Myneaux · 18/12/2008 15:24

aah....maybe it was pounds instead of kilos, cant be sure !

why is it that the minute you leave the midwife you think of loads of things you either dont understand or forgot to ask.

Either way Im not worried....any weight I have put on seems to have gone to my boobs (2 cup sizes increase so far) so Im not complaining.

CoteDAzur · 18/12/2008 15:33

mica - We get not only printouts of quite a few 'pictures' on USB key, including the one where the nuchal measurement is taken. And anywhere while it is taken, ultrasound doctor says "Here is the femur, here is the two sides of the brain, all normal, and here is the nuchal thickness, 1.9 cm (or whatever), all normal".

Unbelievable (to me) that you weren't told the nuchal measurement although it was taken in front of you. Why the hell not?

ermintrude13 · 18/12/2008 16:03

cote, i got all that info too (though we were given printouts not a USB key which doesn't bother me!) and it's completely normal to be told the nuchal fold and given your reassessed percentage straight away. so mica, sounds like you had the bad luck to have a disinterested sonographer, while cote on the continent and i, in the UK, got the kind you should have. It's like when you get really nasty midwives who seem to hate babies and mothers - you wonder why they chose to do the job at all!

myneaux, 4 kilos is well over half a stone, I think that you'd notice that if it was all on your chest

June2009 · 18/12/2008 16:19

oooh so much to catch up on :D
cote thanks or the link, fascinating!!
I also had the nuchal scan on nhs and they did not tell me the measurements. Got the results today (2 weeks later) by post. (ow risk for me apparently).

flynn good luck with the job and I just had a cold sore and my doctro told me it was fine to uze Zovirax at 15 weeks.
Ineed Are you over it enough to find it funny? I am sorry I couldn't help but laugh as it reminded me of me bursting into tears when the gp's receptionsit was insisting there wouldn't be a booking appointment for me. (she was wrong of course).
Did you get your money back?

Vikbaby Hi! I had 1 scan at 13 w on nhs and a private one at 15w.

mica23 I was really upset with my first nhs scan. I felt guilty about being upset too as the baby is healthy but it was over in less than 10minutes, she didnt tell me any of the measurements and I was disappointed. We ended up going for a private scan where they gave us a recording of the baby and it was all worth it.

redtabby Hi! Glad you joined the group I wish you all the best.

Ineedmorechocolatenow · 18/12/2008 17:07

No, June209, I just ran out with the credit note! I'm laughing now, but was so mortified at the time. Mainly because I couldn't bloody well stop once it'd started.... Oh well..

llynnnn · 18/12/2008 17:27

oh no Ineed, poor you! I wouldve died too!! i dont know where all the emotion comes from sometimes. My dd went away with her Nanna for the weekend to a family birthday party (we couldnt go as dh was working) and had planned a nice quiet, relaxing evening in but i cried ALL the time because she wasnt here with me and i was the most terrible mother to send my child away!! she, on the other hand, had a fab time!!!!

welcome vikbaby and redtabby!

I have had just one scan at 12 weeks which went really well, and have another at 20 weeks (16th jan, excited already!!)

mica - sorry u are still feeling disapointed by your scan. hopefully at your 20 week one you'll get a different sonographer who will actually talk to you like a human

flynn - good luck with the job, it sounds like a good opportunity

ermintrude - hope you are managing to keep the nausea at bay

Hope4Future · 18/12/2008 19:03

Hi Everyone

I am a regular visitor to the page, but haven't posted as I've had a late mc before and I've just been very private about this pregnancy so far.

I was hoping I could ask some advice though, a bit personal, but...they say that toilet trips normally decrease in second trimester, but I find myself needing to go every couple of hours- can anyone reassure me that they are the same, or doe sthis sound a bit too often? I'm 14+4 by the way

June2009 · 18/12/2008 19:27

Hope4Future Hiya! same here, I need the loo a lot more now that I'm in 2nd trimester, exspecially at night which is annoying. I also feel tired a lot, just spent the past 3 hours on and off in bed (I guess that's how I was up until midnight the other day ;).

DorisIsAPinkDragon · 18/12/2008 20:44

Hi all,

welcome to all the newbies

Hope- I have definitely started to increase the frequency of toilet trips.

Question for you all, today I've started to to ache around the pelvis every time I stand up from a sitting position, which has gotten worse as the day wore on, definitely and ache not a stabbing pain just wondered if I'm alone in this????

Had our first nativity today with dd1, she was the only angel who carried her halo into and out of the performance She also spent half of the time with the angel next to her peeking behind the stage curtains, so we just saw the back of her head, however it was all desperately cute and I was a > they all did really well and sang 8 or 9 songs, so came out all festive!!!!!

Anyway going to finish the online application for dd1's primary place OMG she only 3 and we have to apply by Jan, arghhhhh growing up so quickly!!!!!

Stay well

Doris

dreamydowler · 18/12/2008 21:29

Hello all and welcome to all our new mums and particular congratulations to those who have previous mcs I had two before my last child and dont think I allowed myself to believe everything was ok until I had had my 20 week scan.

dorris sounds like your ligaments stretching but if it gets any worse ask to see a physio in case of spd (symphis pubis disorder)

I think its really important to drink plenty to avoid possible urine and kidney infections so really we should all be weeing more. Babys kidneys should be beginning to function too so extra to wee out as long as there is no burning or stinging or a constant thirst I wouldnt worry

MrsMcClaus · 18/12/2008 22:04

Hey ladies saw my baby girl again tonight all fine and always such a relief to see and be told that!! I?ve lost more weight but no-one is worried about that. Anyone know anything about a ?golf ball? in the heart? Dr pointed it out and said it used to be a soft marker for Downs years ago but not any more ?I wish he hadn?t even mentioned it

Flynn ? DH and I looked into reusable nappies when I was pg with DS. We went to a few seminars held by a charity and saw all the different types and signed up for a lending pack so that we could try them all out when DS was born and then choose which type we liked. We sent the charity 3 cheques and the lending pack never arrived we also looked at a special reusable nappy laundry service but then left Scotland when DS was 4 months and I am ashamed to say that all our reusable plans went out of the window as we had so many other things to think about with the move. I?d like to reconsider them again for this baby though, aside from the cost issue, I do hate the amount of waste nappies create and can you believe it? In the heat here they don?t even use nappy sacks! In defence of disposables, my DS has never had nappy rash and many of the babies I know who wear reusable do have issues with that.

Myneaux ? 10kgs may be the average but what you ?need? to put on throughout the whole pregnancy is somewhere between 11 ? 16 kgs (24.2 ? 55.2lbs) depending on where you started. I put on 2st5lb in my pg with DS.

Tee ? LOL at the Mummy or Granny comment! I dyed my brown hair blonde all through my 20s and now in my mid 30s (35 on 29th ) when I am au naturale I have got grey hairs, there is no justice!

Vikbaby ? welcome and congrats! don?t worry about the weight, it will happen. I?m down 9lb from where I started off!

Redtabby ? congrats and welcome to you too! Sounds like a strong little bean making you so sick (I know how you feel, yet another sick day here )

Ineedmore ? poor you! The hormones just creep up on you don?t they?

June ? welcome and congrats! like llynnnn I feel like I need to go more often than I did a few weeks ago too.

Doris ? sounds like ligaments stretching hon not comfy but all normal

Waves to everyone else

ttcnumber3maybe · 18/12/2008 22:53

Hi all! Sorry I haven't posted for a while... have had dreadful all-day sickness/nausea and just been so busy in run up to christmas. Have had 3 scans now... had first 10 days ago but was not quite 12 weeks so had another scheduled today on NHS and a further one privately today to do nuchal in more detail and find out sex (get a discount thru a friend lucky me!). Nuchal fold is big at 2.5mm (55.6cm crown to rump length) and at the private scan they also checked for nasal bone which wasn't as strong as should have been... so my down's risk went from 1:70 (compared to 1:190 for my age I'm 36) to 1:13 !!!!! DH and I v shocked and opted for CVS tomorrow (were lucky to get a quick appointment) ... wish me luck girls. I couldn't quite believe I was pregnant with my 3rd... and now can't quite believe the risk level is so high ... just needed to put it down so sorry this is such a me me me post.
For others who have written about having CVS thanks so much as its been so useful to see things written down and hear other experiences. on plus side they are 70% certain that we're having a girl which is a bonus after our two lovely sons. Should find out next Tuesday results so here's crossing everything x

Tee2072 · 19/12/2008 07:40

ttcnumber3 everything is crossed for you and I hope everything turns out okay.

I'm having a triple test and scan on 5th January and I'm trying to not dwell on it over Christmas. I'll be 40 when the baby is born, so automatically my risk 1:100!!

Ineedmorechocolatenow · 19/12/2008 08:45

Good luck ttcnmber3maybe I hope all well for you. Good luck for yours after Christmas too Tee....

I've recovered from my humiliation yesterday and am now laughing about it. I don't remember having those hormonal moments in public last pregnancy.... I certainly remember having private meltdowns tho. I've read through my diary of my previous pregnancy and I've written about an evening where I was crying all evening and night and just had to shut myself in our bedroom not to upset DH as he wanted to 'fix it' like all blokes do, and didn't understand why I couldn't just stop crying! At least it was in the privacy of our own house where I could deal with the snot in private.....

Feeling lots of ligament stretching this morning. I hope that means my bump is growing. It would be nice to look a bit more 'pregnant'....

Oh, and not to worry you Doris, but that's how my SPD started last time. If the pains don't subside, then get a referral to a pysio from your MW. In the meantime, if you want some tips for coping with the pains, let me know.

Hope all is well with the rest of you x

I obviously meant physio, not pysio... oops

OP posts:
June2009 · 19/12/2008 09:35

Flynn I must admit I did not look into reusable nappies.
Although we conscientiously recycle / re-use wrapping paper etc I just decided to follow what my "greenest" friend did when she had her first baby 3 years ago. She gave up after a short while: leaks, hard work, not enough sleep/patience.
I thought if she couldn't make it work there was no chance I would keep it up.
I am also worried that there will be too much to think about already with our first baby without making things complicated for myself.
mmm is that really selfish .
Now you mentionned it I'm going to have to look it up again

ermintrude13 · 19/12/2008 09:51

Washables are pretty good these days; I'm going to inherit zillions in every size and will try to use them at night and when we're mainly at home, but disposables for when we're out and about. But I'll definitely use Nature Baby or other eco disposables, however expensive they are - it's ridiculous that there's no legislation yet to stop manufacturers producing the awful toxic landfill ones, and I couldn't have that on my conscience when a few pennies more resolves it.

I remember the soaking bucket with my sisters' pooey terry towelling nappies in, and those sweaty plastic pants they had to wear on top. No wonder babies were potty trained at a much earlier age in the 70s - anything to stop wearing terries!

Ineedmorechocolatenow · 19/12/2008 10:02

I looked into both before we had DS. I spoke to a few people who'd gone down the re-useables route, and others who used disposables. I think, tho I haven't researched for 2 and a half years and it's probably changed in that time, that the burden on the planet is pretty balanced. The carbon footprint of all that extra washing at higher than 30 degrees, the extra washing powder etc (not to mention the sheer, bloody hassle of it all when you have a newborn), vs the landfill issue.

Having chosen the disposables route, however, I do feel HORRENDOUS every time I empty our nappy bin and see how much I'm throwing away. I also balk at the price of disposables and hate how much I've spent on them over the two years I've been using them.

Oh, and my friends who use reusables, use disposables when their DCs have tummy upsets, or they're away from home overnight etc.

I may look into using reusables with this next one, but I think I'll still be using disposables.... especially when s/he's teeny.

OP posts:
ermintrude13 · 19/12/2008 10:04

Ineed, see my msg above, you can get biodegradable disposables, thus reducing the guilt and carbon footprint, if not the smelly pile in the bin .

Ineedmorechocolatenow · 19/12/2008 10:12

Yeah, thanks ermintrude. I used them for a month with DS and he leaked all over the place and got horrible nappy rash with them. I felt more guilty for that than anything else!! He also wees a lot at night and they just didn't hold for a 12 hour stint so I had to get up in the night to change him and then I just resorted to Huggies anyway. I think I might try them with him again at some point, as it may have just been the size he was, but my sister's found the same thing with her DD.

OP posts:
flynn1984 · 19/12/2008 10:18

Hiya all

thanks for your replies re: reusable nappies. I would love to think I could handle the reusable nappies but the more I think about it it is prob easier on myself and dh to use disposables think i'll look into the biodegradable ones

llynnnn · 19/12/2008 10:49

hi all, another disposable nappy user here. I do feel guilty about the amount we throw away and did look into reusables before dd was born, but never actually got round to doing anything about it will have to do more research this time, but i do struggle to keep up with the washing, drying and working with just the 3 of us at the mo, let alone when there's another one to do too! Also the nursery that dd is in part time and has been since six months dont like having reusable nappies there so would still have to buy some disposables too! its a tough one to weigh up the environmental issues of both and the time and money they would actually cost/save!

welcome to hope4future - i am also paying very frequent visits still! i have been told to rock gently back and forward and side to side to help empty the bladder as much as poss

ttcnumber3 - sorry to hear about your bad news, i have everything crossed for you for your cvs today x

Doris - the nativity sounds lovely, i cant wait for that!

June2009 · 19/12/2008 11:23

hey, awfully sorry for bringing this up here and for clearly TMI this early in the morning but just came across a thread where someone mentionned massaging oil down there to avoid, ahem, tearing during birth & (so sorry :S)
Anyone of the experienced ladies out here know about this?? I think the techincal term is "perineal massage".

Vikbaby · 19/12/2008 11:30

Wow what a lovely welcome, glad to know im not the only one not putting on weight, and Tee2072 thats great that we have same due date sorry to hear about ur early complications glad everything is ok now:D wow this is exciting how this group is at similar stages in pregnancy!
x

Ineedmorechocolatenow · 19/12/2008 11:33

I massaged down there for weeks June and still had loads of 2nd degree tears. All a load of b*llocks if you as me. Won't be doing it this pregnancy, I can tell you!
