Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

Hi all! I was lucky with DS and had only a five hour labour and got through with a TENS machine plus gas and air. Must admit though the thought of doing it all again in six months is starting to niggle a little bit and I have already thought that if there's time I may treat myself to an epidural!! I just felt so out of control towards the end last time as things were pretty painful!
Piccadilycircus I'm very envious of your house move We had a valuation done today of ours and it was rather less that we had hoped. We really need to move as we have only two bedrooms at present but there are so many great things about the house eg view, schools etc that we are in a tricky situation. Oh well, whatever is meant to be! On a better note I've timed this baby well re maternity leave - being a teacher I can finish for the summer in July, have two months at home before my due date and get paid for the summer hols Just long enough to fret about epidurals and the need for a new house ......

VirtualFairy · 21/03/2005 17:12

i used a tens machine for my second labour and i was unsure how much good it did either, i ended up screaming for someone to talk the dam thing off as it was making my back muscles contract and me jump every 2 seconds - maybe it worked to distract and annoy me from the real pain of labour! although this time i am sticking to the gas and air.

i had an epidural with my first labour too and had no after effects from it at all but did experience severe shaking - uncontrollable trembling and shivering which was aparently an allergic reaction and well it was scary. so will not have one again by choice, but still would prefer to have one other than a genral if an emergency cesearean was needed.

pooka · 21/03/2005 19:15

My epidural experience was fine, although I also had pethidine to tide me over until the anaesthetist could get to me, and lots of gas and air. Generally, though, I just felt completely out of control and did tear pretty badly, involving a subsequent restitch when dd was 8 months old ( ).
This time - well I'm really hoping that staying at home, taking pregnancy yoga classes, getting the breathing nailed and past-experience will help me through. Last labour was quite quick anyway, if you discount the long long pre-labour pain stage which I naively thought was the real thing and will only have gas and air and pethidine available. We shall see.......
We're moving the week after easter (next week!). Can't wait, although would like to click my fingers and magically be there with everything packed/unpacked and cleaned etc.

franch · 21/03/2005 19:31

pooka - how on earth are you managing to fit in preg yoga with a toddler around?? Tips please! I did it last time but still haven't managed to fit in anything remotely physical this time.

If I'm honest I'm quite envious of those of you who are able to think in terms of 'treating yourself' to an epidural - the whole idea fills me with horror after last time - it would actually be nice if there was something less terrifying that I could resort to if things got desperate. And like you, VF, I hate the idea of giving birth under general anaesthetic (in the event of a c-section).

franch · 21/03/2005 19:50

Oh - talking of toddlers - anyone else finding it hard picking up their little ones these days? My back's really packing up on me. I've got the worst of both worlds - a 14mo who's not walking yet. Oh, and a 2nd-floor flat. Must improve my posture and bend my bloody knees!

mummyhill · 21/03/2005 23:40

I remember trying to use a tens machine I think i ended up throwing it at dh cause it was irritating rather than helpful. On the subject of toddlers try picking up a three year old who weighs 2.5 stone easily. Wasn't supposed to do it pre pregnancy due to a tendancy to slip discs now its a nightmare but you try telling them no when they have fallen over and scraped their knees. My physio recommended sitting down and making dd climb onto my lap what a joke, i won't have one of them for much longer!! Re maternity leave i have decided to take two weeks al end july and start matty leave on 1st august as I cannot afford to take extra leave and i sti down for my job i should be ok!!

Sallie · 22/03/2005 09:17

Draft contracts on our house signed but we still haven't found anywhere to move to - eek!
I have my booking appointment tomorrow with the midwives.

moschops · 22/03/2005 09:28

Sallie........have you been using the net to look for somewhere new to live?

i only ask because we spent three months looking round the local estate agents and found nothing. when i used Rightmove we put in the town we wanted to move to and our house came up. the seller was using an estate agent out of our area so we had never come across it.

it was fate........my dp had only being saying two days before how as a child he loved this building........i couldn't believe it when we found it was for sale and in our price range too.

pregnancy wise i can definitely feel my little one kicking me.......am actually concerned at how strong it is already. my MIL said she was terrified DP was going to kick his way out and it would appear my little bump is going to take after daddy. i'm feeling a lot more alive now, still get tired during the evening and cry at absolutely anything....but have more energy and have been cleaning like mad.

have started looking for a cot too, but want to buy second hand. have been given a moses basket and my friend kept her steam steriliser for me.

Sallie · 22/03/2005 09:33

Yes, using the net but nothing suitable has come up yet. We have done a lot of viewings and remain optimistic that the right house will be out there for us.
Good plan to buy a cot second hand although the advice is always to get a new mattress. I am not convinced about moses baskets - neither of my babies settled in the one I borrowed and they can be quite pricey. Both ds and dd slept with us for a few days and then went straight into their cots.

moschops · 22/03/2005 09:42

my friend is giving me the moses basket, she said her ds only tolerated it for two weeks and then she moved him into his cot. as its costing me nothing i thought i might as well have it. we have an aquaintance who runs a nursery shop so will be getting new mattresses from her, just think cots are extortionately priced, and am sure i can pick up a good quality one for about £50.

hope you find somewhere to live soon!! dp and i were in a very lucky position when we moved that we had bought our first house when we were young (i was 20 he was 18) so we were already on the property ladder. all my friends are totally priced out of the market and even renting is becoming unaffordable in our area. we moved two years ago and got in just in time i think.

i should really do some housework but the lure of mumsnet has got me!! my dp keeps saying 'don't worry about it. enjoy being able to sit on your backside while you can. you can kiss goodbye to that when the baby arrives!'......i think he might have a valid point!

VirtualFairy · 22/03/2005 11:05

i know what you mean moschops i have completely missed out on oportunity to ever buy a property as prices are so high now i really do wish i had got onto the property ladder when it may have been a possibility.
i am also moving too soon although have no idea where and no choice in the matter either as my council flat is in meed of major wall strenghtening and i have to be rehoused for at least 4 months - that could leave me moving back into my flat 8/9 months pregnant

also am very worried as have one of largest 2 bedroom flats available in this area and will most probably be put in smaller 2 bed which will leave me using living room as bedroom.

i will know how all you feel moving when pregnant is a stressful thing to do.

Boompi · 22/03/2005 11:11

I am sure I can feel something 'different' like a bubble bursting, in my lower abdomen - may be movement, may be wind!

Does any one else get mild cramping occasionally? I get it several times a day and assume it is my uterus/ligaments stretching. Any more experienced mums know about this? Im 16 weeks now.

I have also decided to take my annual leave as a lump before my due date so as to get as much time off after the birth as possible. New Boss doesnt know this though. I move departments in May and, as all the colour drained out of his face when I told him I was pregnant, I couldnt add that little bit of info just yet. Did tell him I wanted to leave by 22 July at latest -though he HAD glazed over by then though! Felt I almost had to apologise for my pregnancy!

Sallie · 22/03/2005 11:56

I can't feel any movement yet. Wish I could as its always much more reassuring when you can.

Piccalilli · 22/03/2005 12:12

I thought I felt something yesterday - it just felt 'different', almost like a fluttering inside - but I'm sure it's far too soon as I'm only 13+5.

On a completely unrelated subject - does anyone know eher I can find out about pregnancy yoga classes in my area? I'm getting no exercise at all at the moment as I usually do Step and just can't face it, but I would like to do something.

Boompi · 22/03/2005 12:49

Picalilli - you can try bwy.org.uk or yoga.co.uk. I plan to return to yoga now that I feel better too. Really looking forward to it. The midwife at my booking in appointment is an antenatal yoga teacher at a different centre to mine and had good chat with her. She suggested either antenatal specific classes of gentle yoga (let teacher know). She felt Astanga may make your pelvic floor muscles TOO strong and cause delayed 2nd stage/tears! Didnt know you could have pfm's that where too strong!!

franch · 22/03/2005 13:36

Anyone found any nice maternity bras? I've started a thread on this but no response so far

YOKEFLEET · 22/03/2005 13:50

Afternoon Ladies, just posted the following on the Oct thread but thought I'd keep u all updated too. Hope you are feeling better. I am now 12w+2d and I really want to bloom!!! Still really suffering with the tirdness/forgetfulness and nausea. Anyway today is my last day at work until next Wed as we are going to Wales for a break, so I told my boss about pg yesterday (I was dreading it as it is quite a large company 150+ employees but office based there are only 5 of us including the MD) So told MD and he was ok with it, also told him that I don't indend to return after the baby's born, and that really suprised him. It was weird telling him that bit as the only people I had discussed it with before where my dh and my parents, it made it more real somehow.
ah well I better stop waffling and get some work done!!

maretta · 22/03/2005 14:31

Hi - don't know if you'll all even remember me as I've not posted for eons. I decided I would wait until I'd had my scan and got the all clear.

The scan was wonderful and shocking. My first scan with ds was at 6 weeks and he was just a little white orb floating around in there. My first glimpse this time was of a little dancing dude - a proper baby . Suddenly it all seems real.

Anyway, I think I have some catch up reading to do....

YOKEFLEET · 22/03/2005 15:29

good to see you back Maretta I am glad everything was ok for you.

LadyLazarus · 22/03/2005 17:20

Aargh bugger! We had found a nice 3 bedroom house in a leafy part of London, which I had visions of turning one room into a nursery etc etc... just had a call saying that the woman doesn't want to sell anymore . Back to square one! Feel like I'm on the verge of tears, but perhaps a square or two or choccie will stave it away!!

As for maternity bras, I bought mine from M&S and they've been perfectly fine, although I feel that I may need to buy a bigger size before the 9 months is out!

pooka · 22/03/2005 22:14

Uhmmmm, haven't actually started yoga yet! but am on a waiting list for a wednesday night class, so dh will be at home. I'm also finding it really difficult getting dd in and out of her cot/car seat etc. Had a panic about three weeks ago when I atually felt my back give, and was in agony for ages, but appear to have recovered.
I felt some movement a couple of weeks ago, but nothing really to report more recently.
I have also been having really niggly cramps periodically - like a horrible heaviness. Didn't get this last time, but assume it's just uterus stretching. Have really developed a bit of a baby bump, albeit hidden under huge layer of fat!

pooka · 24/03/2005 17:35

It's been very quiet here - is there a new thread I don't know about. Hope everyone is feeling well.
Had next midwife appointment today. All well, very strong heartbeat just where I've been having niggling pains, so possible explanation there. Was told next appointment at 26 weeks . I actually quite like being seen for the reassurance value, so midwife said fine to come along at 21/22 weeks - very accommodating. Have turned down the new routine anti-d jabs, which I hope is the right decision.
Feeling chuffed generally, more so than after the scan really as I love the listening to the heartbeat malarkey - seems much more real.

franch · 24/03/2005 18:20

I'm still here Glad things are going well pooka

pooka · 24/03/2005 18:39

Good to hear it! Thought it was a ghost thread for a while

franch · 24/03/2005 19:23

Hope not! Hey, I just did a pg Pilates workout (on DVD). But it says you're supposed to do it 5 times a week!
