Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
FiKelly · 30/01/2009 14:46

When I was in having DS and having trouble with breast feeding due to milk supply the hospital gave me a few formula feeds. There were mums there that had decided to formula feed instead of breast feeding and the hospital preferred them to bring their own supplies in (I think due to costs involved of providing feeds for the whole day/night for a multitude of babies). No one will judge you for bottle feeding... I used aptamil too and DS is a delight with no ill effects. I was the one who was gutted about not being able to breast feed. He didn't care where the next feed came from. You'll find your MW & HV might not push you so much 2nd time around. Mine are being far more relaxed about BF versus Bottle... I think due to having a 2nd Child around the home to run after...

Momino

I've done it every time - I see momino but my brain says 'moomino', as in The Moomins.

I'm so sorry!!!!!!

Jael · 30/01/2009 14:56

Momino My panic attacks are very very bad. They stopped my medication as soon as I told them I was pregnant. So to go from having them under control, maybe like once a month I'd have one. I'm now having at least one a day. On top of it, I suffer from asthma too, so It's really scary, trying to decipher what's asthma and whats a panic attack, as I've had a few asthma attacks in my time too.

I've tried looking in like the hospital guidebook regarding feeding the baby in hospital, but it says absolutely nothing about bottlefeeding. I've getting myself in a tizz already though about it. As i had a c-section last time and it was over a day before I could even manage to get out of bed, how am I going to make my baby's feeds up?

Thought it was about time I updated my amended date!!
On the subject of bargain clothes - Peacocks have some ýoga pants' in at the moment which have an elasticated waist and are great as pj's for 6quid, has saved me from shelling out on maternity pj's.
Had my blood test for gestational diabetes this morning - I was starving by the time I left. Quite a feat for me to go 12hrs+ without eating whilst pregnant

Jael when I had ds the midwifes gave mothers the disposable bottles of milk, or you can you what my friend did when they were not suportive to her mixed feeding - she used to sneak a bottle out of the room where they kept it!!! Could you not ask your midwife when you see her next, I'm sure she'll be able to tell you or point you in the right direction

llareggub · 30/01/2009 15:36

Belgianchocolates you may be surprised by your maternity pay. Your salary will be what it was at a certain week before your due date (I forget which) so whatever you earned that week, including enhancements, shift allowances etc will be regarded as earnings.

Lots of people who know about this save up their mileage claims etc to boost their earnings for that week

jael I was in hospital for a week last time for various reasons, and my hospital had a good supply of sterilisers, breast pumps, formula, fridges etc for women to use.

llareggub · 30/01/2009 15:40

jael I also had a c-section and I've no idea who fed or changed DS for 2 days. It certainly wasn't me as I was in and out of conciousness for various reasons! I know DS had formula because my milk didn't come through until day 3, and although I pumped, nothing came out. When DH wasn't around the midwives cared for DS. I did manage to breastfeed in the end, but it was a real struggle. I must say the hospital weren't really bothered whether I formula fed or breastfed, I certainly wasn't pushed in either direction and I did get the distinct impression that they would rather expressed bm or formula milk in my case, as DS was jaundiced and his milk intake needed careful monitoring.

So please don't worry about it.

Jael · 30/01/2009 16:14

I can't help but worry, as everything was so horrific last time, which led to my PND. I want to be as prepared as I can this time. I'm having this baby in a different hospital from last time, as I was treated so poorly last time. They've changed by midwife 3 times so far this time, so I've only seen my new one twice, I don't feel like I can talk to her at all, as she's very pro vaginal delivery, and i'm not having this baby naturally under any circumstances. God, if everything had gone right last time, I wouldn't be in this mess, stressing about everything, I'm sure of it.

llareggub · 30/01/2009 16:19

The midwives don't really have time for anything but the physical exam, I've found. I tried talking to mine about my fears about returning to the hospital where I picked my infection and she was very dismissive. I feel like no one will be accountable or be able to do anything that will be different next time.

BUT I am more prepared, know what is right and what is right for me. So this time I am going to be assertive and question my treatment. I remember shivering with cold on a ward where everyone else was complaining of the heat, and the doctor told me I was fine. I very clearly wasn't and luckily the midwife spotted what the doctor couldn't and wouldn't, but I was very passive. Not this time!

So that is one advantage you have over last time. I've chatted to the NCT and they have a maternity liaison person who knows how things work. Have you tried them?

Jael · 30/01/2009 16:25

No, I haven't spoken to anyone apart from DP. No-one really knows about how distresing my labour/aftercare was with DD. But I have been scarred with it, I'm so frightened that thing's are going to be the same this time, that I can't even concider having my baby naturally, that hurts me so much. I'm so sorry for going on and on. Like I'm the only one with problems X

llareggub · 30/01/2009 16:39

That's why we are all here, to help each other out. You must say as much as you feel you need to, no one minds and maybe someone might say something that helps.

pulapula · 30/01/2009 17:09

Jael,

There were formula fed babies in hospital when i've been in before (just remember to ask for a bottle well in advance of when baby needs it to avoid a meltdown!), and i was offered top-up bottles when I was knackered from all night feeding sessions which obviously weren't satisfying my DD (5 days in hospital and my milk didn't come in til day 6 when i was at home). If you have a preferred formula, you could take it with you, but they should provide the sterilised bottles etc.

If you are having a section, then expect to be in maybe 3-4 days (I was told 4 days but came out after 3).

runningmonkey · 30/01/2009 17:24

Hi all,
Well I am away for a couple of days and can't believe all the different things I've missed talking about... altho not the laundry thing, we have a wash bin and that's about it. Things only get ironed if they are really creased

FiKelly We're also trying to sell our place and I understand your feelings completely. I'm finding it hard to buy things in anticipation of the lo's arrival as we just don't know what's going on, we've had 10 viewings since beginning of Dec and everyone says they love it but so far no offers

Jael I can't begin to understand what you are going through as a first timer but I didn't want not to acknowledge your messages, sounds like you are having a tough time so Big Hugs. My friend had a horrific CS experience and found the NCT were really helpful when it came to mentally preparing herself for the second one.

Am sitting here with hair dye on my hair as a kid in school pointed out my fuzzy grey roots today Have just though that I haven't worked out how I'm goign to wash it off tho as bending over the bath is not going to be a fun experience. Doh!

Jael · 30/01/2009 17:25

I han an emergency section last time, and was in for 6 days afterwards, I'm hoping it's going to be abit shorter this time. I'm next seeing midwife 12th Feb, so I'll ask her about bottles then, I'll have DP with me that day, so If I'm not brave enough to ask, i'll get him too. All I want to do is be prepared, sounds like all hospitals are different. You'd think they'd have something about bottlefeeding in the guide they gave me about the hospital though X

llareggub · 30/01/2009 17:32

I've been told 3 days is the norm for a c-section, but like you I was in for 6 days last time. They told me so long as I have the op before 12 noon, that will count as day 1 and I'll be out sometime during day 3, so not too bad.

Thanks, I might do. TBH it is terrible, but I wasn't overly surprised. It was pretty filthy, and the showers often had blood on the floor. I'm going in armed with flip-flops, anti-bac spray and wipes this time and will send DH in to clean before I use the showers and loo.

Jael,

If you are worried about what the hospital will/won't provide, then I'm sure you can find a way to work it all out. My DH would visit me each morning and evening in hospital and sometimes stay a bit in the day so you may find you can get someone to bring sterilised bottles in for you and take the used ones away. I was forever giving DH lists of things i needed as you never have exactly what you need! I had an elective last time and although i didn't have an em section the first time, so can't compare, i found it a wonderful experience, and i hope you will too.

I know every hospital is different, but i found the staff were wonderful for the first 2 days after my cs- they told me to ring for any help, even just putting my baby back in the crib, since I couldn't move. They would do baby's nappy etc and change him. So i'm sure they will make feeds up for you, don't worry.

Momino · 30/01/2009 18:33

Jael, I feel guilty for having a rant or talking about probs but then, Dandy is right, we all do it and it's amazing the support that comes from everyone on this thread. I'm so grateful.

Anyway, hugs to you as you're going through a tough time and need support from your MW and hospital as well. I hope you're able to find it. Try to imagine this birth is going to be better than the last (no matter if Csection). and def try to get away from guilty feelings of the way you're feeding, the birth, etc. it's very personal.

grumpy, lol at the moomino, hehe.

CoteDAzur · 30/01/2009 19:08

Jael - I just wanted to let you know that you are not alone. Last week, I broke down and cried a river when talking to MW. Then cried for a full hour in front of the maternity ward psychologist she sent me to. (I would be too scared to do this in UK in case Social Services tries to take baby away because mum is nuts, but there is no such thing here in France) Now she is fighting my corner against doctor, midwives, etc.

Don't be afraid of pushing for what you want. It is your baby, your body, and your birth.

Momino · 30/01/2009 19:16

Cote, that's good advice. I'm going to keep that in mind with this birth: don't be afraid for pushing for what you want. I didn't last time and felt like decisions were made as if I weren't there.

.

FiKelly · 30/01/2009 19:17

jael I too have switched hospitals for the birth of this LO for incompetence reasons re DS birth via Em CS. Just the fact that I'm having this LO somewhere different is making me a bit more relaxed about having to go into hospital to have #2. But the birth is still a worrying subject to me and I still don't know whether to brave an elective CS (my em one went wrong after) or brave a natural delivery. I wouldn't worry about making up the formula feeds for your LO. The midwives all know how to do it and would never leave your baby hungry. I'm sure you'll get help with doing everything you're not able to do while you're in post CS. But I agree as they're always busy you might have to buzz for help a while in advance!

Chocolate is giving me hives at the moment but I got the urge for some cadbury's mini rolls today... so had to go out and get some. I've demolished 1 in a few seconds and i'm lining up #2... just hope the hives aren't too bad.... but I just had to have them and couldn't resisit!

Rubysmom08 · 30/01/2009 19:32

hello ladies... havent been on for ages! Hope everyone is well, my aches and pains have started to ease as I have been havin loads of Pyshio which is working and sleeping on an air bed really helps!

I am delighted that I don't need a c-section and have planned my homebirth with the midwife, can't believe that my dh is so on board with it!

I think the turning point came a couple of weeks ago when I had a bleed and went to hosiptal, was in the labour ward and had to use the loo to give a uring sample, there was blood on the toilet seat and I called dh to come and see, he agreed with me that I would be happier at home which is a relief. It was so disgusting!

I have ahuge bump now, the little one is moving none stop!

Love to all and their baby bumps xxx
