pinkfizzle- I keep wanting a manicure but then getting scared as the only place that does my nails properly does gels and acrilycs too aand it STINKS of chemicals. Keep thinking that if I were to get there at 9 it wouldn't smell yet, but haven't made it yet!! Wishing I could dye my hair as it's awful too.
Hope everyone is feeling ok today.

BeckyBendyLegs · 21/04/2009 08:16

Morning all!

Katster I totally understand your worries about your cat. Our eldest cat didn't talk to me for six months after DS1 was born, she was well put off. She stopped sleeping on our bed as DS1 was in our room and would give me these 'what have you done to my life?' looks. Every time he cried she scarpered like a hurricane out of the catflap. She is such a fair weather cat. Now she is very fond of the DSs but it took her a while. She just couldn't understand what this creature was and why it made so much noise! And when he began to move and grab at her tail...well! She nearly packed her bags at that point.

I need a hair cut never mind nails doing. I am ashamed to say it's been about 14 months since I last had a proper hair cut but DS2 starts nursery tomorrow and we live nearly opposite a hairdressers so I might just walk and say 'how about it guys? fancy a challenge?'

Tabbykat · 21/04/2009 08:54

Morning all! Hope everyone's managing to keep some food down and get some sleep. MS is getting better here, although if I get too tired it flares up - easier said than done as can't sleep very well at the mo, what with all the weeing!

Turtle and BBL, I also look a copmplete state, hair not cut for months, spots!! eek, hideous. Am going to dye hair in this pg though - didn't last time and just felt such a skank. Have a wedding in three weeks and will have just told everyone (all being well) so would like to look not too hideous.

Great news for those who've had good scans - I'm 11+3 now, and have mine next tuesday. Can't wait! Well, off to enjoy the sunshine, hope everyione has a good day, x

Tamlin · 21/04/2009 09:11

Our cat still hates ds - everyone said merrily that she'd get used to him, but eighteen months later, she hasn't. Things got worse once he started crawling - she started weeing on all his clothes and in his cot, and refused to come out from under the bed as long as he was awake... We've got her on Feliway and some sort of kitty anti-anxiety medication via dropper now (can't remember the name) - it's ridiculous, but it's the only thing that seems to calm her down.

Feel a bit guilty about it, actually. We've talked about trying to find her a nice older childless couple to live with, because she's going to be REALLY unamused when #2 shows up...

Laugs · 21/04/2009 09:32

Thanks Fruitpastels, that is good news!

I must admit I've always been pretty rubbish at personal grooming. DH cuts my hair (not with any skill, he just gets as close as possible to a straight line!). I am feeling in serious need of pampering though. I am thiking of spending a chunk of my Health in Materity Grant on a lovely mum-to-be massage. The rest will probably go into our joint account, so I guess it's sort of going on fruit and veg. Has anyone else got plans for theirs?

scarlotti · 21/04/2009 09:36

Have been failing miserably in the personal grooming dept, although I seem to have now turned a corner and actually want to sort myself out! Dyeing your hair is fine turtle I did it through my last pg's and went and had my hair cut and coloured last Saturday. Have booked in to have a leg wax tomorrow - am looking forward to the look on the beautician's face though when she sees my gorilla legs!!
Just haven't felt like keeping myself looking good whilst I felt so awful, but do feel as though it's all easing up now.

tamlin your poor cat, but also poor you with her weeing all over the clothes and cot. I'd say the suggestion to get her rehomed might be a good one, albeit hard for you. I think it would be tough to have to cope with all that extra washing and distress when you've 2 lo's there. Some cats just prefer to be king (or queen) pin. We gave out cat to my dd's Nan as he wasn't happy with kiddies running around. He's never been happier there, they spoil him rotten and he's lord of the manor. Was too far down the pecking order in our house for his liking!

turtle23 · 21/04/2009 10:54

The hair dyeing thing is more to do with the smell. Can't hack it.
I'm spending my £190 on a doula. Trainees are only £150 which leaves me £40 to spend on treats.

Fruitpastels · 21/04/2009 11:09

Welcome skorpion You could add yourself to the list when your EDD is confimed.

DS is back to pre-school today. It's been such a long couple of weeks having him home.

Since the MS has lifted I feel like I want to pamper myself and feel human again! I need to get a haircut badly. I had to cancel my last appt as I was too sick to attend.

I'm having issues tring to get comfortable in bed of a night - can't believe I feel like this already! My natural sleeping position is front or back. I'm trying so hard to sleep on my left side but I hate it. I woke up last night with a pain in my left shoulder and it hurts this morning. DH is ordering a maternity pillow today for me. I hope it arrives quick smart!! I never had one in my last pg.

Laugs · 21/04/2009 11:27

turtle23 that sounds like a great idea. I've just looked one up ad there is a local lady who charges £150 too.

Has anyone used a doula before?

Then again I'm also quite tempted by her postnatal service which is £10 an hour - cleaning the house, cooking and looking after older children.

Laugs · 21/04/2009 11:36

By the way, pinkfizzle sorry to hear about your awful sickness last night. Ihope your meeting was ok and you managed to get tomorrow off, sounds like you'll need it.

turtle23 · 21/04/2009 12:03

Laugs- Haven't really used a doula before, but I AM one. Can promise you it is worth the money. Whereabouts are you? (Will see if there is more than one trainee about...)

pedalmonster · 21/04/2009 12:29

Oh wow - WISH I had had a doula for DS1 - my husband was pathetic - there was some football on and he was not much help with timing the contractions and rubbing my back. After i had specifically issued him with instructions that "when I get tired, don't let them give me pethidine, just tell me I can do it and I'm doing a great job"... what actually happed was after 100000 hours of labour (baby was posterior) and I was still only 5 cm, and had threatened the MW with acutal bodily harm, he ASKED her if there was some pethidine that I could have to calm me down. B**rd. Had almost forgotton about that. Can't believe I let him get me pregnant again!!!!

pedalmonster · 21/04/2009 12:30

Luckily I'm not bitter.

Tamlin · 21/04/2009 12:32

I'm planning on using a doula too - I did the postcode search on doula.org.uk, and it came up with a woman who lives in my village and seems really nice from her website. Am putting off calling her until after the nuchal this weekend, but I really hope she's available.

It's awful to say this, but I had such a bad experience of a chronically under-staffed ward with ds that I really want a doula so that while dh is off desperately chasing down elusive and grumpy midwives, there's somebody still staying in the room with me. Got left alone ALL THE TIME with ds, including post-haemorrhage when it really wasn't safe, and it was horrible.

scarlotti · 21/04/2009 12:39

Excuse my ignorance, but what exactly is a doula for? Are they medically trained at all? turtle maybe you can explain to me? haven't come across them before mn. Do they charge per hour or per labour?!
Hadn't realised that people have them for hospital births as well, presumed it was for home births.
My last labour was at the hospital and they have a policy that the midwife stays with you all through. Don't know if that is affected by staffing levels or number of labouring mums - guess it must be as there's only a finite resource.

Laugs · 21/04/2009 12:44

Hmm well there are none in my area (North East) on doula.org.uk, but I've found one just through Google - but would this mean she is not properly registered or something?

sleeplessinthecity · 21/04/2009 12:52

Appalling!!! Tamlin that is bad...I would get a doula too if that happened to me.

Pinkf hope you're ok..what a night! MS really should be curable...for the sake of productivity in the economy the government should do more research or give us paid time off for trouble of creating more children - the future taxpayer!

I had a scan today and thought like in England I would be told my nuchal results..BUT NO!!! in Geneva they wait for blood results to come through so I have to wait till Monday to know the ratio..hmmmmm..I did however see the little bean jumping around merrily which filled me with lots of joy..It's finally sinking in!!!

Talking of personal grooming I thought about giving myself a hedge trim before seeing the gyno ( who tells me strip everytime!) but didn't have time this morning and was sure he wouldn't for a scan...BUT NO..he did.. so there I was like the amazon forest looking sheepish..he probed me with this camera, and i saw the most amazing thing ever..Ladies we are amazing and what we're carrying and nurturing are amazing too....ignore me I'm high on chocolate.

Ninjacat · 21/04/2009 13:32

Good afternoon,
I just thought I'd put in an update. Couldn't sleep last night with stomach pain, woke to find bleeding this morning. Phoned out of hours dr - was told it was a bad time for them and to call back in an hour. Called my surgery when it was open and was told to expect a call back. After an hour I gave in and called them, Dr did then call back after 5mins. Asked me "have you had a mc before?" then sent me (thankfully) straight to EPAC.
Any way scan was all fine but Midwife decided to do an internal and found something on my cervix which is causing the bleeding. Midwife called in dr because she said it was the biggest (sorry pg brain can't remember what it's called)she'd ever seen! Apparently I can have it removed by laser after the pg so might just have to get used to the bleeding until then.
The bean is now 9.4 and was bouncing about, DP and I couldn't help but giggle at it jumping about.
Hope every one else is well and enjoying the sun.

Laugs · 21/04/2009 13:39

Tamlin that is awful. Did you complain? Have to say I had a very good experience with my midwife, who was with me from about 3 hours in right until the end (I had someone else before that, so wasn't alone at all). She was lovely, but somehow high on all the drugs I got it into my head that DH was flirting with her! I remember feeling really put out that here I was in the throes of labour and he had the outright cheek to chat someone up in front of me. In fact DH is terrified of girls and with hindsight was just making awkward small talk while I lay there getting off my head on gas and air.

sleepless glad you enjoyed your scan. I can't wait until mine. I remember the feeling last time of real elation. We ARE amazing!

sleeplessinthecity · 21/04/2009 14:01

ninjacat what a mare..Will you get cramps/bleeding throughout the pg? Must have been traumatic..
Glad the bean was well tho

laugs that's an amusing labour story!

turtle23 · 21/04/2009 14:46

scarlotti- Don't worry...most people have never heard of doulas. here is an explanation for you.
If a Doula is not registered with Doula UK, she may well have done the same courses, etc. The only thing is that there is then no regulatory body to intervene if you have a complaint, etc. I know there aren't many in the north-east, but I do know that there have just been a whole new batch of trainees there! If you'd like me to have a look, CAT me or email me at info at sarahhopewell dot co dot uk.

BeckyBendyLegs · 21/04/2009 14:50

laugs that is funny!

Ninjacat that must have been a bit frightening. At least you know it isn't your bean making your bleed - glad the little one is ok.

My last labour was 2 hours so I might end up giving birth at home through no choice with no midwife (shudder at the thought)! Is there anyone contemplating a home birth? I know it is quite early to be thinking about this though. I'm not sure. I don't want to frighten the DSs seeing me give birth at home!

Fruitpastels · 21/04/2009 15:07

Bendylegs I was thinking about the home birth option when I was trying to get to sleep last night. I very much like the idea of it. I was 6hrs with DS and pretty straight forward labour. The midwife is all for me having this one at home. I'm a little worried about my DS (nearly 4 by then)being home and maybe frightening him or disturbing him (if it's night time). I also have no family to rely on as they all live too far away. Also best friend is only 2 wks behind me with her pg. I guess there is plenty of time to ponder on these things and come up with a solution.

turtle23 · 21/04/2009 15:07

I'm having a homebirth (fingers crossed)

Tamlin · 21/04/2009 15:18

I was half-thinking about homebirth just because I'd be guaranteed the sole attention of one midwife during the labour, two during the birth, and that beats NHS hospital ratios into a cocked hat. I'm just worried that we're half an hour away from the nearest hospital, and half an hour is a long, long time if something goes wrong - our ambulance response times are also quite bad around here.

I suppose I'm also a bit worried that I might plan for a homebirth and then ring up only to be told whoopsie, lots of women giving birth today, you've got to come to hospital after all.
