Kayz hugs to you. I really don't want to upset you further, but just about everything the m/w has said to you is absolute and total crap (eg breastmilk is supposed to look watery ffs). It is totally up to you, but you really may want to do a summary post on the b'd board and get some proper advice (eg his birthweight, initial loss etc etc). There is nothing in what you have posted here that suggests your DS needs top ups just yet, esp given he was a big baby to start with and as such will have had as standard a seemingly bigget initial weight loss (I don't think, but obv am not an expert).

And you do know that the topups will make it much harder for b'fing to succeed. Hope I haven't stepped out of line, but I do know you really want to b'f. Veggie may be able to offer you some much better advice if you want it. Please take care - you are not a failure - and there is nothing wrong with your milk.

traceface · 19/12/2008 18:15

oh Kayz please don't feel like a failure. You are doing so well. Top ups are not a bad thing, and like you say, you can do it for a bit and the BF might pick up. Even if not please don't beat yourself up.

Well I rang my MW and she asked me to go to the clinic this morning, and she had a really good look at me, in fact "a good old ferret around" as she put it! Anyway, the stitches are looking great and that's not what's causing my pain. My labia is (are?) grazed very badly, which she said is much more painful than stitches but should start to heal and improve in about 3 weeks. It sounds ages but I guess it's reassuring to know that it's something she's seen before and that there is light at the end of the tunnel. She's coming back on monday to check it again. I wept profusely but think it was quite cathartic!
dd1 has just got home from her last ever day at nursery so is now officially a big girl and ready to start school in Jan!! How scary!
Well dd2 is smelling abit ripe again so must go and do nappy duty... catch you all later xxx

Turniphead1 · 19/12/2008 18:16

Kayz just realised you already have another thread - and Tiktok is there. All will be well....please take care.

Indith · 19/12/2008 18:18

Kayz, I'm a bit at your MW giving you strict times for the breast, that is not going to help supply. I'd be on the phone to a proper bf person.

katie3677 · 19/12/2008 18:48

To all those having BF problems (((((hugs)))). A friend of mine said something to me yesterday that made alot of sense (experienced Mum of 3). Basically with 2nd/ 3rd babies we should just do whatever we need to survive, ie. don't beat yourself up over switching to ff, using a dummy etc. It's much more important that we, as Mums, are well and feel in control, otherwise baby and the rest of the family suffer much more.

Lal when I stopped bfing DS I did it gradually, replacing night feeds with formula and then gradually also replaced the day feeds as well. It took about a week in all. He was three weeks too.

I have been to Boots and stocked up on formula, nipple resembling teats and dummies (plus final Christmas pressies) and am feeling much happier for just having them in the house, which means I probably won't use them now.
I also managed to express 2oz earlier which my Mum gave to her and she took it really well and she is now having a bit of awake time without constantly rooting which is nice. I fed her a bit before and after, so she is obviously a hungry girl.
So feeling much better in all and reckon I might manage tonight without having a nervous breakdown!

Hello all and congratulations to everyone who has given birth .

Well, I got in on Tuesday (though it wasn't looking promising) and came home yesterday. The elective was difficult and unpleasant so I'm not going to post my story as I don't think it was a typical experience and the staff were brilliant. He was big - unsurprisingly - and took a lot of getting out.

My boy is Max Walker (Max from "Where the Wild Things Are" and Walker was my Grandad's middle name). He was born on 16th December at 1.01pm and weighed 10lbs 9oz.

He is lovely, and so far feeding okay despite needing a lot of topping up on day 2. The MWs were marvelling at his capacity to eat. He will fit in well at our house!

Best wishes to everyone and good luck to those due. I will check in soon when I'm a bot more settled.

I will now attempt to put a picture on my profile.

kayzr · 19/12/2008 19:33

Put a picture of Dylan on my profile finally.

Hope everyone is ok.

Turniphead1 · 19/12/2008 19:49

Ahhh - he is gorgeous Kayz. I heart big baby boys! Reminds me of my DS when he was born.

EffiePerine · 19/12/2008 20:14

Congratulations Abby Sorry to hear yo had a bad CS experience, hope you are recovering now.

Kayz: hope you're getting some good advice on the BF, the MW does sound like a bit of a loon TBH. I'd be wary of top-ups at this point unless absolutely necessary bt am not expert.

Veggiemummy · 19/12/2008 20:14

Hi Katz just a quicky you are probably getting advice on ur other thread (sorry don't know where it is) but I 2nd turnip what the mw is suggesting is the exact opposite of what you should do it will make it harder to get the hindmilk. I think you seem to be doing fine from his photo he is clearly a healthy boy. And I would interested to know how soon post birth they weighed him. If he hadn't done much if his mecinium poo this can account for a lot of weight. Katz he is your baby you do what you feel is right for you and he. And def give a bf counsellor a call. MWs have a surprisingly low knowledge of bfing. Is this the same mw who told you to express.

nina rose born last night. weighing in at 10lbs 2oz. all home now.

trace both your girls are so lovely! You must be so proud of them both.

Veggiemummy · 19/12/2008 20:30

Hooray Abbey have been thinking of you, you have had a bad time with big delay and then a bad experience very sorry about that but a healthy little man at the end of it. Love the name that book is one of mine and ds1s favs.

I phoned my GP surgery today to arrange an appointment for DS2 to have his newborn checkup at the baby clinic. They told me the 1st available appointment with the doctor who does the newborn check is 20th January, which is around when he will be due for his 6 week check. Bit rediculous really so instead I have to ring on Monday to see if I can get an appointment with one of the normal GPs. I asked if the general GPs would be ok with doing a newborn check up and the receptionist said 'oh yes there are lots of female doctors on Monday' I'm not quite sure how being female makes them more qualified to do a newborn check up but anyway I'm sure he is fine and will just go along anyway.

Turniphead1 · 19/12/2008 20:35

Veggie do you need this just because you have had a HB? I have never heard of a newborn check and am worried now. Is it just what the paed looks at when you give birth in hospital. Glad you are getting an apptment though!

kayzr · 19/12/2008 20:39

Veggie it is a different MW. Unluckily I managed to have him when my normal mw was going on holiday. I should see her on Monday and I can't wait as I know she'll be more helpful.

Its the same mw who told me to FF DS1. I thought I'd be stronger this time round so I could say no. But I just couldn't, I just want him to put on weight.

JamInMyWellies · 19/12/2008 20:45

Hi everyone, been trying to catch up all day think I have finally managed it.

Kayz am off to hunt out your other thread but agree with the others your MW is talking boll**ks. Keep feeding on demand or increase how often you feed if he is not demanding very often.

Bisou hope you get to your dads shindig i reckon you will be a Christmas eve labor.

Indith I cant believe you are still hanging around for sure I thought you would have popped by now. How is the house of ill?

ZJ dont really know what to say to comfort you but try and keep your chin up my lovely and dont get too fixated by them having scan machines lots of consultants have little ones in their rooms.

Verso am with you on the DH's my DP although has been lovely today and in genetal spoke to my mum tonight and from the sounds of it you'd have thought he had been Mrs mop all day.

Abby congrats love that you called him Max after where the wild things are.

God have gone brain dead I know I had loads more to comment on but cant rememeber, I had totally forgotten what the sleep deprivation does.

We are doing ok her in the Jam household baby Lachlan is I think doing well he is a touch jaundiced so he has been sunbathing today and I have been trying to increase his feeds but he really is not terribly interested in feeding for longer than 10 mins at a time. Also my nips are getting a bit traumatised plus my milk is on its way so my boobs resemble bowling balls which has made my nipples even more inverted than normal so super difficult for my wee man to latch on. I have been expressing for a few mins before each feed and that has helped a bit. But apart from all that and a very sleepless night things are brill . My big sis came over today with her 4mth old and she just looked massive compared to L we put DS1, then my niece then DS2 in a row on the sofa and took their photo it did look really funny.

Right off to catch up on a zilion other things, ooh meant to say I heart MARS too she doulad (is that the plural?) for another of my mumsnet friends and is an amazing woman.

Veggiemummy · 19/12/2008 20:45
