MIL yesterday, doh.. baby brain!

twinklegreen · 20/08/2009 15:25

Cazza If you have decided to breastfeed you don't need to take any milk with you, if for any reason you can't bf the hospital should provide 'emergency' formula milk.

smallone · 20/08/2009 20:18

Second the opinion of not taking any formula with you "in case" if you've decided to breastfeed. The hosp will give you formula if it is medically necessary but don't forget that although you are staying in hosp daddy is allowed to leave! I seemed to forget this last time so took masses of stuff which I won't be bothering with this time. I'll just leave a pile of stuff at home and then I can tell him to bring X/Y or Z in to me.

Can't remember how many nappies we got through, I think the average is 8 a day but convinced we didn't use that many while I was in hosp.

I'm taking two hats this time coz mw had to put on on dd as soon as she was born coz she was cold (CS) so it got all the birth gunk on it. I'm taking 2 each of hat, vest, sleep suits and one warm suit to come home in. and a blanket so that they recognise the smell when they come home. I didn't bother with bibs or cardigan last time and I didn't miss them.

CalypsoFlame · 20/08/2009 22:53

Thanks for all your get well wishes, back at work since Monday and feeling ok

smallone Happy belated birthday wishes!

treats what an awful end to what was lovely experience!

LittleMissBliss hope the anemia eases off, I know how awful it can be

baby hospital clothes Hmm have packed hospital bag now (34+1 today), but with the baby clothes, I've approached it the same way I do with packing a suitcase ("what if it does nothing but rain? What if its really cold? What if its roasting hot?") and so have 2 x vest and sleepsuits for almost every conceivable sized baby How can you pick an optimal size? I'm more or less expecting a c7lb baby but have teeny tiny premature outfits to 10lb size. PANIC. Oh and I'm planning a homebirth so this is all a bit hypothetical, but best be prepared etc...

Did go to Primark and bought new nighties to early labour in / post birth. At £1.80 each, that's clearly the product of hideous sweatshop exploitation cheaper than a charity shop or something off ebay! And 6 x knickers for £2; cheaper than paper knickers

Only 5 days to go until my 35 week scan to see if my placenta has moved out of the way. Hope its ok - I can buy my birthing pool then, yay!

sammysam · 21/08/2009 08:13

Morning!
Calypso-glad you are feeling better!
smallone-Happy belated birthday-hoe you had a lovely day!
LittleMiss-glad you managed to get some sleep and feel a bit better-I feel tired enough as it is-can't imagine what i'd feel like if I were anemic as well
Cazza-don't take any with you if you are going to b'feed-would make it much easier and more tempting to give up imho.

Still sorted nothing yet-and not too worried, but seeing as i'm 35wks on sunday I suppose I ought to start
Have my next scan on monday-prob my last scan all things being well!
I'm so uncomfortable at the moment-no position helps. Evenings are worse. Went out for the day on wednesday and i'm still feeling stiff and sore from all the walking.
Off to the air show on sunday-will have to minimise walking!
Going to see my homeopath tomorrow to stock up on pre/post birth stuff-see I am preparing !!!

Calypso-all being well with my scan on monday i'm going to order my birthing pool-which one are you going for?

Off swimming with dd and her friend and mine in a bit-the weightlessness should be lovely!

Have a lovely weekend y'all! Lets hope the weather stays ok

BellaCullen · 21/08/2009 16:32

Hi went to a nappucino workshop which was really good and got a trail pack with bucket for £25.Really liked the Totsbots Flexitot which has a bamboo lining thats lovely and soft.Has Flame giving us a discount offer yet for her website?

Cazza28 who told you to bring milk to hospital if youre going to breastfed?Definitely dont need to bring any if youre going to breastfeed, baby will get enough from you and if there are problems Dh can always get some but hopefully shouldnt be in hospital too long anyway.

CalypsoFlame I got pjs from primark too they`re so cheap and got some lovely fleece all in one pjs for the baby for £4 each.Had them with dd and found them better then sleeping bags as she hated them and also found that ds alsways had freezing arms in grobags.

Smallone hope you had a lovely relaxing birthday.

Sammysam good luck for scan on monday.

34weeks today, reminds me to make appointment with GP for my check up.Have all a good weekend xxx

smallone · 21/08/2009 17:29

Hi, thanks for birthday wishes!

Its bringing it all back to me looking at all these lists!

Calypso, I can guarantee that the hosp will be tropical, so it will definitely be hot! DD was a january baby and I've got pics of her 3 days old in hosp in just a short vest and nappy. Same goes for you, postbirth hormone shift is like menopause hot flushes, not time for thick jumpers.

I was expecting dd to be high 9lb so took 0-3month size, she was 8lb5oz so baby grows were big but i just rolled the sleeves up. Don't reckon you can go wrong with a newborn size, they cover quite a range. Fingers crossed for you that your placenta is behaving itself!

KleineMaus · 22/08/2009 17:41

Is anyone else for whom this isn't the first child wondering how on earth they're going to cope with another one? I have so little patience at the moment. I just lost the plot big time with ds (3). I was having a wee lie down on the sofa while he watched cbeebies as I'm knackered and first he jumped on me and then started hitting me on the head with something and I just totally snapped. Unfortunately, both of our tired and grumpy times coincide at the moment and DH has been away for three weeks (back tomorrow thankfully). I remember how emotional and hormonally challenged I felt after having ds and I'm really dreading it. I'm worried about how ds and my relationship is going to suffer when I'm sleep deprived and have zero tolerance for anything. What I also remember from last time is how little help dh was (we had a huge row after my six week check about my not taking the bin out when it would have meant me leaving ds on his own in the flat while I went two flights down to the bin shed!) Also this time dh is just about to start a really stressful term at work for which he's had no time to prepare as we've been doing lots of work in the house (which is till ongoing). Sorry for the long post - can you tell I'm a bit worried about this. I'm also trying to finish a big proofreading project which dh is getting really irritated about as it means I'm neglecting him! I've been getting up at six every morning for months now to do it before everyone else gets up. I'm very nearly finished though, but I am pretty much exhausted now. It's a good job I've been lucky and have had no health problems during this pregnancy. Anyway, apologies. Please reassure me that it will be ok when the baby comes...

BellaCullen · 22/08/2009 18:00

KleineMaus everything will be fine am constanly snapping at my two too, especially dd whos 3.Shes very challenging at moment and seems to have constant tantrums.
Our hormones definitely dont help.Is your ds going to nursery or preschool in sepetmber?Be easier when everythings back on in September and you can get a normal routine back.At least your DH will be back cant have been easy on your own for 3 weeks hope he will give you a break and takes ds out for a bit.
x

KleineMaus · 22/08/2009 18:32

Thanks Bella. It's comforting to know it's not just me. Thankfully, ds is already back at nursery (we're in Scotland), three mornings a week, which I imagine will be a godsend once no. 2 arrives.

LittleMissBliss · 22/08/2009 21:08

kleineMaus Ds 21 months, is more than challenging at times luckily this week he seems to have turned a corner after two weeks of being a pain in the backside. He's becoming very strong willed and tends to tantrum when things don't go exactly his way. Can be very draining. I am really worried that the poor lad will get quite upset when someone else is hogging all of Mommy's attention. He gets cross enough at the laptop, if i try and go on it during the day when he's not asleep or eating he will shut the screen! Think he may get frustrated when he can't do that with the baby!

On a plus note he has always been good at playing by himself, with cars and trains so he doesn't crave one on one attention all the time. We will be getting him a bigger train track from the baby and a wooden garage for his birthday (months after the baby arrives) so hopefully theses will keep him occupied. Along with a Peppa Pig DVD .

I'm just really hoping it will all fall into place. DS didn't sleep through until 8 months.....don't know who i'm kidding. Oh well noubt i can do about it now!

I think the worst thing will be the sleep deprivation. DP and i also had a fair few arguments in the early days, because in short i was a grumpy cow! lol.

theboob · 23/08/2009 09:46

morning all , my toddler seems to have changed into a challenge, maybe they can sense what is about to happen went to the hospital on friday but as consultant was not there I have to go back in 2 weeks to get my date for induction, she said she could feel the pressure from the fluid in my womb and more or less convinced me I would go into labour soon , so now with my stupid impatient brain every twinge is getting me excited, 35 weeks tomorrow and i'm really fed up now and just want it to be over , i really need to get a grip
hope everybody is ok and has had a good weekend

princessmel · 23/08/2009 10:53

Ooh Theboob that sounds exciting !! But...I wish they wouldn't tell you things like that, as now you will be on tenterhooks the whole time waiting for it to happen!!!

Kleinmaus it is such a challenge having a 3 yr old anyway, without being pregnant aswell. I do think the 3 yr old stage is harder than the so called terrible 2's...ds was very tantrummy then. (dd was actually fine at 2 and 3! but they are totally different children)
It must also be hard for you without dh for so long. Hopefully now he's home things will calm down a bit.

When I was pregnant with dd , ds used to have some mahoooosive strops and I just used to have to sit them out. Wherever we were. It is very draining though.

Today my mum and dad have taken the dc's out for the day. It is very good timing as dh has started on decorating their room, so now the house is totally turned upside down!! The dc's might sleep over there aswell, so we may get a nice evening to ourselves!! Curry I think...

My spd has started niggling again. I have an appointment with the physio booked but not for another few weeks.

Hope you're all ok.

OP posts:
KleineMaus · 23/08/2009 13:01

Princessmel I think you're right, 3 is harder than 2. There's a good thread going on in behaviour about coping with babie's and little ones where they are talking about 'threenagers' which seems quite an appropriate term. Hope you enjoy the relative peace without dcs. lol at curry - that's exactly what we always have as soon as dh and i have an evening to ourselves.

Poor ds has really suddenly developed a nasty slightly croupy sounding cough overnight. We didn't get much sleep. Now he's crashed out on the sofa. We're off to pick up Daddy soon though. Hurray! Of course he'll be tired and grumpy too given that he's just back from a knackering three week archaeological dig. Oh joy! And I know exactly what will be uppermost in his mind, having been away for three weeks and he'll be even more grumpy when I remind him that I'm an even more pregnant lady than when he went away and slightly worried about going into early labour! Still, will be great to have him back (I think ...)

CalypsoFlame · 23/08/2009 18:06

boob Thats very exciting! Fingers crossed for you going soon then

SammySam Good luck for your scan tomorrow too - is for the low lying placenta too? Hope you get a good outcome. regarding pool: had been planning on La Bassine madeinwater.co.uk/pool.html but my friend didn't have her home birth as she went over 42 weeks so has offered to give me her 'Birth pool in the Box' which I don't think are as well made nor as easy to empty, but it is free...

smallone thanks for the hot hospital tip. So I removed all longsleeved suits from my pile of hypothetical hospital baby clothes, but then wondered if it would be cold on the way home! Don't have a car so could be some waiting for a taxi somewhere! Meh - I think I'll just pack it all and hope I do get my homebirth

KleineMaus sorry to hear that its so hard with a 3 y.o. I often wonder how I would be coping if this wasn't my first one, pg really quite tough without the added stress of other small children. Hope DH is supportive and gives you a break. Oooh archaeological dig? I was an archaeologist in my former life, this was the first year in 11 years I haven't been out to the field and missed it LOADS. Where was he working?

Body has had a mini breakdown- post 2 week coughing hell with the asthma I've developed piles, how lovely! Must be coughing associated as I eat lots of fibre, exercise a lot and have never had constipation / straining but they sure are quite uncomfortable Also now have cracked heels too - didn't even know my heels COULD crack!
But had a nice time at my Yogic Birth Rehersal this morning, DH thought it was fun, not sure he took it very seriously though as he tickled / parped my boobs at every opportunity

Hope you all have a good week X

CalypsoFlame · 23/08/2009 18:23

part 2: I forgot to add that I had a lot of BH yesterday; around 5-6 an hour for quite some time (about 15-20 secs each time).

Fortunately that's eased off today, only had a few (mostly when I sneeze).

I'm 34+4 today, is that quite common?

theboob · 23/08/2009 18:41

calypsoflame i have been the same with BH , last night i woke up having them , but mine seem to get worse when my boobs leak which is alot at the moment

HumphreysCorner · 23/08/2009 20:10

Hi ladies, am back from my short caravan trip and it was lovely. Did walk the wrong waqqy round the woods so did nearly 7 miles instead of 3. The next day I had mini contractions.

theboob-sounds like your baby will be here sooner rather than later.

Still no leaking boobs here. My friend told me they no longer provide formula in the hospital as they want you to BF.

Anyway, feeling v. tired and sooooo hot so will catch up later.

HC

34+5

LittleMissBliss · 23/08/2009 22:57

HC I'm sure the hospital would offer formula if for some reason a mother planning to breastfeed was unable to. Hospitals will always have a supply of formula. Did your friend mean they will not supply it to mums who have already planed to formula feed from the start? I still wouldn't take any in if you are planning to breastfeed.

Calypsoflame Sorry to hear you have piles hope they heal soon. I have had cracked heels too for the first time in my life! I bought a ped egg thing last week. Really does the trick. Bit gross thinking that it collects all your dead skin cell fillings, then you have to empty it yuck! But worth it for lovely feet!

The cots down from the attic- but not up yet. Still haven't thought about my hospital bag. I think I'll wait until I'm 35 weeks. I know two friends who have gone into labour at 35+ weeks. Really hoping that doesn't happen. Especially as dp will be on holiday as of this Thursday coming for a week!

34 weeks tomorrow!

I have my 34 week check on Tuesday i wonder if I'll still be measuring a week small or if I've caught up yet. I had allot of 'not long now!' comments at work over the weekend. Also 'You look like there's another one in there!' bloody cheers, its like saying 'you look too fat to be only carrying one child, there must be two!'.

I have brought myself lots of autumn/winter clothes in a size 10 today as an incentive to not take up my breastfeeding cake habit! I am determined not to loose most of the weight in the first couple of weeks like i did last time to only pile it all back on again through gorging! Think I'm going to get a soup book and start making some soups and stuff to freeze soon. I'm determined to get the freezer stocked with healthy nutritional food.

Well better hit the sack. Nite all. x

rubyslippers · 24/08/2009 08:22

Morning all

Am 34 weeks today (eek)

3 more weeks at work ...

I am also worrying about coping with my 3.3 year old and a newborn. DS1 was very difficult - refluxy and ill for the first few months. I have a sling and hope that it won't be as bad as i fear

i am deffo having a longer mat leave this time around - in retrospect 6 months was just too short so am aiming for 7 - 8 months this time

hospital bag is packed, cot is being sorted on the BH weekend and i am now worried about the birth

tore with DS1 and am fearful of it happening again so am going to speak to the MW today and see what she says

will pop back later - hope everyone has good days

sammysam · 24/08/2009 09:44

Morning everyone!

Slightly pssed off-wrote KM a really long message yesterday about 3yr olds, my dd (3) and my thoughts/feelings etc and then MM was offline for half an hour and it didn't post The basic gist was that dd is very similar but i'm hoping that it will all be ok as otherwise no one would have more than one child. That it might be hard to begin with but I think you cope better with the lack of sleep with a NB than when you are pg, especially if you are breastfeeding due to the sleep inducing hormones released. And just that i'm going to really try and remember how dd must be feeling and try and make time to spend one to one with her. Plus for us dd is starting preschool and so will have some fun time away from her (hopefully not) grumpy mummy and i'll have time away from her (this will be the first time she has done anything away from me) so i'll miss her and be able to cope more if she is difficult when she is back.........I HOPE!!!

Calypso-those are the 2 i'm looking at-i'm interested you say the LB is better made-that might have made my mind up
No my placenta is well and truely out the way-this is my 4wkly scan related to the parvovirus-mainly a growth scan but to check the heart etc. This will prob be the last one as i'm now 35+1 and in 4wks i'd be 39!! I say should but at the last scan my fluid levels had dropped quite a bit and they'll want to keep an eye if they have lowered again. Fingers corssed they are ok now!

I'm so knackered at the moment-have been overoing it a bit. Spent all day at the airfestival yesterday-ended up a bit pink but had a lovely day.
Busy week this week at well so doubt i'll get any baby realated stuff sorted til next week now-my mum scared me when she said that my younger sister was born at 35wks-that would not be good the baby would have to wear dd's clothes at this rate!!!!

KleineMaus · 24/08/2009 12:31

Sammy sorry I missed the full version, thanks for posting.

Calypso - re. archaeology, dh was digging in Forteviot, Perthshire. In fact they had quite an exciting find of a bronze age burial with grave goods, twas in the papers and everything. I've probably just outed myself as archaeology seems to be a pretty small world. Also re. BH, I recently had really regular ones too, every four minutes for a couple of hours. I'm pretty sure that my bump had changed shape after that. I think the baby was moving down and the midwife did say last week that it is lying pretty low now.

hackneybird · 24/08/2009 14:00

Hello everyone,

Haven't been on for ages as have not had an news to report but I lurk regularly so I know what is going on in everyone's lives.

I really don't envy you all looking after small children AND being pregnant. I find the prospect of just one daunting enough.

We have been buying a few bits to prepare, we have been given a huge amount of stuff by SIL (who has 4 kids) so haven't had to spend too much.

Am really tired today as went to The Oval to see The Ashes yesterday - we were so lucky that it was the winning day! A once in a lifetime experience.

xx

HappyTangerine · 24/08/2009 18:07

Hi , hope everyone is well.

Just a quick message to let update you on some good news-after another very active weekend when the baby was moving about all over the place(and it was flaming AGONY) he is no longer breech! Midwife today confirmed he is now definately head down again and head is at the brim. She said he is unlikely to turn again now so fingers crossed no breech clinic for me- I was half dreading it once I realised what was involved.Dated at 35 weeks today.

Feeling a lot more organised now- have pram/travel system(Mamas & Papas Ultima,)moses basket, vests, nappies, sleepssuits, scratch mits, hats. Also got most of what I need for hospital bag (inc the snacks)and will pack it tomorrow. Off to Ikea and Mohtercare at the weekend to get the rest of the bits we need and then next week its decorating the bedroom and nursery.

I'm still having trouble sleeping at night, regularly awake until 3-4am. However, the iron is kicking in and I'm starting to feel more energetic. For anyone suffering side effects of the iron tablets, definately do what I did and ask for the oral solution instead. They gave me liquid ferrous sulphte brand name Galfer-tastes ok and seems to do the trick.

rubyslippers · 24/08/2009 18:35

great news Happytangerine

my breech/transverse baby is now firmly head down so very relieved

all went well at my check - trace protein in urine but nothing to worry about

still trying to get my birth plan signed off
