Yep, Chester zoo is the one we usually go to. DD absolutely loves it. This saturday wasn't too packed. The reason being that it was tad in the cold size, but not enough to ruin the day.... They also have fabulous flower displays which may appease to the little botanist in your DD....

Mrs. W we are extending our leaving room and removing a chimney breast column from top to bottom. The latter is the one I am mostly conserned about it because I imagine will be really noisy and dusty inside the house. They estimate a week from start to finish, which doesn't sound too bad. But, I forgot to think about the poor pets that will have to stay in the house ! None of them are outdoor pets, so it shall be rough on them, specially the cats.
BTW, here is a question for Charle "animal lover" pops.... What would be less cruel to cats. To move them to a cattary for a few days or to have them in a building site????

teabelly · 18/04/2005 16:54

Welshie - I only get that kind of back pain when I sleep in an awkward position or have been overdoing the lifting - then I find deepheat a godsend...not sure if you can use it in pg?? Although I did last time when assembling ds's cotbed (couldn't wait for dh to come home) and put my back out then at 30 weeks

Getting lots of feet in my ribs though...and lots of hand movements in places that have no reason to be feeling little hands!! - especially after a muller rice, wasn't sure if she likes them or not, but each time I eat one she has what can only be described as a breakdancing assault on my pelvic floor

charleypops · 18/04/2005 17:05

Thanks all for explaining the vest/bodysuit thing

Katz - you must be able to get sponsorship for something like that??

Lua - I think I'd pop them in a nice cattery, I'm sure they'll be fine if they can go together. The best ones are those that don't also board dogs as the barking can freak them out, but if you trust one that does take dogs, that's better than one you don't know. What other pets do you have?

charleypops · 18/04/2005 17:07

I'm sure I'm having an octopus - I get hand and feet movements absolutely everywhere! His head sometimes is on the left, sometimes on the right, and sometimes it just seems to disappear. He's still breech though the naughty thing.

PinkArjuna · 18/04/2005 17:25

Sweetheart - welcome back good luck and I have fingers toes arms and legs crossed for you

I did wake up in a better mood today till I got outside and found my car had a flat battery The little light thingy that is attached to the doors stayed on all by itself Well the RAC man didn't take that long to come and told me to get another battery as it won't last that long seeing as I ran it down flat and its about due for a change anyway.

So I went to quick fit waited 40 minutes after doing an exam at college. Only for the rather oily looking repair man to tell me they didn't have those batteries in stock

Well I am so tired, I went to marks and spensers and bought loads of really nice fruit so I'm going to sit around eating strawberries for the next hour - seems to solve all problems they had an offer on

Uwila - is it usual for poo in the bath?? I expect poo in the nappy and projectile pee in the face but never thought about poo in the bath Good thing you let DH rescue the damsel in distress

Charley - I heard it is pretty much a waste of money buying too many outfits as they'll spend most of the time in those body suit vesty thingies, And just grow out of the clothes really fast. I have a few outfits but I got them on ebay and the people I had bought them off had barely worn them. I also had about a gazillion vests body/sleep suits. I did want to get some 'cut for cloth' ones but they are so expensive. Pound stretcher does the body/sleep suits really cheap and I figure once Bubba has outgrown this lot I'll get them from there as they'll be out grown too fast to get that much wear.

Poundstretcher also does those cute hooded towels for £3 which I have got a few of. They are usually really expensive. Though I was tempted to get a cute disney one, Though I am sure only I would appreciate it.

I literally haven't bought anything in mothercare as the are the most expensive shop around for the basics.

No bad dreams last night I'm glad I'm not the only one getting them.

KVG - Is that Lauryn slater who wrote the prozac diary? If it is I read that. Did she have a baby? obviously if its the same woman

I hope I am not illegally found eating strawberries in the computor lab I have juice on the keyboard

I've been looking at Maclaren pushcairs. I am absolutely sure I will trade in my travel system for one of those after a few months. I tried lifting the system yesterday and decided I'll have to get a bike lock because I won't be able to carry it up the stairs. The estate agents still haven't done the post box I have it sitting waiting for them to do. Thats for reminding me I'll harrass them again tomorrow.

The neighbours don't seem to be in much lately. Its been peaceful and all my mail arrives...

berolina · 18/04/2005 17:44

Hi all!
Congratulations Sweetheart!
Pink - glad you're feeling a bit better.
Well, managed to trip over literally nothing and fall today... in the corridor in front of a group of students . Fell on my knees though, so no damage done.
Was at the dr this afternoon for routine appt. The good news - I'm GBS -ve. The bad (or baddish) news - my cervix has started to shorten again. Dr could feel baby's head pressing down on it. I'm 33+5 today so a bit early for a 1st pregnancy. The good news on this is that baby is well developed and weighs approx 2.5 kg (about 5.5 lb apparently) and dr reckons it wouldn't be the end of the world if he did come soon. (BTW, does this weight now mean he'll be big if he does go to term? I'm tiny!) However, the longer he's in the better, n'est-ce pas? Dr reckons I should spend as much time lying down (or half lying with feet up) as I can, which sort of increases the work dilemma. Do I stop or don't I? Plus my boss is asking me to do something extra AGAIN and I'm beginning to get a bit p*d off - had a cry about it last night as I don't really 'want' to stop (as I explained, I want the time with babs later - and I'm actually not entirely keen on the thought of sitting/lying around all the time waiting for something to happen - we haven't lived here very long and I don't really have anyone who can visit me, and if I can't potter around shopping or getting stuff sorted then I'm a bit stuck) but am terrified of something bad happening to baby if I do carry on. I was wondering whether to ask work if they could give me something I can at least half lie on for my classes, and if they can't maybe stop after this week? Ohhhh bgger, I really don't know what to do.

lummox · 18/04/2005 17:47

Hi all,

Have just had a v frustrating day trying to fill out a form to get Maternity Allowance (the thing you get if not entitled to SMP - hopefully). Wonder if giving birth will be as challenging as trying to fill out forms for maternity pay!

Teabelly - thanks fo replying to it - will try again with Mat Alliance tomorrow.

Charleypops - the bugaboo is red. Very, very red. We couldn't resist. DH wanted the orange one, but it wasn't in stock. Havent got that many accesories, but do have a very cheap car!

Uwila - am getting the feeling that stories about poo are going to play an increasingly large role in our lives. Glad to be getting in early!

Hope everyone else feeling OK in the circs. Keep telling myself that most people go for another baby after their first so the preggie bit must be worth it (unless there is some sort of sinister automatic forgetting mechanism......)

berolina · 18/04/2005 17:47

(Just had visions of myself stretched out on a gym mat on a table giving my classes )

lummox · 18/04/2005 17:49

Berolina - sorry. Posts crossed. Are you getting any advice from mwife/dr on how late you should be working? Does the cervix shortening mean junior is likely to make an early appearance?

PinkArjuna · 18/04/2005 17:51

5.5 pounds Berloina! wow I don't think it could be too bad a thing being a bit early (not that I know anything about it but it'll just keep growing right?). I dunno, Bubba seems to be growing at a rate of knots with me too. He wasn't that big but now is so huge I get into painful space arrangements with him lately. He is awkward as hell. He gets his fists into the smallest spaces and it really hurts.

I should take it easy though. its getting on so far now. At least put your foot down about extra things at work. People have no decency when it comes to pregnancy - they think oh well everyone does it... but its such a strain on the body.

PinkArjuna · 18/04/2005 17:58

Uwila - is the drawstring at the bottom of the night gown? are there leg holes?

charleypops · 18/04/2005 18:06

Hi Pink - glad you're feeling better Shame your day was spoilt with a flat battery. Always nice to get a new one though. Think I'll just get a few vests to add to my 16 babygrows then clothes should be sorted.

Well done Berolina for being GBS -ve. Did your doctor advise you on what to do regarding work/maternity leave? I can understand your dilemma. I think you should explain at least some of the situation to your boss so s/he stops giving you extra work. I think I'd think about finishing a bit earlier you know.

Lummox - nobody's going to bump into your pushchair are they??

berolina · 18/04/2005 18:14

Lummox, Charley - my dr is recommending I stop and more or less lie down or half lie down most of the time in order to hang on a bit longer (yup, it's looking increasingly likely I won't go quite to term). On the other hand, he says it wouldn't be a tragedy if baby did put in an appearance soonish, because he's well developed and one would expect the lungs to be able to function by themselves by now. He said basically what I do depends on whether I fancy risking going into labour in front of my students . Maybe the thought is at the back of his head that given my size and pelvis problems it might not be awful if baby didn't get too huge before the birth.

berolina · 18/04/2005 18:15

I might finish at 37 weeks (assuming I get that far) because there is a week's break in the middle of May anyway, i.e. just not go back after that.

lummox · 18/04/2005 18:29

charley - that's the plan. we'll be living in the country, so persuaded ourselves that red would be sensible.....

(rather than just what we wanted because we are big kids)

wow, berolina - looks like you might be the first of us. how exciting.

clairesimpson · 18/04/2005 18:56

Hi

Thanks Berolina for getting me on the right thread!!

Sorry to go over old ground with regards the Jane Matrix car seat but I'm still confused. I really want to buy one because of the "lie flat mechanism". I've seen several threads on Mumsnet, including this one, which mentions the Matrix being a Best Buy in the latest Which report. The Jane website itself states its a Which best buy. However, I'm a Which subscriber and the latest car seat trial (updated April 2005) has no mention of the Matrix and has repeated its warning about how dangerous Carrycot style car seats are mentioning the M&P Navetta and Bebecar carrycot tracker.

CharleyPops - could you tell me where you got the info on this seat being a Which best buy?

Thanks!!

Hi Claire! The reason there's no new Which report is because there's been no new designing of the the Matrix, so there was no point in re-assessing it apparently. It is not really a carrycot, although you can use it as one - it's a carseat - you can get an actual Jane carrycot with the travel system which is where people get confused. I wouldn't use this in the car though personally. I think it was Lipstickmum who told me about the Which report thingy. Have a look here for some more info.

Evening all, just a very quicky. Wanted to say a huge congratulations first of all to Sweetheart, brilliant news.

My nephew was absolutely gorgeous, and has really come on even just in the week since he arrived chez bro. He was lively and happy, even with complete strangers (i.e. me, dh, my grandparents) and basically delightful.

Oh yes, and I found on the way home that I have been offered the job in Leeds! So all in all, a very good day!

Will catch up properly, I hope! Take care all. xx

uwila · 18/04/2005 19:25

The drawstring is at the bottom of the nightgown. Here is a pic of one at The Gap, but it just has elastic. I like the drawstring better because you can close it up more so baby doesn't kick his/her legs out and get cold (not that that is going to be abig issue in June/July).

Anyway, look here:

berolina · 18/04/2005 19:33

Trib
Congrats on new job and gorgeous nephew!!!

LipstickMum · 18/04/2005 19:36

Hi everyone

Berolina, what a dilema It must be very frustrating when work are unsympathetic to one's medical/pregnancy needs. Not sure what to suggest [wrinkled brow] Sign yourself off for a week, or however long you are allowed to..??

Pink, Glad fruit is making you feel cheerier, M&S is a lifesaver for decent fruit Fingers crossed the post box will arrive before too long!

Lua, I've been to Chester zoo too!! I have a friend who lives very close to it (walking distance) and we were there last Oct, it was great, massive too!

Good luck with the builders!!! Ours have generally been excellent, insofar as quality of work goes, I have no complaints. Just a couple of minor niggles which have been exacerbated by the pregnancy deadline They show up at 8am, I leave the door on the latch for them as they are usually waiting in the van outside at least 10 mins before and let them get on with it! It is very dusty, but as our work is at the top of the house it doesn't impact too much on daily life. Yours will though wont it? AS for the pets, I have no advice, can you keep them in one part of the house? Cattery would be good, but not for 6+ weeks I should imagine!

Clothes wise, I agree with everyone else When dd was born it was boiling and she wore vests of one type or another and not much else, it was a hot summer. Those long nighties Uwila mentioned are good as she said for nightime changes, no messing with poppers. They are just a long nightie that goes over the feet, some have elastic at the end to keep feet 'enclosed' so to speak.

Charley, don't be afraid to travel with Pod, before they are moving is the best time. We took dd to the Caribbean when she was 5 months old and it was no problem for her. We did have a/c though, a must. I would make sure Pod is still taking breastmilk, but also drinks milk from a bottle and fluids from a cup. Just so he wont get dehydrated and spend all the time on your boob. I'm not sure how likely it is that he will actually dehydrate, but if his only source of fluid is from you, then it could be quite draining for you iykwim.

Don't expect to do too much either, we barely left the poolside during the day, except for some early or late strolls along the beach when it was cooler. FOrtunately, both were only about 5 metres away from our hotel door! Oh, and have fun!!

Dd is wide awake, singing really loudly, having been in bed for about 40 mins! Think I might go up and get her for a sneaky extra cuddle, she can see Dad when he comes in too Anyone else do this naughty parenting practice???

LipstickMum · 18/04/2005 19:40

Trib, congratulations!!!

Hi Claire, I do have the Which? report, not sure I read it though, I shall dig it out. Charley has more up to date info as she is doing it (having a baby) for the 1st time, and I am a lazy second timer digging out dd's old gear

Lua · 18/04/2005 20:40

Trib, that's great news! Congrats on the job and nephew!!! So, I assume you going to take the job?

Berolina - I don't want to make you worried and I am no doctor, so you shouldn't listen to me! But I do wonder where your doctor is getting his info from.... As far as I know, the only way to really evaluate whether the lungs are mature is by doing an amnio... and as far as size, even with scans people say is not that reliable. I'm sure given you are over 30 weeks that baby will be OK if it comes early, but I really think you'd rather keep it in at least until 36 or 37 weeks. Believe me, most of the time I'm quite ready for my little rugby player to get out; but if I were you I'd try and take it easy at least for a few weeks... You can always go back to overdrive after 36 weeks to helps things come along!

Lua · 18/04/2005 20:42

Lippy - Thanks for the info! I'll just have to go into denial about the mess and trust they would do the chimney breast in a week!
