New thread with bisou's title suggestion

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
Beans33 · 04/09/2008 11:10

pixsix posted that about protein without seeing yours - are you ok? Are you feeling ok?

pixsix · 04/09/2008 11:13

Beans yes fine, sorry my post was a bit confusing I was talking about when I had that bleed a few weeks ago, responding to something in missmama's other thread. No probs here at the moment. xxx

kmp1 · 04/09/2008 11:30

Beans my BP is normally around 110/60 but one appointment it was 140/80 and it was all because of a cup of coffee or two immediately before the appointment! Last appt was 119/60 as well and they have always said it's fine

Purple79 · 04/09/2008 11:37

missmama how scary, does everything seem to be ok now? Thinking of you .x

Purple79 · 04/09/2008 11:45

Sorry crossed post with a few of you... Beans hope yr BP settles soon, now you have a reason to take it easy... could be quite nice

Beans33 · 04/09/2008 11:52

That's very true, Purple - I'm not overly worried, just suddenly realised that life's not quite the same as it was!!!

Thanks kmp - glad to hear it's all normal - hurray! Wow, didn't realise that coffee could have such an effect!!

Beans33 · 04/09/2008 12:24

Verso - my shower story was on last post!

Beans33 · 04/09/2008 12:24

thread, I meant, sorry
going mad.

Veggiemummy · 04/09/2008 12:25

missmama haven't had a chance to look at your link but hope your doing better now. I don't know how i would handle a scare. DH will be away for 2 weeks in October to see his sic dad in australia and i am hoping it will all be normal while he is gone.

Beans a slight rise in BP is completely normal as you have more blood to bump around therefore your heart has to pump a little harder therefore a raise in blood pressure. Howeer it is alwasy good to ake it easy and nice your doctor is being on the cautious side rather than just brushing it off.

Olipop · 04/09/2008 12:40

Sorry about all your scaries. God, this pregnancy lark isn't exactly plain sailing is it!
I'm feeling sleepy! It was my birthday yesterday but DS was a bit poorly so I spent the day at work worrying about him and harrassing the nursery. It was only a cold but you know how soppy you get! He 'made' me a beautiful cake...which involved a ready made chocolate cake decorated with my mums entire collection of cake candles and decorations! It was beautiful! It took 20 mins to remove all the adornments before I could cut it!

mibbes · 04/09/2008 13:15

missmama read your thread - porr you, how scary. Glad you are feeling better now and as one of the ladies said just take one day at a time.

Beans don't know anything about blood pressure - I noticed on my notes that mine has changed each time but they have never mentioned it to me so assume that is ok. My mum had very high blood pressure which was triggered by having babies so hope that doesn't happen to me. It is really good that your GP has taken you seriously though and offered to monitor you more closely . I suspect that we could all take the advice from your GP and slow down a bit now - I am a nightmare for getting frustrated with my body when I can't do everything I want to at the speed I want to and bend over as far as I want to ! I think I need to slow down too .

I have MW tomorrow (28 week appt at 27 weeks as have to get blood taken for anti-D whcich I get next week). I really hope they measure my bump as am terrified it is waaay too big after I measured it at way over 30cm the other night !

missmama · 04/09/2008 13:30

Thanks everybody. I feel fine. I did at the time. No pain or even discomfort (exept for the internal - ouch)

It was just the worry that they can and would deliver the baby now if they thought they needed to.

I did get a tour of the labour and post natal wards though and met loads of lovely midwives. I really think my hospital is fantastic and so clean. Their toilets were cleaner than mine

TheInvisibleHand · 04/09/2008 13:44

Wow - so much talking since last time I looked!

Beans - don't worry about the blood pressure - both readings are perfectly normal and in any case, there is a fair amount of randomness in individual readings. Last time I went for a check up, they took my blood pressure and it looked quite high compared to what it had been and all the doctor did was say I needed another reading as it didn't look right. Took it again 10 mins later and completely back down to normal. It could be anything, coffee, rushing in for the appointment, being slightly stressed, whatever!

missmama - glad everything is well for now - hope it all settles down, sounds like it was a bit scary.

indith - congratulations!

Re names - its tricky. DH would have liked to name any DS after his grandfather, but there are two people on my side of the family of the same name who both died young in unfortunate circumstances, one recently. So it doesn't seem right somehow. Re surnames - I use my own, which is unusual (my Dad made it up in his youth - long story!) so I didn't really want to give it up. It's already hyphenated, so would have had the same problem as rosmerta doubling up. DD has DH's surname, which has been fine so far, but I can see that there is potential for confusion...

jumpjockey · 04/09/2008 13:45

Hello all - congrats Indith on your wedding!

Beans - your bp is basically normal for a not-pregnant person, I gather from H that it's quite common for bp to be low during the 2nd tri, so back up to normal in the third is fine, it's only a concern if it goes much above normal (120/80).

missmama - gosh, very glad to hear everything's fine after your adventure. Keep in there a few months longer littlemissmama! Good to hear that the hospital was so nice, that must be a real reassurance.

Names - I was having a real dilemma about this. My mum died when I was little and I was hoping if we have a girl to give her Mum's maiden name as a middle name (it's quite unusual) as it died out with my mum and her sister, they didn't have any brothers. But then I thought, hang on isn't that just carrying on the patriarchal idea that the father's name is what counts ( out with the dingarees and beret!) , and shouldn't it be my mum's name? Problem is, H doesn't like Mum's first name all that much. But it would be an extra middle name - so wouldn't that be ok?

Beans33 · 04/09/2008 14:05

Thanks all - loving the reassurances and am feeling much happier now as a result. THANK YOU!

Re middle names, if we have a girl, I was very keen for her middle name to be Penelope, which was the name of DH's older sister, who died before he was born. I think it's such a pretty name and his parents would be so pleased if we did that. But DH doesn't like it and thinks I'm being maudlin. I haven't really thought of it from the point of view that he might worry about the circumstances of the death and that superstisiously, it might happen again. I think it's so gorgeous, but he got a bit snappy when I mentioned it again. So I will leave it be. It's so hard trying to agree on names, isn't it? One of my friends has just called her little girl Emily Grace - beautiful name! And another one has Madeleine Iris. So sweet!

pixsix · 04/09/2008 14:14

Mibbes good luck with your midwife appointment tomorrow. I wouldn't worry too much about your diy bump measurement, they don't measure to the top of your bump but to the top of your uterus. I don't know about you, but I have quite a lot of trouble identifying where that is for myself but the MW and GP seem to be able to find it by prodding at my tummy. Maybe you measured to the wrong place?

I have been referred to the hospital for a growth scan because of my too-big measurement, but I spoke to them today and they said they can't book me in for an appointment as there aren't any available. i have to phone back tomorrow to 'see if the situation has changed'

The whole thing is turning into a big palaver, especially when I think it's pretty likely that the GP was just bad at measuring (she said herself that MWs are much better at it than GPs....)

Beans33 · 04/09/2008 14:22

Oh pixsix - what a total hassle - poor you! Grrr. But will put your mind at rest if you've been worrying? Hmmm.

Bisou · 04/09/2008 15:37

Yay, new thread! Thanks rosmerta !

Veggiemummy I'm based in Sydney, and it's great being back here again although I did enjoy my 4 years in the UK. I came back as I was offered a full time job here, and it's also nice being back around family. I think DH was getting a bit homesick too. If it makes you feel better though, the weather is a bit rubbish at the moment - it's been kind of dreary grey and a bit rainy the last couple of days. I'll have to look into the Weleda products, it seems like they have them here too after a quick Google search. I was using this before I left but supposedly the company has now been acquired by Colgate who don't have the same stringent policies on animal testing (a bit like the Body Shop being bought by L'Oreal). I also tried one of these whilst in the UK, but it didn't do much for me sadly. I think perhaps because it doesn't 'stop' the sweat I still felt a bit dirty. Anyway I must get back into searching for alternatives - it's hard when you move countries and you have to change all the things you're used to buying!

Speaking of PoisonDwarf MIA, as anyone else noticed that kayzisexpecting hasn't posted for ages either? She was a most prolific poster too for some time there in the earlier threads. Hope they're both ok, and that it's just their busy lives keeping them from frequenting mumsnet!

reban I feel so very lucky to have a job doing something I love so much, and going to work at a place like the Sydney Opera House never loses it's magic! I haven't really sung to my bump directly yet though, because I think the poor bugger already has over-exposure to opera! hehe. I do worry sometimes too when I sing for work that it must be pretty loud in there for such new ears. Although has anyone else seen in the stores that you can now buy devices that you put on your tummy to play music/languages to your unborn child? Whatever will they think of next?

waitinggirl I'll try to think of some stuff to email you with soon! In the meantime, have you also seen the website 'Operamom'? It might be another good place to find information/research if you search the forums; here's a link for you.

Re surnames, I've kept my maiden surname (partly for professional reasons, partly because we couldn't be ar**ed getting all the cards/passport/documents/bank accounts etc changed!) but I've never had a problem with it luckily. I can always sign for things in my husband's name by just saying that I kept my maiden name and no one seems to question it. Hopefully I won't run into probs with the sprog though, I would hate anyone questioning me on the guardianship of my child!

pixsix I can't find the top of my uterus either, I must have too many 'chocolate' layers on top

missmama what a scare that must have been! You seem to be coping with it really well though - I think I'd be in a flap charging round to the specialist demanding a scan asap. Honestly, I think if they've thought it serious enough to hospitalise you, then how difficult would it have been to line one up while you were there? Grr to the NHS! Anyway sorry for my rant, I hope you are feeling better soon... sounds like you deserve to put your feet up and take it easy!

Regards baby names, DH and I luckily agree on most names we've thought up thus far, but when it comes to actually choosing them once bub has arrived, I think DH will just be so astounded with the amount of effort it takes to 'poo a watermelon' that he'll agree to whatever I want. At least, here's hoping!

Olipop · 04/09/2008 16:05

Bisou I meant to say to you about the thyroid thing.....I'm being monitored (actually got a hosp appointment tomorrow) and have had it for years. They had to up me to 175 mg after last check up so hopefully they wont have to do too much more. What dose are you on now?

Veggiemummy · 04/09/2008 16:15

happy birthday for yesterday Olipop sorry it wasn't as relaxing as a birthday should be but that cake sounds so sweet what a lovely thing from DS aren't they wonderful.

Bisou the Opera house so jealous i love that place obvioulsy i have never performed there but have seen loads of stuff there, inc a small play by a friend in one of it's kind of side theater things which i didnt know they had until this one was put on. Thanks for letting me know the weather is crap, maes able to handle this weather better. We are coming home for good in 2010 and though i love it here i thin it is time i will have been here 12 years by then. I use Tom's toothpaste i didnt know they had been bought out. I hope you can find Weleda they do a really lovely baby bath and soap which smells so lovely, as well as the smelly armpit relief.

Beans penelope is a lovely name but can understand if your DH might have a problem with it esp as she died before he was born. I just read a thing in Psychologies about a lady who was born after her sister had died and she had kind of mixed feelings about the whole thing and it quite affected her life.

Webbi · 04/09/2008 16:16

Does anyone know much about post-natal depression? Just came back from the hospital after seeing a consultant who was a bit of an arsehole to say the least! I suffer from mild depression and apparently have a 10% chance of having post-natal depression and that I will have to take anti-depressants. Well I was rather annoyed as I want to breastfeed which he didnt seem to consider at all... Sometimes I think that some people really shouldnt work with people if they cant be personable!
Sorry about the rant...

Olipop · 04/09/2008 16:16

Thank you veggie

Olipop I'm only on 50mcg at the moment, so not a very high dose. I'm so glad to hear they're keeping an eye on your levels. Supposedly it's quite a common thing with many women, that your thyroid just stops doing it's 'thing' effectively and will possibly just need to be monitored for the rest of your life. How depressing!

Veggie - 12 years! I'm impressed. I bet your family here will really make fun of your accent when you get back. They certainly did with me, and I didn't think I sounded British at all!

Webbi I wish I could offer some advice about PND, but I don't know enough about it to be of use. Sounds like the consultant didn't do much to help with explaining things through with you though, so I would suggest asking someone else (perhaps a midwife or your doctor?) about where you might be able to get some more information. I think here in Australia they give you a leaflet at your booking in which tells you where you can get more help and advice about it - does anyone know if there is something similar in the UK?

Anyway I must get to bed... it's after 1.30am! (Good training for when the baby's here) zzzz

Veggiemummy · 04/09/2008 16:36

wow good memory Bisou Webbi that is unfortunate that he is treating you like a statistic rather than individually also i think there are things you can d to prevent the chances of post natal depression, i've heard having the full week bonding with the baby after and not doing much else but staying and being looked after by DH/DP or family members and having as few visitors as possible can help. Also my SIL and a close friend had to go on antiidepressants for postnatal depression and i think they breastfed with them. MY SIL didnt BF for very long but my friend def did. I'm not sure though someone else here may know. It might be good to talk to a Midwife about this as they would know more. I do know they will ask you some dumb standard question afterwards as they do with every new mum to assertain if you are possible suffering from postnatal depression. My brother has Bipolar disorder and so i am apparently also a risk but luckily didnt and also didnt come in contact with stupid doctors.
