give up now (not that I have any choice in the matter !!!) The weather up here has been poor so that doesn't help. However we have had some lovely times night away, friends 40th,children at a sleepover at my mums so I can't really complain. At least you don't get stretch marks 4th time round !!!!Oh and did I mention the piles

DH is laughing at me slightly as I never remember any of this and always only remember the good bits. You would think that I would of learned by now.Perhaps I should do a video diary just incase I ever get tempted again.Beware all of you nature is very clever !!!!

DS has started his lovely pre school and the girls go back to school on Thursady so 2 hours every afternoon to SLEEP

Friend had a little boy yesterday baby number 1 a quick delivery in the water. She found being stitched afterwards the worst bit.Thought the pool was fantastic though.Stayed in last night but was home today.I know one more person due to have baby any day then its my turn.yipee

We have got all the baby stuff we need now.The ensuite in the babies room is being re done next week. Then the babies room will be painted. The curtains are being made as we speak. So then we can get the cot in from the garage and bingo time to have a baby! Nothing like leaving it until the last min.

Keep well everyone and keep posting it is great to hear your news.

Just a quick question, is anyone taking raspberry leaf tea/tablets? I didn't last time but am thinking about it this time.

I just saw in 'pregnancy' a thread saying that you can take it from 34 weeks. Which i am now. But i was going to wait until 36/37 weeks to take the tablets.

ta!

KleineMaus · 25/08/2009 06:30

LittleMissBliss I'm on the raspberry leaf tea. Started last week (34 weeks). Advice seems to vary slightly on when exactly to start. Don't know whether it helps at all, but I had a good, relatively quick (and slightly early) labour last time and have tried to do the same things again this pregnancy just in case anything contributed hugely to the experience! Also, I really like the taste of the tea, which I know not everyone does.

rubyslippers · 25/08/2009 07:30

morning all

i am on raspberry leaf tea - one cup a day and will build up to 5 - 6 per day

not sure if it helped or not with DS but my active labour was 10 hours

LittleMissBliss · 25/08/2009 08:48

Thank you i have just ordered two boxes of 20 tea bags from e-bay.

Even though i was 8 days early with ds, I would really like a shorter easier and non-induced labour this time.

sammysam · 25/08/2009 08:55

Good news HappyT and Ruby! I had that worry with dd-turned out to be a false alarm though when I eventually had my scan!

Scan went very well yesterday-no sign of parvovirus, baby growing very well-senior sonogropher said 6lbs. Legs have suddenly grown to be more in preportion with the big head and tummy! So i've been discharged! My blood pressure was low 100/38 I think-which explains my dizzyness-sitting here feeling very dizzy! Not sure what I can do about it really and they weren't worried as they would have been if it were high. Anyone know what it means?

I'm hoping to get some stuff sorted at the weekend-have started to make a list of the stuff I need/want so that is a start! Can't believe how fast time is going now! Only a week or so til dd starts pre-school! End of an era!

I had RLT last tme but think I waited til 36wks-mind you that is only at the weekend so better get some!! Add that to my list! I too am going by the theory of do everything I did last time just in case!!

Feel very odd so should go!

HumphreysCorner · 25/08/2009 09:38

Good news sammysam and HT My transverse boy is also now head down so hope he stays there.

Treats-sorry you have had to trade your car, I just cannot part with mine so hoping all 3 will fit in the back or DD1 will have to sit in the boot.

35 weeks today and getting a tad fed up, permanently dizzy due to low BP and have a temper so the girls getting the brunt of it. You have all reminded me to pack some Tetley teabags to make a drink in the hospital as you get a kettle but often supplies are low. Haven't done a birth plan, do I need to? I am happy to go with the flow.

TMI but needing to poo loads and several times a day. Is this normal as usually only do this in the days leading up to labour.

Anyway, have a good day ladies.

HC

35 weeks!

lixanismapolium · 25/08/2009 11:07

Morning All - good to hear about some good news on the scans. Babies all moving into the right positions and getting ready to make an entrance!

Someone at work brought me in some raspberry leaf tea this morning, so I'm just having my first cup now. checked on the web first and most sites said 32 weeks (ish) is about the time to start. I'm 33+3, so have decided to go for it. Anything that gives us a chance of a shorter labour can't be a bad thing!

I've still got ages until I finish work, but am starting to work mainly from home from next week as the drive here and back is quite long and getting uncomfortable. I'm very lucky that I can work from home without really affecting my output. Also free to wear more comfortable clothes and have a nap at lunchtime if needed!!! Feeling quite jeaous of those of you having long mat leave. DH has been out of work since last November, so I have to get back quickly for financial reasons.

CalypsoFlame · 25/08/2009 13:23

Yay for sammysam, HT and Ruby, pleased all is falling well into place for your babies

I too had a big relief at the scan this morning; placenta is no longer in naughty low position, so all fine to go ahead with the homebirth {does the happy dance}. Also baby is all spot on for size for dates, but does have relatively long legs. Funny as we're all so dinky and petite in both our families, but expect they'll even out. If she's really the weight that they think, she's already bigger than DH was at term!

fidelma you have piles too? Never had them before - can they clear up before the birth or am I stuck with them?

treats I was at St Thomas' last Thursday, was at yoga though. Keep meaning to go on the tour of the HfH birthing centre, as obviously might have unplanned transfer. Everyone says its really nice, and glad to hear the staff philosophy lines up well with mine.

KleinMaus I looked up the dig report for Forteviot this season - how completely marvellous to have turned up all those gorgeous organic grave goods! Your DH must be chuffed to bits. Aside from a season in Flag Fen about 5 years back, and ad-hoc intertidal / foreshore work for Roman maritime activity in the Solent, I don't work in the UK, I'm usually in the Aegean Islands (better food, less mud ), but NEVER found anything remotely as lovely as Forteviot, but that's surface survey for you... (think goats, semi-arid desert and VERY thorny vegetation )

Trying to find a single iota of energy to write a paper for a conference I'm presenting at on Thursday, I'd give anything to win a lovely holiday away somewhere nice!

Treats · 25/08/2009 14:29

OMG CalypsoFlame - I was at the yoga class at St Thomas' as well!! I was the one who came in late, wearing navy tracksuit trousers. Which one were you?? (You don't have to tell me if you dont' want to 'reveal' yourself....) I guess if you have a conference on Thursday you won't be there this week, though. i'm really enjoying the classes and definitely find the stretches helpful. I feel so much more energised afterwards. I've paid for another three, and will have the last one the day before I go on mat leave.

There are two birthing units at St T's though. The HfH is for natural, uncomplicated births but for epidurals, interventions or any kind of surgery, you would be transferred to the Hospital Birth Unit. Depending on why you'd been transferred there, you might therefore end up in the Birth Unit. We didn't get to see that, but apparently the rooms are just the same. Howver, you don't get the views, visiting hours are more restricted and you get transferred to the Postnatal Ward rather than staying in your own room after the birth. Which hospital are you planning to give birth in?

Thanks for the RLT tips everyone. Might have to get some on the way home. I'm 34 weeks tomorrow so it sounds like a good time to start.

Wrote my birth plan last night. Kept telling DH that I needed to do it, and then putting it off, but he sat me down and made me do it. He found this for me, which was quite helpful. It's only a few bullet points on one side of A4, but it felt quite reassuring to have it all written down.

HC - it was my midwife who suggested I do it, and it was also said by the midwife at last week's antenatal class. TBH I can't imagine not having the opportunity to discuss all the issues verbally at the time of the delivery, so I don't think it's that important. I think for first time mums, it's a good way to make you think about your choices and the issues before you go in, but you'll be familiar with all this stuff already as it's your third, so you probably don't need one.

MrsKitty · 25/08/2009 15:55

Just had results of my GTT from last week...I have Gestational Diabetes Have had a quick look online and scared myself with all the indicators of likely C-Sections/Early inductions etc, and the higher risks of various complications but am at work so no time to look properly. Have to go to Diabetes Clinic on Thurs to find out implications/how to manage etc.

Grrr - I thought this pregnancy was going rather too smoothly

Off to collect DS from nursery shortly. Will try not to google too much in the meantime, and wait to find out what they say at clinic!

LittleMissBliss · 25/08/2009 16:22

MrsKitty-So sorry to hear that you have developed GD, I saw the midwife this moring and there was some glucose in my wee and she though that i may have it too, that they'll just keep an eye on me. I'm rather hoping the glucose was a result of my rather sweet tooth, but we'll see.

Please let me know how it goes at the diabetes clinic.

Today the midwife (more experienced than the one i've been seeing) didn't measure my tummy with a tape but with her hands and said that it all feels fine! Very prominent head on my pelvis. Also that the baby is lying in my back and that's why i keep having such bad lower back pain. I need to sit backwards on a kitchen chair leaning forward, to encourage the baby into a better position.

Come on weeks, 5 weeks and 6 days to go......not that i'm counting or anything!

lixanismapolium · 25/08/2009 19:15

I'm being watched for glucose too! Very high levels in 1st blood tests so they repeated them and the 2nd time I was fine. Then the next week, glucose in the urine sample again.

Have to go to the midwife every week now for it to be monitored ...

MeHimCatBlob · 25/08/2009 20:26

Hi all

Treats I totally sympathise about trading in your car - I had to trade in my beloved 2-seater sports car for a family friendly C-max - whilst the C-max is nice, its not a 2 seater convertable

can't believe the end is coming round so soon - my bump seems to be getting bigger by the day (my receptions only works 3 days a week and then when I see her on Mondays she comments on how much bigger its got since she last saw me!)

sorry to hear about the piles - they are pretty miserable but do go away - try anusol which is ok for pregnancy apparently - someone else suggested vasaline a while ago but havent tried it personally

do we have an up to date list of due dates etc - I'm only 31+2 so will be interested to see which of you ladies is first!

have a great week adn I'm very envious of those who have started Mat leave already - i have another 6 weeks to go (and an office move to sort in the meantime!)

lixanismapolium · 26/08/2009 07:53

Here's the link to the dates - I think it's the most recent we have ...

Link to Dates List

sammysam · 26/08/2009 08:28

Misskitty-I hope everything goes ok at the clinic and you have a smooth time.

HC-how are you coping with your low bp? I'm so so dizzy at the moment-i'm sat here needing to tidy the house but know if i get up it'll be a bad idea! I've never fainted in my life but yesterday felt so close. Nasty!

Seeing the mw next tues to discuss my homebirth-THEN I can finally start sorting things out

Feeling very excited now but also reality is setting in-was talking to a friend yesterday about when she had dd2 and god has she scared me!!! Although she has given me hope that the labour will be better!!

HC-i've needed te toilet loads too and I was thinking that that really only happened a few days before I had dd last time I really am fed up now but not enough to go into labour this early, miss out on my homebirth and whilst we have NOTHING ready at all-so hopefully it is just my body preparing VERY early and being far more organised than me! Or maybe it is trying to tell me to get my arse in gear!!!

smallone · 26/08/2009 09:21

Morning all!

Sorry to hear about the GD, I'm supposed to be tested for it but since then no-ones mentioned it. I don't know how gd affects you any differently from diabetes but a friend of mine with type 1 diabetes had a text book birth following an induction one week early. After 2 failed sweeps they put her on the drip and she gave birth 8hrs later with nothing put pethedine at the beginning and gas and air at the end. Hope that puts your mind at rest. The only thing was that the baby had a low blood sugar at birth so needed feeding immediately so was given formula, and then she didn't go back onto breastfeeding. I don't know if that is something that is affected by GD, but you could ask about expressing milk before the birth to give upon delivery if necessary.

The piles are most likely to come and go, but only truely clear up after the birth. I suggested vaseline, which is really good if they're not too bad. If they're really painful or uncomfortable then anusol is the way to go but it can be messy, which is why I prefer vaseline. Definitely use something before and after going to the loo, lots of fruit and water and you might want to get some toilet wipes which are kinder than loo roll!

smallone · 26/08/2009 09:22

blimey, don't know how I did that three times!

KleineMaus · 26/08/2009 09:47

Calypso yes DH was very excited. It's the only real 'treasure' he's ever had (normally he's more of a neolithic person, which doesn't turn up much in the way of goodies!) Aegean Islands sounds nice... Good luck with the conference paper.

for everyone with GD. I am now getting very excited about who's going to be first. Although I've technically got 5 weeks to go I keep thinking it could only be 3 (or 7!) DS was a week early. Having said that I'm still not finished a big work project and DH has suddenly decided that he needs to paint the living room today! Next week he's doing the kitchen... So plenty to be getting on with!

Treats · 26/08/2009 10:22

MHCB - we got a C-Max too! Obviously it's the thing to have...... Haven't driven it yet - apart from the test drive - but I think DH is actually looking forward to going to my parents for a change (we're there on Monday for a Bank Holiday barbecue) just so that he gets to give it a proper drive.

about the Gestational Diabetes. I don't know much about it, but at least you can prepare yourselves.

I'm 34 weeks today. Six weeks to go....... Or maybe eight. Or fewer.

DH and I are off to John Lewis tonight to FINALLY buy the pram. We've definitely decided on an iCandy Cherry, but the amount of faffing about he's done, I wouldn't be surprised if we ended up buying something different.......

idreamofbeanie · 26/08/2009 11:06

Hi all,

I have been reading through the thread but haven't had much to report. 35+3 today so I keep trying to remind myself the baby could arrive any time in the next 1.5-6.5 weeks but it still feels ages away. I think it's because I'm still working - I finish next Friday though, hooray!

My home birth is all agreed and the paperwork has been filled in (just a kind of checklist). Fingers crossed I go into labour sometime between 6th Sept and 11th October otherwise they will want me to be in hospital. I just need to order my pool now but made in water are out of stock of la bassine until the end of August. If it doesn't come into stock this week I might look at other suppliers. I need to go shopping this week for big nighties/PJs for labour and after birth, some lovely big pants and Bachs rescue remedy then I think I am about organised.

Does anyone know when we should buy nursing bras? I'm thinking about investing in a couple of nursing tops too - any recommendations for good shops? All my maternity wear from Mothercare looks worn and bobbled - I know I wear and wash the clothes a lot but I'm still not impressed with the quality.

Sorry for all the piles, spd, low bp etc . I had a crappy week last week with a bad cold, not sleeping, first niggles of spd and feeling generally run down and knackered but this week I feel really well again. Baby has settled in a comfy position and I have loads of energy plus spd isn't getting any worse so I could almost forget I'm pregnant until I get a big kick to remind me!

Right, must stop waffling and do some work.

littlepea72 · 26/08/2009 12:34

Hi everyone

Got back from holiday at home in NI, really didnt want to get back into the car for that long drive home, it took us 20 hours, im feeling it now & my body has crashed. Whole of the boot plus most of the back seat full of baby stuff, DS hadnt much room!

Seeing a new MW tomorrow, not nice having to change, plus im having a GD test done too. Does anyone know if i have to stop eating & drinking the night before i have it done? Only 6 weeks to go so i feel like im crawling home lol....Ive never been so tired in my life.

Had a scan almost 2 weeks ago, she looked like she was praying with both hands up, just as well her name is Faith! I asked about my bump as its small & people still dont notice it, but she said the baby is in the normal range....but above adv. so she thinks she is going to be a big baby. Will get checked again in a couple of weeks, then they will decide if they will do a c-section.

Cant believe some of you are still working! I would be under the table....well done!

Need to ask, as im going to BF this time, do i still need to buy bottles etc?? Can anyone tell me what i need?

Sammysam....when do you think you will be getting married?

Hope anyone else is ok, ive missed so much that im still trying to read & catch up! xx
