Hi ladies - official piles update report follows.
I went to see a surgical dermatologist yesterday, and although there's still no "why, yes, we have exactly the solution to heal you in the next 5 minutes" answer, I feel so much better having talked to someone who, unlike my GP and OB, actually said more than "Sorry, can't do anything, just going to get worse anyway, good luck."
He sympathised greatly, explained clearly WHY surgery is best avoided at all costs, and then consulted with the resident OB to draw up a medication plan. I've got a xylocaine cream ("it's not a miracle cream, but it might give you some topical relief"), and then a three-step oral meds progression. I can start with Dafalgan (don't think they have that brand in the UK - it's a basic analgesic (no pun intended) usually sold in 200mg strength but he gave me a scrip for 1gram). If that doesn't work, he gave me a morphine derivative (now we're talking!), with the caution, "these shouldn't be eaten like Smarties," and if THAT doesn't work, then I have a scrip for a strong anti-inflammatory. But with that one, I would need to come in for an ultrasound BEFORE taking it, to make sure all placental blood vessels and the umbilical cord are in good shape.
He gave me his mobile number, said to call at any time if I needed more help, and said he'd try to make it down the hall to my next ultrasound (Dec 15) so he could do a brief checkup without me having to bother to make a separate appointment. Nice, nice guy.
I still feel like crap, but as I said, just knowing there are things I can do, and that I've been taken seriously, makes a huge difference.
Now we just need to decide whether we're actually going on the holiday we've booked for next week. I hate the thought of being out of pocket and not getting the benefits, but on the other hand, if I'm still fairly immobile, it's probably easiest to do that in Brussels rather than Andalucia.
