Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
Moomin · 04/04/2005 10:18

i heard that the first trimester ends officially at 14 weeks as this is when the placenta starts working independently. i know everyone says 12 wks is when you start feeling better but ime and lots of my friends, it is more like 14 wks.

has anyone seen that there's a film on ch4 on thursday night which tracks a baby's development from conception to birth using the latest technology? aparently it's amazing and well worth looking at, esp for us preggers people. we'll have to tape this or footballers' wives though!

Jockey · 04/04/2005 10:27

Yes Moomin, saw an ad for that programme last night - I just hope I can stay awake long enough for it - I'm missing all the good telly at the moment. It looks fascinating! I will have to try and tape this AND footballers wives. Not quite sure how I'm going to manage it yet....

Roll on 14 weeks then, hopefully we will all feel a little less shattered. Tossing and turning at night time, can't get back to sleep from 3am after a visit to the loo!! (the usual problem). It will all be worth it in the end

mishmash2 · 04/04/2005 10:55

I can't wait for that programme. Saw it advertised last week and that is just up my street! I am trying to persuade my DH to let me have a 3D scan but he thinks it's just a waste of money..... not fair! But I suppose it is one of life's mysteries and will have to wait to see what the bump looks like and the sex when it pops out! I still have Footballer's wives videod from last week - what with that,ER, 24, Desperate Housewives etc etc I don't know how I fit in work!!

jolovett · 04/04/2005 14:13

That programme looks good - looking forward to watching it. I really want a 3d scan done, but having trouble convincing dh that it's worth the money - we're building a house at the moment so every spare penny is spent on that. Perhaps if he sees the programme it might change his mind.

I'm researching where and what costs the 3d scans are at the moment to see what is best. The best one I've found is in Birmingham for £195 - does anyone else know of any good places and how much they cost?

cori · 04/04/2005 18:55

I had my scan today. Everything is fine. I am 14 weeks as I thought. Saw its little heart fluttering away, I think it has made it more real for DH too.
I think I will definetly go for the 3D scan, costs a lot, but I know I will regret it if dont.
Will probably wait till after the 20week hospital scan.

morningpaper · 04/04/2005 19:59

Had some spotting/bleeding today - rang midwife but scan is booked for Friday so will wait until then. I'm sure I can still feel the baby wriggling just after I eat, so I don't know what to think. Not TOO worried at the moment but a bir anxious.

Elf: How are you getting on? Hope you are okay.

Elf1981 · 04/04/2005 21:52

Moomin, I'm so excited about watching that program! Me and DH had been really excited at the idea of a 3D scan, but as he's adamant we wont find out the sex of the baby, (and I somehow agreed) we're holding off on that idea, as in most cases you can tell the sex of the baby in those scans.

Morningpaper I've not had any bleeding since Thursday, touch wood. I read somewhere that sometimes bleeding / spotting (mine was more spotting really, just slightly bloody discharge, sorry if TMI) can be explained by hormonal changes in the body when a period would usually be due. I'm not sure how common of thought this is, it was written in my Boots "pregnancy and birth" free book I got, but it worked out right for me, as that was when I would have been due. Still, it isn't very reassuring when its happening to you.
Fingers crossed for you & your scan. I've got to wait until next Thursday for mine !

mishmash2 · 05/04/2005 10:02

Morningpaper - try not to worry and fingers crossed for you for your scan. If it is any consolation I haven't really stopped bleeding/spotting since 14th Feb. Well - I suppose I have had a week off in total since then. Am now used to it as have had 3 scans and the little monkey's heart is fluttering away and have come to the decision that I must be one of those weirdos. However, still would prefer not to!

Has anyone bought maternity clothes yet? I did an order yesterday online...... I just feel so fat and am dreading the weather getting sunnier as all my t-shirts seem to be quite short and that is not a good look with jeans that can't be done up!!!

Lexie100 · 05/04/2005 10:49

Morning all. Had my Nuchal scan yesterday. Wow isn't it amazing i just can't believe the detail.

I had a lot of bleeding over the past few weeks and all was fine on the pic. Very low chance of DS and other genetic disorders. So bleeding not always case to worry. but good luck anyway.

As for low blood pressure me too.
As for charmed ohh such a big fan.

Now time to tell the world i'm having a little baby .

fastasleep · 05/04/2005 11:03

Argh you lucky people! I don't get my scan till the 18th! Fed up with waiting now lol... I'm sure I keep feeling him/her wriggle and I'm only 12 weeks this week... I was talking to my DH about how I felt it wriggle and it did it again I was sat there going 'but it did.....OOOOOHHH it did it again!!!' lol... Elf so glad to hear that you're ok, Morningpaper I bet everythings fine MishMash I have vouchers for maternity clothes I just can't get my butt to the shops! I'm well fat heehee

Lexie100 · 05/04/2005 11:11

Ohh fat.. my MIL told me to start wearing baggy clothes so it didn't look so obvious AGGGHHHH the woman drives me crazy. i'm actually really proud to be pregnant even if i do just look fat.

Anyhow, question: what is the deal with oils? Massage oil, bath oil etc what can and can't you use???

fastasleep · 05/04/2005 11:19

You know last time I knew all of them and this time I've forgotten! Can't seem to find a website for it lol

fastasleep · 05/04/2005 11:20

useful if you like your strange pagan herbs lol

Moomin · 05/04/2005 11:29

morningpaper - how's it going? ok I hope - have been thinking about you.
Elf1981 glad you seem better.
How exciting having all these scans! Mine's on Thurs then nuchal next Friday. Lexie - was the nuchal detailed enough to find out the sex? Did you ask/would they have told you? I'm soooo nosey I'm desperate to know what ours is!
Feel tonnes better compared to what I was like a few weeks ago. Still retching spontaneously but it's kind of like a party trick now; I'll impress my classes when I go back to school after Easter!
Have bought a pair of maternity trews from H&M, just black and a bit bootleggy with a roll-under waist band which I'll use for work. I've lost weight off my legs and bum but stomach still massive so it's elasticated waistbands-a-go-go from now on.

Tommy · 05/04/2005 11:37

Fastasleep - I don't get my booking in appt til next Thursday!!! I'm still very of all of you but glad everything seems to be going well. We have realsied that my parents are going away the week before I am due and my sister and best friends (inc midwife!) are all going away together the day I am due!!! Who will look after me?!

fastasleep · 05/04/2005 11:39

So no scan? That's so annoying! I'd be going a bit mad!

fastasleep · 05/04/2005 11:40

Don't worry Tommy the fewer people around the better...honest as long as you have a man to cling on to and break his hand....doesn't matter who he is lol you just need one to blame everything on

Tommy · 05/04/2005 11:43

we don't get scans til 20 weeks here

fastasleep · 05/04/2005 11:46

That's pretty dire, they obviously just want to save money

cori · 05/04/2005 11:56

My booking in appointment is next Friday, I will 15 + 5 weeks by then.
how many weeks are you Tommy?

bonniej · 05/04/2005 12:28

hi everyone, morningpaper, i'm sure you'll be fine but good luck for Friday. I've got my first scan on Friday as well and am anxious. I still haven't had my booking appointment though. The scan appointment letter says to bring your notes with you, but I don't have any! I think there's a few of us with scans on Friday. Mine's not until the afternoon so I bet the morning will drag. I went out yesterday and bought lots of elasticated waisted clothes. Luckily those gypsy type skirts are in and they're really comfy so bought a couple of those. It's hard when you're at the in between stage (too small for maternity but too fat for normal clothes). I'm starting to get uncomfortable in my jeans and trousers now. Have just booked a weeks break in Devon for early June so am looking forward to getting away. Hopefully will look a bit more pregnant by then and not just like I need a diet Elf, glad to hear things are better with you now.

Lexie100 · 05/04/2005 13:56

As i said i had my Nuchal scan (12+3) and i still haven't had a booking in appointment, that's not till 16 weeks! They didn't seem to ask for notes.

Apparently they used to tell you the sex at this stage but it's so unreliable that they don't any more. I think you can find out at the later scan but that depends on your hospital as some won't tell you.

Thanks for the link will have a look now.

bonniej · 05/04/2005 13:57

this is going to sound so very thick of me I know, but what's a nuchal scan? and how does it differ from a normal scan?

morningpaper · 05/04/2005 13:58

Hi, I am feelng okay today - no more spotting and I keep feeling movement so I'm not too worried.

Just had a BIG lunch in Wetherspoons - now I DEFINITELY look pregnant!

Lexie100 · 05/04/2005 14:08

A nuchal scan is offered to NHS patients in 7% of the country the rest have to pay. It's a scan that can identify the likelyhood of Down Syndrome and other genetic disorders. It's non invasive and measures a gap at the back of the neck and looks to see whether or not your baby has a nose bone. I'm not sure about the neck gap measurements but from this and if your baby has a nose bone your risk of down syndrome is reduced. If your risk is high they can then do more specific tests (amnio) which is invasive and carries a risk of MC.
