hobnob57 · 21/05/2009 17:33

Scarlotti good news! Although I was hearing today that there are no childminders in Westhill if you intend to rely one one... Or a career change to becoming one perhaps?

Laugs I felt movement after my scan for a few days and then nothing for well over a week after that. Even now it's just vague almost period-like movements I'm feeling. Until just now in fact! As i was typing I felt definite rummaging going on

So glad it's Thursday and I don't have to think about work again for a few days (apart from those dratted reports again). Just wish it would stop pouring.....

Good to hear about substantial bumps - mine has definitely Arrived. It makes a mockery of this secrecy business I'm meant to be having about not telling pupils until after the interviews in JUNE .

claired21 · 21/05/2009 17:51

Hi pootle

My mum told me recently that drinking fresh orange juice with a meal increases the iron your body absorbs. Worth a try!

pavlovthesmugcat · 21/05/2009 18:33

Agree with Claire pootle orange juice with a meal. Also - avoid caffeine (if not already) for an hour before and an hour after meals and this slows down the body absorbing iron. Eat lots of dark green vegetables and fruit (spinach, courgettes, peas, cabbage, green pepper) as they are higher in iron and if possible combine these with food high in vit c as vit c helps body absorb the iron (and calcium too I think).

Ninjacat · 21/05/2009 18:54

Is any one else doing really daft things at the moment?

Yesterday I managed to get dp to come clothes shopping (he has a better eye than me). Went in to the changing room and nothing fitted so didn't show him any and came out with pile of clothes which I handed back.
Looked around the waiting area but no dp! Looked in the shop, no dp!
"Did I take too long?" I thought "has he huffed off back to the car?" (this behavior would be out of character I have to point out)
I walked the entire Mall and went back to the car, no dp.
Hmmm, I walk back to the shop. Put my head in the changing room, no dp.
I head back to the car, no dp.
I go to info and explain I'm probably mad but that I lost my dp in the changing rooms at M&S, they do a call out but only in the main areas not shops, no dp.
I head back to M&S, I approach the fitting room staff "This sounds mad" I say "but I left my dp here whilst I tried on clothes, perhaps he has had an asthma attack, have you done any first aid today?" "No first aid" they say "what does he look like?"
So I begin to describe him, "large, very short hair, pink stripy shirt" at this point the attendant looks over my shoulder, I follow her gaze only for it to be met by DP! "is that your dp" she says and sure enough there he is sitting reading Top Gear Magazine. I have been looking for him for 45mins! He went no where!! I would have walked passed him to get out!!!

I think I may not be safe to be left alone.

ursigurke · 21/05/2009 19:15

lol, I thought I was a bit confused lately but that's quite an impressive story, [Ninjacat], good that you found him eventually.
Was he worried about you too? Or was the Top Gear Magazine just so interesting that he didn't realise how much time he had been waiting for you?
Maybe you should always carry a picture of him, just to make sure you don't forget how he looks like

Tomorrow, I'll have my appointment with the midwife to get my notes (what does that mean?) and to discuss the results of my bloodtest (taken 5 weeks ago). As I feel very well and managed to put on 2kg after having lost 3 in the first trimester, I am very optimistic that everything will be fine. I'm curious if she does any kind of examination too (touching my belly, listening to heartbeat,...) or if they continue this strange "theoretical" care.

katster37 · 21/05/2009 19:22

Welcome trikken! Is it your first pregnancy?

Thank you, pavlov (and liking the new name!) for the Rh- info - actually, you really put my mind at rest. My mum totally freaked out when I told her and was like 'oh, well you'll only be able to have one child then' and I thought she must be over-reacting a bit! Also, as DH's mum is also Rh- there's quite a good chance DH is too. He's arranged to give blood on Tuesday where they will be able to tell him his blood group.

Sleepless - sorry your daughter is being difficult. How old is she? (sorry, I have forgotten)

Nighties - lots of cheapo ones in Primark? Also the ones with buttons on the front. HAs someone already said this? I am not sure.

Tamlin - sorry for mentioning half term

Wizzywoo sorry to hear about your bleed - how nerve-wracking. There are a million reasons for bleeding though, as I'm sure you know, so fingers crossed you'll be absolutely fine.

Also jealous of movement-feelers.... I want to feel it NOW!! I am so big - had to stand up all the way home on the Tube, and was so annoyed - am sure I look pregnant and not just like I've scoffed too many pies!!

Trikken · 21/05/2009 19:30

Hi katster its my 2nd, but think im more nervous with this one than I was with my first. Probably cos a good friend lost her baby at 33 weeks quite recently, id never known anyone to lose a baby that late in pregnancy. Got 16 week midwife appt tomorrow so hopefully will ease my mind a bit.

ursigurke · 21/05/2009 19:31

katster try to get that "baby on board" badge! (I think you get it on the ticket desk) You might feel a bit stupid with it but it really works (well, not always). I think, sometimes people are not sure if a woman is pregnant or not so to avoid to offend her, they do not offer their seat (had this feeling already myself). With the badge it is pretty clear and also that you want a seat... well, and I would feel a bit less stupid knowing I'm not the only one wearing it

katster37 · 21/05/2009 19:46

usigurke - good plan!! Yes, you're right, I've sometimes not stood up in case someone is not actually pregnant!

Trikken oh my god, your poor friend, that is so awful. I thought most babies would survive if they arrived at 33 weeks? How terrible for her. A colleague of mine also lost a baby a couple of weeks ago. She had to deliver at 27 weeks due to severe pre-eclampsia, but a week later, the poor little thing died. So, so scary. I am currently relieved to be out of the first trimester, but you're right - there are so many other things that can happen, and I suppose the later on you get, the worse it can be, somehow. I hope your friend is getting lots of support.

beepbeep · 21/05/2009 19:57

evening all.

Just read the thing about orange jiuce and iron - beware - don't drink too much, i used to drink gallons of the stuff and it can really affect your blood sugar, they thought i had gest. diabetes but as soon as i stopped drinking it my levels went back to normal! Just thought i'd pass that on (I used to drink it with lemonade as so refreshing - mmmm!)

ursigurke · 21/05/2009 20:03

My gynaecologist in Austria told me that iron is better absorbed if consumed with vitamin C. It doesn't have to be orange juice, just go for something else to avoid too much sugar.

BeckyBendyLegs · 21/05/2009 20:15

Hello! Ninjacat your story is sooo funny. I can imagine doing that myself.

Katster and Trikken feel so sad about your sad baby stories. Katster is this the same colleague you mentioned a while ago? I am so sorry that this happened to her. So very sad.

My latest craving: rhubarb. What wonderful stuff! Totally underrated.

DH was in London today so is late. If he thinks I am waiting for him to eat my tea then well he hasn't met many hungry pregnant women in his time! He is still on a train somewhere as I type.

katster37 · 21/05/2009 20:24

Hi BeckyBL, yes it is the same colleague. Really sad. Baby had an operation to remove part of her bowels (because she had a massive infection there), and died a few hours after. So so sad. Colleague is a mess, naturally. So scary.

Lemontop you must be really near me as we are just round the corner from Gypsy Hill... Hmm!!

sleeplessinthecity · 22/05/2009 09:05

Wizzy and beepbeep thanks for your comments. DD is 17 months and behaving like a monster some days. Even hitting me which is so unlike her. I just feel that she is frustrated but I do try and do as much as I can. (almost fainted in the park yest its 27 deg here!) I even carry her when I shouldn't. I sat crying yesterday because sometimes you just take it personally, when you know that she has no idea what she's doing. I thought it was teething or just a phase..don't know. How can they possibly know a baby is on the way?

The cavalry is on the way. My mum arrives for 2 weeks to help on monday. DH is in New York for work .

Thanks for the nightie tips, the mothercare website is pretty good.

Pregaday available from your gp is good for low iron which I had with DD.

I have abstained so long from nocturnal activities that DH and i joke about it. Now I'm too embarrassed to initiate and he's finds it too awkward too..what a mess. Ridiculous!!! I dream about it with DH all the time but don't really have the energy..pathetic isn't it..

skorpion · 22/05/2009 09:11

sleepless - sorry to hear about your struggling. I hope DD's behaviour will improve soon, having your mum with you should bring relief. I wish I had some advice for you, but am completely green when it comes to children... Feel a steep learning curve approaching.

I know what you mean about lack of nooky. We haven't dome it for weeks! Have to say that at night I'm completely wiped, ready to sleep at 9.30. I'm thinking Saturday morning is the pouncing time

lemontop · 22/05/2009 09:11

katster yes I'm in Gipsy hill. I'm sure we discussed this in a previous incarnation of this thread. Are you in Streatham? I think there are a few of us in fairly close distance.

Hooray for long weekend coming up.

skorpion · 22/05/2009 09:57

Can I tell a joke? Heard it on Terry Wogan's this morning and it made me cry. You have to imagine him saying it though in his lovely Irish voice - I'm crap with accents.

Guy is driving around a huge car park trying to find a space, with no luck. He stops, winds his window down and says to the sky: 'Dear God, if you find me a space right now I promise to attend mass every day and give up whiskey. At this precise moment a space appears. To which the guy says - again to the skies: 'Erm, don't bother. Found one!'

I hope you all have a lovely day.

Tamlin · 22/05/2009 10:41

Sleepless, DS is nineteen months, and also driving me potty. We're averaging two or three moments of adorableness every day to hours and hours of being trying and difficult, and quite frankly, the ratio is getting me down. We were supposed to go to a birthday party this morning, but idiot me forgot to get the carseat out of DH's car, so now we're trapped at home with DS roaring around because he thought he was seeing all his little friends today. Waaaah.

I don't know if he senses something's up - I think it's just the age. He wants to use the oven and drive the car and hug growling dogs, and I won't let him do anything he really really really wants to do because I am so horrible.

beepbeep · 22/05/2009 10:57

I do feel for youy all with the horrible toddlers, we def went through it last time with DD, could well be an age thing, but am sure they also sense there is something else on your mind, she fine (ish!) now at 2.5, we have bad days but she's not as unpretictable as when she was about a year ago. Luckily DS is only 10m so seems totally oblivious to it all!

Tamlin - poor you stuck in the house, they go stir crazy don't they?! DD is curently in front of Cbeebies (bad mother?!) and DS is down for his morning nap, we're off to Blenheim Palace this afternoon to make good use of their playground! Meeting DD's little friend there so hopefully she'll run off some energy.

when I was pregnant with DD someone I knew was due same time and the baby's heart just stopped beating at 38 weeks, so scary. I don't know what the reasons were but i do know she smoked and drank (quite a lot, not just odd glass!) throughout her pregnancy, so whether this contributed I don't know. But horrible all the same.

pedalmonster · 22/05/2009 12:01

Thats just it - from the moment of conception you just never stop worrying. The stress of potentially being made redundant has really affected me - i am struggling to sleep and MS is now back in full force... just as it was starting to improve too! I am going to GP next week to discuss how to handle this as it is meant to continue for another month! I worry that the baby will be affected by the stress. maybe will just take some time off and go away to the lakes or something... get my mind off it....
Sorry about the me me me post
Ds is 2 and he is being very challenging - but i dont know if it is about the new baby or if this just happens developmentally. he has been picking up on my stress this week and having terrible sleep too - have just had him in the big bed with DH and me - which of course adds to the torture, being kicked in the head tends to keep you awake.
Ninja I laughed out loud at your story - definitely the type of thing I would do.
WHen I was 8 mo preg with DS1 I managed to get myself stuck in the car park, wedged between car door and wall. I was there for about 20 min trying to wriggle free, eventually managed to release the seat recline lever wiht my foot and bend backwards into the car!
