Here ya go, new thread! We're almost there!!!!!

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
bigcar · 23/02/2009 16:38

Juicygirlpink, glad to hear you're home You must have been scared, part of thier job is to offer reassurance where needed, they are the ones qualified to know when there is something seriously wrong, if you could tell yourself, they would all be out of a job If it happens again (which hopefully it won't) don't feel silly, if you are concerned, go back, it's what they are there for, however many times they HAVE seen it all before! I always thought eggs were supposed to be linked to high cholesterol rather than blood pressure (?), tbh it seems a bit of a strange comment to make, I would assume they would say your blood pressure is high because you've had pain and spotting and had to wait a long time to see a doctor I'm sure an afternoon with your feet up in front of the telly would be the perfect way to lower your blood pressure

June2009 · 23/02/2009 16:44

ooh juicy, just caught up with the thread, sorry to hear about all this
Glad you're back home now, please try and not worry.

I get really annoyed with the way we're handled sometimes.
It's shame they wouldn't explain to you about the limit on eggs. I would have been tempted to point out she was not answering our questions and ask her what her problem was.
I am usually calm / patient but found out pregnancy is bringing up the "psycho" in me . (/me blames it on lack of sleep.)

Can you call them, or the GP and ask them to clarify?

I generally watch my cholesterol levels (family history) and was told ages ago to try and limit consumption to around 2 eggs a week, I don't know whether this is still current advice. I don't even know if cholesterol is directly linked to high blood pressure, I just know both together is a bad combination.

I hope it was just one of these things and you'll be just fine from now on.

Make sure this episode doesn't stop you from calling them again if you are worried, that's what they are here for.

Got my free prescription of gaviscon today even if I could afford it if I really had to pay for it but you know what I just paid my income tax and we are entitled to that little bit of nhs support at the end of the day. Don't worry about feeling "silly", it's not silly

Hope you manage to relax tonight!
I can recommend watching the "ghost village" (is it? or "ghost something") film with Ricky Gervais and found it really funny.

ermintrude13 · 23/02/2009 17:21

June, they've just lifted that 'ban' on eggs and said they're not evil little bombs of cholesterol after all, and you can eat loads before it becomes significant. Better late than never, I guess...

I'm going to doc's to get Gaviscon prescription this week - have bought the first couple of bottles but as you say we are entitled to free prescriptions so may as well have them!

Juicy, how frustrating for you, hope you get some straight talking soon. See above about eggs - as MrsMcJr said, the avoidance of salt is their general answer to higher BP (though you're clearly not OD-ing on it in your normal diet!) but I have no idea why avoiding eggs might bring down blood pressure, stop bleeding, stop pain or do anything else relevant to your problem.
Hope it doesn't reoccur!

Juicygirlpink · 23/02/2009 18:15

hello again,

Thanks for all your advice & kind words ! Now a bit more relaxed! Just had a long chat with mum re-living all the drama of today, she thinks that the nurse felt she had to say something 'useful' so said that crap about eggs!!! Whatever, dh has made it his mission now to 'look after me' bless him & stop eating eggs with me! Hahaha I am with all those who are getting gaviscon on prescription, me I need a new 500ml bottle every month & I also get cetraban (which is e45 in it's most basic form) but have limited to one tub per month! I did try & explain that being pg has made my skin extremely dry & that 1 tub that would last a normal person 1 month lasts me about a week but they didn't seem to care, told me I had togo back each time I needed a new one - oh well , think they thought I was selling it down the Market or something!!! anyway, the point I am making is that get what you can girls including e45!
Going to continue this MSG from my computer hold on....

Juicygirlpink · 23/02/2009 18:26

...think my blood pressure will be normal now- being back home & all!
June - could of done with you sorting the women out today . i forgot to mention the whole 'are you drinking enough water' bollax, you only need to look at the colour of my urine to see I am (as she did 10 mins later when testing for protein etc & said oh yes its nice & clear you can't be dehydrated rubbish!) she also said 'you are seeing us regularly & we check everything' that to is bollax, I pointed I have only seen a midwife once & that was at 10 WEEKS PREGNANT!!!!! she didn't have much more to say after that!

anyway - what have I learnt from today first off & most importantly, make sure you have sufficient snacks with you in your hospital bag for b day or an m&s nearby for a nice sarnie (hospital food smell made me gag!)
don't ignore your gut feelings, believe that your bp will rise just by being in hospital!!!! & don't eat eggs!!!!!! ha ha ha

You must go & see shopaholic movie! we had a great time yesterday pm, dh played on his phone all the way thru & I just sad & giggled!

lauraloo09 · 23/02/2009 19:11

juicy just saw your posts sorry to hear you were in a state of panic over baby but I am extremely relieved for you that everything is ok!

Well i'm totally knackered, just back from shopping all day and I got my pram went to glasgow pram centre and got the new quinny buzz 4 racoon colour with carrycot and shopping basket for £459 which is wonderful considering mothercare are looking for around the £600 mark for all that. Only thing I have to buy is the footmuff (they were out of stock) which will set me back a further £30 - £40 which I dont mind paying considering how much I saved!

Will try and catch up on the posts before I fall asleep

MrsMcJnr · 23/02/2009 20:18

Yay Laura something ticked off on your list. I actually emailed the GPC today to ask for info about the Emmaljunga one I am looking at. No response yet they were really helpful when we were looking for a buggy for DS but we ended up being it from somewhere else because of the deal we found at the time.

Juicy - you are not wrong about the need for snacks in hospital, I was so glad I was well stocked with DS and plan to do the same again.

llynnnn · 23/02/2009 22:09

yikes, just caught up with all your posts, love the new thread title, thanks Tee!

juicy - sorry to hear about your scare. I would've done the same and gone straight to the midwife. Shocked that they gave you such a tough time, aren't they supposed to be there to help and reassure!!???

I'm 26 weeks today and it does seem to be flying by now, cant wait to meet my new little daughter!!

Ho to everyone else, good to hear you are all doing well albeit with indigestion/insomnia/tiredness etc etc!! arrr the joys!!

daisy5 · 24/02/2009 06:10

Today I woke at 4.10am - at least I got 7 hours sleep though. Cough has pretty much gone, but just weary. Desperately behind on everything again, so got up to do some stuff.

Re: NHSvsNCT - I signed up for NCT as it was so highly recommended, and we did have a fab 'teacher' who took away almost all my fear. Apparently the local NHS classes where I used to live was so dreadful that almost no one went. However the NHS classes in the next town over were really great and not all that different from NCT. So I came to the conclusion that there was a great variation when it came to NHS classes.

Both have their own party political broadcasts btw, once you have a child, you get used to it. This obesity obsession is driving me nuts. Instead of being educated about a 'balance' in all things, including food, they get told that some things are 'bad' and others are 'good' which is a load of trollop and I think an unhealthy perspective in itself. My daughter loves fruit, but sometimes she needs a biscuit. She loves cous cous but also likes chips sometimes. It's about a healthy balance imo.

JuicyGirl - yup, completely understand where you are coming from. My experience the other day was the wierdest most surreal thing that frightened the life out of me, but all the tests came back 'fine and normal'. It leaves you in quite a state of confusion. I've come to the conclusion, that pregnancy can just do the oddest things. to your body and that all you can do is swallow feeling stupid and keep fronting up to the doctor every time it happens. There is a good reason why june that pregnancy brings out the psycho in us - it's because we get told the stupidest things sometimes - this is the funniest one that you may hear 'breastfeed babies don't get wind' - never believe that!!!!

mrsmcjnr - glad to hear your Morrisons outing was fun. Interested in what you say - I'm not one to believe in 'old wives tales' but the more people I speak to, the more who seem to back up the 'boy pregnancies are easier'. Naturally it's not everyone, but quite intriguing.

tee - glad to hear that the Quinny sounds a great winner. Actually, there were a few other complaints about the noisiness back in 2006, but as you say, they've probably fixed it, as it seems to be hugely popular.

chocciedooby · 24/02/2009 10:47

Hi everyone. Great to have a new thread. Well done Tee Trying to catch up. Its a very busy thread.

Dreams - Been having a lot. The last one I had was about giving birth to a toddler! I really wanted my last "baby" but out popped a whopper that was ready to start montessori school. I was extremely upset that I had been cheated out of the baby days

Mrsmc - agree with you on the babygros. I put both ds's in them for the first few months. It was so much easier. Babies need changing so regularly after spewing up milk, saliva and nappy overflow so they were very convenient and they look so comfy in them too.

June - You will be fine at your pals wedding. Just make sure you sit down as much as you can. My best friend got married 2 weeks before I was due DS1. I had put a lot of weight on during the pregnancy and on the wedding day my feet were extremely swollen. I really enjoyed the day and wouldn't have missed it for the world but I was glad that I declined her request for me to be her bridesmaid. I wouls have looked hideous and been too knackered for all of that at nearly 9 months gone
The NCT classes sound great. I always envy my sister that talks about it a lot. Her ds is 2 now and she has great friends for life that she met before giving birth to him.

Lauroloo - I had C.Tunnel with both DS's and have started to get it a bit this time too. I tried the splints the first time around but found them very uncomfortable and found it better to sleep without them. Hope you get on ok. It's amazing how it all disappears once you have given birth.

Snowwombat - Hope you have a wonderful wedding day.How lovely to be getting married in Sydney, my favourite city.

Cramps in the night - Had my first calf cramp last night so going to stuff a banana this evening. I remember the pain of them from last pg.s. I think I will buy some tonic water too.

Doris - lol at keeing DD's in the garden . Oh and my new pushchair system has been sitting in our front room for 3 weeks now. I really must move it up to the loft.

Daisy - Sorry to hear about your cough keeping you awake. Have you tried drinking warm water with a spoonful of honey in it? Sometimes it helps with a tickly throat.
I have also had some minor heart palpitations this time around. They have not been strong enough for me to be too converned but it makes sense that if all our organs are pushed up and working twice as hard that somethings gotta give.

ermin - I also have some eczema on my hands. Never normally get it but now that you mention it, I have been eating some peanuts every now and then. I am going to stop and see what happens. Gee - when I read back on this post I realise how many pg. side effects I am having .

Juicy so sorry to hear about your pains and spotting . Hope you are ok now. It must have been frightening enough for you. Did the hospital explain what the spotting was caused by?

Had a wonderful wkend. My parents were over for 4 nights and minded the boys on Saturday so dh and I got our nioght away in a hotel. Sadly couldn't get any spa treatments in the end (booked out) but didn't really matter as we simply chilled out, ate, read, talked etc. It was lovely.

chocciedooby · 24/02/2009 10:55

RE: After delivery....I agree with everyone else about the bleeding, sore parts, after pains etc. The things I clearly remember were the tightening of my stitches on day 3.No-one told me they could be so sore. I was also really grateful that people had advised me to buy lots and lots of maternity pads! You rreally cannot believe what comes out of your body. Hope I am not scaring anyone but thought it was best to prepare you. Also, I bled for 9 weeks after giving birth.

Random Tips - Bring bottled water into hospital with you as you can get very parched. Also your own pillow if you like home comforts and want to get any chance of a decent night sleep.
Some nice face and hand/body creams are also a good idea to help make you feel nice after going through birth etc. The other great tip that I was given was "Tea tee oil". I was my saviour. I put 10 drops into the bath and bathed 3 times a day. really helps to heal down below.

Ok - I will stop waffling now.

dreamydowler · 24/02/2009 11:35

Hi everyone Sorry I havent managed to post in such a long time but at least I managed to find the mew thread. I havent had chance to catch up with everyones news yet but hope you are all well. Ive just got back from the midwife and things are going well Im 24 weeks today and measuring 25 so hopefuly not too huge. I did have 2++ of glucose though which happens every pregnancy and have a gtt at 28 weeks ugh! I also have another scan then and am hoping they will be able to tell us the sex of baby. Took my 2 year old with us today and she was very excited at hearing babys heartbeat. She has been very ill and was in hospital for a few days last weekend with gastroenteritis. It was awful as she had to have a gastonasal tube fitted to keep fluids down. I stayed with her on a put you up bed for 2 nights which was exhausting. Shes eating us out of house and home now though to make up for it. Is everyone having lots of pancakes? I made a mammouth batch of batter last night and made mountains of fluffy american pancakes for breakfast and for kids to take for lunches. Dp and me had lots too. Got my older daughter and my granddaughter coming for pancake tea and will no doubt have to take some to mum and dad too so will need to make another batch of batter up ready this afternoon. Cant believe how quickly things are going I also got my matb1 form and my form to apply for the healthy eating grant today if you are 25 weeks or more dont forget to ask for it ladies it is worth £190. I too am feeling huge and wondering if I will be like the side of a house by the time baby comes. going to read through the threads now to see what Ive missed before chaining myself to the frying pan for the rest of the day

chocciedooby · 24/02/2009 11:54

Oh my god....I just got on the scales....bit of a shocker! I have put on 22lbs!

Juicygirlpink · 24/02/2009 12:21

choccie- me to! aghhh what a week I am having im 25 +1 & I have put on 14 pounds but I was over weight to start with now, i feel terrible!

ermintrude13 · 24/02/2009 12:33

daisy boo to waking up so early! Can you manage to get 40 winks after lunch or something? DC were back to school after half-term and Inset day yesterday and I really had to drag myself out of bed at 7.30.

chocciedooby if it eczema the docs are really loath to give you anything strong for it - hydrocortisone or mild steriod - although if it's just your hands you should push for that, it won't affect the baby if you use it weak and for a short period of time. Someone's mentioned already that you can get bland moisturising creams on prescription (they're cheap to buy but not as cheap as free!) and keeping hands very moisturised will help soothe and prevent further eczema. Ultrabase and aqueous cream are what I use.

Post-partum yukkiness alert: after I had my DD in a birth centre the MW warned me that I'd probably pass a few bits of placenta in the next few days because it had little bits missing, and that they'd look like rags! Ho yes, slimy rags is just what they looked like. And I had to catch them and save them for her to look at! Yum.

dreamy good to hear from you again. I love american pancakes and make them regularly, but we're going classic tonight and I'm hoping I can still make thin crepe-type ones.

choccie and Juicy I don't think those weight gains are terrible. However, I'm avoiding stepping on the scales myself until I've had time to digest all the pancakes I'll have tonight.

ermintrude13 · 24/02/2009 12:34

PS Meant to ask: is anyone else going for, or hoping to go for homebirth?

LittleSarah · 24/02/2009 12:41

dreamy - Gosh, is it pancake day?? That has totally passed me by! I am out reviewing tonight so I won't be getting any!

I'm glad to hear your wee girl is feeling better, poor her having to go to hospital, and poor you, you must have been so worried!

laura - Glad to hear you have your buggy. I want to get the baby nest that goes with mine but I think my mum will buy it for us nearer the time. Talking of buggies you should hear dh's family whenever they hear about the price. The attitude at the last family dinner was pretty much why would anyone spend so much/not get second hand. Argh. Nothing wrong with second hand and bargain buys, I love them, but it's this kind of oh what is Sarah like spending £350 on a buggy, the girl is OTT attitude! I did mention how long they last and good investment and so on but hello, why should I defend my spending decisions? It's not like I'm going mad, in fact everything else I'm planning to get fairly cheap but I want a good new buggy.

Dh's brother's girlfriend who is 16 weeks pregnant said something about how she didn't want a buggy as she always wanted baby close to her... hmmmm. I feel she will be a PFB fanatic. I loved my sling (and will be using it again, yes despite the fact it is old) but surely you can't survive without a buggy? Surely tis madness!? I told her it wasn't really practical but who knows if she listened. Dh's grandpa has a second hand buggy that he offered us so they can just have that I'm sure.

choccie and all those commenting on after delivery I have admit my memory is vague there except for the excruciating weeing! Urgh. I didn't tear but I did 'graze quite badly' and man did it sting like feck when I went to the loo. Always had to take the jug of warm water to pour as I peed and still it hurt. And for weeks! i thought it would last a few days. God, maybe being pregnant isn't so bad after all.

Juicy - Hope all is well with you, sorry about your bleed, must have been very nerve-wracking!

Snowwomabt - Hope everything was wonderful for your wedding! Congratulations.

Well, I spoke to my temp agency boss the other day and she has confirmed they will be organising my SMP and she will write to confrim details which I'm sure you'll agree is great MrsMcJnr!

Still lots of uni work to do but just about on top of it.

If anyone can help me with these two articles please let me know, think I'll put a wee ad in the media section too.

Doing something on breast reconstruction, looking for a lady who doesn't want one, and for another who did and has had one. Want to look at the psychological aspects so also looking for experts in that area.

My other one is about encouraging people who struggle with reading to read. This would be adults/kids/dyslexics/anyone really. Anyone who discovered a book and that turned them onto the written word, or would love to read but has given up as it is so difficult. I'd also like to look at techniques to encourage readers, like reading aloud, and so on, get advice from teachers parents and so on.

Finally I am nearly finished all my restaurant reviews but am a little stressed as I need to complete all by Friday and have five still needing written/needing work!

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.

LittleSarah · 24/02/2009 12:43

Ermintrude - I shall be having another home birth, very excited!

lauraloo09 · 24/02/2009 13:32

afternoon all!

Ermintrude I'll be giving birth at my local community midwife unit, a bit worried about this as it is my first child and thinking maybe i should be going to the consultant led maternity unit in Paisley which is 20mins from my house.

littlesarah I was a bit at the prices of some prams but thought when I was saving £150 on the quinny thought it was best to buy. I have been given some second hand stuff from my brother and SIL like a crib and infant carrier but really didn't want a second hand pram/buggie.

chocie since I fell pregnant I have put on around the 10lbs mark, but again I was overweight to start with so now really starting to panic about losing the weight...at least I'm off crisps and choc for lent tomorrow for 6 weeks so hopefully that should help me keep off the weight too

Really starting to think more of labour and panicing, esp the stuff that goes on afterwards, some nieve (sp?) people (like me) think you give birth and then go back to normal how wrong was I

ermintrude13 · 24/02/2009 13:41

lauraloo I hope we haven't scared you with our talk of post-natal indignities! Some of it is a bit of a shock - as a society we don't talk about these things enough until they're about to happen to us, which makes it hard I think. But throughout all of it you've got this lovely new baby and so it's amazing what bodily weirdness you'll put up with when you're cooing at your LO. And here we are, a lot of us, coming in for round 2, or 3 or 8 and still looking forward to it

If you're worried about the MW unit, do they have any open days or pre-meets for mums-to-be who are booked in? I found it v reassuring to talk to some women who'd given birth there - fortunately I knew 2 from my NCT classes who gave birth 3 wks before I did so I'd heard from them too. And you can ask the MWs to talk through the protocols about transferring if there are any complications, which they're all set up to do.

Also, you know they won't take you unless all seems to be going well, so being accepted at a MW unit already means that your health is good and if the baby goes head down towards the end all should go smoothly.

Someone's mentioned hypnobirthing tapes to helps calm stress, you could try those, or read Sheila Kitzinger's book on pregnancy and birth which has a lot about the psychological process of giving birth. Some of it might sound a bit tree-hugging, but the basic idea that your body can do this and that is's a natural, powerful process with a lovely conclusion, can really help you prepare.

lauraloo09 · 24/02/2009 13:51

ermintrude I'm actually a bit thankful that people are highlighting their experiences of labour and of the stuff that goes on after birth, I feel I would be going into labour with my "eyes open" now I also dont even know what I need to buy for my hospital bag in the way of pads etc but I'm sure that'll all be covered way before our due dates

I am scheduled to have a tour of the midwife unit and I do think that there is 'open days' I can go to, think my MW will be discussing this with me at my next appointment on the 20th March. I know that they have a few ambulances on call solely for the midwife unit to immediately transport any people with difficulties to Paisley so that eases my mind a bit as well.

Have been looking for a nice changing bag to buy, the one with the quinny buzz is a very small clip on one, does anyone have any suggestions?

June2009 · 24/02/2009 14:10

Hi everybody!

Taking a small break from work, completely snowed under and hectic at the moment (when is this new accountant actually starting??)

Bad night sleep, alarm woke us up at 4am and then I kept being woken up by dh who was sleep-talking (he kept repeating "sorry about the alarm" )

rant alert
Really angry wil mil today as she is involving us in their divorce now and we migth have to a) show up in court, b) pay for a solicitor (just to let us know whether we can just ignore her) c) or even pay for an accountant to dig up some 10 year old files when her dh was a director of our company for 1 year. (b4 dh and I met).

The company was not making a profit then, Fil did not put any money in or take any out and she knows this. Pil and dh were barely on speaking terms then.
So why is she bringing this up unless she is trying to directly upset us when she knows we are expecting our first baby!

We asked her yesterday what she was trying to achieve exactly appart from causing us all stress and worry and she said "it's not me, its your dad who's doing this." (well as far as I can see the letter is coming from her via her solicitors, she's clearly the one behind it).

Last month she sent a letter asking her other son to show her/her solicitor his mortgage application from 2 years ago, he was like "Err, no. What does it have to do with you exactly???"
She also admitted to her dd yesterday she was only sending letters like that to waste cost and time to piss Fil off.
She must realise that involving everybody like this is pushing people away from her, surely!

Really fed up with her, I refuse to make an effort anymore.

Anyway, rant over (and thanks for listening! I just needed to let some steam off :D).

Last time I looked I'd put on 18 pounds (@ week 24 I think). Nevermind, I'm planning to go back running after the birth as I miss it.
I have seen the physio now, she said have "mild" spd and should be ok if I do the exercises she showed me and think about how I sit/move etc. In 2 weeks we'll see if I can go back to the gym and what exercises I can do which I am really looking forward to.

We may try pancakes today even though last time they made me nauseous (thinking it might have been the eggs, I'm completely gone off them since I got pg.)

I made pizza base instead (with beer at dh's request).
In fact am gonna check how it's risen before I bury myself under my spreadhseets again!

chocciedooby · 24/02/2009 14:44

Lauroloo I too hope we haven't scared you about labour etc but to be honest, I find the whole pregnancy thing is the hardest.

Yes labour hurts but it's over in a matter of hours and you have a bundle of joy in your arms that helps you cope with anything

Besides you can get all sorts of pain relief these days as well.

If labour and post-partum was that horrendous, why would some of us be putting ourselves through it all again and again ??? It is such an exciting time when your waters break or you have a show etc, ready to go into labour. My only concern this time around is that I will go too quickly and won't get to the hospital in time! I also have my 2 DS's to take care of whilst I go into labour and thats not easy when you live in a different country to your parents/family etc. I have some great friends but they all have their own handful of kids. Not sure what I am going to do about that yet.

Now I have got myself in a panic .....

chocciedooby · 24/02/2009 14:45

Looks like I am the leader as far as weight gain is going then

ermintrude13 · 24/02/2009 14:48

choccie If friends don't come forth offering to take your DC off your hands when you're in labour, start thinking about who you'll ask!

Mine really think they're going to be at the birth because it'll be at home. To be honest, if it went smoothly they could (be in the house, not the room!) but ideally they'll be down the road where they can't hear me swearing
