Hi, I hope I'm not the only one who can't keep up! Apols in advance!
Frazzledoldbag do look at doula.org.uk for general doula info but not all UK doulas are on there. It might also be worthwhile contacting your local NCT groups and/or HomeBirth Support group and asking if they are aware of anyone - quite often doulas advertise through them.
I live in surrey so I don't know anyone locally to you - you don't say where you are in East Scotland but the Edinburgh NCT groups should know more (if that helps) www.nct.org.uk and search by postcode. Try EH7 for central Edinburgh & see what comes up.
We had a doula for DD2's birth and she was utterly & completely wonderful. We gave DD2 her first name as a middle name in her honour to say thank you. She helped us both throughout the birth and in the preparation for it. I can only wholeheartedly recommend a doula's involvement. DH really enjoyed the birth as she was another specialist partner in the proceedings. Really important to meet, discuss things and know you're going to get on together though. I did speak to three before we choose her.
There are also separate post-birth doulas who offer support & come to that, there are NCT, La Leche League & Breast-feeding support network BF counsellors if you wanted specific help.
This time, she has very limited availability at the time this baby in due so I am investigating an independant midwife option to see whether that is a route we might want to take this time. I (& DH) know her personally so it would be someone close to me. More expensive though, c£3,500 versus c.£500 for the doula - I'm not sure we can afford it but the NHS options here are dire. Again, really important to do your research to ask the questions which are critical to you. I want a homebirth again (I hate hospitals & labour wards most of all after DD1's birth) so they have to be happy to support me at home etc etc.
Ask away if you have any q's & good luck.
