uwila · 17/03/2005 11:24

Oh, if anyone is interested Iwhich I realise full we is unlikely), nanny saga continues here

MrsWednesday · 17/03/2005 11:30

Oh completely agree about the bump comments redheadmum. Have had lots of the same thing about my belly size, which is admittedly quite big, but hey, I'm pregnant, what do people expect? I think people forget how enormous you get right before the end too. Even my DH was at it last night (a swift punch soon sorted him out though ).

Good news about your appointment and the homebirth too! What will you do with your DD when the time comes? Will she just stay at home? Charleypops asked a question on another thread about waterbirths and the reasons people don't have them even after they've requested one, and I was just saying that for me, lying down in the water (bath not birthing pool admittedly) was extremely uncomfortable as moving around was the only way to stop it hurting.

Lynny, at my appointment a couple of weeks ago baby was breech. I think they can move about quite a lot though, especially if you've already had one baby. I feel quite a few kicks on my bladder - very uncomfortable.

MrsWednesday · 17/03/2005 11:40

Forgot to say thanks for all the iron-rich food info. Will be stocking up at the supermarket tonight.

Cooperoo · 17/03/2005 11:53

Hello all, getting in early today in an effort to keep up.
Where is Nab?
Glad the yoga was good KVG. I loved it and went back for ages with dd too. Was one of the few places you could take the baby without anyone minding at all. Got lots of support re b/f etc too. Was a lovely time thinking back.
Uwila - you have to give that nanny notice, it is eating away at you and not healthy for Alex like you say.
Trib - good vibes for your bro again.
Lynny - Nightmare about the headaches. Paracetamol isn't enough sometimes is it? Hope you are better now. I think there is still loads of time for the baby to move. Last appt I had (24weeks) I asked the m/w if she could tell what position the baby was in. She said not yet and that it would move loads between now and the due date. My bumps movements have really changed from kicks to 'movements' recently. It is quite exciting. Still get the kicks but not as many. I can see the kicks now too if in the bath etc. DD is still not interested but never mind. I think she finds it a bit freaky actually which is fair enough. I haven't had kicks in the bottom but have had some that felt like stamps right on my cervix. Very odd sensation.
Mrs W about your iron levels. It is common factor during pregnancy I believe. I think there is a liquid supplement which is supposed to be much better regarding the constipation factor. Sorry I don't know any more, I just remember that from last time. Might be worth asking a question on here.
I have been out to the supermarket today while my cleaner was here ( yes cleaner despite the fact I am a SAHM) and went to a Pie shop I have been meaning to go to for ages. Fab sausage roll to keep me going and bought a bacon quiche for tea. I can't wait. I haven't had quiche for years. They don't seem to do it here and had completely forgotten about it. I also ate a whole bar of Cherry Lindt chocolate (no eggs available) as dd started kicking off half way round the shop so I felt I deserved it.
DD's bday party tomorrow so I am off now to make biscuits and a cake so I can do the sandwiches etc tomorrow inbetween having my hair cut and renewing the library books. Phew.
They are doing maternity wear on This Morning at the mo and all the models have bigger bumps than me . There is a fab wrap dress from H&M for £20. Great.

tribpot · 17/03/2005 11:56

Mrs W - seems a shame the attitude was "low in iron, get an iron tablet down you". Dh takes a lot of supplements because his digestion is poor so he doesn't get all he needs from our diet but mostly I find the supplement industry is a total rip-off, persuading people to take tablets when they have no need to at all. Sorry - minor soapbox rant there, of course if you do need to up your iron levels and diet doesn't help, go for the tablets. But definitely try diet first.

Here's a little list of iron-rich foods . Liver - yummy yummy (not).

Uwila - I've now followed up on the nannygate threads and have to echo the other posters, she has to go. The eating thing - well, she's just making a rod for your back, which is clearly unacceptable.

I've been getting kicks in the delicate areas as well, feels most bizarre.

Off to the midwife this afternoon and then into town, so will report back on my bro when I return.

Lua - not sure about Tens machines, I just noticed the one on the Boots website said "not suitable for use in labour". Where did your dh get his from?

Cooperoo · 17/03/2005 11:59

Red - I am really jealous of your planned home water birth. I love love LOVED my water birth and it was fab for me. The only way I could move around easily was in the pool. It was wonderful. I am not thinking about my birth at the mo as it will make me cry. Waiting for an appt on mon to see if there is any news about where I can have the bump and if I can have gas and air etc. Will be posting like mad on Childbirth for help and support if there is no change. Scared!

Cooperoo · 17/03/2005 12:01

Trib - We aren't allowed liver anyway are we? Too high in Vit A I thought. I wait to be corrected.

tribpot · 17/03/2005 12:03

Ooh, Coop. No idea. I must find out though, cos the MIL (who rivals Uwila's nanny for "inflexible attitudes to nutrition") might spring this on me at some point. I am off to read Miriam Stoppard and will report in.

Btw, said MIL sent me an article from some crackpot nutrition mag yesterday saying folic acid shouldn't be taken on its own but as part of a B-vit supplement. Ha ha, can't wait to tell her I am not taking a folic acid supplement now anyway - of course I did in the first trimester (and it was a multi-vit supplement anyway) but now I see no reason why my diet shouldn't provide what I need, given I can eat proper food again now.

I shall return!

redheadmum · 17/03/2005 12:04

Mrs W - hi

I was in the bath too with my first and found it really good for pain relief, of course I had to get out to move around but the difference in pain levels was noticable. so this time around I was thinking of going the whole hog with a pool, and maybe water birth too - will see.

No, i don't want Dd around when I'm in real labour pain and giving birth..I don't think she's old enough to understand and it would distress me to have her see me in pain. My neighbours have been great and said they'll have her and also my childminder said that she'll have her (any time - even on the weekend!). Will maybe think of one more person that could act as back up to the back up and that should sort it. All baby has to do is come at a convenient time! I had Dd very nicely within a day...let's hope this one gets the message.....

yes, my Dh mentioned that the bump was bigger this time around too ....am afeared that his genes have overtaken this time - he was an 8lb 12 oz baby (Noooo...)

tribpot · 17/03/2005 12:09

I'm back.

You're quite right, Coop. Miriam says no to liver because of the vitamin A. What a shame!

Mind you, Miriam also says "The following foods should be avoided in pregnancy ... sweets and chocolate bars". I suppose technically we could claim that since chocolate eggs are not chocolate bars they are clearly acceptable

redheadmum · 17/03/2005 12:10

Coop - I've totally missed any discussion about what you're going through potential birth wise...sorry you can't get yr home birth...I still think my lot are quite cagey about the whole thing, even though I've had one already.

I don't think you're meant to have liver either - isn't it because of the Vitamin A?

TENS machines - yes you have to get one that's designed for labour and birth. Boots do a hire scheme, as do NCT

JonahB · 17/03/2005 12:32

Afternoon All, Glad we are all chatty today....

Lynny, dont know if this is any help, but i was breech at my last MW appointment. She said I only need to be concerned if I'm still breech at 36 weeks.

Coop - good luck with DD's party tomorrow. How old will she be?

Mrs W, as a veggie, I keep an eye on iron intakes. I am sure that a lot of breakfast certeal is iron fortified. Also, all dark green vegs (broccoli, spinach, cabbage etc)is good for iron levels. Oh, and chocolate. Chocolate is definitely full of every sort of nutrient and vitamin your bubba needs......

Cooperoo · 17/03/2005 12:34

Miriam clearly doesn't know it all then. No chocolates or sweets . Has she never BEEN pregnant. No-one got back to me about not being allowed peanuts either. I was told you should avoid peanuts if you ahve allergies in your family but then someone mentioned peanut cookies. Have I been forgoing my Crunchie Nut Cornflakes for nothing.
My post pregnancy meal is going to be Brie, Stilton, pate and crunchy nut cornflakes. MMMM

MrsWednesday · 17/03/2005 12:37

Trib, thanks for that list, I've printed it off. You're right, there was absolutely no mention of diet to resolve it, it was just a case of 'get some tablets down your neck, and tough shit (literally!) if you get constipation'. Shame about the liver...I love it.

Redheadmum, can understand what you mean about your DD, it could be quite distressing for her. My DS got upset when a midwife came round to the house to ask me some questions, so I can't imagine he'd cope very well with me in labour!

I hired my TENS from Boots last time, and will probably do the same this time too.

Cooperoo · 17/03/2005 12:37

Hiya Jonah. DD will be 2 on the 24th June. She is sharing a party with a friend at a local soft play place. Will be fun I hope. We did the same last year and I was EXHAUSTED by the end of it and desperate for a cup of tea, and they were only one then. I might skip parties for the next few years after this one......
When do they ask for parties themselves....how long can I get away with it for??

Cooperoo · 17/03/2005 12:39

Red - I won't bore you with my lack of labour choices yet as I will be filling you ALL in on Monday whether you like it or not after my appt at the hospital.

tribpot · 17/03/2005 12:40

I refer to Miriam's book as "How To Have No Fun At All In Your Pregnancy". And yes, amazingly, she claims to have given birth twice. I reckon she's fibbing.

Re: peanuts, I have been neither seeking them out nor avoiding them (the occasional peanut M&M may have passed my lips). Dh has food intolerances rather than allergies, which is my excuse for being lax. Now I have a craving for peanut M&Ms, arghhh.

Coop, it was me that mentioned the peanut cookies. I've been eating peanuts, peanut butter etc throughout this pregnancy and with DS, but I don't have any history of nut allergies in my family so I assumed I'd be ok.

Chocolate coated cabbage for tea tonight. Yummy.

KVG - I just didn't bother reading any of the nutrition bits in "What to Expect ... ", esp as in the first trimester we had to survive on a diet of ready meals from Sainsburys due to my inability to tolerate the smell of food cooking + dh being too ill to take up the reins himself. God knows what I shall do next time around, I'm not putting bubs on a diet of chicken jalfrezi for three months!

MrsW, I feel obliged to tell you of the great iron benefit to be had from red wine as well

lummox · 17/03/2005 13:31

hi folks,

all this food stuff making me feel a bit guilty - have been eating the odd bit of liver. Worse - had been really dopey and not really connected peanut butter with peanuts so eating that even though I get hayfever.

is there any evidence that peanut eating is connected with allergies? i don't know anything about it, but would have thought it a good idea for the baby to get stuff like that through the placenta first so that s/he gets used to it.

also, my mum and MIL were both advised that they should eat liver.

[confused emoticon]

Lummox, I'm quite sure the odd bit of liver won't have done you any harm at all. As I recall, too much Vit A is bad for the baby - hence why they advise not taking ordinary multi-vitamin supplements but ones specifically for pregnancy, which have no extra vitamin A. Obviously you are still going to consume some through your diet.

Have a look at this but don't get too alarmed. As KVG says, probably best to avoid the liver from now on though.
