Lexie, thank you for answering my question. It sounds so simple I wonder why it can't be done as standard at the 12 week scan? It has never been mentioned where I live so I take it it's not offered here as standard. I was only offered a scan at 20 weeks but pushed for an early one due to previous mcs. Is there any way they can check for signs of ds at a normal scan?

Lexie100 · 05/04/2005 14:49

I don't think there is as they have to take very precise measurements. The others will know but i think it costs about £100. I'm one of the lucky ones and get it on the NHS. My next scan, and only if i hadn't have had it, is at 23 weeks.

We have down syndrome on both sides and although not genetic can carry risk apparently so they told me to go. Otherwise i don't think i would have bothered as i knew nothing about it. So pleased i did go, was just amazing.

Hi, I haven't been on for a while. Been ill with just about every infection you can get in your ear, throat and chest...still am on the up at last, and can get back to concentrating on being pg again!
Good to see everyone is doing well. I haven't had my scan date through yet-mind you I am still only 10+3. When do they usually send them out?
The health authorities here have only just introduced the 12-week scan, I was pg with ds last year, and they only offered a 20-week scan, and the option of paying for a nuchal scan.

On a weird note, I have had a dotty rash appear on my cheeks. Is this normal? I didn't have anything like it last time

I'll be 13 -1 weeks at my booking in but this weekend my midwife friend (who was there throughout labour and forceps delivery with DS1 and delivered DS2 when she was a student)told me that she can do all my ante natal care - at home and at mutually convenient times! Very pleased about that so may get her to book me in instead

Piggiesmum · 05/04/2005 19:44

It sounds like a bit of a lottery as far as scans and stuff go. I have my booking in appt on Thursday at 11wks but no sign of a scan yet. I'll pump the midwife for info but I won't be happy if I have to wait till 20 wks!!

Glad to hear the bleedings stopped morningpaper.

SusiS · 05/04/2005 21:15

gp called me earlier to tell me that the blood results they took 2 weeks ago were not ok!!!!!!! asked lots about mediterranean blood in both our families and mentioned something like amnemia; but can't be certain!!! will give blood again tomorrow and even dp has to give blood!! how odd is that????? - very worried

Moomin · 05/04/2005 21:23

SusiS - how frustrating not knowing what they actually meant. Hardly very helpful in reducing your stress is it? Sorry not to have any info about this type of thing. I know it sounds stupid but try not to get too wound up. At least you'll have more bloods taken tomorrow and you'll be able to hopefully get some answers about what it is they're looking for/have found.

Morningpaper - glad things are better today.

I got my notification of the scan for Thursday a few days after my booking-in appt with the midwife, so I guess about 3 weeks ago. I think if I hadn't been offered one thus far and it was policy not to give them until 20 wks in my area, I'd have had a private one. It seems absolutely ridiculous to make people wait this long.

Moomin · 05/04/2005 21:25

btw, the scans done before 12 weeks seem to be about £100 privately. The nuchal costs between £130-£150 depending on where you go.

morningpaper · 06/04/2005 08:36

Susi: !!! Can't believe they didn't explain it all to you - that's really crap. What did they test for? Only thing I can think of is that you might have come up positive for an STD?

I'm feeling ok today (no spotting) - just my usual nauseous self.

Who else has a scan on Friday? There's a few of us isn't there?

bonniej · 06/04/2005 09:13

Susi, that's really bad that things aren't explained properly. I don't think they appreciate how much people worry. After you've given blood again how long will they make you wait for the results? There are so many little things that can be picked up, I'm sure there is no need to worry, but will be thinking of you xx I've got scan on Friday but dentist tomorrow (wish it was the other way round) We'll have to log on Friday evening to update on scan news. Our dates might change completely, or there could be some more twin news

tew · 06/04/2005 10:23

Hi Moomin, thx for showing me the new thread. Hi all, due with baby no 2 27th Oct, dg is only 7 months old, so life will be chaotic! Took a little time to get used to the idea, but very happy.

Moomin · 06/04/2005 10:53

Hi again tew. You're due the day after me! You'll certainly have your hands full won't you, but it's all good fun! Congrats by the way...

We've been discussing scans and stuff recently as many of us a re due for our 12 weeker over the next few days. have you had any scans yet/are you due for any?

tew · 06/04/2005 11:31

Hi Moomin is it your first baby?. have my first scan on the 18th April, but had to have an early scan at 5 1/2 weeks as had tiny spotting - all fine. Funny how second time round it's different, still very exciting, but don't have time really to count off the days until the first scan!

Off to Cyprus tomorrow for a much needed ten day holiday, hope dg and dh are both well behaved!

morningpaper · 06/04/2005 11:46

I know what you mean about second time around - I had to count the weeks off on my diary yesterday as I had no idea how many weeks I was! First time I could have told you in hours ...

tew · 06/04/2005 11:54

I agree MorningPaper, have to remind my dh to pay some attention to new bump, as don't want it thinking it's unloved!

footstep · 06/04/2005 12:14

Susi

My guess is that your blood test showed that you may be a carrier of thalassemia. There's a leaflet on this here

Try not to worry too much - in order for your baby to be affected, both you and your dp would have to be carriers. That's why they want to test your dp's blood.

It's very bad that your gp did not explain exactly what's going on.

Good luck!

footstep x

fastasleep · 06/04/2005 12:30

Susi sorry to hear about your bloodtest thing, really nice of them to scare you!! Hi Tew we have our scan on the same day, I know what you mean about forgetting about it I took my clothes off last night and thought 'Aaah I'm getting fat - oh, yeah' lol.... is anyone else feeling reeeeeeaally really amazingly tired? I can't seem to sleep at night anymore and I can barely keep my eyes open (literally) today... I'm trying to psych myself up into sitting in the garden with my DS - yeah sitting in the garden!

bonniej · 06/04/2005 12:55

We were talking about names a while ago and me and dh can't agree (I know it's early but hey). We thought we had sorted out names but keep changing our minds. I've thought of a girls name that I really like but wanted to run it past someone else before I do dh. I don't want to ask family or friends cos they'll prob say they like it when they don't but thought you lot would give me an honest opinion. What do you think of Skye? Honest opionions please!!

fastasleep · 06/04/2005 12:56

I love the name Skye ...dh doesn't though, it was on my list last time..

bonniej · 06/04/2005 13:01

thanks fastasleep, i bet my dh won't like it either. he seems to go for really traditional names, oh well, worth a try, you never know

WifeOfTheKipper · 06/04/2005 13:03

I keep trawling through the babycentre dictionary, can't find a single name I like! Grr!

Oops it's me fastasleep - don't ask about the name change, hmm I might leave it like this lol

triceratops · 06/04/2005 13:46

Hope you are all feeling better today. I am still getting tired and migranes for some reason which I don't normally suffer from. Is anyone still suffering from morning sickness after 12 weeks?

Everyone seems to be going on holiday. I am sooo

fastasleep · 06/04/2005 13:50

I'm bang on 12 weeks and the morning sickness hasn't really changed at all yet, still retch lots....I seem to like vomiting bile (yuck!) so whenever my tummy's empty I vomit lots of yellow yucky stuff until I fill it up...but then again filling it up makes me vomit too sometimes lol...ugh! I am of the holidaying people too!

jolovett · 06/04/2005 14:40

I am 13+4 weeks today and I'm starting to feel more normal again this week. Although the last two nights I haven't been sleeping very well! Hope everyone else gets to this stage soon. To those of you worried about the bleeding - I had spotting at the time my period was due for the first two months. Was told there was nothing to worry about that it was common, but still had an early scan at that point. Since then I've had nothing so hopefully it's just the same for you guys.
I think we're going to book a 3d scan this week - at the mums clinic in Birmingham. Has anyone heard anything about this place? What are the chances of seeing the gender of the baby in these does anyone know? I would like to know what it is, but dh doesn't!

cori · 06/04/2005 15:20

First day back at work after a two week break.
Am feeling really sleepy, but cant get off until 4.45 today. grrr.
