loooouise if it's any consolation, i bet you not many of us attached women have been getting much action in the bedroom - especially those of us who are still getting m/s and throwing up. Doesn't get one in the mood. Mind you, after our strenuous conception schedule poor dh needs the rest

He's hoping for the return of my libido for Christmas..

loooouise · 16/12/2008 22:08

LOL Ermintrude, I hope it comes back for you at Xmas too! (looks wistfully into the distance, then remembers to refill hot water bottle to warm the bed....)
Actually, I had a horrid wave of MS at work today, male colleague brought me a cup of water, then queried loudly as I left the room "do you think you'll actually be sick?"

daisy5 · 16/12/2008 22:38

cote - fingers & toes all crossed. Thanks for the link to your doctor's presentation. I shall sit down tomorrow and listen. He seems to have a good sense of humour.

tee, ermintrude & cote - I so understand where you are all coming from, having been scanned previously in Spain with the absolute top of the range equipment, having a private scan in UK and having 2 hospital scans here too (one outside London, one in the North West). The difference in detail was just unbelievable - even between the two NHS hospitals. The superior equipment left absolutely nothing to the imagination (extraordinary detail) the private UK clinic allowed us to check organs & count fingers/toes etc, and the hospital equipment at my local NHS hospital was so poor by comparison that I could barely distinguish the arms & legs at times.

loooouise - yes lots of worry. You'll get used to it. A worry free life seems a distant memory.

mrsclaus - thanks for dress appreciation . it was a black strapless number from Picchu (floor length) www.PicchuMaternity.com. Really accentuated the bump but in a nice way. Very evening wear though, so a bit limited in use. Guess I will sell it on ebay after sproglet arrives.

flynn - I suffered ongoing headaches with no. 1 but with no.2 they have stopped after 12 weeks so I am grateful. Fruit used to help (and fresh smoothies) for about 30mins but then they would come back. I never had them before I got pregnant so it was a bit tiring. I hope yours start to go, they do for most people it seems.

All well with me. Loving my bump. Felt movement three nights ago which was so exciting and 2.1 was very content and did a couple of somersaults when daddy stroked my tummy. I am a bit euphoric about it all.

Ineedmorechocolatenow · 17/12/2008 08:28

Hello there!

Just taken me bloody ages to catch up. You ladies have been busy!

Like you Daisy5, I've started to feel the baby move. It was really active last night and was fluttering around all over the place. I was about 16 weeks when I felt DS move, it's so exciting!

Looooouise I also get those pains. Tho I can also assure you that there is not much bedroom action going on since I fell pregnant. I'm so exhausted by the time I go to bed, and with SPD there are only a few ways of managing it, logistically speaking...

So pleased that all the scans are going well.

I've now broken up for Christmas and taught my last supply day for 3 weeks. The kids were all asking me if I was pregnant as I have a real bump now and I think they felt safe asking. They were all really excited, really sweet.

Can't believe it's a week to Christmas eve.

daisy5, I was defending the good old NHS not complaining about scans. I think we have a great system - it would be even greater with better investment but does pretty well in difficult circs. Fine to have the option of paying for v detailed private scans, or the benefit of having a very hi-tech hospital nearby, but it can't be an NHS priority and I'm very happy with the quality of scans and care I'm getting. I also worry that the extent to which some of us see massive detail at 12 wks mean we all it and get anxious if we don't. That anxiety is bad for us and our babes. It's like pregnancy tests being so amazingly sensitive - great in some respects, but I know so many women who are ttc and test themselves 3 or 4 times a month which then makes them feel like quadruple failures, instead of relaxing and only testing when their period is a week late. Technology is fab but can be a double-edged sword to the layman or woman.

Your dress sounds amazing - I have to go to a wedding in January for which the dress code is party frocks (not for the men, I hasten to add) so will check out that website. Got down my old Bloomin Marvellous clothes from the loft and they are horrible, so might go to H&M and get some cheap but wearable things.

Yesterday night I threw up in the loo, flushed, and then my mobile fell from my dressing-gown pocket and splashed right in it. It's dead now

Mhairi100 · 17/12/2008 09:23

ermintrude bad phone luck!! Just wanted to say that you DON'T get 12 week scans on the NHS where I live, or the surrounding area (Chippenham, Bath, etc) - I was a bit upset at the time. The doctor told me it wasn't necessary anyway as I was only 29 and wouldn't be at risk of anything . Which wasn't the point for me. I'd have had a 12 week scan everywhere else I've lived in the past, and I've never known anyone else not to get one in other parts of the UK, so maybe the NHS is pretty skint round here...in the end we paid for a private one. The midwives have been fab, though, so not all bad news

CoteDAzur · 17/12/2008 09:31

Hello everyone. Thank you all for the good vibes. Amnio went well, although every bit as painful as I remembered it. (Who are these people who claim amnio "doesn't hurt, it's just a bit uncomfortable" and do their doctors use something else than the 6-inch needle that impaled me?)

All good for now and results due Friday morning. Doctors seemed to think I was being precious having an amnio with a 1/250 triple test result, and their optimism gave me hope.

And it was lovely to see the baby pedal his little feet

CoteDAzur · 17/12/2008 09:38

Looooouise - If I may give a word of advice: Yes, pregnancy is full of uncertainties and hence endless worries, but do try to be calm about it all. I worried endlessly with DD - Googled everything that could possibly go wrong, stayed up nights worrying what we would do if she had a serious problem, about the birth itself, etc.

We have had a very difficult first year with DD, as she was very anxious, all the time, impossible to calm down, and I suspect this had to do with me being very stressed when pregnant with her. At 3, she is still very tightly wound.

This time, I'm taking it easy. I don't have a care in the world. What will be will be, and all that. I'm aiming for a very chilled, easy baby this time

ermintrude13 · 17/12/2008 09:40

Mhairi, that is a shame about your area. The scans are used by most health authorities for 2 reasons: dating and checking for multiples. What if you got to 20 wks and discovered you were having triplets?! Bath and Chippenham are mostly quite posh, I wonder if they assume people will just pay for scans privately? It's true that at 29 you've not got much to worry about - I didn't treat my 12 wk scans as diagnostic in any case - but I was keen to see how many were in there as twins and triplets run in my family. Just the one, thank goodness - twins would finish me off!

CoteDAzur · 17/12/2008 09:41

ermintrude - My mobile went in the toilet and stayed there for an hour or so until I noticed it was missing.

Took it out, stuck it in oven for 10 minutes, then left it on radiator for a week. It works fine now.

ermintrude13 · 17/12/2008 09:47

Cote I can't believe it! Mine was only in there for about 2 seconds before I put it on the radiator in bits, but only overnight. I wonder if leaving it a week would help... Trouble is, I need it NOW because so many people use it as their main source of communication with me. But I'll try drying it out a bit longer.

Good job nobody had flushed before you realised where it was! I think many mobiles must be dropped down toilets, it must be the main reason for changing them

CoteDAzur · 17/12/2008 09:49

Leave it to air on radiator for a week before turning it on. Apparently, the main reason why mobiles go bust after being dropped in water is because they are turned on while still wet which causes a short circuit. Good luck!

ermintrude13 · 17/12/2008 09:50

I will try it and report back, thank you!

flynn1984 · 17/12/2008 10:06

Morning all!

Quick question...can you use cold sore cream if your pregnant? woke up this morning with a extremely sore throat and a nasty cold sore starting I'm not having a good time of it lately

Tee2072 · 17/12/2008 10:21

flynn I would check with GP or pharmacist on that one!

If anyone would like to see my 13 week scan pics, they are up at my blog!

cote I'm glad the Amnio went okay. Hope everything comes back okay on Friday! Keep us posted.

As an Expat I am amazed at the differences in service at the NHS across the UK. You would think it would be the same everywhere, but you'd be wrong!

Mhairi100 · 17/12/2008 10:44

ermintrude, yes, must be a shock for those who hang on until 20 weeks to discover there are 3 in there!! Yes, maybe no NHS scans as Bath people more likely to be able to pay, but Chippenham not posh at all (moved to Chippenham to buy house, would never have managed where we were before ). Maybe they just have different priorities for their pennies. Anyway, I will stop whinging now, otherwise the care does seem to be good! Good luck with drying out phone, worked for DH after he managed to leave it on the roof of our car overnight and got full of dew! flynn, hope you are on better form soon, you're getting more than your fair share

daisy5 · 17/12/2008 10:50

ermintrude - I'm sure every country has it's pluses and minuses when it comes to antenatal and post natal care. And I think you are right, that the huge range of standards can be quite disturbing and stressful for the mother-to-be, especially ones who hear how much detail their friend in Oxfordshire may see on the screen during their 15min 'nuchal' scan, when they don't get anything like that with their 5 min 'dating' scan in Liverpool, let alone their poor friend in Chippenham gets nowt and is told 'you'll be fine darlin', after all your 29'!! I think the inconsistency of care throughout the UK is the most peculiar thing.

There are also aspects of the care I really like here. I feel on the whole, mothers are reasonably empowered to choose their 'way', and midwifes attempt to follow birth plans etc.

But only having had one child, I am far from an expert.

In New Zealand, apparently maternity care providers 'compete' for customers. The government gives $3,000 to whomever provides the maternity care to a 'customer' - so providers compete for pregnant mums (can't you just imagine the advertising slogans you could use to reel 'em in - 'push with pleasure at BabyPro'!) I can see that they are trying to achieve a scenario where the best care providers get the larger practices, but it's not hard to see where this might 'fall' down. Although, I don't know the finer details about what happens when more expensive care is required due to complications and really shouldn't be poking (dreadful pun) fun at them.

You could also check out ebay for dresses - that's where I picked up mine.

And, horror of horrors, HEARTBURN is here (tortured wailing commences). I only had it for 2-3 months last time. 5 months of drinking that disgusting Gaviscon will be horrible!!!

Oh and 'looouise, cote* is so right - there is healthy worry and unhealthy worry. The first three months are tough as there are obvious concerns, but after that you have to let some of it just wash over you (que sera sera).

CoteDAzur · 17/12/2008 12:24

Thank you all for your kind words I'm feeling good, and the occasional pang of pain at place of amnio puncture has now passed. Actually feeling brave enough to take DD out in a few hours - she has cabin fever and is driving me crazy. Currently playing tennis with a plastic ball against the Christmas tree

mica23 · 17/12/2008 12:32

Hello Bumps and Mums!Just spend an hour catching up with post!!Glad all is going well with everyone.Excelent news Cote that amnio went well. And yes, they are big, fat layers! It really hurts!!
Had mine 12 weeks scan today.Baby seems fine but I was expecting them to check more things like they did with DD.They just took the mesurments for nuchal and adjusted the due date by 3 days even thou they said its a week off!!The picture quality was reakky pore too..Never mind..We could see hands and feet and that baby is moving.DD was really good but completely uniterested in procedings. Now have to wait for eithe the phonecall or the letter. If its good news letter, bad news-call..
We are bilingual household, well, Im Croatian and DP is Irish.I talk to DD in Croatian but sometines I feel like Im waisting my time.I havent given up yet thou.Funny thing is that as I have been here 17 years not used my native language much I had to buy a dictionary for myself!!
Told family that we are expecting and SIL asked; was it an accident? And MIL asked; is that good news!?!GRRR!

mica23 · 17/12/2008 12:35

I really have to check my posts in the future!!I rush and end up missing half the letters!!Apologies!

daisy5 · 17/12/2008 13:11

mica - you reminded me that my Dad's first response to being told that he would be a grandparent for the first time was 'was it planned?'

cote - glad you are feeling better today.

mica23 · 17/12/2008 13:29

Yes, not really the delighted response one was hoping for!!

flynn1984 · 17/12/2008 13:46

Hiya all

Just a wee message...need to tell someone...not sure if you remember me saying how I will be out of a job at end of january, well there is a job in the Council (where I work at the moment)as a clerical assist for 23 months and I have an extremely good chance of getting it through our redeployment register got an informal meeting with the boses on Monday afternoon....just wondering if I can have a few fingers and toes crossed for me hopefully this will lift my pre-baby blues

daisy5 · 17/12/2008 13:50

mica - it didn't take long for him to become to be the delighted, besotted, doting Grandad. I laugh now when I think of his first response

flynn - lots and lots and lots of crossed fingers&toes coming your way
