Hi LadyL - would be weird if we were in St Marys at the same time! But thought you were moving? Think maybe we had a pretty short session with the mw as I didn't have many questions either. Also didn't have a scan, as had one 10 days earlier at the Fetal Medicine Clinic.

Am pretty much over my cold now (thank goodness) and am loving the London weather today - roll on summer!!

Kiwifruit · 02/04/2005 17:56

Is anyone using a birth doula? I've been researching them today, as we have decided that a private midwife is a little pricey for us. The main reason I wanted a private midwife was to have someone I already knew at the birth and to be an advocate if we need it (neither DH or me are very good at stomping our feet when push comes to shove!) and a doula seems like a good option for that at a fraction of the cost of a private midwife. Also, private midwifes without insurance are really birth partners at the hospital, which is what a doula is. Have also found a couple of doulas who are also registered mws (although no prices on their website...).

Would be interested to hear if anyone is planning to use a doula, or has with a previous birth...

Just added my 21 and a bit week scan to stats thread. After that my care is (from memory, bit dodgy at the mo):
24wk - mw
28wk - mw
32wk - mw
34wk - mw
then 2wkly to 38wks, then weekly. She said to see the GP at any time inbetween if I wanted, but have always found them less help than mw!
Ds1 away with dh on mini rugby tour, so wasting time until Dr Who with ds2!! No fights to sort out - bliss!!!

Franch, have you tried an osteopath with your back? I see a brill one who does cranial on the kids, and my back hasn't had a twinge for ages - normally v dodgy lower back. He also sorted out a friend whose pelvis 'sprung' with her 3rd, and she had no probs at all with her 4th - could be worth a go if you're in pain already.

Saw homeopath with ds2 today (God, I sound like a real sw london mum!!!) and she said she could do lots for me pre labour, which I hadn't really thought about.

Not sure about hypnobirthing or doula, although have considered both. Think I 'll just take my chances with kingston mws (half of them are mums at school, which could be interesting.....!

Sorry to waffle on, not capable of being concise at the mo!!

Kiwifruit - we WERE planning to move, but the woman selling the house we wanted has decided not to sell it now . To be honest, I didn't really want to have a baby in a 1-bed flat, but I am v.happy with care from GP and St Mary's has a good reputation for maternity, so perhaps it's for the best!

mummyhill · 03/04/2005 09:50

I think they must have changed the way they do things my appointments are not nearly as frequent this time round is this just for second timers? I personnally would like to see a bit more of the mw team as i need a little extra reasurance this time round as i had a miscarriage last year and feel that any little niggles, doubts and queries i have this time are being ignored. When i had dd the worst thing i had to worry about was indegestion this time round has been horrendous!!!

zubb · 03/04/2005 10:55

I have a lot less appointments this time even compared to my second. I think with my second it was very similar to the first, but I think they have changed guidelines recently. Here we see only the midwife now rather than shared appointments with the doctor. So far it's been (or will be)-
9wks - booking in with midwife
13 wks - scan at hospital
16 weeks - midwife
21 weeks - scan at hospital
22 weeks - midwife
I don't know the rest, we just make an appointment when the last one has finished.
I see the same midwife throughout as she is the community midwife attached to the surgeery, and the likelihood is that she will be the midwife at the birth as it is a homebirth. Have to say though that it didn't bother me that I didn't know the midwife at the birth for ds1, and if my usual midwife isn't around for this one, then anyone will do.

moschops · 03/04/2005 17:29

mine have been as follows

8 weeks booking appt with MW
12 weeks first scan
17 weeks appt with MW
scan on 29th of april

then i make appts as and when my midwife tells me.........and this is my first baby. i have got more advice from this site and my friends than i have from my midwife.

mummyhill · 04/04/2005 08:09

I saw the community midwife when i found out i was PG, i went to the hospital at 9weeks (for an early scan after the problems last year) I then went back to the hospital at 12 weeks for booking no scan though as i had one at nine weeks and have an appointemnt with community midwife today. Next scan on 15th April will wait and see how often they intend to see me after this though as when i asked they were really vague about it.

mummyhill · 04/04/2005 08:12

Moschops sorry to hear you aren't getting as much support off your midwife, that is dreadful especially as this is your first. Don't hesitate to ask we will answer as many questions as we can for you.

On another note should we be thinking about a new thread again? If so how do you do it and i will happily have a go.

moschops · 04/04/2005 09:10

oh i'm ok...i actually feel for others having their first who aren't as lucky as me. my best friend has a twelve year old and a one year old, i have two friends with babies under three months. if i worry about things then i phone them and its reassuring when they tell me things are normal, or if not they tell me to phone the midwife. i have seen two different midwives and the first one was a darling....i just hope i get her next time i go!!!
