Thanks I thought it would be really difficult to start a new one and silly me it couldn't be simpler.

I am luckier this time round with dd i never saw the same midwife twice this time i have seen the same person at the gp's surgery every time.

Hi everyone, I have just had the results back from the blood triple test and they have come back at 1 in 60 chance of my baby having downs syndrome. I have an appt with a specialist on Thursday but am going a bit crazy wondering what this means. Does anyone know whether this is the worst result you can have or whether it could have come back at say 1 in 10? I am probably clutching at straws at the moment but any advice would be very welcome. I've looked elsewhere on mumsnet and the net but cannot find much information.

milward · 12/04/2005 13:02

Hello Sandy - I'm also having a tough time with my antenatal tests - I've posted all about it on the sept threads. Your ratio isn't the worst ratio you could have. I understand from my situation that the problem zone falls at 1:250 downwards eg 1: a number less than 250. It doesn't mean that your baby has abnormalities just that there is a higher risk that there might be. For you there is one chance in 60 but this doesn't mean that you are the 1 in 60 that will be effected iyswim. For the triple test three factors in the blood are tested afp, Estriol and hcg. Ask for your blood test actual results - rather than just the risk factor. The results are generally given as a multiple of a mean - in that an absolutely normal result would be 1. My estriol value was 0.66 - much less than 1 and my hcg value as 1.17 - just over 1. I don't remember my afp result but it was less than 1. This points towards a baby with downs syndrome for me - these results were then combined with my weight and age (36) to give a risk factor and also gestational age which I for me was double checked by ultrasound before but if dates are not correct can also give false results in the triple test risk ratio calculation. I have an ww address that I found useful will hunt around for it & post it here. As your result is 1:60 you'll probably be offered an amnio - see what your doc says and also how you would feel about having one. I understand that this is a difficult time for you. Keep strong - hope you get all the info you need on thursday xxx

Sandy - I found this site useful www.americanpregnancy.org/prenataltesting/tripletest.html

SandyR · 12/04/2005 16:12

thanks ever so much milward for the info and the support. it's just come as such a shock. we were so over the moon after 5 years of trying for a baby and so didn't even really consider anything might go wrong. I will ask for the actual results, will give the midwife a ring in a mo. Am I right in thinking that the closer to 1 each of the values are then the less likely my baby has of having downs syndrome? Just checking I understood you correctly.

Kiwifruit · 12/04/2005 17:46

Hi Sandy - sometimes those tests seem to create more stress than relief! Good luck with the specialist on Thursday - will be thinking of you.

Haven't had a triple test yet, but when I had my nuchal scan the sonographer switched the computer to 'nasal bone not present' to show us the impact that would have on the results, and it increased the chances of our baby having Downs to 1:20

andif · 12/04/2005 18:00

SandyR - after all that time trying, you will love this baby whatever. It must be very worrying though. Best of luck with appt on Thurs. The great thing about Mumsnet is that there is always someone else with a similar problem - strength in numbers!

SandyR · 12/04/2005 20:26

Haven't managed to get the actual figures yet but spoke to the doctor at my local surgery and he was just so nice. He spent ages on the phone explaining things to me and reassuring me. Sometimes people are just so kind it makes you cry (inc everyone on mumsnet). Spent long time talking to DP about it and we have decided to think positive until we know more.

milward · 12/04/2005 20:37

Sandy the closer to 1 either way then the less likely situation of probs - but everyone is different and what reads for one as ok doesn't for the other - iyswim. I'm not medical so this is just from what I've found out & understood from my docs!I had the triple test at 14 weeks as I had such differing ratios with nuchal test ranging from 1:20 to 1:780 !!! (Kiwifruit - perhaps something like this happened to my results) My doc said to take the ratio from the triple test as the risk that I should consider but to get more info from the test results. Check out the web ref & there is a table with the differing score combinations of higher & lower than 1 and the conditions they are associated with. I agree with andif - you'll love your baby whatever. I spent from 10 weeks preg to 15 weeks stressing over results. I've decided to stop this now and just let what will be happen. I've decided against an amnio (but everyone makes their own decision on this one!) and my doc said that I could have a scan at 22 weeks to check for problems. Just to add that I have full respect & support for whatever conclusion you come to with this - good luck. I hope you feel better after your thursday appointment. Hugs xxx

milward · 12/04/2005 20:38

Great attitude to the situation - I wasted so much time stressing

pooka · 13/04/2005 09:16

Good luck for your appointment Sandy. Hope all goes well.
Re: thrush, I found out I was pregnant because was TTC, got thrush, and thought I should do a test before I took the canestan pill. And bob's your uncle!
At my weepy booking in appointment I talked about fears of tearing like last time (With horrible re-stitch at 7 months after) and midwife said it's important to be trush fee when labouring as it can contribute to tearing. So wil get it treated if reoccurs.
Went to first yoga class last night. Was fantastic. Felt really really positive about home birth afterwards, and am determined to get my breathing sorted. Also, baby suddenly started going mad during the class, which was lovely. All that deep breathing

andif · 13/04/2005 10:09

My last MN moment for a while - bloody computer (only 5 mths old) has disc stuck in drive, so off to be mended. Suspect my phone bill will increase now!!
When I'm back think people will be on to scans - how exciting!! Mine's not for 4 wks, but can't wait to hear when people start finding out sex. Think we have decided to now, but won't tell anyone (except MNers maybe....) we know to keep some excitement!!

franch · 13/04/2005 18:02

Hi andif, and thanks so much for the osteopath tip. Back pain has been easing off a bit and had a fabulous massage today (am in Edinburgh at the mo staying with parents - so lots of help with DD which is lovely ) but will make a note of the no. for reference. St Paul's Rd is right at the end of our street.

Baby has been kicking away for quite a while now - DH can just feel it which is nice. Next scan is a week on Fri, and hopefully we'll find out the sex - can't wait! Had a very early 2nd scan with DD because of a scare so found out her sex early - consequently this time it feels like a long wait! At the moment I've a feeling it's a girl but I keep changing my mind ....... I'm totally 50/50 this time - last time I really wanted a girl and I got her so now what will be will be

JenJam · 13/04/2005 18:11

franch · 13/04/2005 20:14

Hi JenJam, am away from home at the mo, just checking email ... will reply on the other thread - thanks

mummyhill · 14/04/2005 08:13

Anomily scan tomorrow!! Have decided not ask the sex but will be looking very closely at the monitor will probably tell mnetters but not the real world if we see anything!!!!! We have decided to take DD with us as she keeps asking where the baby is, what does it look like and why can't she see it.

LadyLazarus · 14/04/2005 10:30

All these scans! quite exciting! I have mine at the end of April, and I DO want to know the sex (to be honest, the thought of someone else, ie. the scanner person, being able to tell and us not knowing would kill me!!)

On a less cheery note, I was just eating an apple and have been horribly sick . nooo! I thought I was past that sicky stage Have to go and meet my mum from the train station soon, so hope I don't spew a ringer on the tube!!

Piccalilli · 14/04/2005 10:52

My anomaly scan's not til the end of May!! It seem a long way away and I'm feeling very anxious as I still haven't felt the baby move. I know it's still early, I'm just very down at the moment anyway as my cat died yesterday. I decided not to go to work today as I was having a lot of abdominal pain yesterday - probably just the stress.

Kiwifruit · 14/04/2005 11:11

Picallili - so sorry to hear about your cat. We had to get ours put down about a year ago, and it was horrible Big {{{{Hugs}}} to you.

I haven't felt my baby move yet either - is weird, as I feel like I'm in a bit of a limbo, and keep imagining all sorts of horrible things. Have my 2nd midwife appointment next week, so hopefully will get to listen to the heartbeat, which will make me feel better. I'm also getting cramping in my stomach - think it is just things moving around to make space, as the baby's growth starts to speed up about now (according to babycentre.co.uk), so I'm putting it down to that.

Take care of yourself. xox

Piccalilli · 14/04/2005 11:39

Thanks Kiwifruit. My cat had leukaemia and cancer so we had to have him put down too. It was a huge shock as it came on really quickly and he was only three.

The cramping I was having yesterday was different to what I've had before - much lower down and more painful. I've not had any bleeding though. I've got a mw appointment on 4 May so should be able to listen to the heartbeat then. How many weeks are you now?

Kiwifruit · 14/04/2005 11:49

I'm 16+4 so guess it's a couple of weeks until I should be feeling any movement (think they say around 18 - 20 weeks for your first baby) - am just being impatient! How far along are you?

Someone stood up and offered me a seat on the tube last night - after I'd picked myself off the floor from the shock, I was really embarrassed, as any bump I have at the moment is more food baby than real baby !! Have been feeling really hungry lately - usually my breakfast porridge lasts me until lunchtime, but my stomach is rumbling by 9:30am!

jofeb04 · 14/04/2005 11:57

Hiya all,
Im hardly on here that much now, but just to let you know ive been feeling the first movements of the baby, the flutters. Its our 2nd baby, so i recognised the movemtns. Im 16weeks, and cant wait.

Piccalilli · 14/04/2005 13:03

Kiwifruit, I'm 16+6 so it looks like we're in exactly the same position!

I've been offered a seat on the tube 3 times so far, and it was a bit of a shock, but I have got quite a bump. My friend who works for the Underground has given me one of those 'Baby on Board' badges but I've been too embarassed to wear it so far. I'm saving it for when I've had a really bad day and really can't face standing all the way home.

Bless. DH has just mailed me to find out if there's any courses you can do to find out what to do when the baby cries. Wonder if he's refering to the ante natal classes
