Hopefully this has worked?

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
brightonbaby · 05/05/2009 23:17

Argh, don't say double decker...now I have to have one! I find at the moment that I'm heavily influenced by any mention of any yummy foods. I just can't rest until I have it.

Just wanted to pop in and say hello to you all. So happy about all the great scan news. Congrats to all. Huge relief all round. Mine is next Monday and I'm drumming my fingers impatiently.

turtle23 · 06/05/2009 07:48

PLEEEEEASE don't have thyme tea in pregnancy!!! It can cause you to miscarry as it is a uterine stimulant. Will be back later, just wanted to put my tuppence in just in case....

ursigurke · 06/05/2009 08:01

wow, I am always impressed how many herbs and spices could be bad for us. How about sage tea? I think that is very common to use for throat infections. I guess it's antibacterial. But I think it is more for gargeling not for drinking.
And good morning to everybody.

BeckyBendyLegs · 06/05/2009 08:04

hobnob with DS2 I felt much sicker in the evening (just when I was cooking everyone's tea). This time round it was definitely morning and also evening. I think it must be blood sugar related.

Ideeanna congrats on your gymnastic baby scan!

I'm going to send lots of good luck vibes to you both Katster and Belgianbun on Friday.

Anyone being scanned today or tomorrow?

My clothes are starting to get a bit tight...it can't just be all those pear drops, lumps of cheese, bananas, prawn cocktail Pringles, fruit gums, muller yogurts etc I've been eating. It must be a baby growing!

katster37 · 06/05/2009 08:17

IDeanna did they not give you your statistical risk for downs? She was probably having difficulty getting the measurement because the baby was busy doing handstands and wouldn't keep still!
Usigurke will google sage tea and see if that's allowed. Thanks for the advice turtle - don't want any uterine contractions for a good few months!
Throat and ears still pretty bad, am glad I'm not at work, although am now sat here worrying about going back and what my boss will say. Sympathy is not her strong point and I was literally awake all night worrying about how mean she will be to me. Especially because I have scan and midwife appt on Friday, so will be off on Friday too. DH just says not too worry about her and that we have more important things to think about, which makes me even more scared of something being wrong with the baby - it feels like it is the answer to all my problems and so too much hope is pinned onto it, IYSWIM? Sorry, bit emotional at the minute!
BeckyBL my trousers are definitely tight too. I got weighed this morning and have put on 2lbs. This is about right, isn't it, for 11+4? I feel like it's a lot more because stomach is definitely protruding.

turtle23 · 06/05/2009 08:38

Sage tea even worse! Seriously, I use both of these things to help labour along at the end of pregnancy. It's very easy to think that all natural things must be ok but it's always best to check before having herbal teas/medications. Sorry for shouting, everyone, just don't want anybody to have a bad experience!

turtle23 · 06/05/2009 08:43

Avoid the following:

Herbs that stimulate uterine contractions: birthwort, blue cohosh, cinchona, cotton root bark, ergot (as in commercial preparations for migraine headaches), goldenseal, gotu kola, Peruvian bark.

Herbs that stimulate menstrual flow: agave, angelica, bethroot, black cohosh, chicory, feverfew (in flower), hyssop, horehound, lovage, milk this-tie, mistletoe, motherwort, mugwort, nasturtium seed, osha, fresh parsley leaves (especially placed vaginally), pennyroyal, poke root, pulsatilla, rue, saffron, sumac berries, tansy, thuja (white cedar), watercress, wormwood, yarrow.

Herbs high in volatile oils (which can stimulate or irritate the uterus): eucalyptus, nutmeg, osha, yerba mansa, and the mint family members basil, catnip, lemon balm, marjoram, oregano, peppermint, pennyroyal, rosemary, true sage, and thyme. For the common culinary herbs, the concern lies with the use of high doses in women susceptible to miscarriage, not with using herbs to flavor food.

Plants high in alkaloids (which can also stimulate the uterus): barberry, blood root, broom, goldenseal, coffee, mandrake, tea.

Herbs that affect hormonal function: dong quai, hops, licorice, motherwort, wild yam.

Harsh herbal laxatives: aloe, cascara sagrada, purging buckthorn, rhubarb, senna, and yellow dock (in large amounts).

Strong diuretics: juniper berries, uvaursi (bearberry).

Ninjacat · 06/05/2009 09:04

Katster - I'm getting over flu which also caused ear and throat infection and sinusitis.
It's a real pain not being able to take anything (pharmasist wouldn't even give me olbas oil or vicks)
It's really important to keep your temperature down as that is the only real threat to your baby. I was allowed three doses of paracetamol a day to do that.
I did have antibiotics though.
The dr also recommended gargling with salt water.
I'm still feeling pretty rotten but can at least get myself out of bed.
Hope you feel better soon.

Laugs · 06/05/2009 09:23

Morning all. Congratulations on all of yesterday's scans! I'm so excited for everyone, especially the first time mums, as I remember how amazing it was seeing the litle baby in there for the first time, wriggling and waving and, if you're lucky, giving you the finger!

turtle it's also great to have a doula on board keeping us all straight!

I have hayfever at the moment, but I'm pretty sure there's nothing I can take for it, so just being a bit of a hermit instead.

I thought my MS had gone, but was very sick again last night. I can't believe how different it is this time around, but I'm nearly 12 weeks so should be over the worst of it.

Katster and Ninja sorry you're feeling so awful. Katster, I really wouldn't worry about your boss. She should be pleased you've stayed off rather than risk passing it on to others. By the way, you (I think it was you) mentioned Cheltenham a few hundred pages ago - I am from there too! Living in the North East now though, so I'm a long way from home.

Tamlin · 06/05/2009 09:24

Turtle, that's a wonderfully comprehensive list, but I'll admit it made me giggle a little. I suppose I'll have to cease and desist from my daily habit of inserting fresh parsley leaves vaginally - woe is me...

Ninjacat · 06/05/2009 09:35

oh that's a shame I was hoping a bit of parsley would get rid of the smell of the garlic.

turtle23 · 06/05/2009 09:38
Smile
ursigurke · 06/05/2009 09:50

turtle - thanks for the list, I know that natural doesn't mean healthy, there are lots of poisons in nature. Actually I only know a very little part of all those words but as I know most words for the ingredients I use, I guess I'm fine. But I am still wondering if you should even avoid gargeling with tyme or sage tea as you don't swallow it?
Katster - I agree with Laugs. If you stay at home, you can't pass it on your colleagues or students. And I felt bad as well when I stayed at home for almost a week. But it is your right and if you need it you need it. I think our bodies are a bit vulnerable at the moment so it is really important to take care. Otherwise you will need to stay at home much longer in a couple of days.

katster37 · 06/05/2009 10:20

I love this thread - it's so nice to be able to chat with people who are going through the same thing
Laugs yes it was me who mentioned Cheltenham - well remembered! I really miss it - just organising a weekend there in September to see friends. Can't wait! Whereabouts are you in the north-east? I used to live in Yarm, when I was little.

scarlotti · 06/05/2009 10:52

Hi all

Just saying a quick hello, been away for a long weekend and have tried to catch up on all the news.

Congrats to all for the great scan news and to all those still feeling rough, hope it eases soon.

I'm sure I've felt the odd flutter of movement too but thought maybe I was imagining it.

hobnob still struggling to connect here too post m/c so don't be hard on yourself. Think it will just take us longer that's all.

katster37 · 06/05/2009 11:18

Scarlotti how exciting, if you're feeling movement! I think it must make it all feel so much more real, and constantly reassuring if you can actually feel him/her wriggling around. Does anyone remember when you start to feel movement if it's your first?
Oh gawwwd, I am so worried about Friday's scan.... It just seems like such an impossibility that anyone ever has a healthy baby sometimes...A friend just emailed me to say she had an ectopic on Thurs, she was 8 weeks - I daren't tell her I am pregnant. Seem to be hearing of loads of scary things at the minute - sorry, probably shouldn't be mentioning it all on here!

BeckyBendyLegs · 06/05/2009 11:31

I first felt movement of DS1 in the middle of a very important meeting and I was about 18 weeks I think and I went 'ooooh' much to everyone's surprise. I really can't remember with DS2, bless him! This time? I keep thinking I can feel something but it could just be wind!

Must dash: got to pick up DS2 from nursery!

sleeplessinthecity · 06/05/2009 11:33

Great news about the scans folks..really pleased.. all the hand stands etc..wow..

I can't believe so many herbs do so much!! I can barely go into the kitchen let alone the herb cupboard!....

Made asparagus soup yest..hope thats ok

hobnob i have spd at the mo so can't walk for very long and carrying DD is a bit painful too going up and down the stairs. I did no exercise last time apart from Yoga. I plan to do a bit more this time..swimming maybe with my knees locked as Tamlin suggested.
Be very careful getting in and out of the bath too!

scarlotti · 06/05/2009 11:36

kaster am not convinced it's movement as it might just be wind! they say you can feel it earlier with subsequent pg's but I think that's probably more that you recognise the feeling. I think it was around 18/19 weeks with dd and then around 16 weeks with ds. This seems very early though and it's very infrequent so either it is wind or baby swims up nearer my tummy every now and then!

BeckyBendyLegs · 06/05/2009 12:10

I recommend aquanatal for exercise a bit later on: I did this with both DS1 and DS2 and found it absolutely great and really helped with relaxation. I hope to find aquanatal classes near here in a few months.

LissyGlitter · 06/05/2009 12:17

The surestart woman has just been round (I get a lot of home visits from various agencies due to a history of quite severe mental illness) and must have thought I was a complete slob! I'd forgotten she was coming and was in my dressing gown, with hair that hasn't been washed for a week, legs that haven't been shaved for about six months (seriously, they are so hairy that when i showed my male friends they were shocked that I had more hair than them!), with DD in just a grubby vest and nappy (she took her own PJs off this morning and wouldn't put them back on, and there's no way I'd dress her till after breakfast as I'd be changing her again straight after!) with toys scattered all about the house, my ann summers order on the settee waiting to be sorted and DD dumped in font of the spare laptop watching iplayer! I wouldn't even have usually been up yet, it's only because I had a really lazy day yesterday and haven't been sick for a week that DP insisted it was his turn for a lie in!

southernbelle77 · 06/05/2009 14:06

Oh lizzyglitter I wouldn't worry! you're post did make me giggle though - isn't that how we all feel and wish we were doing at the moment! I'm sure the surestart woman understands the tiredness and exhaustion this stage of pregnancy brings!!

I didn't know anything about the herbs and things so that was interesting reading, thanks!

I'm having a pants day! I'm am sooooooooo tired! Why, since I've turned 12 weeks has the tiredness and sickness not just instantly disappeared!! lol, if only that was the case. I am finding it hard to get myself to
do anything productive today! And I have the most god awful pain in my leg. It's like cramp so most likely something lacking in my diet, but it's not helping with me trying to stand up and get motivated!! Hey hey eh

BeckyBendyLegs · 06/05/2009 14:13

I am sitting here seriously struggling to stay awake... I can't though as have work to do I have yawned about eight times in the last ten seconds YAWN.

southernbelle bananas. They are supposed to be good for leg cramp.

brightonbaby · 06/05/2009 14:20

I'm struggling today too :-( Feel really overwhelmed with everything. We're getting married in three weeks and have yet to tell my parents about the pg....this weekend is the plan...then the cats out of the bag.

They're so happy about the wedding, I don't want them to feel the pg is the reason we're getting married and take away from that (we've been happily together for 12 years already) and have just put the wedding forward 5 months.

OH is not being very supportive. He's struggling as much as me and we're both hurling our bad moods around the flat today.

I'm off swimming now to get some of that energy out.

In spite of all the worries I feel at the moment, this thread has been really great. My only outlet, since no-one yet knows about the pg in rl. So, thanks ladies, for being here.

katster37 · 06/05/2009 14:25

Yep, also pretty tired today too. My midwife said 14 - 16 weeks is when people often start feeling much better so maybe we just have to wait a couple more weeks?

BrightonBaby poor you, and I'm sure your parents are not going to think that is why you are getting married - they will be so excited, something else for them to look forward to after the wedding! I'm sure you'll feel better once it's out in the open. Have you had your scan yet? I think worries can surface when you're waiting for that - I know I feel really anxious today, and my scan is in 2 days time. My heart is racing constantly and I am panicking about what the adrenaline must be doing to the baby... Dh even told me off and said the baby will come out only understanding anxious emotions
southernbelle leg thing sounds awful. It's not the same but I have found I keep getting twitchy legs when I am lying down, typically in the middle of the night or when I'm trying to get to sleep. Really annoying.
Need to ring work and say I'll be in tomorrow. I just know what everyone's like whenever anyone's off. It gets written on a big board 'XXX off sick' so everyone knows, and starts speculating about why they're off and being bitchy. I hate it. Summer holidays HURRY UP!!
