Thanks for the positive messages. WIll be hanging around the acas and other sites for a while now! x

Ninjacat · 18/05/2009 11:15

Laugs - DS used to get really bad croup which caused severe breathing difficulties. It seemed to stop about age 5 but he's now prone to bronchitis and tends to a get a bout each year. He has asthma inhalers but doesn't need them too much if he's fit and well so think his bronchi are just his week spot.
My Grandmother said all her boys (5) had to go in oxygen tents for croup so maybe it's an inherited thing.

Were they able to give you any answers as to what might be causing your DDs breathing problems? I do hope she's on the mend.

Just got back from hospital with DS. Luckily it isn't his dominant hand but having only one thumb is taking its toll. Still, he has a nice red cast which he can show off in school. Giving him the day off today as he's in a lot of pain but think he will go back tomorrow.

This whole having kids thing can be very stressful.

Hi everyone. Not sure if i have posted in the right area? I am 12+4 with my 3rd (unplanned!) due on the 26th nov. Had scan last thus which gave me due date as am very vague on LMP! I have a ds age nearly 9 and a dd age 4.5. I have been sufferering from hyperemesis since 6wks, unfortunately made worse by the smell of DH!! I look forward to chatting with you all x

pedalmonster · 18/05/2009 12:13

Hi Scratchet welcome and congratulations - plenty of Morning Sickness (MS) going on here on this board, you are definitely on the right site! One of us will add you in to the list when it gets next updated.

BeckyBendyLegs · 18/05/2009 12:13

Hello Scratchet you are in the right place! Sorry to hear you've had hyperemesis and your DH's smells make you worse (I also don't like the smell of my DH, esp when he is clean!!!).

Remember to add yourself to this list (I'm updating my EDD):

Just updating mine too.

Hi scratchet! I am due the same day as you

Ninjacat It is hard, isn't it? I'm sure DS will gets lots of attention at school and that will make him feel special. It must be horrible to see him in pain though.
The doctor we saw on Wednesday said 'it's looking increasinlgy likely she has asthma'. Whether the specialist we're going back to next week agrees is another matter. What are the symptoms of croup BTW?

Ninjacat · 18/05/2009 13:43

Welcome scratchet Laugs Croup is the inflamation of the airways leading to the lungs. It usually causes a nasty cough that sounds like a bark but with DS it causes a Stridor (sounds like a loud wheeze) and it becomes difficult for him to breathing. Most children don't get it that bad though.

DS is very sensitive to cigarette smoke and that has sparked attacks in the past. Controversial as it sounds it makes such a huge difference to us now the smoking ban is here because we know we can eat out etc without any fear. (crap for the pub trade though I know)

My DP has really bad asthma too so I'm quite worried about going through any of that again with the new baby.

Is asthma inherited?

BeckyBendyLegs · 18/05/2009 14:32

It can be inherited as far as I understand it. My DH and his mum have asthma and allergies. DS1 has an inhaler but has only needed it when he has a chest infection or bad cold. We also spent a night in A&E a year ago when DS1 had croup. He had that horrible barking cough which at the time we didn't know what it was but a nebuliser in the ambulance sorted him out. DH and DS1 also both have eczema. DS1's eczema though, interestingly, has almost completely gone since we moved from Oxfordshire to Shropshire. I have no idea why - the water? When we lived in Oxfordshire it was quite bad.

BeckyBendyLegs · 18/05/2009 14:33

Meant to add DS2 is like me: we could role in new cut grass and not even sniffle.

turtle23 · 18/05/2009 15:10

One more fab scan! Irritatingly they wouldn't acept the fact that I have a long cycle so am stuck with a due date three days too early. Grr. Ah well...baby swung round and presented sonographer with his bum so I feel we got our point across.

BTW...did you know that all maternity dresses at Isabella Oliver are 25% off until the end of May? Discount code DRESSES.

Ninjacat · 18/05/2009 15:25

My DS just asked me why Social Workers leave red rubber bands every where????

It took me ages to realise that at some point in his childhood he's misheard the word Postal Worker for Social Worker. Bless.

I love the idea of Social Workers leaving a trail of red rubber bands - or is that red tape?

pedalmonster · 18/05/2009 15:39

LOL how astute of your DS!

Laugs · 18/05/2009 15:50

Thanks for the info about croup. I'm pretty sure it wasn't that.

Asthma can be inherited. If your DH has it, it's more likely DS would get it. And a reaction to cigarette smoke sounds like it could be asthma. Things that trigger mine are: animal hairs - esp horse hair, but also cat and dog hair (in that order); damp weather; certain crops (haven't worked out which ones); scented washing powder; scented candles, incense etc; probably house dust, but that's hard to eliminate. becky it's quite likely your DS would be more allergic to different places. When I was 7 we moved to USA for 3 years and I didn't have asthma/ excema once. The air seemed so much clearer. When we came home I had it really badly for ages. Even now when I go back to Cheltenham (where I'm from) it is worse. Must be all those darn country folk and their horse-riding ways.

Tamlin · 18/05/2009 18:04

DH has asthma, and sure enough, the doc thinks that DS has it too. He has eczema as well, poor kid. I have no idea why I bothered bfing for so long.

Does anyone know if IO sizes small or large..? Any idea? I tend to hover between a 12 or 14 depending on the shop (10 at Mamas and Papas with their insane vanity sizing).

ursigurke · 18/05/2009 18:53

Went for a walk today and as I "suddenly" found myself in a Monsoon shop, I tried on a couple of dresses. I really liked the purple one I had already linked here and it would definitely have room enough. It might even look better with a nice baby belly. And they had a couple of other ones in different colours who could look good on pregnant women. But I guess I have to wait another two months to see how the rest of my body is changing.
And now this information with the 25% discount, very tempting (turtle, I'm not sure if I should thank you or not)...
If I was working in an office, I would definitely buy that IO dress. But I can only wear things at work that can get dirty.
Tamlin, I've heard that the sizing is rather large. And that chart they show on the homepage is very strange. I'm sure that I always had to buy a size bigger in France than normal European size, on the homepage it is the opposite. Should I trust the European or the French size? And I'm still not sure about my British size. I have a dress in 8, which is still a bit too large and one in 10 which should definitely not be smaller. That's why I do not want to shop cloths in the internet.

About the asthma: I think it can be inherited but doesn't have to be. And it can almost disappear (although a doctor told me that you have it for a lifetime). But in my case, it definitely got much much better (I never had it very strongly though). My brothers really suffered when they were children and I think both of them now rarely have any attacks.
It is important to learn how to deal with it as half of it happens in your brain. It gets much worse if you panic (well, at least in my case).
And btw, you seem to have a lot less acarians (or mites?) here in the UK than we have. Even in B&B's with thousands of cushions, curtains and carpets I do not have big breathing problems. It's just wonderful

pinkfizzle · 18/05/2009 18:56

tamlin I have found the IO sizing quite big, my size 14 seemed big and and I am big but I got wrap around work dresses so it is a bit hard to judge....

pedalmonster this link might be useful:

www.fawcettsociety.org.uk/documents/redundancyfeb09.doc.pdf

welcome scatchet. sorry to here that you are suffering.

Thanks for the discount tip turtle and congrats on the scan!

Tamlin · 18/05/2009 18:57

I think you get sensitised to the pollen and mites of your own particular region (although some countries seem worse than others - NZ is a shocker for hayfever and asthma, and when we lived there, my mother and sister suffered a lot more than they do in the UK).

southernbelle77 · 18/05/2009 19:44

Congratulations on the positive scans

I'm very jealous about you all having exciting reasons to buy all those pretty dresses! I don't think I would ever really wear one so would be silly me getting one really, but they are sooooo nice!!

I'm pretty sure I really have felt the baby move It's only when I'm lying down really still relaxing, but yesterday afternoon (when I was lying in bed listening to dh deal with dd downstairs ) I really felt it a few times!

Laugs · 18/05/2009 20:18

How exciting southernbelle! Just goes to show we should be handing over to our DHs more and spending time bonding with our babies!

I am also very jealous of the Isabella Oliver dresses, which I have been trying to avoid looking at as I knew they'd be pricey, but now have succumbed and am green with envy.

Tamlin I also breastfed until 19 months in the hope that DD wouldn't get my asthma. Doesn't look like it's worked! Although the whole time I was breastfeeding she never got anything. Maybe I'll have to start tandem feeding when the baby comes along...

raggie · 18/05/2009 20:39

Hello everyone

Not managed to make it on here for a few days but have (fairly) good scan news to report! DH and I saw a pumping wee heartbeat last Thursday and size is spot on average for number of weeks (12 today I'm told, so waaaay behind most of you!)

Unfortunately my weirdo anatomy - apparently I have a 'reverse tilting' uterus which means it is quite far from the surface of my belly - made it hard to see head/much really so we have to go back this Friday when hopefully bubbs will be a bit bigger and easier to spot! Fingers crossed - our ultrasound pic this time was just a black and grey swirl really, boo!

Congrats on everyone else's great scan news, esp laugs you were same day as us I think?

Started properly telling people now which is making it all very much more real .

raggie · 18/05/2009 20:43

One more thing - do you know which is a more accurate due date? From LMP or from scan size dating? Since my scan was so vague, think will stick to LMP EDD which means staying with 28 Nov - else I might be bumped off the thread, sob!

Ninjacat · 18/05/2009 20:57

Raggie Don't leave us. There are October dates on the thread so there can be December too!

Does a b'wards facing uterus mean you will have a smaller bump?

hobnob57 · 18/05/2009 22:05

at grace's size 18! I've a picture of me at a hen night in August while pg with DD (she was due Nov 21st) in my size 10 Laura Ashley dress. It's bias cut, so nice and roomy for a bump.

Thinking of you pedalmonster. Fingers crossed it all works out in the end.

Hungry again (I think). Still struggling to think of something I want to eat. Croissants would be nice, but none in our house! Thinking this one must be a boy - I'd have been guzzling fruit with DD but although I still like it, I don't fancy it.

Anyone had a risk assessment at work done yet? I got my form today and it all seemed a bit trivial, like 'are your colleagues supportive of the pregnancy?'.

ursigurke · 19/05/2009 07:27

Good morning everyone! Woke up before 5am, seems to be the usual time for me now. I could fall asleep again around 7 which is not good if I have to work in the morning, like today.
hobnob - what's a risk assessment? As I am the first pregnant employee of our business my boss doesn't seem to know a lot about the laws. And as I only moved to the UK less than 2 years ago, I even know less. Where can I get all the information about maternity leave and your rights at work? He is a nice guy but I guess, it's better if I check myself, he is just not very... down to earth. (And can definitely not focus on anything)
