evening all,
just popping in very briefly to say congratulations to sweetheart-im really pleased for you and have everything crossed too
trib-also congratulations to you also.glad your nephew is settling in well and great news about the job-you must be really pleased
pink-sorry to hear about the flat battery.dh's was also flat this morning and ended up taking a days leave as he couldnt get into work!!
weve also bought one of those cuddle robes in poundstretcher-so much cheaper than everywhere else and just as nice.bought the last of the babys things yesterday in babies r us but im really confused about sheets and blankets.we bought lots of different ones mainly for the moses basket but was wondering that if the baby is born in june and wearing a long sleeved sleepsuit will you need to use blankets aswell or will it be too hot? probably a really daft question but if anyone has any views on this theyd be gartefully recieved, thank you

bubbaloo · 18/04/2005 21:44

gartefully=gratefully

Well done Trib - you'll make a fantastic tealady I'm sure! And I'm glad your lovely new nephew seems to be relaxed already!

Lippy - oo great! Hot hol here we come (money permitting of course!) Thanks for the hydration tips. Was your dd ok with you by the pool? How did you stop her getting too hot?

What was she singing? Bless

Bubbs - I was wondering exactly the same thing as you regarding bedding - I mean, how do you know if your baby's overheating or too cold? I was thinking of using lightweight sleeping bag type things or just one of those drawstring nighties in the height of summer, but I don't actually know what I'm talking about.

PinkArjuna · 18/04/2005 22:50

I don't really understand that tog system my eyes glossed over and I got bored - Sure fire way of my brain switching off. I don't know what temperature human beings are supposed to be let alone too hot I only know when I have a roaring temperature but have never known what its supposed to be.

Cobweb · 19/04/2005 05:31

Sweetheart that is fantastic news big hugs I think about you often and so happy to read your wonderful news

Teabelly, yes 23rd May is so soon isn't it and I am working until 13th !!! The housing that the council wanted to give us was emergency and to be honest you wouldn't want to put your worst enemy in it trying to be positive that something will turn up soon.

Starting to think about packing hospital bags now, does anyone have any good tips as to what to pack and what not to pack. After two already you would think I would know all this, but its been so long that I can't remember LOL

Hope everyone has a good day. Insomina again !!!

LipstickMum · 19/04/2005 08:27

Morning everyone

The sunny smile belies the bubbling rage underneath think positive thoughts, think positive thoughts
I'm trying to keep calm, but keep going through scenarios with the builders where I keep losing it and getting angry lol ANyway, they're here today and are being very pleasant... but I'm ready for a fight

Charley, dd was born at the end of May and I took her to 'baby swimming' lessons in October. So she was a little used to the water by the time we went away in November. It's worth doing, she loved swimming and not being cold getting out! As for keeping her cool, she wore a tshirt or vest or maybe just a nappy and sat in the shade all the time. And had plenty of fluids. Get one of those UV suits to cover all the really sensitive bits. Hopefully, Pod wont stress too much about the heat. Do have a-c though, if you do need to cool down, and especially at night. As I said before, don't expect to do too much, or stray too far from the pool and you'll really love it!

Dd was singing her own little made up tune

Guess what? I have started to write my hospital bag list and a list of things I need to buy for the new baby

Time to go and check up on the builders...

Trib - congrats on job and lovely new nephew.
Lippy - they're so sweet with their made up tunes aren't they - bless her. So what exactly is left for these builders to do? Do you want us to get together some kind of petition or threatening letter?
All this talk of hospital bags and baby clothes is making me think I should do something. Once the Fimble has painted the nursery I'll crack on -hopefully nothing will happen early.
When it comes to babies and dressing them I remember one phrase my cousin told me (mother of 3, daughter of 2 GPs) 'Too cold they let you know, too hot they die'. It sounds alarmist but it stuck in my head and in retrospect seems quite sensible.

teabelly · 19/04/2005 09:37

LOL KVG - no I think you were maybe right the second time!!!

Trib - WOOHOO on the job - fantastic news - big relief eh!

Berolina - hmmmm not sure what to suggest - as someone else said, could your doctor not maybe sign you off for a week's rest?? Would this impact on the stuff you have to do, as in will you have to do an extra week or go back a week earlier if you did this? if not then maybe this would be the way to go, and still preserve your official maternity leave?? Sorry can't think of anything else...

Pink - besides poundstretcher there is also Matalan, Primark, Ethel Austin and my all time fav. H&M that do fabulously cheap baby clothes/paraphanelia (sp?) Not sure if you have any of these close by but best quality is H&M then Primark and so so cheap, and great little styles too...ooh and Asda too Quite agree Mothercare is hideously expensive...only ever buy stuff from there in the sales myself

Re summer babes and bedtime...ds was a june baby and we mostly had him in vests/bodysuits in the day and then at night times he had either a babygrow or a vest under a 0.5tog (summer weight) grobag. The 2.5 tog is for winter I think. But one of these long nighties Uwila and Lippy mention would be great instead of a grobag. To see if bubs is to hot you're told to feel their chest or back, and if this is clammy they're too hot. HTH

Lippy - I'm in a punchy mood lately (what with one thing and another) so if your builders give you any agro send them my way!!

Charley - yeah, where are you planning to go? I'm getting very at the thought of a nice beachy holiday...somehow I don't think North Devon will compare, he he he!

Lummox - good luck with your form filling - these things are supposed to be easy to do...not!!

Cobweb - I understand about the temporary housing offered - we had temp council housing when I was younger and it was rank then! Would you get any kind of housing benefit/rent rebate in the short term if you took a private let?? Some councils are happy to do this if they're short of actual council properties. Or else it may be worth seeing if there are any housing organisations (non council) locally who could help, my sister had one such place when she first had her eldest dd.

Well I suppose I'd better get down to some real work...well look at my emails anyway! ...catch you later, x

teabelly · 19/04/2005 09:39

ahhhhhh - '...too hot they die...' - I'd have kept ds permenantly 1/2 cold if I'd have been told that!!

LipstickMum · 19/04/2005 09:41

Trib big congratulations on the new job, I can't remember if I said it before, have been so wrapped up in me, me, me

Welshie, they are! They are! I go in and watch her sleeping at least 3 or 4 times before I go to bed

About the warmth at night. We had a temp gauge on the monitor, most do, which gave us an idea of the room temp. The best way to check baby's temp is to put your hand under the blanket or sheet and feel their chest as KVG said. We also went by Welshie's theory of 'too cold, too hot'.

Dd slept with just a doubled over cotton sheet in the summer when it was boiling, or a single layer cellular blanket. These are all different 'tog' ratings, I was surprised how little (or it seemed to me) covering was enough for a baby! For grobags, you generally need winter and summer ones as they are obviously different thicknesses. We have 3, and are lucky that this baby will be the same age as dd for the same gro-bag, so we wont need to buy different ones iykwim. They aren't cheap if you buy them brand new, but we have found ours to be absolutely invaluable !!! Especially the travel one, with a zip at the back to allow a 5-point harness to go through. It means they can wear them in the car seat or buggy.

Gro-bags are great for wriggly babies and for taking the stress out of "what tog do I need? What are togs??!!"

About those nighties, I didn't use it instead of a gro-bag or blanket, used it more instead of a babygro. Sorry, Tea, just wanted to avoid confusion with all this tog stuff flying around And they are great.

LipstickMum · 19/04/2005 09:45

KVG, I was constantly checking the cot, it's pretty 'normal' It's great watching them sleep, made my tummy flip they are so cute, it still does with dd

Yes yes Lippy - I meant instead of a babygro, doh!

KVG - if your dd is anything like my ds was you won't need to worry about checking on him, he snored and snuffled so loudly we put him in his own room much earlier than anticipated just so that we could sleep!!!

teabelly · 19/04/2005 09:54

KVG - sorry to get you confused! Baby gro is the longsleeved, long legged clothing item most babies live in for the first 3 mths, grobag is the (generic name) for the (usually sleeveless) sleeping bag (quilt like padding) that you use instead of blankets to put a baby to sleep in.

Ha ha ha - snore yes, and very loudly too for something so small

MrsWednesday · 19/04/2005 10:09

Ooh yes, my DS was a very noisy sleeper. Worse than DH actually.

Congratulations on your new job Trib!!!! So pleased another Junie will be moving to Leeds . I think you said you'd been to university in Leeds, so you'll probably be fine, but if you need a hand with any Leeds info, let me know. Great news about your new nephew too.

I feel a list coming on...really must start thinking about this little baby and what it needs. I feel hopelessly disorganised.

Berolina, what a dilemma. The only thing I would say is that your health and the baby's health is more important than anything else, so perhaps if you could even just take a week off sick now (do you get paid for being off sick?) it might be better. Have you got a PC at home? Because you could always spend your days on here when you're off!

Feeling much more perky today after a good night's sleep (only 4 loo visits, so not too bad ).

Ha ha ha KVG - that's what I was like in the last pg (and this one come to that), and that's how my labour started - thought I'd wet myself in my sleep, but it kept dribbling then discovered that it was my waters - took me by surprise coz until then I thought they always went with a great big gush!!
