chocciedooby · 03/02/2009 12:42

Hi ladies Still struggling to keep up with you all but hope everyone is well.

We had snow here too yesterday as it was sooooo exciting. Have only seen snow a few times in Dublin in the last decade that I have lived here so it was great for the kids. DS1 made a family of snowmen

Louise I don't think you can take stepsils when pregnant but maybe check with pharmacist first. Hope you are feeling a bit better today. Colds are horrible when you can't take anything.

MrsMc - Yes my placenta is at the front and oh my god...I didn't realise that was its pulse I was feeling . That is so wierd. I have been feeling it for weeks thinking it was the babies heart or something. it is soooo strong.

Have to rush and pick up 2dc's now. Bye all x

LittleSarah · 03/02/2009 12:43

June - Oh yes, the other thing about being further along is that it would mean I've finished my degree and work! Oooh, those will be great days!

Ineedmorechocolatenow · 03/02/2009 13:11

Louise - my sister and SIL are both pharmacists and they say it's fine to have Strepsils. There's no evidence of any harm to baby - but with all these things - if you're not happy to, then don't take them. I had a nasty cold a couple of months ago and took them at night when it was so bad I couldn't sleep. You can have Vicks Sinex too - no evidence of harm, but again if you're not happy - don't take it. Hope you feel better soon.

Snow is thawing gradually, tho lovely to have DH at home for another day. I think life might just get back to normal tomorrow... maybe!

OP posts:
flynn1984 · 03/02/2009 13:33

Afternoon all

Louise - I think there is conflicting advise on taking strepsils I had a cold a couple of months ago (can feel it coming back) and was told by one pharmacist not to take them but another one told me it was perfectly safe...

June I hope the pain you are experiencing eases soon, maybe a referral to a physio will be the best thing for you hope you get one soon x

Oh can't wait to hear back from Tee Maz & Ermintrude about their scans starting to get excited about mine tomorrow

I was at aqua-natal this morning only downside being I had to come back to work now sitting at my desk struggling to keep awake, but it was so much fun! Didn't realise how many calories that aqua natal burns off but then jsut eaten a greggs sausage roll so every calorie burnt has now been put straight back on

You will all hate me.

My official labour for my dd was 20 minutes - from the moment we went into the labour room until dd came out. In fact I spent 10mins of that leaning against the bed breathing the deepest breaths of my life, as the midwife filled out the paperwork and told me not to push until she was finished. She then did an examination to confirm I was fully dilated. When I was finally allowed to push, dd came out immediately - first push.

I actually think my labour was closer to 40mins - after passing the transition stage.

You can imagine how surprised I was - I spent 9 months of pregnancy preparing mentally for the hours and hours that would be spent in hospital. So it doesn't necessarily happen that way

Juicygirlpink · 03/02/2009 15:50

Hi ladies!

Can I join? Due 8/6/9!

Looking forward to chatting to some like minded (&bodied! women!)

Hi Juicygirlpink! Welcome I added you to the list.

How has your pregnancy been so far, can you feel your baby yet?

flynn thanks, good luck with your scan tomorrow :D

I was just checking my maternity notes and it doesn't look like there is another scan planned, does that sound right? I would have thought there is another one to check the baby's position (my lo is breech at the moment.)
almost forgot meet and greet at the birthing centre tomorrow and app. with midwife on friday. She'll probably tell me I put too much weight on (16 pounds now at 22w?)

Scan went very very well. All the right baby bits are in all the right baby bit places. Good heart, good brain, measuring right on at 19.5 - 20 weeks even.

So there is one healthy baby in there. Oh and as agreed with DH, no idea on the gender!

llynnnn · 03/02/2009 17:22

hi all

congratulations Tee on your great scan, so pleased for you

Ermitrude and Maz - hope yours went well too

Flynn - good luck for your scan tomorrow

Juicygirl - welcome and congratulations

I'm full of cold again, why wont these bugs leave us alone! i'm leaving work in 5 mins and going straight to bed!

Daisy - I hope you get another nice labour like that, I hope we all do!!

very jealous about all your snow, we had about 1mm here (lincolnshire) and dd pestered me all morning that she wanted to make a snowman!!

June - hope the doctor can help you with your pelvic pain, sounds awful

Juicygirlpink · 03/02/2009 17:23

Hi there!

So my pregnancy has been fine thanks! Had no morning sickness (sorry to all those yummy sick mummies out there) the only niggles are things like haeartburn (yuk!) & achy legs. baby is a kickaholic, seriously when I eat I feel a flutter about 10-15 times in 1/2 an hour!

We had our 20 week scan nearly 2 weeks ago & baby is just fine & dandy, if not a little naughty (in the scan room for 2 hours!!!! baby was all upside down & in completely the wrong position for any type of measuring bless it!), thanks for adding me to the list, it's so nice to be able to chat to people in the same position, there is only so much 'advice' one can take from the older generation .

Oh the whole scan thing, when my little one was avoiding all camera contact , I said to the nurse 'don't worry you can do these measurements the next time we come in', she was like the next time? there is no next time! I was really surprised!!!

My view on babyweight - please please don't fret!!!! we are all different!

Anyone planning to have their baby at UCH btw?

bigcar · 03/02/2009 18:12

Tee, so glad your scan went well

Welcome juicygirlpink!

June, they won't rescan unless there is any doubt which way the baby is lying. They will be able to tell by feeling which way your baby is lying, shame really, it would be nice to get another peek at our los

Still very snowy here! Kids are off school tomorrow as well, needless to say this is something they are not unduly bothered about, especially as it was supposed to be assessment week!

ermintrude13 · 03/02/2009 18:52

Scan went really well, all present and correct. The technology has come on since I last had one 6 yrs ago - they can actually see the two arteries and one vein in the cord these days as well as all ventricles and stuff - amazing! Nice 50th centile for all measurements so hoping it's not going to grow into a whopper like its 9lb 7oz big brother! So glad yours went well Tee - I wasn't actually worried but it still feels like a relief, doesn't it?

Placenta is anterior but high up, and hasn't affected me feeling movements since around 14/15 wks but then this is my third. DH felt them for the first time a couple of days ago too.

Welcome juicygirlpink June, hope your pelvic pain feels better. Regarding future scans, a baby's not really termed breech at this stage because it will be moving around a lot. If a MW suspects it's breech nearer term you may have a scan then, but at this stage foetal position isn't significant.

daisy5, that's one fast labour! Are you having a homebirth this time? My second stages were 16 mins with DD and 2 mins (shot out like a rocket) with DS and I could still walk about until the last 20 mins of the contractions in both cases, so all being well I won't have to risk a journey to hospital that could end up with DH delivering LO at the roadside! I had DS at home and it was lovely. Brutal but lovely...

Good luck to others having scans!

Juicygirlpink · 03/02/2009 19:04

Hi all!
I have a question, what are your views on 3d scans? I am really keen to have one but dh not convinced..... Please help! Thanks

Tee2072 · 03/02/2009 19:51

That's the one thing I didn't find out, what centile the baby is in, although I assume its not an issue since all measurements, as I think I said, were within 2 days of my 20 weeks!!

Also, the scan equipment doesn't seem as good as some of yours sounds like they were! It was a bit fuzzy and our sonographer had the personality of a wet blanket. No jokes with this woman! She also said I was 'a difficult scan', whatever that means! She pressed so hard on me at some points I was squeezing DH's hand, it hurt so bad.

But its over, they got all their measurements and baby is perfect!

MrsMcJnr · 03/02/2009 19:59

Hey ladies hope all the scans went well today

Flynn ? all the best for tomorrow

Tee & Ermintrude ? fab news hope you both sleep really well tonight in the knowledge!

Littlesarah ? hope yesterday came and went without too much sadness for you, I remember what should have been my due date for the baby we lost, I was 30 weeks with DS which helped but it was still a sad, reflective day xx What are your plans for your home birth? Birthing pool?

Poor you with those pains June. I get stuck on the floor with DS and can?t get up for the pain sometimes.

Choccie ? I guess on one hand it is reassuring to hear the pulse of the placenta!

Daisy ? I am still confused as to when labour begins and you start counting the time I didn?t really have a transition stage but it was about 1 ½ hours between getting urges to push and DS being born. I can?t remember how long I was pushing for though, maybe 15 mins?

Welcome and congrats Juicygirlpink my Dr (private, in Spain) has a scanner that does 3D/4D plus standard so he just uses all of them each time. I have found it fascinating watching the blood flow etc but it is also interesting to see a more rounded baby if you like. I put a 3D photo from my 20 week scan on my profile, it?s not excellent as my baby is shy and the placenta is to the front so obscures the pic a bit but you?ll get the general idea.

I have my wk 24 appointment next week, they do bloods each trimester here too ? the joys.

Went to look at a potential apartment for us today, it was nice and the kids rooms are a good size but the master is a bit poky, no room for anything other than the bed and maybe a Moses basket at a push

ermintrude13 · 03/02/2009 20:17

Tee it sounds as though your babe is bang on for dates so that's 50th centile. Our report included graphs for femur length, head circumference etc. which placed a cross on the relevant point as well as gave the measurement, but it all means the same thing.

Our sonographer was really lovely, it's such pot luck. When I asked about seeing the 4 chambers of the heart she showed us everything in great detail, including changing the screen to show blood supply (red for venal, blue for arterial or vice-versa), and then went on to give even more specialist info about kidneys, bladder, spinal cord etc - at one point I actually didn't know what she was on about . And she wasn't sure about placental position so got me to go out and fill my bladder for 20 mins then checked again when she could see more clearly. Yours will have been checking all the same things but not bothering to communicate - the kind of sonographer who likes the gadgets bit but not the people bit. Rubbish! But either way you know all is well and as it should be .

Juicypinkgirl if the NHS offered 3/4D scans as part of the service, like MrsMc's private doc, I'd love it. But not enough to pay for it. I'm looking forward to seeing the baby in the flesh now and don't feel a desire to get more pics, but understand why it appeals to some mums, especially first-timers.

Tee2072 · 03/02/2009 20:25

I'm like ermintrude re 3D/4D scans. If they were on offer for free, of course I'd do it. But do not want it bad enough to pay for it!

flynn1984 · 03/02/2009 21:19

Tee & Ermintrude congrats on your scans glad they went well

Any news yet on maz's scan been thinking of her all day today.

juicypinkgirl my SIL had a 4d scan done when she was pg with her daughter and it was amazing! As it is me and DH's 25th birthday on the 12 & 13th March respectively my mum has paid for us to have a 4d scan done on the 13th March and can't wait for it

Thank you all for the kind wishes for my scan tomorrow I will keep you ladies all up to date, here's hoping buba isn't lying awkward as I would like to find out the gender tomorrow (kind impatient)

daisy5 · 03/02/2009 22:13

tee - I searched on the internet for the average measurements and then compared mine. DD had a big head and short legs so I was curious to know if Thumper would be a shorty too. Here is something www.baby2see.com/medical/charts.html

ermintrude - I never dreamt I would consider home birth, except after dd shot out, the midwife said I might want to consider it or be careful the next one wasn't born in the car park. So now I am seriously thinking about it. My biggest fear is if I needed urgent medical attention. How did you find it?

juicypink - welcome. I had a 3d scan at 14 weeks which was way too early - looked like a martian. They say the later it gets the more they look like the baby you will recognise. If you can afford it, most people seem to really enjoy the experience. Would 30 weeks be a good time - half way between the 20 week scan and birth?

mrsmcjnr - good luck apartment hunting. It's so refreshing to find something that ticks all the boxes, but a decent master bedroom is important for the sanity and the soul. I was told that technically labour starts after transition, but surely it really starts with the urge to push.

Hello to everyone else. Got to get to bed now. Well done babyee and babyermintrude - sounds like you passed your tests with flying colours. babyflynn - go for gold.

ermintrude13 · 03/02/2009 22:33

daisy5 I found home birth the best option for me and all went smoothly - and speedily! DD was a water birth at Edgeware birth centre with 2 midwives helping - I was v keen on the idea of keeping doctors away unless I or baby needed them (probably an effect of having parents as doctors!). I arrived at the centre fully dilated, yet convinced I had a long way to go, and only up to no. 6 on the TENS machine . So after that I felt confident enough to do it at home (on 'dry land' - water birth was nice but not vital) for DS. They were both head down, normal size, no complications and I was in good health.

Two of my sisters and many friends have had home births for their first. One sister had to be transferred after the birth because she'd lost a lot of blood and a couple of friends were transferred because of long second stages, but all ended up having natural birthe and were fine in all cases - and most have gone on to have another, more straightforward home birth.

I'd say that it's a question of deciding what makes you most anxious - for me that's the possibility of giving birth at the roadside, the smell of hospitals, being on a noisy ward when I wanted to bond with baby and the risk of 'clamming up' and needing intervention I wouldn't need if I were relaxed and doing things in my own time. If there were the slightest question over the baby's health or if I had medical complications I'd see it as risky, but if all is going well I see it as the easiest option for me.

Sitting up in my newly made bed in my own bedroom, b/f newborn DS while DH read to DD on one side and the MWs wrote up their notes sitting on the end of the bed, all drinking tea, was truly delightful.

ps: love the 3D martian scan That's exactly what they look like at that gestation!

loooouise · 03/02/2009 23:20

hey ladies!
Great news Tee and Ermitude re the scan! Ooooh, it's all lovely and exciting and fun.

And thanks for all the Strepsil advice everybody, I ended up on just good old fashioned fruit tea and honey and paracetamol. After 3 days in bed, I finally seem to be on the mend and breathing from my nostrils again

Love your labour story Daisy. Juicy* I wasn't really up for forking out for a 3d scan, but I've just gone and booked one for 27 weeks bc my babyfather is in the UK that day and because he lives abroad he hasn't been with me for any of the previous scans. So it's his only chance to see baby in utero and I'm hoping it'll prepare him a little bit, as I suspect the pregnancy is still fairly abstract for him. Anyway, this is by far the cheapest I've found in London at £95. Don't know where you're based but they have six more regional centres www.babypremier.co.uk/SiteContent/Ultrasound/4D-Scan.html

Other gossip on the babyfather front: he has kindly agreed to travel to Yorkshire with me on Easter Saturday for my baby brother's 18 birthday celebrations! So that'll shut up the gossiping relatives. I really appreciate him doing this, it means a lot to me. Although two of my brothers and my mum have met him a few times, he's never met my dad. I figure it's good they meet before they do in the delivery suite corridor of Harrogate General! So it's all boding well for healthy co-parenting... (I'm right off the idea of attempting anything else just now...think that earlier post when I sounded wistful was more hormones than anything else!)

Oooh, I have a question for ye all. Baby showers: are they de rigeur here in the UK now? I always think of them being an American thing. My mum doesn't approve for superstitious reasons, but I think it would be OK after 32 weeks. I'd like to have one with fizz and pink cupcakes. What do you all think?

June2009 · 04/02/2009 00:01

juicy do you mean university college london hospital? Is this the location you chose or just considering it?
I went there two weeks ago for a detailed scan and I'm now considering it for birth even though it's an hour away and not sure where we would park.
Dh was born there. It looks really good and modern and clean and the people there were really really friendly.

Going to a meet and greet at the ridgway centre, midwife led, within chase farm hospital tomorrow.
There's a really great word in french which applies here: "bof"
Basically means it doesn't look all that great but I suppose it'll do.
This is more local but still within Chase farm hospital.
Chase farm has a bad reputation, they were on watchdog along with barnet hospital last year because of complaints from pregnant women, with one of them giving birth in the corridors. they were understaffed at the time, i don't know if that's still the case. The whole hospital has been in the local news a lot last year, it might be closed down. There's been a lot of people signing petitions to keep the emergency services open at least.

Ive not had a great experience at the maternity/scans department of chase farm so far so I am a bit worried about this choice and kinda looking around, been thinking of going private but it doesn't matter whatever way I look at it, we can't afford it.

Hopefully I'll be reassured after the meet and greet tomorrow.
Well that's if my glucose levels are acceptable and I'll only know that towards the end of March.

bunnymother · 04/02/2009 00:20

Evening ladies!

Sounds like an eventful and happy day with all these scans, very good to hear!

loooouise - I was thinking about baby showers, but then decided on a pre-baby afternoon tea (no theme, no presents), just cake and bubbly and giggles. I haven't really heard of baby showers over here, but then I don't really know any other pregnant women.

Juicygirlpink - we are having our little one at UCH, and have been v impressed so far with the facilities (ie brand new maternity wing and equipment). I remember there is a thread on mumsnet somewhere where a lot of MNers complained about Royal Free and praised UCH.

On 4D scans, we were thinking of getting one, but then DH not keen (thinks that its a bit intrusive and that if the baby looks odd I will freak!). But then you know they aren't going to look exactly the same and that the filming can make them look odd. Overall, sounds to me like a fun thing to do, and if you have the spare cash...

Am I the only one whose sleep is quite disturbed? I keep on waking up about 5am (even 4am one morning), then it takes me about 1 to 2 hours to fall asleep, and now also taking nanna naps in the afternoon. Am a geriatric, God help me!

Tee2072 · 04/02/2009 05:36

Morning all!

loooouise the one thing that my SIL says she hates about me being here rather than the US is that she can't throw me a baby shower. Personally, I am not that bothered. I don't really have any female friends I would invite and some how I don't think the men I hang with would be interested!

bunnymother I was sleeping really well, until yesterday and today! I was assuming that yesterday was because I was anxious about my scan, today I have no excuse!
