Seen the story now on the Sep thread. Just don't know what to say - how utterly devastating.

jessicasmummy · 24/05/2005 18:04

Just seen sarah's post - sitting here almost in tears - what an utter disgrace the hospital is. i cant say anymore without getting too upset.

montaguemonkey · 24/05/2005 19:56

Hello everyone,

Thought I'd better respond to concerns that it has gone a bit quiet. Life is too busy working full time and with an 18month old, keep fogetting I am pregnant!

However, remembered today as had midwife appointment. I am 20weeks but we don't get another scan here. Just got heartbeat and blood pressure, etc. Nice to hear heartbeat as I hadn't had an appointment since I was 11 weeks and since I am large I don't tend to get as much movement as early on.

Also had a good chat and midwife happy to go with home birth this time round, so coming to discuss with me and dh in summer.

Read the awful story in the Sept thread and am aghast. All I can say is that I have enjoyed excellent care in Edinburgh both ante and post natal and find it awful that such a horrible situation was made 10 times worse.

Did see Desperate Midwives yesterday which was interesting as I love these programmes (I was a complete Discovery Health addict just after Emily was born - sad or what!!).

Will try to stay in touch more!

MM

morningpaper · 24/05/2005 20:05

Just read the September thread - poor poor Sarah. So sad.

I would say to you first-time mums that I had great antenatal, labour and postnatal care last time and I got great service from the hospital and the midwives.

Not much news... saw a friend with a 4 week old today - it screamed for three hours and reminded me exactly what life was like was my daughter! Very very cute though and watching her feed her made me want to have my own little nursling again .

jessicasmummy · 24/05/2005 20:09

4 weeks old and a screamer?! I didnt hit that stage with jess until 4 months - maybe i was lucky!

morningpaper · 24/05/2005 20:24

Lucky - Yes it all depends what you pull out of the hat I think!

Mine was a screamer from the second she was OUT! Hours and hours and hours of it ...

Oooh what fun, having more!

Joseyjo · 24/05/2005 20:51

la la la la not listening!!!! all of our babies will sleep all the time they are supposed to and never scream. honest.

jessicasmummy · 24/05/2005 20:53

PMSL! I would say, the first 4 months were the best ive had - she is a nightmare now - had an hour and a half of screaming tonight before she would finally go to sleep!!!

mawbroon · 24/05/2005 22:16

hello all.

Not had the most pleasant evening tonight. The midwife came round tonight to tell me that the hospital are recalling me for my AFP test as I am higher than normal risk. My result is 1 in 216 as opposed to the 1 in 250 which is quoted as normal. DH and I have been discussing it, and we feel at the moment that 1 in 216 is not high enough risk to justify the 1 in 100 risk of miscarriage that an amnio carries.

Has anyone else had a higher risk result? And what did you do about it? Rationally, I know that it is still a very small risk and there is a perfectly good chance that the baby will be absolutely fine, but it is hard not to worry about it. We are going back to the hospital on Thursday morning to speak to the consultant and if we decide on an amnio (doubt it) then we will get it done there and then.

I knew it was all going too well......

JM - I'm due on 27th Oct so don't think you will be the last on the thread! I have poked my nose in at the November thread too just in case I am left "naepals" at the end of the month!!

ELF1981 · 25/05/2005 07:16

Joseyjo I think that we'll end up with two car seats too, but it's handy to use for all those grandparents who will insist on "baby stealing"!

Bit fed up at the mo. My Goddaughter was rushed to hospital with an allergic reaction on Monday to something she'd eaten, my mum's just been told she'll need to go to hospital for an op to correct her arm after she broke it, and my brother has just been diagnosed with cancer. Everybody is being so positive about things, GD will recover fine, mum's op will sort her out, and my bro's consultant is very optimistic. But still not the best week in the world.

To top it off, a woman at work is making my life hell at the moment. Don't feel like being there today, but can't not go as got two important meetings. Just want to spend my day in bed with one had on the remote control and the other on my belly rubbing Boo.

Ref movement - I don't feel much from Boo. Just the odd flutter, so I'm eagerly waiting proper movements and trying not to get myself stressed out. Got my scan in less than two weeks now so that will put my mind at ease.

On plus side, I'm 20 weeks today. Half way there!

Hope all have a good day,
Elf xxxx

SusiS · 25/05/2005 08:22

lol josey!! if mine won't sleep and screams all the time she'll be coming to your house for a few months till you've got her sorted

morning girls!
hope you all are having a great time

i am feeling really well lately; my energy is coming back *wohheyyy

luckily this time round i don't need to concentrate on all those things i have to buy!
have got most of it from ds!
i might have to sort through it though *hmmmmm

mawbroon: Personally I wouldn't have the amnio but of course each person feels differently about that. Have you had your 20 week scan? Surely if there is a problem then the 20 week scan will pick up abnormalities with the heart/kidney/amnio fluids etc. - I thought that was one of the things it checked for? Can you ask for a more thorough scan instead of the amnio?

kebabbits · 25/05/2005 08:27

Aw I've outed myself!

morningpaper · 25/05/2005 08:34

Quick someone else post - aaaaaaah.

My 20-week scan for dd picked up on several indicators for Down's - so surely if this was the case your scan would pick up some problems?

munz · 25/05/2005 09:14

JM - hiya thanks for the note on the TTC thread, u can CAT me if u want to, how's all with u?

(sorry to butt in there girls)

mawbroon · 25/05/2005 12:04

Thanks for your replies.
That's just the problem. West Lothian don't do a 20 week scan as routine, so I haven't been scanned since 12 weeks. I am going to ask for a more detailed scan and if they think that it looks ok (I know that they can't provide a diagnosis from the scan) then we will not go ahead with the amnio.

I'll let you know how I get on.

alterego · 25/05/2005 12:21

mawbroon - I'm having a 20 week scan on Thursday, following a nuchal result of 1 in 306 Down's risk. I've ben told that this scan will give them a much better idea of whether there is any problem. I would have thought the same would be true with afp problems (is that spina bifida btw?). I was offered cvs at the nuchal scan and turned it down in favour of waiting for the 20 week scan.

Elf1981 · 26/05/2005 07:17

Mawbroon - hope everything works out okay

Thank God it's Thursday and I only have to suffer today and tomorrow at work then I get a three day break. I really need this long weekend. My team leader is back today and I'm going to sit down and discuss things that have happened with him. Basically they want me to work as long as possible, which I was willing to do providing I'm fit but with all the stuff that has happened the last week, I'm certainly not going to put myself through that hell til the baby is born. Yesterday due to somebodies pain in the ass attitude, I didn't get a lunch break. I had 15 minutes in which I managed to eat a bag of requests inbetween a load of questions being fired at me. Not ideal at the best of times but at 20 weeks pregnant?!

When is everybody planning to start their maternity leave? And how long are you all planning to have off?

bonniej · 26/05/2005 08:13

mawbroon, I hope everything goes okay for you.

elf, i'm sorry to hear of all your bad news, hope things start to get better soon.

I haven't been on for a while as have just been quite busy. Keep planning on getting all dds baby bits down from the loft and having a real sort out but haven't got round to it yet. Am quite looking forward to seeing all the baby clothes again! I've been feeling very well (luckily) but am getting rather large now. I am 21 weeks and have a midwife appointment today which I'm looking forward to as get a chance to hear heartbeat.

I started off preg at just under 10st and am now 10st 9lb seems a lot seeing as the baby only weighs probably not even a pound at this stage. Oh well! How's everyone else's weight going? I'm feeling loads of movements which is reassuring, but also when the baby has a rest, I get worried! poor thing can't win. Anyway off now, hope things at work improve for you Elf. take care all, and call me thick but kebabbits, who are you?????

ChaCha · 26/05/2005 09:06

Mawbroon - my turn to gatecrash ;)
Thank you so much for all the information you have given me, I feel a tad relieved to say the least! Really appreciate your efforts. Well, I guess that's the exact route i'll be going down when i get that form - must admit, not bad news at all, thought i'd be stoney broke!
Cheers Mawbroon (p.s. My mum used to buy me 'The Broons' at Christmas and 'Oor Wullie' - was that the inspiration behind your name? I'm going back about 20 years...geeesh!

jolovett · 26/05/2005 09:36

Elf - I'm hoping to start my maternity leave as early as possible. With working full time, running a business part time and building a house I think something has got to give. Building the house can't go on hold and I film wedding videos and have loads of bookings from now on in so can't really let them down so work is going to have to come lowest priority. Thinking of starting it at the end of July. I'm only going to return to work part time/home so coming back 3 months after the baby is born seems okay to me.

Regarding weight - I lost half a stone in the first trimester and have now put on 41lbs since then so I'm still lighter than I was before pg! Midwife seems happy with it though and says the baby is growing normally so not worried.

Went for antenatel appointment yesterday. Everything is good all tests came back clear and my downs risk is 1 in 12500. Just have to go back in a month for a check up.

Does anyone know if it's okay to sunbathe while pg? Hoping to get away for a week at the end of June and was just wondering.

bonniej · 26/05/2005 14:04

jolovett, 41lbs that's nearly 3 stone (I know it must have been a mistake ), re the sunbathing, i wouldn't. I did when pg with dd and ended up with a 'pregnancy mask' which is like tanned patches on your face that don't really go. They have faded but are still noticeable when I catch any sun at all. This time I am keeping well out of the sun. It is recommended that you do as it's something to do with the pigment in your skin changing during pregnancy. Might be ok with loads of suncream though. I'm going away next Saturday and can't wait (but only to Devon so no chance of sunburn there!!)

morningpaper · 26/05/2005 14:26

I've put on 1 stone 4 lbs already

I'm DOOMED!

mozarellamamma · 26/05/2005 17:49

Aah I've only put on 6lbs and we're 20 weeks next. I look like a fattie tho...and am eating like a hog . One thing I'm worrried about is that the midwives/hospital tell you what you want to hear now but once you're there in labour they'll 'take over' and do it their way. (i've heard off the record a very different story from a midwife at my hospital you see). I know it's all a bit hippy and this my first ( so I could well change my tune!) but I'm really keen to try and do it naturally and move about alot and not lie down and be a 'good women' who gets bossed about by the medical proffession. One bit I'm really dreading is when the baby's born and hubby being sent home whilst me and babe will have to go down to those wards all alone..am I being melodramatic/paranoid ...?

morningpaper · 26/05/2005 19:43

Mozarella mummy: If your DH is anything like mine then after 3 days awake and 27 hours in labour he'll be out the door and off to bed and soon as the shoulders are delivered.

People's experience seems to vary a lot - I'd recommend taking a tour of the unit beforehand, most hospitals seem to offer this. And write down your wishes in your birthplan so that people know what you want.
