OddEyes · 23/03/2009 12:41

sorry schulte!

bronze · 23/03/2009 12:43

Ok may be tmi for those of delicate disposition. Ok that snone of you

Just went to change ds2s nappy and hes pooed but theres also blood and clots. Scared me but not sure how serious it is so phoned NHS who said in situations like this we ask you to make an appointment for today. They should fit you in.
So phone surgery. Don't do home visits except to elderly. So I'm getting a doctor to call me back (hope the receptionist makes it urgent) and have called DH out of his meeting and hes now about 1.5 hours away.
I'm so fucked off that they won't do a home visits. I mean ds is 4 and I can't get him to a surgery. No I can't get a taxi it would cost more than my weeks food bill and would take bloody ages. Community cars offices shut at noon so I was too late for that. Surely home visits should be for those who need them not just the elderly.
Anyway I've been in tears which is not like me, I normally cry after events because of shock but I'm scared for him. I've left him to sleep
I hate this fucking system

bronze · 23/03/2009 12:45

wondering if I should have just called an ambulance. Did the nhs direct self help guide and it said Has your child had diarrhoea (frequent watery or loose faeces/poo) that looks like jelly, or is cranberry or red in colour? so I said yes as theres blood and clots and it said Seek help from a healthcare professional.

Go to A&E (the accident and emergency department at a hospital)

Ask someone to take you to a hospital A&E department. Take a mobile phone.

If the situation worsens, or only if you can?t get to A&E by any other way, dial 999 for an ambulance.

Find your nearest A&E.

You need to get your child to A&E as quickly as possible.

Please review your answers before calling.

You answered yes to the following questions:

  • Has your child had diarrhoea (frequent watery or loose faeces/poo) that looks like jelly, or is cranberry or red in colour?

Now I really am scared

OddEyes · 23/03/2009 12:45

springy - think you did your best, reckon her decision will change your relationship with her though, she will find it hard watching you with baby. hope it doesn't taint your joy.

pants jsut noticed it is afternoon, so must go and start some of the tasks on my list - ironing or making bolognase for freezer?

bronze · 23/03/2009 12:46

I'm going to go and sit with him. Didnt want to cryand scare him but need to make sure hes okj

SpringySunshine · 23/03/2009 12:47

bronze I'm sure there's nothing seriously wrong with him - obviously it needs checking out & obviously you're going to be scared whatever we say, but please try not to get too panicky. Wait until the doctor phones you back (or if that's not in the next half an hour or so, keep hassling them!) & explain the situation. They may well make an exception to the 'only for the elderly' rule in the circumstances.

SmuttyNuttyTaff · 23/03/2009 12:47

Bronze ((hugs)) hope he's ok xx that sucks

Carameli · 23/03/2009 12:48

oh bronze you poor thing, thats terrible they won't do home visits. Complain to the practice manager. I would be furious. I hope you get somewhere with them.

OddEyes · 23/03/2009 12:48

bronze - i am sorry! call A&E and see what they say about coming in directly to them. To be honest I think if you went to the gp they would refer you on to A&E anyway for a proper check up.

SpringySunshine · 23/03/2009 12:49

bronze, clots are different to the whole poo being red. If it was saturated in blood, that'd be completely different. Please don't worry too much - you spoke to a real person & they didn't tell you to phone an ambulance, because they were aware of the full facts, not the online vague version.

OddEyes · 23/03/2009 12:50

beest think about gp being involved is that they can call ahead and make sure you are seen quickly. my dad is an a&e consultant and I know that he would tell me to go to a&e is that happened to me because he has told me to do so fore lesser things.

OddEyes · 23/03/2009 12:52

sorry best thing - can't type!
jsut to be sure though cause I had scare with ds a few times with red things in his poo - what has he eaten recently? red fruit, red sweets, red jelly...

bronze · 23/03/2009 12:52

The whole nappys red, there s a few bits of poo and some clots. He'll open his eyes to respond but thats about it now. They better phone back soon or I will go ape.

Oddly the man at nhs direct asked me the first lot of questions but didnt get as far as that last one. The questions he asked are word for the word the same as on the site.

BabyBolat · 23/03/2009 12:53

Bronze, I would call your doctor again in 15 minutes and explain how worried you are and that you cannot get to the surgery so could he come out to you or should you call an ambulance?

They will make an exception - they are legally not allowed to discriminate home visits on age

try not to panic, watch him for the next 30 minutes or so and if there is any sign this is happening again or he is weakening in himself and if so then call A&E.

SmuttyNuttyTaff · 23/03/2009 12:56

Bronze - how long before your dh gets home? can you go straight to a&e when he gets home?

OP posts:
SmuttyNuttyTaff · 23/03/2009 12:57

Sorry just re read hour and a half

OP posts:
OddEyes · 23/03/2009 12:59

also what is he like in himself?
don't get too scared by nhs direct - tis like you say they have it all scripted not healthcare professionals

SpringySunshine · 23/03/2009 12:59

Perhaps phone NHS direct again & tell them that the website said to call an ambulance & see what they say?

BabyBolat · 23/03/2009 13:01

"The whole nappys red, there's a few bits of poo and some clots. He'll open his eyes to respond but thats about it now." - Bronze that last bit would worry me a bit - I think you should call A&E directly and ask their advice.

bronze · 23/03/2009 13:02

hes lying there. He'll open his eyes if I ask him to but if I ask him if he can talk then theres a very slight shake of the head. He hasn't moved other than that.
Going to phone the docs again soon as its been half an hour.
I think we'll be going straight somewhere when dh gets home. May have to be a&e if docs wont fit us in straight away.

OddEyes · 23/03/2009 13:05

could always call the ambulance service and see whether they think tis worth their time.
think waiting for dh not a bad idea as, time might be what you need in terms of another stool to see if the same. they will send of the current nappy too but will wnat to see if the whatever is causing the nappy to be red still there. you may just have to wait around in a&e for that in which case you will want dh with you to help out with kids.

SpringySunshine · 23/03/2009 13:05

Just because he won't talk doesn't mean that he can't. I don't know about anyone else, but when I was in the depths of morning sickness I basically just lay as still as possible all day refusing to engage with anyone because I felt so rubbish. Not because I was actually at any serious risk - in reality I was fine, I just felt dreadful.

That's not to say that you shouldn't get him checked out ASAP, but I just don't like to think of you panicking there when you're on your own & so heavily pregnant & so on - try not to think of the worst case scenarios if you can help it xx

OddEyes · 23/03/2009 13:08

no point going to gp - you need to go to a&e thatis where the gp will be sending you. just a referral there will help in terms of waitng to be seen so try and get him on the phone.
otherwise call dh and tell him to meet you at the hospital and call an ambulance. tell them about nappy and responsiveness and they will come.
soryy bronze - hope all works out
