Hopefully this has worked?

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
katster37 · 20/05/2009 20:39

Aaaaw, what are they doing, BeckyBL? How old are they again? I keep forgetting.

Teachers - only 2 days 'til half term

pavlovthesmugcat · 20/05/2009 21:25

Katster I am *-RH too. Its nothing to worry about. This is how it works.

Firstly, we are rare. Less that 15% of the population are -RH, which is fab. It means we have no antibodies. Which makes us bloody great for giving blood coincidently as anyone can use our blood (esp if you are O, like I am). And I like being rare!

Secondly. If your DH is -RH, then it means nothing, as your baby will be -RH. That is fine.

So - if your DH is +RH, that means your baby could be +RH too. This means your body will have a 'foreign body' in it. It is fine for this pregnancy as your body has not had a chance to build immunity against these antibodies. In a future pregnancy, should your placenta leak and blood crosses into your blood stream it could treat that baby as a foriegn body and attempt to get rid of it.

What does it mean - if your baby is +rh, you could build antibodies to fight this in future pregnancies.

What will happen - you will have an anti-D injection at around 26 weeks (?) which will stop you building antibodies. when baby is born, they will test baby's blood to find out if -RH or +RH. If +RH, you have another Anti-D injection and all should be fine at next baby stage (you will have another anti-d I beleive anyway then). If baby is -RH, then you need to do nothing at all.

Next baby, start all over again. That is the theory behind it all (maybe some errors feel free to correct if I got it wrong). What it actually means for you, is that you get an injection in your arm which stings a bit. Thats it. In reality, medical advancement is such that is not a serious risk to mother and future baby as long as the injection is done with this baby.

Does that all make sense? Have I just confused you? Scared you (got, hope not, its really nothing to worry about).

BeckyBendyLegs · 20/05/2009 21:30

My DSs are 5 and 3. They just wanted to go to bed with precious objects and today for DS1 that is a Shreddies box and for DS2 a cardboard tube. Who needs expensive plastic toys?

I'm watching The Apprentice and I want to shout at them 'don't bother with the rocking horse'!!!!!! But do they listen?

pavlovthesmugcat · 20/05/2009 21:31

Laugs - honey is fine in pregnancy, babies under 1 year old cannot eat honey (not sure about eating it if breastfeeding) as bees can carry botulism. As an adult, this is no big deal, but babies do not have the immunity to protect against it and it can be fatal. After 1 they are able to fight it as an adult can and it is safe to eat.

scarlotti - pineapple is great in pregnancy - for those struggling to keep food down - it is high in water, and apparantly has an enzyme in it which helps absorb protein so good if you eat it with another meal, esp if not able to eat much (so I was told by some-one on my hyperemesis thread). YEY on feeling baby kick! Its great when you exactly what it feels like isn't it?

God I am a wise old sage today aren't I? Hope I didn't come across to 'know it all' as I know bugger all really!

pavlovthesmugcat · 20/05/2009 21:36

Katster - it means we have no Rhesus D antigens, rather than antibodies in general. Its just the Rhesus D thats a problem, hence the anti-d injection. Just in case I confused you with all the waffle about antibodies.

pavlovthesmugcat · 20/05/2009 21:43

You know I think I might not have explained the whole rhesus positive/negative thingy well, so I found www.babycentre.co.uk/pregnancy/complications/whatisrhesusstatus/this to explain it better than me, I am clearly no teacher!

hobnob57 · 20/05/2009 22:14

Scarlotti I'm a teacher so 4 days is pretty workable for me (though work expands to fill the spare time as ever). Yes, we're in Kintore, but Westhill is so handy for town. Hope you know all about the crazy traffic up here though - Westhill's not as close as it looks on the map at rush hour! That's a really exciting decision though.

CONGRATS on scans

Ideanna it sounds like your posture is changing and you're storing tension in your neck. Keep stretching it regularly during the day (tilt to each side, then chin to chest). If you're feeling flush, an osteopath will sort it in a second!

katster no such thing as May half term up here - enjoy yours! But we finish at the end of June instead

Also trying to motivate myself at work, especially when I know that what I don't get organised now for ML will have to be done in the holidays due to silly appointment of my cover from start of next term . But finding it SOOOO hard to get out of bed these days!!!

I'm really having to rest and concentrate to feel my flutters and wishing for kicks just so I get more frequent reassurance. I'll hear the heartbeat next Tue when I get my bloods done and planning on recording it on my phone - a luxury I didn't have last time!

claired21 · 20/05/2009 23:24

Oh Skorpion don't mention pushing - the thought makes me feel sick with panic! (vomiting, panicky smiley)

Ninjacat · 20/05/2009 23:25

Have just returned from pub quiz - we came third and won a bottle of wine

Thank you for your lovely words about my scan.

Sleep Tight,

Ninja

Tamlin · 21/05/2009 08:08

Don't mention wretched half-term. How I loathe it... They always cancel all of DS's toddler groups and play groups for half-term which means I wind up running around like a maniac trying to get the Most Energetic Tot in the Universe exhausted enough to sleep at night. It's much nicer to go to the village hall, chuck DS in the door, and let OTHER toddlers chase him around for two hours.

I felt my first proper kick last night, which was hugely reassuring.

skorpion · 21/05/2009 09:17

Good morning!

claire - apologies, didn't mean to make you feel sick. Last thing anybody needs, I know

I am so at feeling babies' movements. I can't wait for mine. Only 12+4 so still a long time to wait I suppose.

I hope you have a good day.

Cies · 21/05/2009 09:29

So nice to hear about positive scans and kicks and babies moving.

I'm off to the midwife in an hour, and hope to hear the baby's heartbeat. I'm slightly worried as I've actually lost weight these last 3 months, and I haven't been sick, and have been able to eat normally. I hope it's just due to the fact that I've started taking levo thyroxine for my underactive thyroid... fingers crossed all's ok.

scarlotti · 21/05/2009 09:52

Cies don't worry about the weight loss, I lost weight with my last two pg's and wasn't on any medication or being sick. Your metabolism speeds up to cope with the demands of making another human being
Sadly this time I've put on weight so I am going to end up huge with so much to lose

Hobnob we're going to come up at the end of August to check out Westhill but it's looking promising and exciting. I want to re-train to be a teacher at some point but sadly we'll have to have me work a few more years in IT and save as our mortgage is too high to take a year out for the PGC(D)E.
Roads - I live in one of the busiest bits of the south east outside of London so I doubt it's any worse!

Have my 16 week appointment this afternoon and really hope I get to hear the heartbeat. Would be lovely to have the reassurance.

Hope everyone is feeling well today

Laugs · 21/05/2009 10:12

Morning! Thanks pavlov for the honey info. I knew that about babies but wasn't sure why a GP had said it about pregnancy.

Has anyone else thought they've felt movement but can't feel it any more? I was sure I felt it 2 weekends ago until last week, but haven't for about a week now. Luckily I had my scan since the last time I felt it, so I know it was still moving. I must have just got it wrong, but the feeling is so distinctive I was sure I recognised it. Hmm.

BeckyBendyLegs · 21/05/2009 10:21

Morning all! I'm going to get out all my maternity clothes in a mo. and sort though them. Been meaning to do it for ages but been too busy with work. Would like some new bits too money permitting plus of course a dress for this wedding!

I've got my 16 week check / triple bloods next week.

sleeplessinthecity · 21/05/2009 10:55

Am jealous of all you flutter bellies! haven't felt a thing..but have got all my mat clothes out..have a real beer belly!

Am so pleased to hear about all the scans and ninjacat your consultant sounds like a dream..

katster i thought i was having a boy the first time and when they told me it was a girl I was stunned and maybe a little disappointed to but was pleased she was healthy..I couldn't be happier. She is the love of my life. You will fall in love with your son and being a big bro is what I've always wanted...

becky your bubbas sound ever so cute!

DD (after singing her praises) is giving me a hard time again. Constantly whinging ..are any of your toddlers playing up? Do you think they sense a new arrival??

Anyone know where to buy good mat nighties?? am falling out of mine in the boob dep. Online preferably, Geneva has no nice stores.

pedalmonster · 21/05/2009 11:29

sleepless I just got a couple of nighties from Mothercare website.

scarlotti · 21/05/2009 11:44

sleepless get ones with buttons down the front if you can, or ones that open so that when/if you bf then you can still use them then.

Laugs the early movements I felt seemed to disappear for days. I think that as they're so small (the babies) they swim up and down and when they're too far down we can't feel them. Just a theory!

lemontop · 21/05/2009 11:53

I'm also jealous of all those feeling kicks and movement. I keep thinking I can feel something but more often than not it's wind . I'm 16 weeks today and got my midwife appointment next Weds. Is it common practice to listen to the heartbeat at midwife apointment? (crosses fingers and toes!)

Other than that it's like I'm in a nothings going on at the moment stage. It's all go with my wedding organisation though which is keeping me busy.

I sadly don't get half term either but we finish a bit earlier than schools. I've checked out maternity pay and it looks I'll have enough holidays to take to just come back for a month after summer and finish 6 weeks before my due date. Although the work is stressful it's more the travelling that's knackering me. The hills in Crystal Palace are wearing me out a bit more these days!

WizzyWoo · 21/05/2009 12:42

Hi Everyone

My goodness, it's been soooooo long since I had a chance to join in the conversation, so I've completely lost track. Just read the last few days' posts to refresh myself and hope I'm not too far out of the loop to rejoin??

I'm 15 weeks now and had a small bleed last Wednesday. I'm rhesus negative like Pavlov and Katster and as this is my 2nd baby, I rang the hospital in a panic. Nurse told me that since their pregnancy assessment unit had shut for the evening, just come to A&E if it got worse. It stopped after about 40 minutes of me refusing to move from the loo so I just thought that since I had a scan and consultant appointment booked for two days later, I'd just mention it then.

When I had the scan, they noticed pooled blood and a midwife came to speak to me. She was horrified with the advice I'd been given and immediately took blood to sort out an anti-D injection. As a needle phobic, you can imagine this didn't go down well... For info for anyone with Rhesus Negative status - apparently you need to have an anti-D injection within 72 hours of a bleed to try to stop any further problems.

After a tense week of obsessively wiping every time I go to the toilet just in case there's another bleed (sorry, TMI ) I'm starting to relax a bit now.

I felt a tiny flutter yesterday so I was over the moon and am taking it to be a sign that the little chap/chappess is still doing fine. After seeing it scratch it's head at the scan, I would be heartbroken if anything happened now...

As for the MS, I couldn't keep anything down from about 8 weeks (probably why I stopped posting for a while). I was put on medication to stop the sickness, which worked pretty much all the time although it didn't stop me retching. Then it started to cause havoc with my blood pressure so I came off it 2 weeks ago and touch wood, the MS seems to have passed. Now I've got awful pelvic pain to contend with and am off to physio in a minute (handily just round the corner from my office). I'm starting to suspect this could be a boy, as my bump looks completely different from my little girl (it's sprouting out everywhere rather than nicely at the front) and I didn't have the pelvic pain the first time round... 5 weeks to go then hopefully I'll know!

Anyway, that's more than enough from me to put everyone to sleep. I really hope everyone's doing ok and I'm sending hugs to anyone still struggling with MS or any other annoying pregnancy symptoms.

Bye for now xx

WizzyWoo · 21/05/2009 12:47

Oh no! I knew I'd forgotten something... I've updated the list, as my due date has gone back a day. Also, I know just how you feel Sleepless. My little girl fluctuates from a little angel like last night to being the devil child from hell. This morning she refused to get into the car seat for me to take her to nursey, bit herself and me, scratched my face and kicked me several times. It took me 25 minutes to get her strapped in, despite going back to the house to cool her off... Maybe you're right about sensing some competition coming along - she spent a lot of time touching my bump last night and saying "baby" Hmmm....

Hi WizzyWoo sorry to hear about your experience with bleeding and suffering with MS Good that you are feeling a bit better now. I've been quite lucky on the MS front. I haven't actually thrown up at all.

I can't wait for half term. I'm just so tired of walking to school and back three times a day. It renders me house bound!

beepbeep · 21/05/2009 14:04

Afternoon all!

Also having nightmare with toddlers, my DD (2yrs) came into the kitchen yesterday to show me her 'lipstick', it was all over her face, but i could actually work out what it actually was until i realised she had managed to reach a pot of nail varnish off the top of the tv - panic or what?!?! i managed to get it off with nail varnish remover in end and then washed her little face about 100 times to make sure she didn't react, poor little mite! Lesson learned - don't leave ANYTHING out, even if you think they can't reach it! I found that DD acted a biit strangley through my preganancy with DS (she was 10m when fell pregnant) and it actually put quite a strain on my relationship with her, I think she just got fed up that i couldn't do the stuff with her that she wanted (couldn't bend down much, play on floor for long, carry her etc), but as soon as DS was born it was completely different and we were great again. Bizarre how they pick up on things isn't it?

Ideanna - I suffer from extremely bad headaches when i'm pregnant, apparently it's not uncommon, they include stiff neck etc and i end end up in bed with a hot water bottle on my head, must be a hormone thing.

I have eaten pineapple and honey through my pregnancies (though i know there are some thing you should stay away from until the end - like raspberry leaf tea due to being labour inducing) but i believe you have to eat loads of pineapple for it to have that affect. (Though i did try it near the end of last 2 pregnancies and after eating about 2 pineapples a day for few days both babies were born soon after - could be a coincidence mind, but both early)
