PinkTulips · 15/09/2008 21:09

i did hospital ante-natal classes with dp first time round and went on my own to a refresher cleass with ds.

tbh, with dd i draggged dp as he was refusing to read any books and i wanted to force him to know at least a few bit of info then with ds i went to the refresher class in the hope of meeting other women (being the pierced tattoed 22 year old wasn't exaclty conducive to that though sadly)

i personally found it a waste of time both times. i found out nothing that i couldn't have asked at an appointment or read in a book.

i'm sure if i'd paid for professional classes i might have had a differant impression but tbh... if you have MN then the only point to classes is the social aspect

swampster · 15/09/2008 21:15

Agree, PinkTulips, in retrospect the main benefit of NCT classes appears to be the social aspect - and letting my DH know I wasn't making everything up. And if you don't get on with anyone, that's a LOT of money for nothing.

You wouldn't be in the least bit , chilledmama, if you could see my payslip!

I am scoffing a HUGE bag of m&ms right now...

MarkStretch · 15/09/2008 21:16

My DH has put the heating on!

At this rate we won't be able to AFFORD a baby!

He said he 'just wanted to check the radiators were working'....

dinkymum · 15/09/2008 21:18

Evening all! you know how all the books etc etc say 'you're feeing better now make the most of it etc etc blah blah blah' well why do i feel more hormonal and tired than ever!!!? Help!!

chilledmama · 15/09/2008 21:18

i did NCT with DS...mainly as it was reassuring to know I already knew...iykwim and to meet (hopefully) other liked minded parents-to-be who were due around same time...
Our local NHS classes are stuffed full of 16 year olds who don't get that drinking 10 alcopops on Sat night and smoking 20 fags might be harmful but then I do have the joy of living in Portsmouth!!!!

PinkTulips · 15/09/2008 21:39

thankfully my old hospital ran seperate classes for the teen moms who fit that description chilled so i at least managed to avoid that

swampster · 15/09/2008 21:41

The new you is just around the corner, dinkymum.

onwardandupward · 15/09/2008 21:42

Hehehehe Swampy!

Yeah, I'm aspiring to be an ommmmmmmmmmer

We have dal for supper. lentil alert lentil alert lentil alert which I made this morning because I am superwoman.

(it's the first time I've cooked in days, ssssshhhhhh. I'm the one who gets home and puts their feet up and says "ahh, what's for supper, dear?")

chilledmama · 15/09/2008 21:46

I eat from microwave all week then when DH gets home for weekend on Friday he cooks, does bath time, pretty much everything...because his secret identity is SuperDad!!!

MarkStretch · 15/09/2008 21:49

I have got a craving for tinned spaghetti on cheap white toasted bread. I am salivating.

thehouseofmirth · 15/09/2008 21:56

With DS I couldn't get on NCT classes (I think here you need to book them about 2 years pre-conception) but our NHS ones were fab. I don't think I learnt much I couldn't have read in a book but what was great was they had sorted it in such a way that all of us were first time mums aged 30-35 and we all lived within easy walking distance of each other. Three years on most of us still get together regularly and in the early days it was a massive lifeline.

Our local NCT does do a refresher course but as I'm having a c-section there doesn't seem much point.

chilledmama · 15/09/2008 22:01

will miss out on refresher course this time as our weekends are too precious for time together doing family and domestic stuff...down side is chance of meeting some more people due around same time but really only made one proper friend last time so what's the chances anyway
I tended to just crack on and do what I wanted/needed regardless.
Other option for meeting people is bumps'n'babies and lalecheleague coffee mornings.

chilledmama · 15/09/2008 22:09

night night all...i should have gone to bed an hour ago but nnnooooo i will stay up watching shit tv and go to bed late and feel tired and crap the next day

thehouseofmirth · 15/09/2008 22:11

Yes that's true chilledmama. I never joined the NCT but started going to one of their playgroup when DS was a bout 8 weeksold and made some good friends there. Also when I was the only mum I knew still breast feeding a toddler I stared going to La Leche League meetings (better late than never!) and found a whole group of mums who were much more on my wavelength in terms of parenting-style than many of the other mums I had met elsewhere.

LittleMissNorty · 16/09/2008 08:28

Blimey you lot are chatty ....have a busy weekend and it takes me AGES to catch up.

Had ANC at the hospital yesterday and they agreed to an elective CS at 39 weeks.....and also booked me in for my Anti-D injections and GTT in November. We also get anti-D at 28 and 34 weeks, in the event of trauma and at delivery.

I really must work out my mat leave and tell my employers soon as I get my MatB1 form soon. I'm hoping not to go back after Xmas but don't think I can swing it and may do just a couple of weeks into the New Year

Anomoly scan on Friday.....can't wait

herbgarden · 16/09/2008 08:37

chilled, I've heard our nhs classes are similar with the teen mums. We have quite a lot round here too - you only have to go into town during the day to see how many kids they all have...

I also remember (random thought - sorry) when I had my consultant appointment last time round and I was last in for one of my appointments having waited around with the local pregnant teenagers (couldn't see anyone even relatively near my age) for absolutely ages and I said to the consultant - "god I feel old sitting out there" - and she said, "ladies like you [implying that I might be a wee bit on the old side !!] are the least trouble, you should see the things I have to deal with - one of the worst being diabetes in young overweight late teens early 20's "......" I would have thought that the young 'uns would have had the least health probs and just popped em out but clearly I was wrong. I realise there are probably a lot of other things which go on in their lives which are problematic but from a health perspective I was quite shocked really (naive me maybe!).

Random thoughts over. I've told my work I'm leaving on christmas eve. I'm then taking a months holiday (work part time so equates to about 10 days) and suspect if all goes ok (c-section this time again) then baby will be here by late Jan/early Feb (Due date 11 Feb)- looking forward to a bit of time off 2 days a week when ds goes to nursery until baby arrives tbh. I got really tired last time towards the end with high BP and very very fat ankles.....

PinkTulips · 16/09/2008 11:18

morning you lot.

am off to my antenatal chack at the hospital this afternoons... who knows, i might even see an obstetrition this time

more likly the scarey midwife who gave out to me last time for not having breakfast (apparently i'd faint and crack my skull you know) will find something else to scold me about.

last day of the first half for me 20 weeks tomorrow!

hope everyone else is feeling good today.

PinkTulips · 16/09/2008 11:21

sorry, spelling was more appalling than usual there

forgot to say, i had both my older 2 sitting in the bed with me this mornig prodding the bump and talking to baby and giving baby hugs and kisses. ds announced 'i love the little baby' when he got a kick lovely start to the day

herbgarden · 16/09/2008 12:14

PT - a midwife once told my friend that she would have to be housebound from just before her due date unless she felt like "giving birth in the supermarket car park"....She didn't have a really quick birth first time round so I really don't know where that came from ??!! Such scaremongering eh?? Why do they feel the need to treat us like children some of these mw's?

mrsy · 16/09/2008 12:46

Hello all,

My delightful husband got home last night and started looking at the NCT stuff, all was going so well until he saw the price... I know I can at least blame the hormones, but being called a 'silly mare' would get me going at the best of times!!!

How he didn't get his steak served raw and on his head I don't know !

Second day at work going well, but - horror of horrors - facebook is banned! Argh!

swampster · 16/09/2008 13:06

My mobile's not up to much but I can get a quick FB fix on it when I'm pretending to be part of RL.

onwardandupward · 16/09/2008 13:49

There are two cartoons I remember really well from my childhood.

One was a picture of an empty kitchen and a note on the table reading "Gone beserk. Dinner on the ceiling"

And the other was a picture of an empty kitchen and a note on the table reading "You are too late. Dinner in the dog."

Had a really good MW appointment this morning. I think she was with us for about an hour and a half... (I'm really getting what I'm paying for with this independent midwife malarky!)

thehouseofmirth · 16/09/2008 14:43

OAU I remember that dinner in the dog cartoon!

Goodness what did your midwife do with you for an hour and a half?!

TinkerBellesMum · 16/09/2008 15:10

I've just realised I've delivered twice in the same hospital and spent 1/4 of my last pregnancy there but have never had a tour of the delivery suite! I don't know anything about it as I was wheeled around during emergencies both times.

Anyone craving? I'm desperate for the mint sauce you get at Indian restaurants and lettuce. Anyone got a good recipe? lol it's not the easiest one to indulge!

I can't find my green notes and I'm losing track of my appointment, am going to have to call them this afternoon.

mrsy · 16/09/2008 15:34

TBM - do you mean raita?

If so then, finely slice 1 cucumber and put it in a seive lined with kitchen paper. Sprinkle on salt and when the liquid has drained (probably about an hour) rinse the salt and pat try. Add to a bowl with about 500ml yogurt (preferably sheep/goats milk), some garlic, lemon juice, oil and mint to taste and stir it all up!
