Congratulations Calico.

Good luck Rani.

Hope this is it for you Littlesez.

PinkTulips · 22/02/2009 10:59

it's now officially over a week of dealing with d&v and i am officially fed up

aaron was quiet as a mouse all night but has been cross all morning, and he doesn't seem to like my right boob anymore... cries when he gets milk in his mouth from that one

dp appears to have decided that he's somehow entitled to a lie in so am on my own again with a toddler spewing from both ends, dd doing her utmost to give me an anurism/nervous breakdown/migraine/all three and aaron who can't decide if he's windy or hungry and isn't happy about either.

good luck to rani and littlesez... hope you're both holding your lo's by the end of the day littlesez, rest! if it's labour it won't stop and you need your strength for later.

THOM.... they don't stay sleepy so enjoy it while it lasts ds1 started off really dozy too but once he woke up he never stopped!

is anyone elses baby still hanging onto the umbilical stump? aaron will be 2 weeks tomorrow and his is showing no signs of dropping, damn thing got caught in his clothes the other day and was bleeding it's driving me mad now as i really want to give him a proper bath, feel horrible sponge bathing him in our freezing cold house and it doesn't seem to make much inroads into getting him clean anyway. had to stop using the cotton nappies too as they were up too close to the stump so he's flying through 12 sposies a day which we can't afford and have to drive to the dump [vomit] as we have no rubbish collection.

LittleMissNorty · 22/02/2009 11:28

PT My DSs cord stayed on for 17 days and the MW wouldn?t discharge me until it had come off. She pulled it abouot a bit to help it along . He didn?t get a bath at all until then. Hope the D&V clears up soon?.we have got rid of DDs vomming but she still is having ?splatty? nappies a bit, although she is now eating again normally. We are keeping Tesco?s in profit in Alcohol gel!

Congratulations Calico?.lovely names?..glad you feel so positive about elective sections ? mine was great as well and I definitely made the right decision. My scar is still a little tender though 3 weeks on?.

Good luck Rani and LittleSez?. LBB ? bet DP wasn?t asleep?just pretending to be?..that?s what my DH does ?..Mind you, I have to say my DH is being great and really helping (just not during the night), letting me sleep during the day and helping with essential housework, and not worrying about non-essential stuff. I?ve just got out of a lovely long soak in the bath?.its just such a luxury to be able to reach my feet / legs properly again .

MrsY?I seem to be developing a little man that like to sleep with one of us, but couldn?t agree more with LBB?..DD has always settled herself and I?m very keen that DS does as well. Am very torn between not making a rod for my own back and making the most of the cuddles as there will be no more babies for me.

My house is so peaceful atm?.both DCs asleep, me on laptop, DH on PC (and loads to do?.but just chillin out )

herbgarden · 22/02/2009 11:30

Congratulations Calico - A boy and a girl, how lovely and a lovely name.

Take it easy these first couple of weeks if you can. I tried to carry on as normal doing washing, clearing up, running after DS but I think I needed to be a bit more firm with DH and make him take toddler off my hands and should have lounged in bed with DD a bit more........I didn't realise till about week 4 how weak I'd really felt...

DD's Umbilical stump was on til about end of week 2/3 and it was hanging on by a bit of green looking snot the width of a piece of cotton so we actually just snipped the snot with scissors and thank goodness it then just cleared up.

PT you poor thing - get your DP out of bed !!!.....you'll wear yourself out - it can't be easy with poorly kids either.

HOM - we had the sleepy newborn here - she literally went from sleep to feed to sleep and might open her eyes for, um, 5 mins a day. This went on for about 3 weeks. She is now onto about 45 mins - an hour of encouraged wakefulness after feeding and before the next nap so that she might start to work out night from day. DS was sleepy but really not this sleepy.

Just got back from a night at my mum and dads and my mum fed DD through the night - so that I could get some kip. I went off at about 9.30pm and then was awake about 5.30am when I could hear DD screaming for her second feed. But at least I was in my bed all night with no disturbances !!! Hurray.

We've my sil and bil coming for this afternoon and for dinner. Not that keen on sil (DH's sis and he's in agreement about her irritating ways) but, hey, we can't choose our family and they don't have kids so she'll entertain DS - her husband is lovely (heaven knows what he sees in her.....[mean evil emoticon]) Dh is cooking too so I'm going to cuddle DD on the sofa.

Catch up later.

littlesez · 22/02/2009 12:05

nothing much going on, midwife thinks it will be tomorrow now, contractions have gone all over the place again. She says that i am in early labour but got a long way to go.

Congratulations Calico xx

PinkTulips · 22/02/2009 12:48

phew.

dp crawled out and brought dd with him to the shop in search of painkillers (for what i could care less tbh, if he has a headache he bloody well deserves it) and ds1 has stopped puking and is snuggled on the couch watching tv. aaron has settled and dd has just come running bcak in with a wierd purple toy she won at the shop in one of those machines to cheer ds1 up [awwww]

my dad is supposed to be calling later so today might not be too bad after all.

littlesez, sorry it's a stop start labour for you.... my first was like that (and second wasn't much better) so i really feel for you right now. i did find nipple twiddling whenever i had a contraction really helped to strengthen them. another good one is to move your hips in a figure of eight pattern while standing with your feet slightly apart to help drop baby down and stretch your cerix a bit. squatting also great for this but not as easy to do for long periods.

herbgarden · 22/02/2009 13:25

Forgot I was going to say something to MrsY too....me again re babies and sleeping....

DS was a nightmare in the evenings from about weeks 5 - 9 to get down and he would scream and scream until picked up and then he'd go all limp and cosy and snuggle up. We'd end up bringing him downstairs with us and hold him til he calmed down. It's a classic time in the evenings for "colicky" screaming from newborns. In the end I found it so exhausting as DH doesn't get in til 7.30/8.30 that I'd either have him lying in a moses basket downstairs with a dummy in (so that I didn't have to run up and downstairs putting it in so I could potter round)or I'd sit by his cot with him with dummy in and then come down when he eventually spat it out and had gone off. It was quite wearing "wearing" baby each night after a while which is why I chose those options !!.. I'd weaned DS off the dummy by week 13/14 and he then settled in his cot for naps/sleeps when I was at home fine or we'd be out in the buggy/car seat. He sucked his thumb then so had another comforter (and still does).

I suppose what I'm saying is that if cuddling Merry works for you all evening then do it, but I know I found it quite exhausting particularly as you're then up with them in the night. If you can find something which works for you where you get a bit of a break, do that and don't worry about any associations at this stage - you can crack these things later. By 14/15 weeks, apart from the odd night, DS would go down to bed and do naps fine...I remember I just decided to go cold turkey with things when I knew he was a bit further along and wasn't hungry, windy blahdy blah.

One thing I have found this time with DD which looking back with DS I wish I'd have known, is that sometimes I think he was up too long and I should have put him to nap during the day /evening bed earlier than I did. If you miss that window of opportunity sometimes it can be a nightmare to settle them. Sometimes I've popped DD in her cot at a time I think is a bit early, and she's gone off without a murmur and other times I've been distracted, realised she's squawking and then she's been harder to settle. She nearly always cries for a few minutes and sometimes on and off for longer...but I don't panic about that either in the way that I did with DS (although he could have tried the patience of a saint !)

So, that's my own experience but all babies are different. Try out a few things and see what suits you - it is such trial and error this baby lark !

Byee !

dinkystinky · 22/02/2009 14:42

Calico - congratulations on the arrival of Lilian (lovely name) but so sorry to hear DS is ill and had to go to hospital - I hope he will be ok.

PinkTulips - glad things have settled down abit for you at home; sounds like it was horribly hectic earlier!

Rani - hope labour is progressing well for you. Look forward to hearing your news.

LittleSez - I had 2 days of early labour as you described before being induced with DS1 (and was already at 2 cm so the early labour was doing something). What I'd say is try and relax where you can and eat little and often to keep your blood sugar levels up - lie on sofa and watch comedy dvd, try and have short naps (as is a classic first labour thing to do too much in early labour and then be too tired to give birth when you're in active labour) have a short walk (not so long as to exhaust you but enough to mobilise you and let gravity help - I was stomping 6 miles a day up and down hampstead heath and highgate when I was overdue with DS1 and in hindsight, I should probably have walked abit less and chilled out abit more). I think you've got homeopathic remedies - take a look at the advice you got with it to see if the clary sage (which can strengthen contractions) might be of use to you in an oil burner or a few drops in the bath. It is starting to happen for you - just try and ignore it and hopefully it'll happen quicker and smoother for you. Look forward to hearing your news.

So no news from Catstar and Lardy yet?

Another hard night with DS2 last night - awake every 2 hours and taking over 40 minutes to feed (I have a fast let down so should only take around 20 minutes if his mind is on the job), let alone wind. He only really sleeps well at night if snuggled up to me too so DH has been banished to the back bedroom, where he cant hear the baby or DS1 (who appeared to be having nightmares last night, poor boy). Have swaddled him for his current nap in a cellular blanket and he's slept for over 3 hours - go figure! DH is now changing his nappy which is waking him up so hopefully will get to feed him before my boobs explode!

laidbackinengland · 22/02/2009 14:51

Grrr, Mabel has chicken pox. They started coming yesterday evening and she has about 10 over her back and tummy and one behind her ear. She doesn't seem to be grumpy with it, luckily, so hopefully just a mild dose.

My poor DS2 looks like a currant bun - he is so covered in the blessed things . I am hoping today will be the worst of it and that tomorrow he will feel a bit brighter.

Littlesez, I hope things start for you again soon.

Congrats to Lilian (I'm loving old lady names

PT - I am feeling your frustration of ill kids .

Dinky - can you sleep while you feed your little chap ?

littleboysblue · 22/02/2009 15:12

calico Congratulations!!!!! Glad all went well
littlesez REST REST REST. As much as you may want to run up and down the stairs, you will need all your strength for the active part of labour and all the joys that come after.....go to sleep if you can as ou won't be doing much of that anymore!
Hopefully it's all really going for you now though
PT I'm having the same here with dp thinking he deserves a lay in. Men.
You can give Aaron a bath with the stump on, just make sure you dry it properly. I haven't giv en Luke a bath as the last bit of scab has just come away so am doing it tonight.
LMN fancy swapping men for a while?
Dp has been good at some times so shouldn't really knock him, just pisses me off when I'm dealing with 2 at same time while he sleeps, or pretends too, you're right there! And so what if he's got to go to work tomorrow? I'll be at home alone with 2 babies, plus trying to keep on top of housework and doing shopping and all the other bits that come with being a domestic engineer housewife!
littlesez Just read your more recent post, ffs if it's still on and off and not doing much, you bertter be laying down and resting.......or else........
dinky hope you have a better night tonight, you must be exhausted!

Luke ended up staying in living room with us last night because my neighbour came over just before I was gonna start the bedtime business with him. I would have told anyone else to do one, but I'm feeling a bit sorry for her, she's coming over every other day and keeps telling me how she doesn't know anyone here (Ashford, she's from Essex) so doesn't have any friends to talk too, she's livimg with her boyf and his mum and I think they are driving her slowly insane!
So I didn't have my glass of wine (feel awful drinking when they are in same room, don't knows why coz I've had Jacob with me in a pub and I've had 3!! )
Gonna bath Luke tonight and try to get him to settle in bedroom so I can have a few hours completely child free! herb you're right though, it won't hurt at this stage if he comes back in living room or whatever an hour later, worth a go, he might really suprise me. But by week 12/13 I def want there to be some sort of routine as think he'd be able to respond then, but it is definately easier the earlier it's started IMO.

littleboysblue · 22/02/2009 15:15

laidback How awful about the cpox. Hope Mabel stays calm with it and your ds shows improvement tomorrow. I remember when me and my brother had it, we were about 4 and 6 I think. My parents let us sleep on made up beds downstairs because it wasn't so warm down there so we didn't get quite as itchy iyswim.

TheMadHouse · 22/02/2009 16:22

has any one heard from Coco yet?

Neeerly3 · 22/02/2009 17:02

well i can't remember what my last post was or even which way is up....but, I have a new little baby boy!

Early Friday morning (12.34am) Charlie was born weighing 7lb 8oz. I will write my birth story as soon as I can remember it, was all a bit of a blur. I have several stitches but they pale into insignificance compared to my Grade 4 piles! I am VERY uncomfortable and on a cocktail of pain killers, creams and laxatives. Still not had a bowel movement and hoping I never do!

Charlie is a little treasure, seems to be feeding well but I think I can empathise with someone else on here, has issues with my right boob....roots like mad, latches then comes off. Stick him on my left off he goes for 20 mins! Needless to say my left boob is now very sore.

Can someone add me to the popped list, I must go and grab some shut eye while my mum is watching the twins!

ranirani · 22/02/2009 17:08

great news, calico, well done on producing a baby
well, my story is different. Contractions went up to 10 mins and then 20 mins apart at night time, then i woke up at 3 30 in the morning and they were getting stronger and closer so could not sleep at all. waited another 2 hours, they got to 6 mins apart and 45 sec each.
Luckily I have this tens machine which is doing wonders.
called the hospital they said: come in; by the time got everything ready it was 9 am when we truned up there, and guess what: silly contractions all of sudden decided from 5 mins apart to go to 10 and then 15 mins apart. was on monitor for ages, because baby was going nuts for some reason. MF examined me - 1 cm only, she did a sweep, sent me home. Said come back when they are 5 mins apart. Have been home for few hours alreday, contractions 9-10 mins apart, tried to lseep , could manage 1 hour only because someone decided to call me on the phone, and now- no rest, no idea when these contractions are gonna get closer, how long is it gonna take, and will I be able to take it- so bloody painful , even with tens machine on , but most of all no sleep!!
when I was in the hopsital couple of women got there with 3-4 cm dilated, they asked for epidural, but mfs were taking ages to check them and transfer them to the delivery rooms..... i just wonder when my time comes, how long will it take them to give me that bloody epidural!!
sorry for moaning................

ranirani · 22/02/2009 17:09

bumping for you, lardybump, not a nice surprise with this tens machine thingy....
how are you progressing anyway?

ranirani · 22/02/2009 17:23

any news, littlesez?

dinkystinky · 22/02/2009 17:29

RaniRani - sorry to hear its slow progress; it is often that way with first labours. Try and ge.Get some rest - have a bath (dont worry if it dulls the contractions - they'll come back) and grab some shut eye (just dozing will help). It is common for contractions to go off the boil when you go to hospital (especially if you're in early labour) as the excitement o going in and anticipation causes adrenaline to flow, which inhibits oxytocin (the hormone you need for the ctx to be effective) and contractions slow down etc. You can try nipple twiddling (which can kick start them again) or more likely its your body's way of telling you that it needs a bit more time and a bit more rest - so chill out while you can. Believe me, I know, I was exactly like you with DS1's birth (as I said, I was in your early labour situation for 2 days!). Make sure you eat while you can (when you're in active labour you wont want to eat - and believe me you'll know when you're in active labour).

Dont fixate on the epidural (again, will raise the adrenaline levels) - just try and breathe (or vocalise if you need to) through contractions and you'll be amazed at how well you'll cope until the epidural becomes available.

Neerly - huge congratulations on the arrival of Charlie, am delighted for you! Hope you get a lovely nap in. Though Grade 4 piles - ouch ; not a pleasant surprise!

Laidback - so sorry to hear Mabel has the pox too; god, they're falling like dominoes in your house. Hope it stays a mild case and she's much better soon. Sending you much needed hugs. Thanks for suggesting I sleep while Danny feeds at night - unfortunately with my quick let down (and lying down feeding) he has a bit of a tendency to choke so I need to be alert to sit him up and help him recover. He also likes bobbing on and off (due to the quick let down I think) so I need to stay vigilant to stop spraying him with milk up his nose (which of course causes more choking). It was the same with his big brother - though from memory DS1 figured out how to deal with the quick let down by 6 weeks, so am hoping DS2 will too!

dinkystinky · 22/02/2009 18:06

News just in from Catstar - text reads "Just wanted to let you know that Samuel James was born at 6.25am today weighing 9 lb 1 oz. Anothre long labour but we hope 2 go home 2moro once feeding gets sorted!"

Huge congratulations Catstar - brilliant names and a lovely sized little man you've produced there

nkweto · 22/02/2009 18:07

Calico and Neerly- CONGRATULATIONS and well done.. !! great news to hear...

Littlesez and Rani.. what the others said.. rest, rest, rest..and lots of good luck and labour vibes your way...

Laidback sorry to hear about cpox.. I have a real fear of it as i did not have it as a child, but am not immune to it .. and know that the likelyhood is i will have it with the kids...as this is what happened to my brother.. not nice at all

Llb and Herb very impressed with your routines.. DS has pretty much stuck to his toddler routine.. tea, bath and bed at 6.30 - 7.30 nap at 12 - 2..but DD stays with us pretty much all the time in the moses basket, she seems to know when i leave a room, even if i am sleeping and wakes up and start crying !!! I now go to bed before DH and DD and he holds her when she cries and then brings her to the bedroom when he comes to bed..

Dinky hope you have a more restful night tonight..by the way, i think keeping the nanny during maternity leave was a stroke of genius !!!!

Swampy i hear you have a mutual friend coming to meet jacob tomorrow ! she came to meet DD today ...

I am finding nights pretty hard going.. but think that DD is settling into a 3/4 hour gap between feeds which helps a lot..

...sorry if I have missed anything...i am a bit fuzzy today !

littleboysblue · 22/02/2009 18:26

rani sorry to hear it's not going to plan at the mo. Can I suggest that you call the labour ward now whilst you are at home, don't mention you are in the early stages of labour or anything and just say you've called because you want to find out their policy on epidurals. Some hospitals just don't like giving them. Once they have told you over the phone and regardless of what they say, give your name and your situation and demand that your wishes be met when you do arrive at the hospital.
When I was in having Luke, I got to the stage where I needed something more than Gas and air, asked for the epidural, this is how convo went
me "I'm in too much pai, you've got to give me something else"
mw "like what?"
me "like an epidural"
mw "there really isn't enpugh time, I can get some pethidine"
me "does this hospital have a problem with giving epidurals because it really isn't your choice or decision to make"
mw "no, there just isn't time"
me "you fucking liar, I was told that last time. Go and get me a fucking epidural"
mw "their all in theatre, they're doing an emergency CS"
me "I was told that last time too, GET ME A FUCKING EPIDURAL"
mw comes back a few mins later and says "they're on their way"
me "what happened to the emergency then?"

She was right though, there wasn't enough time and the epidural didn't work.....
Is this your first? Even if you were 4cm dilated if it's your first, that should still be plenty of time.
And like dinky says, it's really quite good to be able to concentrate on breathing. I also 'vocalised' through the worst bit and the mw kept yelling at me "Nicola, you are not pushing this baby out of your mouth, breath and PUSH" funny thinking back now, I can laugh 3 week on!

Catstar so pleased. Good weight too. Welcome Samuel

Right, I was just popping on for 5 mins before spending 2 hours bathing the baby's and now I'm running late before I've even started!!!!

Questionkid · 22/02/2009 20:47

Just quickly checking in to say hi and to say I'm still sane and managing!! Alexander is getting a bit more difficult (awake from 2am to 5 this morning, bit colicky, constantly hungry etc) but we're getting on ok. Unfortunately it looks like I've got an infection in my c-section wound though. I discovered a fairly big lump overnight and I'm generally sore. I saw the midwife today and she's said I have to see my GP first thing, so I'll be up there to get it sorted. I could do without it, I need to be on good form not dealing with an infection. Let's hope it's sorted easily with antibiotics. I'm now actually relieved I'm not bfeeding, i don't think I could've dealt with that too!!

Hope all's well with everyone.

laidbackinengland · 22/02/2009 20:54

QK - hope you get your wound sorted out, sounds painful .

Dinky - I have visions of you looking like some sort of milk fountain now !!

Well done catstar !

Nkweto - did you know you can be innoculated against chicken pox ? It is routine in the states now for children and also available here. My friend had it when she was planning to get pregnant as she works with kids and is regularly exposed to the virus; they were worried as it can be dangerous for the baby if the mum gets chickenpox when pregnant.

Am I really cruel for putting a 19 day old baby in a room on hisx own to go to bed?
I bathed him, which went really well, ds1 screamed so I was putting it off a bit, but I was clearly more confident doing it and Luke was fine, I don't even think he fully woke up until I started drying him!
I then fed him, winding happened quickly he fell asleep on my lap so I gently woke him, put him in his basket and quietly read him a few pages from a Winnie the Pooh book. I have checked on him every few mins and moved the monitor from ds1's room so it's in with baby and Luke hasn't even stirred! How good is that?! I do feel slightly guilty him being all alone, but he's asleep so it's not like he knows.......
Dp goes back to work tomorrow. Woo-hoo!!
I've got mw appointment tomoz, get this uterus business sorted, hopefully it's gone back as it should.

QK Goodluck with GP, hope wound gets treated and it's a simple one with just AB's

Congrats Calico - great name ! Sorry to hear about your DS, hope he is better soon.

lbb Thanks for the advice. We are trying not to hold her when she sleeps too much, but I feel bad because really all she does is sleep, so if I don't hold her then, when do I?

Congrts to Neerly3 Mentalpup and Catstar - three more boys.

THOM love the name. Do you know what it means? Is there a Welsh connection?

Good luck littlesez and rani. Ditto on the resting and eating in early labour. you may regret it if you don't.

Am very narked with John, as I just went to poor the water into her bottles for tonight to discover he had chucked the steriliser in the microwave as he found it, which considering we had used it to bring 5 bottles and a bottle cleaning brush home from his parents, was not how a steriliser was designed to be used. The cleaning brush has melted half the bottles/teats etc, so we will need a trip to Mothercare tomorrow .
