Ineedmorechoc - Have I had dental treatment whilst pregnant? Ho yes, only yesterday in fact. Last week - when I was just over 10 wks preg - I had an infected abcess in a root canal which had been filled and crowned years ago. This week, following 7 days of antibiotics, I had the tooth out. 45 minutes of pulling my jaw this way and that - horrid! I checked online and with the dentist, and local anaesthesia is fine. They tend not to use mercury fillings in pregnancy because that can cross the placenta, so that's worth checking but most dentists are pretty good about that stuff. Mine told me that even x-rays are fine and you don't need those lead aprons - the rays aren't pointed anywhere near the uterus anyway - but they use them as extra reassurance. If you need fillings, you need fillings. So while I'll wait till after the birth to have whatever replacement I need (if I can afford one!) necessary treatment is done in pregnancy as a matter of course. Hope your poorly teeth hold out over Christmas and don't limit your consumption of lovely festive food!

June2009 · 04/12/2008 12:43

Sorry, this is a bit of a long and "me" post...

Have you guys already chosen what type of birth you are having and wether you have booked your antenatal classes and place of birth?
I don't feel really "followed", I met "a" midwife at week 9 to have blood tests done, she's given me another midwife's number to call after the scan who I should bring my notes to.
Had my scan yesterday, asked for my notes and were told that they wouldn't be given to me before the second scan at the end of January and that I should call the (new) midwife after that.

I know where I want to give birth (midwife led near hospital close to home.), though they don't do epidurals which I haven't really thought about but i haven;t booked it yet, I thought I would do this through the midwidfe but if I'm not meeting her until February I don't know!
I haven't booked any antenatal classes yet.

StrawberrySam, great news about your scan, esp after all those worrying bleeds. We so often hear about women that happens to but it's always such a worry if it happens to be you. Blood in the urine could be simply a little bit of that bleed - I remember being told there was blood in my urine and it was because I was on my period - even though I was using tampons! - those sticks they use can detect the tiniest amount. UTIs are q common in pregnancy so that's the other option but sounds like the nurse wasn't concerned so I'd leave it unless you get other symptoms like pain on urination, itching, etc.

June, can you go to your midwife team - mine's based at my GPs but they're part of the local health authority - and have a proper chat about everything? It really sounds as though you're not being given full info, and there's no excuse. Here we have hand-held notes which we keep with us at each appointment so we have all our records, blood results, scan results etc.

So saying, you don't need to make all decisions about the birth before January, or even a while after that. Chatting to midwives, and to friends who've had babies in your area, reading some good books about childbirth and going to see local hospitals/ mw units etc, will all help you make up your mind. BUT don't listen to friends who want you to have THEIR ideal birth experience - anyone who says - "You must be mad to go to a mw unit, you'll definitely need an epidural, I can guarantee that" or "But you MUST have an active birth in water with a doulah and no pain relief, no probs" - is not being a great help.

At my booking appt, the midwife marked in all the appointments I'll be having at different stages of pregnancy, all being well and straihtforward, and all telephone numbers and contacts are at the front, so that basic info should be available to you too! Good luck with finding out what you need to know.

Ineedmorechocolatenow · 04/12/2008 14:03

Thanks for the reassurance ermintrude, tho I don't envy you, you poor thing. I'm not too bad with the dentist usually, tho I think if I'd had a dentist trying to yank out a tooth for that long would put me off for life . I'll talk to the dentist about mercury fillings before he comes anywhere near me!

Poor old you June2009. It does sound as tho you've been left to your own devices a bit. I agree with everything ermintrude has said. Don't feel pressured into doing anything. Go with what you feel is right. I did have an epidural with DS, but then he was back-to-back so was horrendously painful (but they knew he was back-to-back early on, so I knew it wouldn't be a standard birth before hand). If all is good with your pregnancy, then there's nothing stopping you going to a midwife-led-unit. I'm all for you having a birth that you want, not one that's been recommended by friends. You have no idea how you'll feel when you give birth; everyone reacts differently. You do what makes you feel most comfortable.

Anyway, I'm off for jacket potato and pasterised brie...... lovin' those carbs!

Hi everyone! Its been a while but been very, very busy..Doesent help that DD is still getting up at 5 so Im shattered all day!!Im really lucky as my dentist is really good.Dental treatment being free in pregnancy and for the first year of baby's life I have been making most of it.
June-by all means , for yourself and your baby you have to do things the way you want to.Its a personal expirience and personal decision. But try to leave your options open as much as you can; baby's dont know of our birth plans and tend to come out their own way and in their own time...

ermintrude13 · 04/12/2008 14:33

mica, you only get free dental treatment if you have an NHS dentist, and we can't get one of those round here for love nor money. If I have to have something big done I'm going to try to register with someone but it won't be easy - you have to hover around several lists hoping that someone dies!

i'm not looking forward to the early mornings - ds wakes up 6.30 on the dot these days but used to be 5.10 EVERY morning for two years so i can cope with 6.30. but night feeds and early wakings are going to finish me off this time round!

mica23 · 04/12/2008 14:55

Yes, I know..I kind of try and think about it.Sometimes I think that I must be completely crazy (DD will be 21 months when new baby arrives)! But you know how it is; you get so much more than you put in..it might be double the work but its going to be double the rewards..Or so I keep telling myself How old is DS?

mica23 · 04/12/2008 14:56

Duh!That was supposed to be; try NOT to think about it!

Carbs, mmmm!I just want potatoes, pasta and bread and butter these days.Cant decide which part of my belly is carbs and which is the baby..
It seems that I will be the last one to have a scan; 17th of December..

ermintrude13 · 04/12/2008 15:54

mica, ds is now 6 yrs old and has been a 6.30 waker for about 2 yrs now, so i'm used to it - and he can get himself up, go downstairs on his own at weekends. so it's going to be a big culture shock getting back into sleeplessness. mind you, there's 4.6 yrs between dd and him but she's a great sleeper so with ds we were starting from a very privileged position and it wasn't too bad... but i seem to NEED soooo much sleep right now. could drop off happily at any minute. apart from anything else, it's the only time i don't feel like i'm about to puke . i guess we'll just adapt, like people do, and who knows, these new ones might be little snoozers!

Ineed gimme gimme gimme pasteurised brie - where from? I miss it so..

dreamydowler · 04/12/2008 16:00

wow pastuerised brie where can I get that from ??? Anyone got any suggestions for pate without liver in it this xmas? Ive seen some very nice non alcoholic wines online too I love my cheeses and pates would be great to have some brie

Tee2072 · 04/12/2008 16:04

Apparently, dreamydowler all types of pate are bad. I don't know why, but I did read that somewhere!!

What crap Christmas this will be...no booze, no pate, no smoked salmon (although I've read that might be okay) and because of my diabetes 'acting up' no chocolates! Might as well stay home from the in laws and pout!

Ineedmorechocolatenow · 04/12/2008 16:31

Ha Ha! I feel very powerful with my knowledge and my fridge full of pasteurised brie...

The brand President does pasteurised brie and camembert. They even do a 'lighter' version of both. They sell President pretty much everywhere (my local Tesco sells them and it's not a big one).

Make sure you look through the ingredients on the back to check it's pasteurised....

That's my Christmas pressie to you lovely ladies xx

Cool!! Thanks Ineed!! You rock!

Mhairi100 · 04/12/2008 16:39

Hello everyone! My bio is below. Having a bit of a rubbish week - my morning sickness is now worse than it's ever been and I don't understand it as I'd got away fairly lightly until Monday. I'm 15 weeks tomorrow, so what's this all about? I've got tomorrow off and friends coming for Christmas lunch on Sat and I really want to enjoy it, but at the moment I want to be tucked up in bed all weekend with a bucket at hand . Though the lovely news of the week is that I got to hear the baby's heartbeat at the midwife's for the first time on Mon (I was quite emotional, which is probably silly!) so I keep reminding myself of that. I'm with you all on the 'Christmas without pate' distress, I really really want it and I want it sooner than I'm going to get it! Also, major respect to those of you managing with wee ones in addition to your pregnancy, I don't know how you do it!

Mhairi100, 29, due 30 May (revised date!) first baby. I live in Wiltshire with my DH of 1 1/2 years and I'm a marketing manager. My family are in Scotland (too far away ), DH's family is just two hours away though and are fabulous so that makes up a bit for it. And my folks know the bed in the spare room is always made up for them!

Mhairi100 · 04/12/2008 16:41

Great brie news!!!

Ineedmorechocolatenow · 04/12/2008 16:45

Poor old you Mhairi100 I hope the sickness goes away soon. I had it pretty bad when pregnant with DS, tho I seem to have got away very lightly this time round. I really hope you are not one of those unfortunate ones who have it all the way through your pregnancy. Mine did fade after 14 weeks or so, but then came back at the end of the pregnancy again. It is shit.

chocciedooby · 04/12/2008 17:01

Ineedmore choc - Hi. No worries about the fillings. I was in the dentists at 6 weeks pg this time around and had to have a filling. They told me the injection would have no affect on the baby. I think it's the xrays you have to be careful of.

chocciedooby · 04/12/2008 17:17

Had my nuchal scan this morning.Forgot how annoying it is to wait for 2 hours even though we had a private consultants appt. Anyway, shouldn't be moaning.
All went really well. Result was 1:1380 which apparently is the same as it would be for a 15 year old so we were both thrilled.

Saw and heard the heart beat which we were told was very strong. Could see the bladder, heart, fingers, toes etc. Even saw the umbilical cord. It was amazing. It all seems so real now and I can relax a little more having seen my little one happy inside
I still find it all amazing how quickly they develop. So much is going on inside our bodies that it's no wonder we suffer ms, tiredness etc. It is all so worth it and I feel on cloud nine now.

llynnnn · 04/12/2008 17:26

hi all

really enjoyed reading all your bio's and remembering who's who in my head! I'll add mine to the list in a mo

Mhairi - hope your sickness passes really quickly, you kind of expect it at first but its gutting that its still here now

I am also really missing pate. i love it!! my mum brought some into the hospital for me the day after i had dd and i really enjoyed it, i spent the rest of the night feeling really bad though in case it would affect her through the breast milk! i never did find out tbh, although she is fine!

ermittrude - i'm with you on worrying about sleepless nights and early mornings again. we have JUST got dd sleeping through the night until 7am reliably after 2 years of it being very hit and miss, and i dont know how i'll cope going back to very little sleep again!! i guess you just manage!

strawberrysam, little sarah and june - congrats on your great scans!

does anyone feel very emotional? i can cry at anything at the mo!! my dd has a cold (thats all, nothing serious!) and earlier i felt so upset for her i couldve burst into tears!!

June - have you had your booking in app yet? at mine they went through everything with me and gave me loads of stuff to read through detailing my choice of birth places, when i would have an app with the midwifes and scans etc, i got to tell them what type of care i wanted etc (ie midwife or consultant led etc). It does seem like you have been missed. if i were you i'd ring the midwifes again and just double check when this info will be available

Tee2072 · 04/12/2008 17:29

llynnnn emotional doesn't even begin to cover it! I cried at a book I was reading the other day, one of those shoot 'em find the bad guys books, because the main character mentioned he was a orphan! I am dreading the 'feel good' Xmas adverts on TV!

llynnnn · 04/12/2008 17:30

sorry forgot my bio:

llynnnn - i'm 27, have a dd 2.4 and have been married for five years. i live in Lincolnshire and have all my family very close by who are absolute stars and I can always rely on. we will def be finding out the sex as dh would love a little boy, i'm happy either way. my pg so far has been fine, just the normal tiredness and a little queasy so I count myself lucky so far!

bigcar · 04/12/2008 18:31

Great to hear everyones good scan news

MrsMcJnr, I have an 8 year gap between dd1 and dd2, 15 months between dd2 and ds, 5 years between ds and dd3 and 3 years between dd3 and dc5. The only thing I have learnt is that no age gap is particularly easier or harder than any other, it comes down to what you are comfortable and happy with as a family. I think we have been fairly lucky that apart from dd1, they have all been reasonably calm, amenable babies that just seem to have slotted into their place in the family.

Am I the odd one out? I really can't stand pate and am looking forward to this christmas so dh can't force me to try some (as he does every year) just in case i've changed my mind Having said that, I always do my best to get him eating sprouts

Another one here sobbing at the drop of a hat. Ms is well on it's way out now, just a shame the insomnia isn't going too.
