I think it's time for a new thread! The old one was getting huge...

Hi Uwila, basically they are a proper 3d scan.

here for example

Hi all, glad everyone's keeping well. Had hosp app yesterday, my sugars are way up because i stopped that diabetes diet for a week and pigged out, and they found keytones, anyone know what that means?

Brighteyes · 08/03/2005 10:07

Northstar, I believe ketones are the by-product from when your body starts breaking down fat because there is not enough carbohydrates in your system to make glucose. This is what they aim to achieve on the atkins diet, people on the diet strive to produce more ketones because it means that they are burning fat. Its not such good news if your pregnant or diabetic because the imbalance can cause problems.

In my first trimester when I was admitted to hospital due to severe morning sickness my ketones were very high. This was because I was unable to keep anything down so hence no carbohydrates. They wouldn't discharge me until my ketone levels were normal again.

I hope my explanation is accurate, its about as much as I was able to understand when it was explained to me. I'm assuming if you go back to the recommended diet you was on everything should stabilise.

From those who have been with this thread from the beginning - Did you know Tex111 is now expecting again in November?

I'm so happy for her, cried my eyes out when she left the May thread.

Hoping with all my might that this pregnancy runs smoothly for her.

logic · 08/03/2005 10:39

I'm really glad for her, Brighteyes. Can't believe there are November babies already!

Pregnancy mystery #236: Why is the hair underneath my arms growing at 3 times the normal rate but the hair on my legs has all but stopped growing?

Uwila - the 4th Dimension is time. They put the scan together in real time so you get a moving image basically. Am getting excited now

Brighteyes · 08/03/2005 11:40

Logic I also suffer from the mysterious hair growth syndrome. Pregnancy is certainly weird.

LittleB · 08/03/2005 12:01

So glad to here about Tex111, thanks for letting us know, I really hope all goes well for her this time.
4d scan sounds amazing Holly!
I measured my girth - I'm 38 1/2 inches - how big do we get when we're full term?! I've got 10 weeks to go, which seems like ages when you think about all the growing and back ache etc, but not long at all when I think about what I've got to sort out at home and at work before the baby comes! How long in advance are you all planning to prepare the cot, nursery, wash baby clothes, buy nappies, and pack bags etc? Whats a sensible stage to be 'ready' at? I'm pretty sure mine is going to be late anyway as I was so late (12 days), but you never know!

logic · 08/03/2005 12:54

Time is flying for me too, littleb. I have got everything that I need now. The nursery is still a mess because everything is lumped in there (including ds' big brother present of a pirate ship!) but just needs a tidy up and clean. The pram needs washing; the car seat, moses basket, clothes and bedding are already done. I'm aiming to make up the hospital bag at about 36 weeks. I've got a small pack of newborn nappies to take. I did find that I used hardly any clothes for the baby last time but needed lots of changes for me which is the exact opposite to the instructions that you get given!

Maddison · 08/03/2005 14:04

Hi everybody, I hope you don't mind me crashing this thread!

I'm 30+4 and daren't measure my girth - I feel huge!! And re: the armpit hair - I haven't noticed any unusual spurts of growth but have noticed that from quite early on my tummy has got very fluffy! Has anyone else noticed this?

LittleB · 08/03/2005 14:07

hi, I have a fluffy tummy too - not hairy, just a bit of light fluff, no other strange hair growth patterns though. Thanks for the advice Logic, useful to know about the clothes. Must get the nursery sorted!

Poshpaws · 08/03/2005 14:15

Hi all and welcome Maddison.

Not been posting much (stuff going on at home and feeling quite low when reading about vlost on MN, who I have met a couple of times)

But, pregnancy ticking along. SIL had a baby girl yesterday (bless) 6lb, 9oz. One oz less than DS was.

Very impressed with what some of you ladies have already done. I bought some brand new stuff for Baby - Ds picked a little outfit for it too. Have not organised his big brother present yet (shall do this right now, though via internet - he wants Thomas engines). Old stuff still in loft, not even sorted out Ds' new room and I still seem to think I have loads of time to do things....blissful in my ignorance. You think I would know better

logic · 08/03/2005 14:29

Welcome Maddison!
I don't know who vlost was, poshpaws, but I'm really glad that she got help in the end. I feel so sorry that she got that bad

fisil · 08/03/2005 14:52

Hello Maddison!

It's good to know that most people are at about the same stage as me with getting everything ready. I reckon that we only need to get a few more things, but mostly it's just putting them all in the right place!

I've been having period type pains today - hopefully it's just backache (and probably aches from my cold), but scary!

logic · 08/03/2005 15:33

It could just be that your bump is putting on a growth spurt fisil, but maybe you could phone the midwife just to put your mind at rest? I probably would. How is everything? I've been meaning to ask if you wanted to CAT rather than chat on here.

Are any of you first timers going on the hospital tour soon? Definately worth it. I won't bother this time because I was only there a couple of weeks ago.

OP posts:
LittleB · 08/03/2005 16:27

I'm waiting to hear from my midwife about hospital tours and parent craft classes. I've signed up for a breastfeeding workshop and physiotherapy relaxation classes which are supposed to be great and I think a tour would be useful, but I'm not sure about the other parentcraft classes, I've heard they go through alot of really basic stuff such as what is a C-section, Tens etc, which being an avid mumsnetter I already know! How useful did other people find these - I know alot of my friends didn't bother with them, and dp really doesn't want to go.
I hope your cramps feel better soon Fisil.
I just want to say thanks to everyone so far, mumsnet is great, its so helpful and so nice to be in touch with others in the same situation. I was telling my mum about it at the weekend and she thinks its great, I've found out so many things she didn't know about.

logic · 08/03/2005 16:49

You're right in that the parentcraft classes won't teach you much littleb, but it gives you the opportunity to meet other mums who live really close to you who will have kids the same age. I still meet up with our group 2 + 1/2 years later!

It is amusing to see the midwives attitudes to childbirth in the classes though. We had one who was a 'totally earth mother, everyone should give birth in a field' type, one who advised us to take all the drugs going and one in the middle. Very funny to watch them contradict each other

OP posts:
fisil · 08/03/2005 17:31

yes, definitely go for the tour and the parentcraft classes.

Re my cramps, I was really hoping that someone else would say "oh yes, I'm getting them too." I suppose I'm the elder statesman here (being actually due in April!) so maybe I should go on the April thread and check it out there. I can remember being convinced from about 35 weeks with ds that I was about to go into labour (but didn't until I was over 41 weeks!)

We have decided that we don't have the time or inclination to redecorate the nursery. We painted it yellow with a Winnie-the-Pooh border last time and pine furniture so it'll be fine for either gender.

OP posts:
Tinker · 08/03/2005 18:08

What nursery? Baby will be bunged in our room until we get round to, er, don't know. Am in denial in a 2 bed house

fisil · 08/03/2005 18:37

Tinker, you are so brave! We chucked ds out of our room at 2 weeks, we didn't particularly enjoy sharing with him!

Tinker · 08/03/2005 18:39

Just no choice fisil. Will be an 8 year gap between kids, bit too much to ask them share atm.

Brighteyes · 08/03/2005 18:43

fisil, I've had similar period type pains as you over the last week. I spoke to my midwife and she said it was normal at this stage of pregnancy and nothing to worry about. She just advised warm baths and a couple of paracetamol. She said there was no reason to be alarmed unless I wasn't feeling movements.

Feel so neruotic at times but I'd rather call the midwife and be reassured rather than have the added worry on top of any aches and pains.
