KT1983 · 25/02/2009 11:00

Thanks lbb & herb il give some of those ideas a go. Alot of the time she just falls fast asleep when i try to wind her. Sometimes she will go back to sleep without bringing any wind up - is that ok? Or do you have to get something up?

I just had a visit from the midwife support person who helped me bath Poppy, not as scary as I thought!
I asked her about the mucus thing & she said it was quite common with newborns, and that it would clear in time.

McDreamy · 25/02/2009 11:00

Just got back from the GP's and I can drive!!!! Yay Getting cabin fever big time although not planning any heroic journeys yet, the school run will be good enough!

Questionid I am nearly 3 weeks cs. Scar isn't painful, I haven't had any pain killers for more than a week now although I know it's there IYKWIM. I can jump, hop etc so I think an emergency stop would be fine. GP agreed.

Had a much better night with Abi last night. She woke 3 hourly fed and settled back to sleep, I feel much better today.

Calico hope Lilian has put enough weight on today to keep you out of hospital. If there's anything I can do to help just shout. I'm not sure how far away I am from you but I don't think it's far.

laidbackinengland · 25/02/2009 11:09

KT - I have never winded any of my babies ! No one told me that I had to with DS1 (and I didn't read any books) and so I carried on in blissful ignorance ..... so the answer to your question is , probably not ! (asks KT to sign disclaimer not to blame me when Poppy is crying at 2.00am with wind !) I also fed all my babies to sleep.

laidbackinengland · 25/02/2009 11:10

McD glad you can driveagain,

Herb, hope you get some decent sleep soon....

KT1983 · 25/02/2009 11:19

Laidback I didnt do it for the first 3 days! nobody told me or reminded me that I needed to be doing it.
I walked past another lady on the ward winding her baby so thought perhaps I should be doing it too!

I do think though, if I put her to bed & she was suffering, I would def know about it!

herbgarden · 25/02/2009 11:19

agree with laidback. DD doesn't always wind at night for eg...she just wants to sleep.... you do it for them so if she's happy to go without a burp don't worry about it.

MarkStretch · 25/02/2009 11:28

QK and Rosie- CS scar still sore to touch here, some parts of my belly feel wierdly numb yet really oversensitive if anything touches it. My trousers hurt halfway through the day. Have been walking a fair bit though and the only thing that seems to ache is my back and hips but I think that relaxant hormone takes a while to get out of your system. And I am still bleeding 3 weeks on. It's really pissing me off, I'm sure I didn't bleed for this long after DD's CS.

MarkStretch · 25/02/2009 11:28

Laidback, I love your children's names.

laidbackinengland · 25/02/2009 11:31

MarkStretch - thankyou ! Hopefully your bleeding will stop soon - mine stopepd exactly 3 weeks after I gave birth. I figure that I have bled longer this time as I have been busier.

herbgarden · 25/02/2009 11:43

MS I'm still bleeding on and off and I'm 5 week on Friday

littleboysblue · 25/02/2009 12:07

KT Ds1 would fall asleep without bringing up any wind, and I'd have been at it for ages and kind of thought how frustrated I'd be if someone spent close to an hour rubbing and patting my back so would give up. He got colic which was really bad, no one knows exactly what causes it but I think it they say it is linked to trapped wind. I think it's quite important to get it out.
I've gone against what everyone else says haven't I?
Ds1 was in so much pain for months with wind, colic then the reflux and it was heartbreaking watching him and knowing there was little I could do......Luke also seems a bit uncomfortable most of the time but I'm so worried about the colic and all that comes with that, there's not a chance I'm leaving him without a burp, but I can hear and feel it in him, if you can't with Poppy, maybe she doesn't need to like everyone else says, you'll know what to do anyway, trust your instincts.....mother knows best, it's true

Can't remember what I wanted to say now...... will be back later.

rosieposey · 25/02/2009 12:46

QK,MS and Laidback glad its not just me. I was wondering why my stomach was so painful after walking around - its definately better though as a week after i couldnt stay on my feet for more than half an hour although i tried and MS i know exactly what you mean about trousers hurting halfway through the day as i put on my pre preg jeans on
yesterday and as they are a bit tight it hurt my stomach. The scar itself is numb and doesnt hurt just the stomach. Glad to know the bleeding is normal too although 5 weeks Herb!

MrsY i was told iron levels should be above 12 too but that mine were normally 20 so had dropped quite a bit to 10 - just wondering how long it takes to get them back to normal if you are eating normally and not talking anything for it - like i said have ended up with really bad bloody piles and am literally scared to go to the loo now its so painful all because of the three pregaday i was taking.

Winding wise this might have been suggested already but i have always put lo over my shoulder sort of stretching him out so that he is as long as possible then patting him (fairly vigourously) and rubbing till he got his wind up. Also sometimes leaving it 5 mins after a feed and picking him up from the laying down postion where he has dozed off works a treat too. He can be a bit stubborn to wind but usually will. Just keeping my fingers crossed that he wont get colic as DD1 did and it was horrid.

dinkystinky · 25/02/2009 13:42

Rosie - lovely to see you on. Sorry to hear your wound is hurting, your iron levels are low (if you're trying to up through diet dried apricots are great source of iron I found last time round - also helps deal with the constipation ) and Milo is slow to put on weight; hope all becomes much better for you v soon.

LBB - sounds like an allergic reaction to the ABs from what you said; piriton or over counter antiallergy pills may help. Hopefully your GP will prescribe you something much more effective though. Sounds horrid -hope it goes away v soon. DONT have hot baths or showers as will irritate it more though if an allergic reaction - luke warm is the way to go...

Scubagroover - good luck.

Sorry Danny crying (so tired but wont sleep this afternoon) so must fly.

dinkystinky · 25/02/2009 17:03

Typical - finally get Danny off to sleep and now the little tike wont wake up and my boobs may well explode! Hmm.. pesky child...

So, back to where I left off...

KT - you dont need to wind every time; if Poppy isnt complaining, she generally doesnt have wind issues. And if she falls asleep, if she's suffering from wind, she'll wake up and cry. I try not to wind too much at night feeds (trying to help Danny differentiate between day and night - feed lying down at nights in bed, with lights down low and keep winding to a minimum - only wind if he's complaining when I lie him back down; given the rate he trumps at nights, I think he's found a way to deal with wind issues at night anyway ). I got told that one way you can tell a baby has wind is if you look at their lips when they feed (this works for BF babies, not so sure about bottle fed ones) - if their top lip is going whiteish it means they have some wind in there; it certainly rang true with DS1 and rings true with Danny..

littlesez · 25/02/2009 18:14

Well after starting in early labour on Friday middle of the night I finally gave birth to baby Isobella Rose on Monday at 10.25pm, she weighed 8lbs. I had a really rough time and not up for sharing at the mo, just really glad we're finally home now and both ok. Thanks for your thoughts ladies. So glad to join those with babies and hope everyone is ok, good luck to anyone else still waiting. xxx

Nkweto Thought i had sent a text to you but not sure if you got it, my brain was totally frazzled and i was sneaking a quick text when midwife shouted to turn my phone off!

pinkbabybump · 25/02/2009 18:26

Evening ladies, thank you for all your congratulations. Eleanor Catherine was born last Friday at 09.20 by elective c-section.
She weighed 6lbs 14oz and is absolutely gorgeous - I am so in love!!! . The section went really well and I was out of hospital on day 3, unfortunately I then started to get REALLY bad headaches and mentioned it to my midwife who immediately sent me back to hospital. It turned out that I had a leak in my spinal fluid caused by the spinal block which was draining all the fluid from my brain, hence the headache. I was offered a blood patch (blood taken from me and injected into the same spot that my spinal block was put in which would clot and seal the leak), but after a night in hospital and 6 hourly doses of codeine (sp)? I declined as I was managing the pain with the codeine and I was told that the leak would seal itself in 7-10 days anyway. So am now home with Ellie and loving every minute with her.
She is such a good baby, very content and cute! I will post some pictures of her on facebook as soon as I get a chance.
Am off to catch up with the rest of the thread now while Ellie is still asleep

katieblirdsnest · 25/02/2009 18:32

just a quick one to announce the arrival of our beautifuulo baby boy ivor, 8lbs 4oz born on his due date 24.02.09.

delivery went really well, 2nd stage took 4 minutes and it was a bit of a surprise to find him on my stomach so soon!

dd has had grandparents here so has been fine but i think will start to get a bit fed up with lack of attention when they've gone tomorrow.

hope everyone else is well, i'll catch up on posts soon.

nkweto · 25/02/2009 19:08

Wow.. lots of babies..

Congratulations Littlesez, Pinkbabybump ,Katieblirdnest and scubagroover Littlesez.. I havent replaced the sim I lost when in labour.. sorry , so I suspect the text went there.. many congratulations, but many hugs to you with such a long (hard)labour.. it goes without saying, but share as little or as much as you want... congratulations on your little girl. BEAUTIFUL name !!

Pinkbabybump draining fluid from your brain, is just about one of the scariest things i have heard !! lovely that you are sooo in love..

got to go do bedtime hour..

dinkystinky · 25/02/2009 19:23

Wow - talk about a mass delivery of babies. congratulations Katie, LittleSez and Pinkbabybump - great news that your little ones arrived safely and you've all picked lovely names too!

LittleSez - I'm so sorry you had a hard time of it (as you may have gathered from comments on the thread previously quite a few of us have been there with difficult first labours/labour experiences, so if you do want to unload, we're here for you); just enjoy having your beautiful little girl and take things easy until you recove.

Pinkbabybump - yikes, that fluid experience sounds really scary! Glad you're on the road to recovery now.

Katie - so pleased it was a quick second stage. Your little one was obviously very eager to make an appearance!

dinkystinky · 25/02/2009 19:40

P.s. I see from Newsockson labour thread in Childbirth that she had her second little boy yesterday - congrats Newsocks.

MrsY · 25/02/2009 19:56

Congrats to the new arrivals!!!

Quick newbie question re: warming feeds. We've always given her her bottle at room temperature, but reading above comments, suspect that is causing/contributing to the wind. To warm it, do we just stick it in a saucepan of warm (or hot?) water for a few minutes, shake it and then test it? And it should be the same temp as skin, is that about right?

dinkystinky · 25/02/2009 20:01

MrsY - when I switched to bottles for DS1's day feeds (as going back to work) that's what I did - I think it was 3 minutes in a flask of hot water and then shook it up and tested on my wrist (to ensure it just felt luke warm). I know friends who have used the microwave to warm bottles but I always worried about the hot spots. I bought a brilliant bottle warmer flask from Jojomamanbebe for when we or our nanny was out and about with DS1 so his bottles could be warmed whenever.

I also had friends with windy babies recommend Dr Brown's bottles to me when undergoing bottle battle with DS1. Apparently they're quite fiddly though (lots of bits to them) so if the warming milk and infacol/dentinox and winding lots does the trick, I'd stick with that....

herbgarden · 25/02/2009 20:23

Hi there
MrsY - I either use boiling water in a pot to warm the milk (add powder to cooled water and then warm) in the middle of the night (as I have a travel kettle upstairs so small and not too long to boil) or I do use the micro. I find that a 3oz bottle takes about 14/15 secs (850w micro) and then shake well to avoid hot spots but if you're nervous about this then the hot water method works just as well. I started with room temp water but as DD appeared to be a windy old thing, i decided warming was the way forward and I think it has helped. You'll get used to testing the "right" temp - but use your wrist as dinky says.

Incidentally I started off with Infacol (used with DS) but then she's had a couple of more gripey days so I switched to Dentinox (a friend swears by it and thought better than Infacol) But - DD possetted bits of her feed on and off after each feed on the Dentinox so much more so than with the Infacol that I've switched back again. If you decide to use one of these, buy one first see how you get on and if no change, try the other....it's a bit of trial and error.

I've also used the Dr Browns - they're more expensive, a bit leaky and I'm not convinced how good they are - but all these things are worth a try if your baby is suffering !! It's horrible

DD has gone down in her room propped up in her chair as she's so stuffed up - poor little thing - I'm hoping the cold is properly coming out now so that she gets over the worst of it soon. We all need some sleep tonight !

Wishing you all a restful night with your lo's (including those still safely tucked up inside) and at least a few hours sleep

herbgarden · 25/02/2009 20:34

Sorry, before I go to bed - a completely different question - what are you all wearing at the moment ??

I'm sooo bored of not being able to get in my normal clothes (have squeeeezed myself into a pair of jeans which have great lycra and give but the rest are languishing in the wardrobe) and pg clothes are boring and the trousers now just the wrong shape. I did buy one slightly larger pair of jeans for now but can't go on forever. Plus as my cs wound is still a bit sensitive I can't do too much squeezing into clothes as it plays havoc on the healing process.

Are you all investing in a new wardrobe?? or just waiting patiently til you can get in your old clothes?

I'm hating this bit !

dinkystinky · 25/02/2009 21:06

I'm wearing maternity clothes or sports gear Herbgarden (fortunately have loads of jogging trousers, tshirts and sweatshirts which are comfy and quite slobby so I dont mind getting them soaked in milk) - I've only got just under a stone to lose to get back to pre-baby weight so am hoping that I'll be back into my "fat clothes" towards the end of next month
