LOL at your mum laidbackinengland

dinkystinky · 06/11/2008 10:37

My mum and dad were calling the labour ward at 1am on the night I was induced to ask how it was going as they hadnt heard any news. Know they mean well but was just hugely irritated as just irritated the midwives and they took it out on me!

Nadsss - we had stokke sleepi for DS (he's still in it as cot bed at the moment but hopefully moving to big boy bed in December) and he loved it. The little size will contain your little one till at least 4 months (then had to increase to full cot size for DS as he was a tall boy and running out of space) and, as we were in a one floor flat at the time, loved being able to roll him from room to room. Only hassle about it is that you do need to get the fitted sheets (or make your own) once little one starts rolling about as normal flat sheets dont stay put...

Those of you in flats - check if you can leave buggies in entrance hall (easier if you have an umbrella fold as less intrusive than say a bugaboo) or go for slings/babybjorn type carriers (used mine tonnes with DS even though we were in a ground floor flat - easier to sling him on and go than get buggy out and put together to go out).

OP posts:
nadssss · 06/11/2008 10:41

Happy Birthday Dinky!

KT I am dreading the squeeze too! Slightly worried I will go crazy from the oppressiveness of a tiny space. We are keeping the buggy at the bottom of the stairs (so out of the flat) ? our anal neighbours will freak at this but nevermind. I think we might go with a Moses a basket too for a few months and carry it from bedroom to living room (about 7 ft away!). Will the baby wake up if we do this at say 11pm? I have no idea! Aghh

Anyone RH- and had their first Anti D?s? I am scared of needles so really nervous about mine next week ? anyone had them? Can?t believe I have that injection and a blood test on same day (am not at all comforted by the ? albeit true ? point that it?ll be nothing compared to childbirth!)

KT1983 · 06/11/2008 10:46

Nadssss - Its my first baby - so im just going to have to go with trial & error!
I just know that I will feel sorry for DP. As the space is so limited, there will be no where I can take the baby out of ear shot when she is crying. so his 5.30am starts are going to be horrendous after all the disturbed sleep.

I am very worried about being limited to such a small space. It drives me insaine at the moment, let alone with the baby.

Im hoping that im just dreading the worst, so when she comes I may be pleasantly suprised with how we cope.

We are going to have a baby carrier too - so my exercise will be up to a maximum when she is born...just to get me out of the flat [ grin] good way to shift the lb's I guess

LittleMissNorty · 06/11/2008 11:13

I had anti-D a few weeks ago after my bleed....and its honestly ok. I don't like jabs at all and its absolutely fine as they go - especially compared to clexane jabs!

Got my 28 week anti-D in a couple of weeks, and am fine about it this time

Questionkid · 06/11/2008 11:24

Oooh, I've managed to get a bit behind again but a few things to say:

I'm also breathless - I thought it was just because I'm super unfit so it's good to hear that other people are feeling the same.

I also think that my high BP could be due to work related stress - I'm working from home today and trying to take it easier. I've also been given deep breathing exercises by my yoga teacher which do seem to help and LO obviously likes the extra oxygen as he always has a good wriggle when I do them.

And as to wind, yep, I'm in the parp gang. I don't even get embarrassed anymore - better out than in I say.

rosieposey - I know it's easier said than done, but try not to stress about the wedding. Enjoy the build up, it'll be the best day of your life - mine was!

And happy birthday Dinky! Have a lovely day, sounds like you've had some lovely pressies. I just treated myself to some Uggs, I recommend the ones that look like a woolly jumper with buttons down the side, they're very versatile and I get lots of (good) comments on them.

Right, I'm off in search of elevenses...

nadssss · 06/11/2008 11:24

Okay cool ? thanks LMN ? I guess it is over in an hour! What a wimp I am.

KT ? I am worried about my DH and work too (although he is assuring me he needs very little sleep). I guess the thing to do is make the living room as comfy and welcoming as possible ? so you can go in there with the baby and have a bit of a rest on the sofa if you need to. I agree with you on trial and error ? just going to try to be as relaxed as possible.

dinkystinky · 06/11/2008 11:34

Thanks for all the birthday wishes ladies. Have just been to Tescos to get some Krispy Kreme donuts for my department (birthday tradition at our firm) - can I offer some virtual ones around to you ladies too (Rosie - you can have these virtual ones )...

And Markstretch - thanks for the lovely bubbly and nice virtual wrapped pressie, you shouldnt have...

KT1983 · 06/11/2008 11:38

Im sure we will cope People cope in much worse than a little one bed flat.

Question for everyone...
I had a telling off last night from the Midwife about not putting on much weight - 4lbs @ 26weeks. Its not that I was over weight to start with only 60kg @ 5'6.

But she has worried me now that the baby might not be growing properly?
Does weight gain REALLY matter?? My 22 week scan showed baby ok. My tummy measures slighlty smaller for my dates though

KT1983 · 06/11/2008 11:39

ooohhh...Donuts might help

spottyshoes · 06/11/2008 11:55

Happy Birthday Dinky! Pampering sounds lovely

I agree with the others - defo no overnight mother. You may also find that you dont actually need 'help' straight away as babies have very basic needs. It's 2-3 weeks afterwards when the washing is piling up and your floors are grimey that you could really do with -a- -servant- your mum

MS/Calico/dinky/interfering families! My SIL rang just as I was wheeled into recovery and apparantly 'demanded' to be put through wanting to know why we hadn't rung to announce the birth! He was about 30 mins old ffs My DH politely told the MW to tell her to fark owff and i'm sure she was more than happy to!

nadssss · 06/11/2008 11:58

yeah ? you are right, we will cope ? most important thing is a happy home rather than the size of home (although the idea of a nursery v. alluring)!
Think everyone is different with weight gain ? so long as you are eating properly and they measured your baby as normal at 22 weeks?Could it be that you are just eating more healthily since finding out you were preg? I am sure you will make up for it in 3rd trimester.

dinkystinky · 06/11/2008 11:58

KT - as long as you are eating healthily, not overdoing it (I know you're a fitness professional so you need to exercise, but as long as you're keeping up sufficient calorific intake to ensure you're eating more than you expend and getting plenty of r&r in) I really wouldnt worry too much about weight gain or not. Everyone's body reacts differently to pregnancy. Last time I gained 3 and a half stone and had a 9lb boy. This time its 1 stone (or just under) so far but am enormous in size compared to last pregnancy. My mate (who has had 3) was always tiny in pregnancy and gave birth to 7lbers who were fine - its just all bodies are different.

You know - and your body will know - if you're overdoing it. Though I agree, donuts will probably help with the weight gain if you're really that keen on it

mumoverseas · 06/11/2008 12:09

pampering sounds lovely dinky, enjoy. So jealous about the cinema, really miss that. Our nearest one is a 4 hour drive (Bahrain!) so don't go often.
Calico - glad I'm not alone but I still win, I'm 41 on boxing day. boo hoo! (born at 2am so my mum really had a bad xmas that year!)
krispy kreme, mmmmmmmmmmmmmm see we are back on the cakes again, its been a while! Just realised I'm 24 weeks today which is great, lovely to pass another milestone. After previous mc have had quite a few milestones and this is a biggy.
Right, off to make some banana muffins (weight watchers!) as nearest krispy kreme shop too far to encourage me off the sofa!

Questionkid · 06/11/2008 12:20

I've got a deal with my Mum that she'll come and stay once DH has gone back to work. She agrees that I'll need some help rather than be on my own and is happy to come and visit as soon as LO is born (without staying over) and then come back a couple of weeks later to hopefully sort out the grime in the house (!) and generally offer me help and support. My DH works 12 hour shifts, day and night so it seems like a good arrangement to me.

Oh the joys of working at home, I've just cleaned my kitchen (I needed to get up and walk around, my bum was going to sleep!) meaning I now don't have to do it in my weekend time! Woo hoo!

MarkStretch · 06/11/2008 12:24

Well I've been into the office and there's nothing they want me to do so.....I'm going to make leek and potato soup for lunch and prepare vegtable pakoras for tonights curry.

And then I will spend the evening farting.

Again.

herbgarden · 06/11/2008 12:52

Morning all and happy birthday dinky !!....

KT- second and third the comments re parents and staying over. My mum only lives up the road and would pop in during the day if I wanted a bit of company (and with sandwich for lunch) or wanted to just pop out for an hour or so without baby and all the baby bumf - she also used to deliver (!) dinner for the first 2 - 3 weeks complete with pudding . She'd put a load of washing on, clear up a bit or just do a few odd chores for me. The first few weeks with a new baby and no other kids you just need someone to pick up the bits and pieces you don't want to focus on and occasionally be able to have a shoulder to cry on but I think you also want to find your own way. I also had a rule that any visitors could come but I wasn't doing lunch for them - they could bring something with them (mean hard me) or come afternoon. I don't think I'd have liked anyone around all the time as I wanted to be on our own for a bit to find our own way (even though my mum is pretty good at butting out at the right time) and even my in laws would come and bring dinner and just sort stuff out... I hope you can let her down gently without offending but hopefully she'll understand- she's been there before hasn't she. This time with a toddler I'll really welcome the help but only so we have two pairs of hands to help with ds too - it's slightly different 2nd time round I reckon.

On the lack of space thing- I used one of those frames with a towelling chair thing (mothercare around £7.00) for the bath. You slip the towelling on the frame and the baby sort of rests on it - its not slippy so really helps and they are in a good position. You can then just whip the towelling thing off afterwards and dry on the radiator overnight. My s-in-l recommended and it was fab.

got ds back today and he's in a fairly good mood (hurray!)...we've been to toddler bounce at our local sports centre this morning which he loves (and half his part time nursery friends are there too which is great)......

herbgarden · 06/11/2008 13:10

PS Dinky ....have you booked an early cinema otherwise you might be zzzzing before you reach the end !

nadssss · 06/11/2008 13:14

Herb, would you mind attaching a link to the towelling chair thing? Can?t seem to find it when googling? sorry

catstar · 06/11/2008 13:24

Afternoon everyone!

I hardly get the chance to post these days and it's taking me forever to catch up with the thread! But happy birthday Dinky Stinky!

In general, hope everyone's well. Sorry to read about various pregnancy complications - makes me feel very lucky that (touch wood) all is going well for me at the moment. I am feeling a bit sorry for myself today though. I have a lingering cold/sinus infection and felt so rough I decided to call in sick at work, thinking I'd have a day under the covers and DD happy at nursery. But no, DD wakes up with her eyes stuck together for a good half hour and some suspect spots. A visit to the doctors confirmed she has conjunctivitis and chicken pox so there goes my day off!!! We are supposed to be going to Devon tomorrow with some friends, but one of them's pregnant and I don't know if she'll appreciate the chicken pox exposure.

That said, Little O (that's my DD) is a dream at the moment. She's just started walking properly and is soooo happy about it . She chatters all the time and some recgnisable words coming out - although only I can decipher "Iggle Piggle", the love of her life. I can hear her snuffling him in her cot now!

KT - I almost had the opposite problem with my Mum the first time round. She was so insistent that we needed our own space to get to know the baby, find our feet etc that she only came for a few hours one day! Said she couldn't get any time off work. It was okay though, but this time round I have asked if she can stay for a week after DH goes back to work after his Pat leave as I will have a 19 month old added to the equation .

Mmmmm - Krispy Kreme ....

Hope to catch you all soon and become a bit more of a regular - will have to slack off work a bit, methinks!

LittleMissNorty · 06/11/2008 13:31

Nad, have a look at this

I also used one and it was FAB and will definitely use it again. Used it for 6 months (just) with the baby bath and then moved to the big bath and a suction seat where she could sit upright but not get out. Now she walks around the bath touching everything in sight!

The best bit of advice I was given about bathing DD was they like it deep.....from the day she had her first bath - right up till now....she deeper the better.....I think its cos they stay warm.

dinkystinky · 06/11/2008 13:35

Oh Catstar - its horrible having a little one with chickenpox (DS got chicken pox just before last christmas when he was only around 18 months) - hope she gets over it soon. Sending you lots of sympathy! Found Nightgarden DVD on continual loop great for consoling tetching poxy DS.. Your dd sounds like she's at a really delightful stage.

I used a tummy tub for DS's baths (basically a bucket to wash him in) which he loved until he was able to sit up himself then started just plonking him in the bath. Was great in that more of his body was submerged in the water so less crying at bath time.

OP posts:
herbgarden · 06/11/2008 13:55

Little miss norty - that's the thing I was on about -thanks for that - can you see it Nadsss ? - I think you can also get them in John Lewis ( I know I've def seen them in there) - I always thought babies look so cute in that tummy tub bucket thing ! I'm getting another towelling thing this time (sil whipped mine). After a while, DS then liked lying on the non-slip bath mat in a puddle of water in the bath on his back splashing around at bathtime.

Chicken Pox ain't great - our nursery has an outbreak at the moment but luckily ds had it last winter. I used Piriton Antihistamine (liquid form) stops them itching at night and aids sleep (so then stops itching).....I found the incubation period at home very trying so second the DVD watching if she's keen.

dinkystinky · 06/11/2008 14:05

Herbgarden - is a 7pm showing so am keeping my fingers crossed will be conscious till the end!

OP posts:
KazzaL · 06/11/2008 14:07

Hello - sorry I am here, been lurking - too tired to write anything sensible, having horrendous nights with DS waking due to his cough which has come back with vengence now winter is here - just waiting to get bo**ocked at work as only making about half my case target - at least I'm in the office and have resisted being signed off with exhaustion by GP.

Happy Birthday Dinky - have a super day...

I also used a tummytub with DS after seeing it promoted on the baby&mum heatlth advice channel on TV (can't remember for the life of me what it's proper name is) - he loved it when tiny and once he outgrew it it was into the big corner bath filled up as full as possible - admittedly now by the end of bathtime most of the water is washing the bathroom carpet (previous owners not me).

Any ideas about recs for a new cloth nappy for DS - started a thread yesterday, but no-one has really offered any sensible suggestions my thread
