Ooo I feel all important now.

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
pluto · 16/02/2009 19:16

I'm home with my new little parcel Actually he's not little at all...

Albert David Magnus arrived at 11.36am on Friday, 13th February weighing in at 10lbs 10oz. You can call him Al, as Paul Simon says.

More tomorrow - right now I'm off for more cuddles.

lardybump · 16/02/2009 19:35

Congrats pluto well done.....

I am also getting period type pai..ns again.. i had them all last night then eased today now they are back..... I am fit to burst as well baby stretched just now and I thought it was going to push through my tummy. Poor thing has run out of room

MamaGoose · 16/02/2009 19:40

I have to go to hospital tomorrow. What an irony after having such a great home birth. I'm dreading being separated from my baby and that it will disrupt our fabulous breast-feeding. She'll probably have to have a bottle tomorrow.

I'm bleeding heavily despite being 12 days post-partum. Had a scan today and it looks like a piece of the placenta got left behind. I'm lucky that it's not infected.

Wish me luck. And if anyone has experience of having this sort of thing done (is it a sort of D&C?), I'd really like to hear about it.

lardybump · 16/02/2009 19:54

I have had a d&C due to mc but not placenta... Good luck MG will be thinking off you...

MamaGoose · 16/02/2009 20:15

lardybump what do they do and how long are you out of action afterwards, ie. how long will it take me to recover? Is it painful?

fruitstick · 16/02/2009 20:25

best of luck mamagoose

lardybump · 16/02/2009 20:38

I had a GA with mine MG. It wasn't painfull but was uncomfortable the following day. The bleeding stopped after about 10 days but I was back on my feet and back to normal after about 3 days.

dinkystinky · 16/02/2009 20:40

Oh MamaGoose - really hope the procedure is really quick and you're home really quickly. I'm glad you dont have an infection though so hopefully all will be very quick and you'll be home with Indy soon.

JenT - lovely name for your DD! Glad the birth was straightforward but sorry you needed a detour to hospital for your stitches.

LBB - fingers crossed you get discharged next time you see the CMW.

Pluto - congrats on the safe arrival of Al. He sounds lovely and cuddly! Hope all is going well now you're home. Bet he's a hungry little fella...

And finally, and I dont know how I missed this earlier, Happy Birthday Swampster - hope you had a great day..

lardybump · 16/02/2009 20:50

Sorry didn't explain what they do. I had GA at 11 in the morning, they wouldn't let me go until I had spoken to a counsellor but remember mine was due to MC so was totally different to yours and I had lots of extra emotional baggage. Basically the process is where the cervix is dilated and the lining of the uterus is scraped removing any (in your case) placenta. They may not even need to give you a GA they may do it via epidural or with no aesthetic at all......

It is very common procedure and there are no harmful after effects...

chilledmama · 16/02/2009 20:50

Mamagoose-not had ordeal personally but my good friend did after her first DD. She had been bleeding on and off but heavily then started haemorrhaging. Luckily they were close to hospital so got there really quickly and they rushed her in for a d&c which saved her life. She said that she felt like somebody had spent 30 minutes kicking her from the inside out with doc martins on. Recovery wise, she was fine. Painkillers obviously as she felt bruised, but she was up and about straight away. She had been having a few probelms with her milk supply for her DD but it turned out that was because part of her placenta was still inside. Once it was gone, her DD could feed properly. Sorry about bad news on initial discomfort but at least you know about it before it becomes dangerous to you and your recovery should be quick.

chilledmama · 16/02/2009 20:55

Pluto-well done you for growing such a healthy big boy...no mean feat!

lardybump · 16/02/2009 20:57

News flash

Astarte has given birth....... Dont know the full details but i am sure she will be on as soon as she can to fill us in.....

I am really pleased for her!!!!!!

dinkystinky · 16/02/2009 21:30

Brilliant news about Astarte - hope the birth went well....

Questionkid · 16/02/2009 22:00

Thanks for all your lovely messages ladies, I'm afraid I'm a bit emotional today and they all made me cry!! We'd had a pretty good day today, but then it went downhill this evening when I had my usual situation of dried up milk meaning Alex needed a top up feed, and he managed to choke whilst being winded which I found absolutely terrifying. Fortunately DH has some medical training as part of his profession and he was completely calm and dealt with the situation whilst I bawled in the background. Of course it was all fine, I mean, babies choke on stuff, it happens, but to see it happening to your own baby was just awful. He also doesn't tolerate the formula nearly as well as breastmilk so we've had some pretty nasty nappies to deal with at night.

Needless to say, I'm totally gutted that I'm not managing to keep him satisfied with breastmilk. Thanks for the encouragement to see the breastfeeding counsellor, I've got the CMW coming in tomorrow so I'll ask if that's something we can get arranged.

Don't get me wrong, I'm absolutely loving the experience of motherhood and Alex is wonderful in so many ways, but I'm feeling a little overwhelmed at the moment. Does it get easier???

fruitstick · 16/02/2009 22:14

QK it does get easier, I promise. It's the only time in your life that you have major medical procedures, no sleep and a brand new job for which you have no training or experience, all at the same time. Like any new job, it takes a while to find where the photocopier is and what to avoid in the canteen .

Make sure you have a good long chat with your midwife tomorrow and get the number of your breastfeeding counsellor. I had one with DS1 and found her really reassuring and supportive. It took a few weeks for my milk to sync up with DS needs but we got there in the end (with lots of weeping and feelings of failure in between).

Before you know it everything will fall into place and you will forget what you ever did before him ....

chilledmama · 16/02/2009 22:30

QK-nature can be cruel but fruitstick is absolutley right...give yourself a chance and you'll see, it'll all come together with a bit of time. My DS was sick constantly when he was an infant (still is at drop of a hat) so much so that we nicknamed him Pukey Lukey. The 1st few times it happened it was the most awful thing I could imagine, watching him cough, coke then be sick but bizarrely you get used to it...not sure if thats a good thing or not but its reality.

I'm having another evening of stupid cxns that I already know will come to nothing tonight as they aren't in the right area iykwim but hey whats another night...

mumoverseas · 17/02/2009 05:36

morning all
swampy, belated happy birthday wishes, sorry I missed that one yesterday

pluto, congratulations on the arrival of Albert

mamagoose, so sorry you have to go back in. Like Lardy I had a D & C after a mc and it wasn't too bad physically. I had a GA and afterwards felt a little bit of discomfort, like mild period pains which soon went and I was home the next day. Hope all goes well for you and sending hugs from Saudi x

we had a bad night last night. Sods law, I've been telling everyone how wonderful my little man is and then last night he was up most of the night crying. When we saw the paediatrician (sp?) on saturday I'd said how good he was and he joked (I thought?) that it would change once he was a week old when the colic etc started. I thought he was joking but maybe not. Anyway, little man now has a bad cold bless him and he is struggling to breathe when I'm struggling to feed him. So want to cut out all the bottles and for him to just bf but he is finding it hard work on the breast and I am wondering if it is because of his problem with his tongue.
DD thought it was highly amusing this morning when he sneezed a huge stream of snot all over his pj's though.

Calico1 · 17/02/2009 08:22

mamagoose - hope everything goes well for you today and you are not separated from Indy for too long.

pluto - big welcome to little (or as you say not so little) Albert!! Hope section all went ok. I'm getting nervous about mine on Thurs now....

QK - it will get so much better, I promise! The first weeks are a bit of a blur but then you're still getting to know each other so don't stress yourself that you are doing it wrong. You'll forget these tough first days very soon.

littleboysblue · 17/02/2009 08:53

Pluto Massive congratulations
MamaGoose Good luck for today (maybe I've missed you by now though) That's awful, and if the pains I've had are due to an infection (cmw seems to think it's normal), you are very lucky it's not infected, wouldn't wish the week I had on my worst enemy. I hope it al goes smoothly. x
I've also had a d&C due to mc, was given GA. Unlike chilled I only bled for a few days, I remember I had it done on the monday and I was out getting shit-faced drunk and acting up around the boys on the friday (I managed to lose all respect for my body because I felt it had failed me so had a very naughty few years, but that's a story for another time and another thread!!)
The pain was quite bad for the rest of that day and the following, but once painkillers kicked in, it was fine. I was home the same day too.
Astarte Welcome to the other side! Hope you and lo are well, look forward to all the gory details
QK Yes it does get easier, and trust me, what you are feeling is perfectly normal, you have had sooo much to deal with, in fact you have already been through so much more than most people have to.
FWIW, Luke manages to go through the motions of choking with each winding session.
Also, I don't know how many of my posts you've read, but I was quite low after ds1 was born, I attempted to bf, but didn't know then that milk doesn't come in til day 3, and ds1 was always screaming so I thought he was starving hungry so I gave up on day 3 and gave formula. I know I wasn't latching him on right because it really hurt and I was bleeding, but support was crap! I don't regret my decision because I did what I truely thought was best for my baby, but now I sometimes think what if (it wasn't enough to make me try bf again though).
All through pg, I'd read so many books about when baby arrives so thought I was well prepared, he got here and I was all wtf????? I was so overwhelmed, on top of being exhausted, feeling like the crappest mother becuse I'd given up bf, I also knocked the pushchair over while he was in it (by accident) when he was 6 days old and it all just got a bit much. God, I'm sitting here crying just remembering it all! but it does get easier, I promise. As someone that got to the lowest I've ever been and came through the other side, it will all be ok. Just don't put any pressure on yourself, take things slow and easy, listen to your body, and make sure Alex gets lots of hugs and you get lots of hugs, ask for help if you need it and it'll all fall into place sooner than you expect. hth

fruitstick · 17/02/2009 09:06

MO, sorry you've had such a bad night - I hope the cold eases up soon.

OK, this may be too much information but I still think my waters might have broken. I'm having a lot of discharge, although it's not what I would describe as a show. Also I feel damp and I'm sure it's not wee but there's not a huge amount of it. Can you leak in small doses?

Or am I just awash with bodily fluids?

lardybump · 17/02/2009 09:34

I have been having the same thing fruitstick, for a couple of weeks now. I thought I had an infection because I was so damp.... I couldn't feel it comming out but was very damp... I went to dr and he did some tests as could see the discharge and they all came back clear. So no infection. He said it wasn't my waters but rather normal pregnancy discharge but to treat myself for thrush just in case.....

If you can feel it leaking out then it may be different but I couldn't I would just get very damp and there was a clear like jelly discharge (sometimes it was a bit yellow)....

nkweto · 17/02/2009 09:45

Pluto & Asarte .. congratulations !! very well done, very happy for you both. Fantastic weight Pluto ..

MamaGoose .. good luck for today, I had a D&C many years ago for a mc. I dont remember it being too uncomfortable and was out of the hospital after a few hours.. hope all goes ok for you, what a pain after all this time..

QK... cry as much as you need to, and be very gentle and easy with yourself..let people take care of you and rest, rest, rest, sleep when baby does.. eat lots of food, drink lots of water...i echo what others have said about breast feeding counsellors and talking to mw's..and yes it does get easier... sending you lots and lots of hugs..

Swampy.. belated happy birthday !!

lbb.. hope you are feeling better now.. re your afterpains.. andi think Luke is a great name..

MOS.. sorry you had a bad night, hope you manage to get a little rest in today..

MrsY · 17/02/2009 11:03

Pluto and Astarte - congratulations!! Love the name, Pluto. A friend of mine just called her son Albert, and they call him Albie!

MamaGoose - hope all is going well and you and Indy aren't separated too long.

QK - I can totally relate to how you are feeling. Have you tried calling the La Leche League number for some advice? I did the other day, and she was very useful, emailed me some great info and get me the contact number of some local groups. 0845 120 2918.

lbb - Is it Luke's first name, middle name or the name as a whole you are worried about?

MOS - Hope you can leave DD in charge and get a nice nap.

JT - Harriet is such a pretty name. Congratulations!

littlesez - I can't remember if it was you who posted about high blood pressure, if so, avoid the clary sage (plus other 'warming' essential oils like cinnamon, clove, thyme black pepper and rosemary).

Had a bit of a better night last night. I'm still not convinced she's latching properly, but I'm pushing through and trying little and often feeding, so the norks don't get quite so full. Had to pump a couple of times yesterday so they went down enough for her to get a mouthful. It was like watching someone pick up a football with their teeth!!!

Am waiting for midwife to come and then we are venturing into town. We went to the park yesterday, and getting some fresh air made me feel almost human...
