morning all, hope all ok today and we have an uneventful day. Sorry to hear about all your 'windy' stories, maybe those suffering should get or borrow a dog?
rosieposey, ref wedding, like others have said, get them to sort out their own accommodation, you have enough to do without having to do that. I was reading a thread yesterday where someone was invited to a wedding and on the invite it said that the guests had to pay £30 each for the reception and HAD to stay in the hotel where the reception was (very expensive one!)How bizarre is that? If people keep asking, give them two numbers, one for the local travel lodge and one for a really expensive one and let them choose! Hope all the plans go well and you don't get too stressed by it all.
THOM, don't worry didn't think you were having a dig, in fact, you made me realise how pathetic I was being over a bloody painting. I do hope your friend is ok and like you say, it puts it into perspective.
The good news is, finally got hold of neighbour who checked house and paintings (have a few) and confirmed the one in question still there and he double checked the paperwork with it. Bad news is, the art gallery have confirmed that the one being sold on ebay appears to be 'my' painting as there is a photo of the certificate of authenticity which definitely has the same painting number as mine! One is definitely a fraud and I'm hoping its not mine! Police now involved and have passed it to the 'arts and antiques squad'! What is suspicious about the one for sale is that it is for sale at around half what it is worth and looking at the sellers feedback there are negative comments saying that he has sold fake stuff before! So be warned, no one buy a painting off ebay!
A bit sad today as DD aged 12 flew back to the UK early hours to go back to boarding school. It is much quieter here now though (and tidier)!
Have a good one everyone

spottyshoes · 06/11/2008 08:12

PARP PARP!!!! Thought you lot had gone a bit off

So sorry to hear about your friend THOM. It's such a helpless feeling being family/friends as there isn't much more you can do other than just 'be there' with practical help and tea and sympathy.

Rosie congrats on the CS EDD, I loved knowing when DS was coming - so organised I sent a list of Hotels/B&B with prices and numbers out with my invites and told my mum and MIL to let it be known I didn't want to hear about other peoples organisational issues as i'd have plenty of my own!!!

QK - Whenever mine has hit 90 in the past it has ALWAYS been work related stress. Starting ML early sounds very sensible - You'll be thankful for your time off child-free when you facing the prospect of future ML's with children under your feet

Glad you had such a nice time with DH Herby - must try and do that with mine soon as we are in the 5 min grunt stage at the mo!

MOS - Hope you get to the bottom of it soon - at the thought you might have been burgled though!!

Rant away MrsArchie - I'm with you completely on the SPD and Heartburn ones! Hope things improve for you. My cousin's a 24 and she got bottom half things from ebay but found the 22 in Dotty P quite roomy on the top half so used them.

TBM - Glad you are both still here and where you should be! I know what you mean about the innocence of pregnancy, I am envious of my friends who attend appts, Scans especially, with nothing but excitement. Ignorance is bliss

spottyshoes · 06/11/2008 08:17

I spent a whole hour last night standing at the window with DS going "WOOOOOOOOW!" and "MORE BANG" at all the fireworks - it was so cute. He loved it and i'm so glad that he isn't scared. Am going to the shops today to pick up a few half prices boxes and have a little do for him tonight with bonfire food. Hope everyone else had a good night?

mumoverseas · 06/11/2008 08:21

yay, someone else is up! Morning spotty. What is it now, 10 more working days?
I'd forgotten it was bonfire night last night, you tend to forget stuff like that here. I'm counting the days too til I get home and its 10 days! woo hoo!

LittleMissNorty · 06/11/2008 08:25

I've got another 8 weeks till I finish work .

Are you home for Xmas MOS?

I really must get on with my Xmas shopping......

mumoverseas · 06/11/2008 08:37

yes LMN, home for a PROPER XMAS! woo hoo. Have been dreaming of my M & S turkey and the little sausages with bacon, which are forbidden here! (bacon & sausage, not the turkey!)Come to think of it, might just give the turkey a miss and just have the sausages and bacon! Can't wait to get back and do my xmas shopping, done a bit here but its just not the same. enjoy your shopping!

KT1983 · 06/11/2008 08:58

Morning Everyone, How are you all today?

7 weeks until Christmas today!! - Very excited

Ok - So I live in a small one bed flat, which is just big enough for my partner & I and the baby...Not sure where all her pram/moses basket/stocks of nappies & clothes etc will go
So heres the problem...
My mum lives in the Lake District and has said that as soon as I have had the baby or go into Labour she will get the first train down or drive down to visit....

Problem is...She wants to stay at our flat, sleeping on the sofa ( in my very small lounge ) I appreciate the gesture of her wanting to come and help us out, but Im thinking that 3 adults and a new baby in my small flat will do my head in days after giving birth!!

Ive tried the guest house/hotel approach in a round about way, but she is having none of it.

Would you just grin & bear it? Or should the first few days with your baby be just for you & your partner to figure things out together?

dinkystinky · 06/11/2008 09:30

Morning all - is my birthday today, and had the delight of being woken up at 5.50 by DS wailing away in his bedroom (he'd escaped from his cotbed and was sat in the middle of the floor in his grobag, totally inconsolable) - bless him.... so have updated the list below with my new age and Munteria's correct age (sorry Munteria).

KT - depends on your relationship with your mum, and what your little one ends up being like. Love my mum but she drives me crazy so restricted both sets of inlaws to day time visits only (and only then for a couple of hours - both live 2 hours at least away from us). My DS would NOT sleep at nights the first few nights so actually had to send DH out of the room to get some sleep, so he may well need the sofa to sleep on himself - and you do NOT need to be stressing about keeping your mum awake too. Also, I loved the first weeks as a family being just me, DH and baby - you never get that time again, so maybe ask your mum to delay coming down for a couple of days until things settle down (if that's what you want)? At the end of the day, its your baby, your experience hon. Perhaps explain that to your mum and that it would make you feel more relaxed, and happier, if she was there but stayed in a B&B at night so there is someone in the flat who is well rested and able to look after you DH and baby.

Happy Birthday Dinky ...hope you have a lovely day and are spoilt rotten....

My birthday soon....but I'm going to be 40 ....trying to forget about it

Calico1 · 06/11/2008 09:39

KT - I agree with Dinky on the this one...it is so overwhelming that it is great to have extra help but having to 'manage' your mum as well can have it's own problems. I managed to put off my parents stepping in until a few weeks after the birth and by that time I really needed a break!

I'm also suffering from breathlessness but for me it is down to low blood pressure - which is also making me feel faint.

I am blaming the farting on the cat - I seem to have got away with it so far......

KT1983 · 06/11/2008 09:45

Thanks for the advice. I think I might try getting her to leave it for a few days before she lands on me.

Shame I cant guarentee day of baby arriving - would be able to book her into a BnB no problem!

Happy Birthday Dinky - have a great day - make sure your pampered!

MarkStretch · 06/11/2008 09:45

Morning all

KT I think your mum really needs to respect your space. Those first few days after having a baby can be really tough and it's so nice to have your own space. You won't believe how nice it is to sleep in your own bed, have a bath etc, and for you and DP to get to know your LO.

It's lovely that your mum wants to come down and help but I would say you and DP need to call the shots!

Would your DP have a word with her maybe? I would say staying nearby and coming round everyday would probably be more appropriate.

It's really hard to be firm with your lovely mum in these circumstances. I have told mine I WILL NOT tell her when/if I go into labour as she will panic and panic. Last time she got my auntie to ring the hospital and they put her though to me in recovery after my CS! Enough mother!

dinkystinky · 06/11/2008 09:50

Thanks all - got an Elemis Mother to be Ritual voucher from my husband and DS for my birthday present, so looking forwards to booking in for 2.5 hours of indulgence and pampering at some point pre x-mas - and some stretch mark cream from my mum (bless her little cotton socks)and money (for new uggs - obligatory north london mummy footwear) from my dad.

DH is taking me out to see Quantum of Solace tonight - think is the first time in over 2 years we will have gone to the cinema. How sad is that???

OP posts:
Calico1 · 06/11/2008 09:51

Markstretch - you just reminded me that my mum called the hospital just as I was in the middle of delivery (baby's head out).......the midwife actually asked me if I wanted to speak to her. I declined!

Calico1 · 06/11/2008 09:53

Oh - happy birthday Dinky - enjoy the cinema!

Calico1 · 06/11/2008 09:53

Oh - happy birthday Dinky - enjoy the cinema!

mumoverseas · 06/11/2008 09:53

KT - agree with other comments, you will really need your space with your new one and won't want anyone staying now matter how much help you/they think they'll be. I love my mum to bits but the thought of her staying would drive me insane!

Dinky - happy birthday! You are still sooooo young, not fair! Feel so old today. Think on my birthday next month I'll start counting back and be 39 again instead of 41! Old enough to be a grandmother. Am I the oldest on here? (seeking a prize!)

Calico1 · 06/11/2008 09:54

No idea why that came up twice.....double birthday wishes!

MarkStretch · 06/11/2008 09:55

Ha Calico!

I remember lying in recovery and the nurse saying to me 'Your auntie's on the phone, would you like to speak to her?'

And thinking 'WHAT? Oh no I couldn't possibly get up and go to the phone now'.... Never thought they might bring the phone to me...

HAPPY BIRTHDAY DINKY!

KT1983 · 06/11/2008 09:56

Haha - LOL at MS and Calico's mums.

I can honestly imagine my mum being exactly the same - Its the first grandchild, so to say she is excited is an understatement!

Well, ive got 3 more months to gently ease her into the idea of a delayed arrival.

Calico1 · 06/11/2008 09:58

Don't panic MOS.....I'm 40 too - but not 41 till next may
so maybe you do get the prize?

nadssss · 06/11/2008 10:04

Hi KT ? we are going to be living in a one bedroom place too (can?t get it sold in this market) on the top floor of a walk up. Eek. Am quite nervous about the whole thing but planning to get one of these cots that grow with the baby ? Stokke Sleepi ? which I think will work best. How are you planning to do the beginning bit? Baby sleeping with in a cot in your room? What about after 6 months?

We are getting rid of everything superfluous now to make space for nappies and essentials etc and only buying what we definitely need (no baby baths etc, keeping clothes to minimum ? it?s hard though as I want to buy everything in sight!)

I really think having your mum in the flat (if it is as small as ours) on the sofa will do your head in! I think it won?t give you space to establish yourselves as a family of three and would just add to the stress. I think I would insist on the B&B as tactfully as you can ? then you can have a bit of family space for you in the evenings and then she can come and help you in the day.

laidbackinengland · 06/11/2008 10:13

Happy Birthday Dinky !!

KT - It sounds like your issues with your mum is a space one rather than enaything else. Maybe you could just say to her that you'd love her to be around as much as possible after the baby is born, but at night time maybe she could go to a B and B and 'get some time to herself' . B and B's shouldn't be too full in late Jan/Feb ?

Talking about Mum's/Auntys coming in at inopportune moments, when I had DS3at home I was doing a natural 3rd stage, delivering the placenta standing up ...TMI.... but umbilical cord dangling from me looking like I was a sheep giving birth ...and my mum waltzes in with a cup of tea. We are close, but not that close.

This time, my mum arrives on 16th January for a month - but we get on well and my house is luckily large enough for us to avoid each other if we are getting on each others tits ! DH is having a month off work too, but it's nice to have my mum around to help with walking the other kids to school/ cooking/ stuff around the house.

THOM , sorry to hear about your friends diagnosis, how distressing for her and you. Does she have a supportive partner/family ?

MOS... nightmare with the painting... hope the antiques squad work it out for you.

Hi Nadssss,
We have decided to get a moses basket for the first few months, as we will hopefully be moving into a bigger place 2 or 3months after she is born. So we will buy a cotbed then ( or hoping DP's sister will donate her old one! )
We are just going to keep the moses basket in our room, but will be handy that we can move it about ...well to the lounge & back!

We have also been having mass clearouts - We have a small storage room, that is currently full of DVD's and folders/paperwork etc. Trying to stack all that in a load of storage boxes.

We have so far found 3 spare shelves that we are trying to stock up on nappies & babies stuff, but already rapidly running out of room.

God knows where the pram will fit in - Im dreading the squeeze!

Im a tidy freak too - so its going to be challenging for me.
