I'm sorry to hear your news Babylady

I bet that was a load off your mind Ladylush. I got told off by mw when I told her I'd been assigned to a child in a wheelchair...'you shouldn't be pushing that!' she exclaimed. I went and had a quiet chat with my line manager who felt extremely embarrassed and apologised profusely. I no longer push that wheelchair!! I do think one gets further if you stay calm!

Dp felt baby kick for the first time properly last night. Bless him, he's been hating the fact I can feel it and he can''t!

Has anyone tried cycling?? I'm dying to go for a bike ride but feel scared to!

ladylush · 30/04/2009 07:33

Ikwym Minshu - I had a boss like that too. I think this one is straight down the line though. I don't know him well yet but he seems a no nonsense straight up kind of person. Whereas the other colleague frequently ducks responsibility. Anyway, regardless of who has stretched the truth, I am pleased that I will just be helping with the documentation

Hope everyone has a good day. I've realised that one of the reasons why I'm not sleeping well is because I get very thirsty around bedtime so take up a large glass of water, finish it then wake up thirsty and needing the toilet. Funnily enough I don't suffer with a need to wee in first trimester, I get it in the subsequent trimesters. Strange. I wonder if it's because my uterus is retroverted.

ladylush · 30/04/2009 07:44

Blue - glad your manager realised the mw was talking sense. I think maybe sometimes people just don't think. I haven't tried cycling but am thinking of returning to the gym to go on the rowing machine and also using the pool. I stopped when I was having bleeding. I think the thing about cycling is that your centre of gravity changes in pregnancy so the risk is falling off - but that risk might apply later in pg.

Minshu - if your tummy is still doing the same thing, then it's your baby and not your pizza My lo is much more active in the evening but also seems to get active after each meal.

LJ - sorry you are having more bleeding Glad your mw was supportive. You must be so fed up with it now.

Is anyone worried about swine flu? I wasn't at all worried, but my mum rang me last night saying her work is having a conference about it today as the threat has been raised to level 5. There is no vaccination and treatment has never been tested on pregnant women or children. I looked at the department of health website but couldn't find anything about guidelines for pg women to minimise risk of transmission. Ditto nothing for health workers.

AprilMeadow · 30/04/2009 07:55

LadyLush, we are not worrying about the S/Flu and are travelling to Florida tomorrow morning. The only people that have been affected are those that have actually been to Mexico. Tests were carried out on the friends and family of those people in Glasgow and the tests came back negative. Personally i think the media have hyped it up too much.

Neddie · 30/04/2009 08:10

Hi all
Guess what? One of each! DP was so excited and called his mum straight away (aahh). All well and same size as singles with all heart chambers and systems working. Little boy kicked girl in the head on screen so that doesn't bode well for the future. The doctor said they were extremely active and no wonder I could feel them moving nearly all the time!
I also had a foal yesterday morning which was born healthy and was a bay colt.
Sorry about your bleeds LJ I'm sure it's nothing to worry about even if you can't help it- I hope it clears up soon.
Babylady I'm glad that you at least made it to the funeral and could say a proper goodbye to your Grandad.

mumtobe23 · 30/04/2009 08:57

Hey ladies!
Had my 20 week scan yesterday and we are haveing a ...........

GIRL!

I am over the moon as i secretly wanted a girl as i am a girly girl myself. We went out after and bought a few pink bits & a buggy!

Did or does anyone know about 28 week growth scan, apparently i have "plancentile lakes" and i will need a growth scan, any idea what this is, should i be worried?

Congrats on the one of each Neddie how lovely!

LizLemon · 30/04/2009 09:08

sorry about your Grandad babylady.

Huge congrats Neddie and mumtobe23 have to say I do feel envious of your twins a little Neddie - we were relieved that it was just one, but the idea of an instant family appeals

Glad you had words with the boss ladylush but it doesn't sound like the nicest working atmosphere - you and minshu both. Makes me glad I work for myself tbh, even if the pay isn't as good...

I don't like cycling blue so I haven't tried it, but I went to the gym last week and had a new program written for me. Not that I've been back and done it yet, but I'm feeling more breathless all the time so I better had. Is anyone else being a lazy arse or is it just me?

Still no word from my friends who went off to have their baby yesterday, which makes it over 24 hours already The idea of it makes me want to put my fingers in my ears and shout 'lalala I'm not going to have to do that'.

I've gone emoticon mad. Must be the lack of sleep.

pebblebeach · 30/04/2009 09:50

Lots of good scan news, congrats on the pink and blue bumps! I must confess I am a little nervous about mine (on Sat) now.... it is an "abnormality" scan after all, will be sooo relieved when it is over.

I love the cunning mum naming technique, stayfrosty, I might have to employ that soon - we are really struggling with boys names and the one DH currently likes happens to be an ex-bf name... I really like the name and it was a very long time ago, but we are still kind of in touch with him.... how bad would this be?

LJ, that sounds horrible but it is so good you have a lovely midwife.

Sorry about your granddad, babylady, but really nice to have been there for the funeral.

Glad you got the work issues sorted, Ladylush, phew, like any of us need the extra stress just now!

Right back to work ....

daffodilli · 30/04/2009 09:54

Great news Neddie and mum2be23

Not sure I understand the word gym LizLemon!! and 24+ hours labour? think I'll join you and put my fingers in my ears as well!

Re the swine flu,in work we've been given a list of questions for anyone who thinks they may have it. None of the Docs have said anything to me re precautions or anything, and to be honest dont really talk about it much.Being a Uni GP we've got patients from all over the world arriving on a regular basis. It is a bit worrying, but then I'm starting to worry everytime someone coughs or sniffs near me anyway.

Wont have a chance to get on tonight so wanted to wish you happy hols April!! am still very as its so grey, cold and wet here at the moment! Have a lovely time!

Thusnelda · 30/04/2009 09:54

Liz, I feel the same about twins! I always wanted at least two or three children, and at 38 and 43 when the first one will be born, we have to kind of hurry it along! I might, of course, totally change my mind come September...

Neddie, congratulations on one of each!
And a girl for the girly girl, mumtobe! But please, dont buy everything in pink! I have no idea what "plancentile lakes" are, and I do wish they would volunteer a bit more information sometimes. Maybe you could call a midwife and ask her to explain?

As to cycling, I think the main concern is the danger of getting knocked off, but if you don't cycle in traffic I'm sure it's fine - until the bump gets in the way. I have been cycling to work along the Thames occasionally, but am rather too lazy to do it every day at the moment. I also mean to go swimming on my days off and never do. Got to get my act together. But I do do pelvic floor exercises once or twice a day (3 to 6 times anybody, as recommended?)

Two weeks til scan.

LizLemon · 30/04/2009 10:11

Pelvic floor exercises? I struggle to remember to do them once a day. I'm just going to be weeing all over the place come October I would go swimming but I can't be bothered to get wet.

I'll be 37 when this one makes an entrance so I feel the same Thusnelda Mind you, my cousin was pregnant again when her ds was 9 months so it's possible...

anyone else apart from daffodilli (first timers esp) want to stick their fingers in their ears? My friend called - his wife's been having very regular shout the house down contractions since 11pm Tuesday, and is still only 3-4cm. She's asked for an epidural, which seems perfectly reasonable to me.

daffodilli · 30/04/2009 10:18

Have googled placentile lakes mum2be, not much on it TBH, but what I found said that they are common in the third trimester anyway,as a sort of small 'pool' of blood, usually associated with a thicker placenta, and happen in about 3% of pregnancies all the way through. No link with any sort of problems though which is good. It makes me very that they just announce you have 'problem' A,and then expect you just to go on your way with no information, hopefully your midwife will be able to give you more info, and on the plus side you get to see your little girly girl again, only bigger! x x HTH a little.

Hangingbellyofbabylon · 30/04/2009 10:21

I've got my 20 weeks scan this afternoon, very nervous and excited and hoping the baby will reveal him/herself IYSWIM!! Will check in later with the result.

BabyLady · 30/04/2009 10:26

Congrats on the scan news everybody. So jealous of everyone finding out what sex!! I would love to know but have agreed with DH that it would be a surprise.

Lizlemon know what you mean about going to your happy place. I am in complete denial about the labour. Was a little alarmed when I was talking to my Obstetician about geting an epidural and him using the word "humane" in relation to having one!!!

My bubs is crazy active. Can't believe how much it is moving around. DH can sometimes feel the movements and sometimes not which I find amazing seeing as it feels so strong to me.

daffodilli · 30/04/2009 10:27

Oh help! fingers in ears and eyes firmly shut now! 24+ hours and only 3-4 cms!!! She must be doing amazingly well to have only just asked for an epidural now though....let us know how she gets on LizLemon

ladylush · 30/04/2009 11:02

Neddie - great news on the boy and girl How lovely And congrats on the foal

Liz - actually it's a nice team. I'm sure we have all worked with people who avoid taking responsibility.

April - I think there is now a case in UK who contracted it from someone else who had been to Mexico (they hadn't been themselves). Statistically, I'm sure the risk is low but as a health worker it does concern me esp. as it would be potentially unsafe to receive the treatment. Daf - there are some general guidelines on my trust intranet re. infection control e.g. hand washing, regularly cleaning door handles etc, using alcogel etc.

ladylush · 30/04/2009 11:03

mum2be - congrats on the girl

AprilMeadow · 30/04/2009 11:04

Congrats Mumtobe on you little girl [girl]
Neddie congrats on one of each, how lovely. at the boy kicking his sister in the head.

Good luck for all the scans coming up.

Thanks for the holiday wishes daffodilli.

Everything is packed apart from toiletries - will do that tonight

AprilMeadow · 30/04/2009 11:04

think i have lost my mind as the [girl] for mum2be should have been

LizLemon · 30/04/2009 11:33

that's entirely true ladylush and I'm probably projecting from my last real job, where my boss was completely incompetent and spent the afternoons ducking out to a hotel with her deputy, and then yelled at everyone else for the mistakes she made.

audreyraines · 30/04/2009 13:36

congrats on your little girl mumtobe - how exciting. it sounds like placental lakes are quite common and not generally a problem. i'd ring your midwife and ask her about it. i did that after the sonographer told me about low lying placenta and didn't offer up much info other than saying i'd have to have a CSection if it didn't move!

long labour sounds horrid. mine was 4 hours with ds, so am hoping for something similar!

mumtobe23 · 30/04/2009 13:49

Hello, thanks everyone. I have a midwife appt next wednesday so will ask then, from what I've heard i shouldn't be too concerned so Im not going to worry myself.

blue76 · 30/04/2009 13:50

Congrats on the pink and blue lil uns!

Re swine flu...I read a report this morn which said bird flu is a bigger threat to humans...I'm a natural worrier but in recent yrs there've been that many viruses circulating...also remember shops running out of duct tape after 9/11 due to heightened risk of dirty bombs...

'Those of us who quaked in fear from the expected SARS epidemic and shook from the anticipated avian flu pandemic may feel they?ve been here before. Despite the dire warnings, at the time of writing just 2,600 cases of swine flu have been confirmed or suspected around the world , and there have been 160 deaths, and not all of these may turn out to be caused by swine flu. More people die on UK roads every month.'

interesting article if anyone fancies a read!!

mummyhill · 30/04/2009 16:17

A pink one here.

FairySparkles · 30/04/2009 16:51

Congratulations neddie on one of each - I actually did a "woo hoo" out loud for you whilst in work!! Got a few funny looks!
....and congratulations on your pink bumps mumtobe and mummyhill!!

Ladylush - I'm really thirsty just before I go to bed too - then like you spend half the night awake needing a wee!! Sooooo annoying!

Happy Holidays April - VERY jealous of you, my best friend flys out to florida tomorrow too!

Pelvic floor excercises????? Once in a blue moon I'm afraid - and I'm regretting it now after having dd - an impromtu giggle or sneeze is a bit risky (sorry TMI!!!!)

1st timers put your fingers in your ears again - sorry to shatter any hopes and dreams but my labour with dd lasted 36 hours - the 1st 24 hours were "scream the ante-natal ward down" contractions, till I finally got to 4cm and then they moved me onto delivery suite!! All worth it in the end tho - as you can imagine I'm hoping for a considerably quicker labour this time!!
(dd was back to back hence the long and painful labour - and epidurals don't work on back pain in labour aparently so they said there was no point giving me one as all my contraction pain was in my back and legs!)

I think there should actually be some kind of award - something not unlike an 'oscar' perhaps that all women should get presented with upon birthing their children!! Anyone agree???.....
