Hi all,
Thanks for that link. My dh suffers from terrible hay fever and I have a few allergies so I guess the Crunchy Nut Cornflakes will ahve to wait for now. I think this bit of research is only quite new though as I was advised of it when preg with dd and a friend who had a baby 6 mths before wasn't. Everything in moderation though. I think we can all worry too much. Liver is full of good iron as well as bad vit A so don't worry. My parents all found it an odd one too as they were positively encouraged to eat liver! Sorry to start any complexes in my quest for legit crunchy nut cornflakes.

Cooperoo · 17/03/2005 14:30

I am just cooking raisin and oat cookies for tomorrow. Can I cook the cake today and ice it tomorrow? Will it still seem fresh and nice. Am worried I won't have time tomorrow as have too many jobs to do first thing. DH and I always eat the cake when it is made so I can't really remember how long they last? Should be OK though shouldn't it? Just a sponge cake with ALOT of vanilla butter icing tomorrow.
Give me strength not to lick the cake mix with the raw egg in too. Will have to give that to DH.

On the liver issue, a friend of mine was talking to a doctor at a wedding recently and he said you would have to eat mountains of liver for you to accumulate too much vitamin A in your body. So I'm guessing the odd bit of liver now and again won't do any harm.

Oooh, red wine. Now that sounds better than cabbage. And luckily I've got friends coming round tonight, at least one of whom will arrive clutching a bottle of red.

JonahB · 17/03/2005 14:53

Coop, to answer your peanut qtn, as I understood it, you are supposed to avoid all nuts, especially peanuts. Even more especially if there is a nut allergy in your family. However, i think this whole food avoidance thing is such a personal issue and everyone has their own perameters of what they think is okay. Personally, I feel that there is a lot of paranoia surrounding some food groups. Like you and Lummox say, your parents were encouraged to eat liver. Advice seems to change for each generation of mothers and for geographical location. My Thai friend thought that the English were even more bananas that she already suspected when she was told to avoid nuts and shellfish. That makes up a huge chunk of their diet in Thailand. So dont feel guilty about eating the odd bit of liver, but if it will cause you stress, maybe you should avoid the nuts.

mrsflowerpot · 17/03/2005 15:11

My dh had bad asthma as a child (persists now but milder) and I was told both last time and this to avoid peanuts because of it, apparently there is a suspected link between peanuts/peanut allergy and asthma. However i've been told it's just peanuts, others are fine. And re the liver thing, my mum and MIL both say they were told to eat it twice a week in pregnancy! my midwife last time told me you would have to eat mountains of it to affect the baby, but I'm still steering clear.

redheadmum · 17/03/2005 15:12

I had massive cravings for liquorice when I was pregnant with Dd it was only v late in the pregnancy when I was told you weren't meant to eat it!

I checked out the research though, and it had to be absolutely massive amounts for it to make a difference so felt better after reading that.

Can I just get back to the bump thing again! Have just been told AGAIN how big my bump is...grr...it's stupid cos it almost makes me paranoid that my dates are wrong etc etc, though mostly worried I have a big baby or eating too much chocolate (she says munching her dairy milk). Am starting to wonder what post birth body I'm creating....

MrsWednesday · 17/03/2005 15:39

Did your midwife measure your bump yesterday redheadmum? Mine did at my last appointment and she said it was fine for my dates, so at least I have a ready-made answer for when rude people say the same to me.

I'm also quite short, so I'm sure this makes a difference as to how much my bump sticks out - met up with some friends who are due around the same time. They are both taller than me and their bumps didn't stick out half as much as mine did. Would this also apply to you?

redheadmum · 17/03/2005 15:52

no MW didn't measure bump, though my scans have all confirmed my due date. I'm about average height - 5'5"....but anyway, everyone does look different with their bump

I just feel it's rude to comment on my body and people eye my bump like somehow it's my fault that it looks big. (ie am getting fat). Think I am a bit paranoid just cos I didn't get back to pre-pregnancy weight before getting pregnant again, so it's probably more about me feeling bigger and getting more annoyed when people comment. Still hate people feeling my bump! (when else would perfect strangers come up to you and feel your belly....?)

MrsWednesday · 17/03/2005 16:14

It is rude. But for some reason people think you become public property once pregnant, so they are happy to touch you, comment on weight, food consumption etc.

Perhaps it's best just to say something along the lines of 'well, I'm pregnant - what's your excuse?' the next time anyone says anything about your size.

redheadmum · 17/03/2005 16:23

too right!

it's too nice a day to work, think I'm gonna try and scooch off early...would be nice to sit in the garden for a bit..

hope tmw like this as home with Dd..have got plans for tent and picnic scenario

organised Dh to go to IKEA with me too, am going to buy more organising stuff (or money wasting devices as he calls them). Obsessed with getting a chest of drawers to put clothes in for babios 2

Cooperoo · 17/03/2005 16:23

Oh red, It is funny isn't it. I would just love for someone to notice I was pregnant instead of presumably just looking fat. KVG, I will never have a kids party at my house. I have only had one kids party and that wasn't at my house but that decision was all ready made signed and sealed by dh and I before we got home. I have never needed a cup of tea more in my whole life.
Didn't know about the liquorice??!! I hate the stuff anyway tho so that is OK. I am only avoiding peanuts too not all nuts. It is so confusing isn't it. I just went to the shop to treat myself at last to a proper cake box type thing but they had sold out. I have been meaning to get one for years and never do cos of the cost. I am annoyed now. Cake will have to cope in cling film over night as usual. Never mind. Have to go and get the quiche and salad ready for tea. Yummy.

good luck with party Coops - v impressed with baking skills...mine are: go to marks and sparks -pick up cake - purchase

I can only agree on the whole party thing...much prefer venue away from house - far too stressful having a shed load of toddlers ransacking through home and zoning in on most dangerous things there. When my Dd birthday comes around (not til Oct thankfully) will be hiring a hall or similar

well am gonna leave now - work sucks!

tribpot · 17/03/2005 17:01

Back from the midwife and all is well there. Heard the heartbeat again, yippee! And she measured the bump and said "hmm, 26" - 26 what I don't know, but if weeks, then it's spot on as I will be 26 weeks tomorrow.

I assume I must just look fat as no-one has attempted to touch the bump and I must say, the first person who tries is likely to be getting a slap round the chops. So perhaps people can sense that too and are staying well clear, definitely their best plan.

Asked the midwife about the hospital's policy on sending partners home if you're not in active labour and indeed that is what they do. Forewarned is forearmed as they say, I told the mw I would be going home too in those circs and she seemed reasonably happy with that, she says women labour better at home anyway (more relaxed, better access to chocolate?)

No news from bro, will report back in later!

Redhead - chortling at your baking skills, mine are equally advanced (except I have to take the extra time to look for a wheat-free cake, M&S do a nice one).

Trib, glad things went well with the midwife. I think the number of centimetres your bump measures from pelvic bone to the top of the bump corresponds to the number of weeks you are.

Lynny - a baby scrummier than a chocolate eclair? Blimey, she must have been truly scrumptious .

Cooperoo, hope the party goes well tomorrow.

I'm off now, back on Monday so don't talk too much and have a lovely weekend everyone.x

(Hoping for good news for your DB Trib when I come back).

GOOD NEWS!!

Yes, just spoken to my step-dad and by unanimous consent, they have been given permission to adopt the baby. The panel felt that if my bro did turn out to have any health problems, they would be well able to handle them along with the baby (quite true in my opinion) - and equally to deal with any probs which may result from the baby's exposure to Foetal Alcohol Syndrome. Which I might say will not be preventing me from having a celebratory glass of wine tonight!

Such a massive relief as I was convinced the panel were going to go against them.

HURRAH!!

JonahB · 17/03/2005 18:37

Evening All,

Trib, glad the mw appointment went well. CONGRATS on your fab news about your brother. I am so pleased for you and your family!

Mrs Wed, I definitely want to meet up with you again before we are due, so we can compare our enormous bumps together

Red, I had the same obsession - we bought a set of drawers from Ikea for the same purpose. Our was about £75 and almost as tall as me. I just didnt want to spend huge amounts on it, so this one was perfect. Best of luck in Ikea-of-Hell though. My DH and I were so proud of each other. We got round the entire store without a single bicker or raised voice (unlike the other poor couples who were glaring at each other across the sofas and coloured mirrors).

Cooperoo · 17/03/2005 18:38

That is FANTASTIC news. How exciting that common sense has prevailed!!!!!
I am so pleased.
I just want to say that if I was in the UK I would be straight into Tescos, Asda or M&S for dd's cake! Last year we had a joint party with the same friend and we both ordered cakes from the local bakery. My friend had the standard Happy B'day one which was fantastically OTT with pink icing etc and I chose a piglet design for dd. When I went to pick it up though the fridge had dripped on the design so I had to say I didn't want it as it looked like Piglet had been run over! I ended up racing home and baking one for her with what I had in the cupboard and sticking a candle on it. DD was second on the Happy Bday singing, blowing candles malarky and my cake was SO small by comparison everyone went 'Ahhhhhhh'. It was a bit embarrassing. This year, as a result, we are both baking our own.

Cooperoo · 17/03/2005 18:40

Lynny - LOL about the chocolate eclair!! Your posts always make me giggle.

JonahB · 17/03/2005 18:53

Coop, at least you have another mum to share the stresses of a birthday party with. I'm going to sign off now but best of luck with the baking and the party, I hope it all goes well.....

Cooperoo · 17/03/2005 19:00

Thanks Jonah, I am off to bed now so signing off too. It is lovely to share the party with someone else. To be honest I wouldn't bother for her 2nd otherwise.
Night night all and thanks for the good wishes.
Byeeeee
