Uh-oh. Boffin? You still with us?

LuLuBai · 29/01/2009 09:09

errrr - anyone?

gingersarah · 29/01/2009 09:15

Boffin, I have just read your post on the other thread - I can see why you are so annoyed. I am furious at the thought of losing people like you because someone else is turning it into profit.

This is off the front page of Mumsnet Talk:

The Mumsnet philosophy. We believe that by pooling knowledge and experience, parents can make each other's lives easier.

I see that every time I log in. POOLING knowledge is the opposite of APPROPRIATING KNOWLEDGE FOR PROFIT.

LuLuBai · 29/01/2009 09:26

Is this the Mumsnet Guides that are being heavily trailored accross the site? Where is the thread gingersarah?

AuldAlliance · 29/01/2009 09:31

If I had thought that bits of my posts could be published in a book sold by MN Towers, I'd never have posted.
The disclaimer may be find-able for those who deliberately seek it out, but it is, as gingersarah says, in complete contradiction with the philosophy of MN, which is proudly brandished in more visible places.

AuldAlliance · 29/01/2009 09:32

Thread here

BabyBolat · 29/01/2009 09:33

So will they name us in these books or will it just be comments from MNers?

Good morning Warriors

DD has a stinking cold, bless her, and was unsettled all night long. She's such a poppet, she kept saying "Ellen poorly, sad". She's sitting on the sofa now with a streaming nose, singing along to the songs in A Muppets Christmas Carol, wearing a toy colander on her head and an oven glove.

Boffin - Felix is a gorgeous name.
Yep, it certainly made a difference. I have been buzzing ever since my appointment.

Kitty - Could there be some red herrings in there?
Oh I see you have already said, I must stay more current.

Conker - I love that you thought of Cadbury World .

Nutty - Your DD is so adorable. We all hope her Mummy is fixed soon too.

I'm a bit disappointed we haven't managed to knock out 500 posts in the first 24hrs.

gingersarah · 29/01/2009 09:42

Oh no! Boffin has disappeared!

PuzzleRocks · 29/01/2009 09:42

Oh, just saw Boffin's post. Am off to read thread.

BabyBolat · 29/01/2009 09:46

"BOFF" "COME BACK PLEASE!!!"

With Nutty off with her DH today, Boff disappearing and Springy being all quiet and sick we are never going to meet our three day target!

Puzzle, how cute is your DD "sitting on the sofa now with a streaming nose, singing along to the songs in A Muppets Christmas Carol, wearing a toy colander on her head and an oven glove." The cutest image!

OP posts:
PuzzleRocks · 29/01/2009 09:48

Do you really think she has gone? I hope not?

BabyBolat · 29/01/2009 09:53

Oooh I hope not - sure she is just sat in her chair relaxing planning how to take on MN!

OP posts:
LuLuBai · 29/01/2009 10:04

Urrrrgh - I can see why Boff's p*ssed off but it will be very strange on here without her.

Love your DDs colander. Very Don Quixote. I'm going to have to get out of the house. My DD is quite the opposite. She had a very good night's sleep (for once) and is now absolutely raring to go. Unfortunately I have nowhere very exciting to take her. I need more washing powder and cat litter so it's off to the supermarket.

conkertree · 29/01/2009 10:14

Morning everyone - really hope thats not the end of the Boff - dont know what we will do without her advice and levelheadedness.

Off to give my lecture this morning - will see if anyone turns up as they apparently think this part of the course is non-examinable (sorry if I am repeating myself), but it is, and so they better come.

See you all later (hopefully with the Boff back in her gliding chair).

BabyBolat · 29/01/2009 10:19

Good luck conkertree!!!

OP posts:
AuldAlliance · 29/01/2009 10:51

Hope the lecture goes well, conkertree! I hate the fact that students don't bother with things that aren't examinable. What happened to intellectual curiosity?

Boffin, do check in if you can and reassure us that you haven't been censored! Though I don't think the MN powers-that-be trawl through posts at 11pm looking for naughty posters. Someone would have to report you, which seems unlikely (I hope!!).

Off to attack my latest pile of papers to be marked... have a nice day everyone, hope the aches and pains don't get you down too much.

BabyBolat · 29/01/2009 11:08

AuldAlliance, I think intellectual curiosity is seriously limited by too much alcohol consumption, last-minute cramming for deadlines and the need for sleep!

OP posts:
AuldAlliance · 29/01/2009 11:27

BB, you're probably right.
It is something that gets to me, though; I tried to set up a reading club for my students once, with several colleagues. My students rarely read in French and they only ever "read" (i.e. skim over) set texts in English, which I think is really sad and hinders them in their studies (they'll never be able to write good English if they don't read the language, as they'll never get a feel for the written tongue). It wasn't going to be a heavy literary club, we were planning on using lighter, contemporary fiction and setting up a blog with a British university.
The students asked how many marks they'd get for joining, and when they found out it was not part of the course, they said they'd not bother.

Anyway, how are you BB? When are you going to take your bosses to task? I'll be on ML 6 weeks before due date (statutory here, though if you want you can work longer before and carry the extra weeks over as maternity leave for after the birth). TBH, any more than 4-6 wks before the birth seems too little to me. You really need to be focusing on you, resting, exercising where possible, getting your strength up and generally preparing yourself.

BoffinMum · 29/01/2009 12:03

Hello, do not fear, I am here. I had to take DS1 to the dentist this morning, which I am proud to say I did all by myself (first time I have done mum stuff for over a week). I am off to the chiro in a minute, which I need as things are hurting again now a lot.

I have decided only to post on this thread (cos you're my gang), not to give any more professional education or research advice for free unless it's to you ladies via my special email account, and that I have probably sworn at MN Towers enough now to make my point. However in case my profile suddenly disappears, at least you know where to find me. I was worried about going AWOL and everyone thinking I had died or something, but not knowing.

DH told me site like this can do what they like with all our posts, pictures, information on profiles and everything as it's been tried and tested in the courts and we count for nothing, apparently. Too big a cause even for the Boff to take on, therefore.

AuldAlliance · 29/01/2009 12:09

Good to hear from you Boffin, and glad that you're well enough to do Mum stuff again. Hope the chiro helps.
Your plan seems sound; I'm glad I never set up a profile page with photos, etc. The fact that MN can publish all data we post is horrific.
Anyone who knows me could identify me easily from my posts, by piecing together where I was born, where I lived for 10 years and where I now work. I was working on the theory that it didn't much matter as I rarely post anything very personal or outrageous and if anyone I know read it it wouldn't much matter. But bits of my posts being put in a book somehow seems very, very different...

BabyBolat · 29/01/2009 12:34

Hey boff, think that is sensible! and yay for chiro this afternoon, hopefully that and some time in the magic chair will help!

I have just deleted all my pics and have sent a very curt email to MN asking them how to delete my public profile page as there is no delete button!

It's more the TMI / emotional stuff we put on here - you lot are like my sanity and tis the only place I post and don't really care how stupid I sound but if that was suddenly published I would be MORTIFIED!

re uni, it is a shame, I was having this discussion with DH earlier this week actually and think there has been a significant shift as uni before was about becoming better educated, enjoying the extra knowledge and widening the mind, but now the focus is on it as a process for employment, my four year course was definitely more focused on getting a career etc so you do what you have to do to get the grades etc to get the best job rather than out of genuine interest.

Auld I am actually much better this morning - didn't oversleep (which helps) and today is my last day for the week as tomorrow is antenatal (yay!) although am nervous / embarrassed at the potential mock breathing exercises! Trying to be as productive as possible today as I would like not have to do much tomorrow afternoon! It is also the first day in 2 weeks that I don't have a headache and while I feel fat and slow, not too many major concerns today! I also tend to like Thursdays as 1. It is officially the end half of the week and 2. It is my favourite Tv day (that is very sad I know) but all my favourite programmes are on and DH is out tonight so I can sit in, watch them in my jammies and MN to my heart's content! Bring on ER, Brothers and Sisters and Grey's Anatomy (I do love American drama series!!!)

Re bosses, Got my risk assessment at lunchtime with my lovely office manager and have sent an email to my bosses saying that I would like a formal meeting about maternity next week when I am back in the office and I am going to spend a while this weekend writing down everything that needs to be covered off so we can have a proper discussion about it and come up with the answers which I will then email them afterwards so I have it all in writing. I do need to get it all sorted, largely the flexible working element - as there is no way that I can come up to london daily for the next 8 weeks - this week twice has been bad enough but think I could for the next four weeks do three days a week (staying in London with friends for 2 nights) and then from March just 2 days.

Anyway enough about me....

OP posts:
AuldAlliance · 29/01/2009 12:54

Hope you get it all sorted BB...
About the uni, I think what got to me about our failed project was that it would have helped the students to succeed and therefore theoretically to get a job. Just because no mark is awarded, they think it's a waste of time.

A night in front of the TV sounds nice. We don't have one, so settle for DVDs on the laptop. Although I got DH a set of "House" DVDs for Christmas, and am having trouble watching so much medically-based stuff. Too many tubes and needles and sudden trips into people's innards for me. I'd rather think about less gory things until after mid-April!

Hello all, I think I'm going to be horribly lazy and pretend that you haven't posted anything since midafternoon two days ago...I would take me forever to catch up otherwise!
Don't let it seem that I don't love you...I'm just lazy.
