I'm all for hearing about the worst case scenarios, but a friend of my sister's was telling me at the weekend that she had her baby in 3 hours flat. So far so good... Then she told me that she ripped completely from her fanny to her bottom and had to have complicated surgery afterwards! Oh God! Makes my eyes water now. She and her husband didn't have sex for over a year afterwards!!!! BUT she did then go on to have a 2nd child, so it can't have been THAT bad! Oh dear GOD! I'm terrified! Mustn't think about it too much - millions of women go through childbirth every day! That's what I keep teling myself!

LadyThompson · 10/09/2008 17:13

Well Beans, I read about someone on a thread this week who had a fourth degree tear (I think similar to what you describe) when she was in a birthing pool. But she didn't even realise this had happened until she got out of the pool. So that's SOMETHING I suppose.

LadyThompson · 10/09/2008 17:16

Off for spewy glucose test and bloods now, night all

Beans33 · 10/09/2008 17:19

good luck, LT - are you very hungry?

hope it goes ok

x

Beans33 · 10/09/2008 17:47

Bye everyone - I'm heading off to do some serious telly watching. DH out tonight, so place to myself for doing nothing!

JamInMyWellies · 10/09/2008 18:25

Good luck LadyT.

No leaky boobs here although same as you OLI DS uses them to dig his elbows in all the time bloody hurts. Those of you whose nips are in a bad way slap some lanisoh on to them it will help.

Welcome back hiccymapops.

Oh emma I too am in Essex moved from E London a few months ago although I have n idea if Epping is near me I live near Braintree.

kmp1 · 10/09/2008 18:59

LT I'm the other section booked in for the 10th! Not twins though - a boy - big one though apparently!

chutneymary · 10/09/2008 19:52

Hello ladies

Had my booking at St Thomas's today and it was LOVELY. I am another section, which I found out today will probably be end of November! Oh dear - I had the 8th Dec in my mind but apparently they don't let third timers go much over 38 weeks. That is 11 weeks away. I was also planning to finish work in Dec, but I guess I'll have other plans.

LadyT - I felt fine after section 1 after a week. Section 2 was worse because of the baby's position so it was quite rough and I was bashed up. Felt normal after about 10 days though. Wouldn't drive til at least 4 weeks though as you need to be able to do a hard brake without guarding your tummy. I mainlined arnica in the 2nd pg and it really helped. With the first section, I didn't need any pain relief after I left hospital (4 days) so it is possible to bounce back. I was younger then and very fit, which makes a difference. I am older and slightly flabbier now, which is less good. In fact, I am measuring 32cm at 27 weeks so the MW predicted another big one. At least my fanny will be spared!

Welcome Emma and nanni. Good to have you on board.

No linea ever for me Beans. I am very fair though (as I think are you?) and apparently we get them but you can't see them! I am jealous of leaking boobs though - in nearly 3 years of BF (spread over 2 children) I have used 2 breast pads and never leaked a drop. Must just have tight boob valves. Plenty of milk though. My friend would gush just by thinking of her baby, but I had to do some good squeezing even once BF established to get anything.

Off to watch "the restaurant" in a minute. Think Raymond Blanc is quite attractive. Saw a picture of Gordon and Tanaya today and they both looked terrible. Gordon is very blond and Tana very orange. I am not sure I would find G so attractive if he weren't so rich and successful. How shallow am I?

LT: hope the GTT went OK.

Turnip: good for you getting the GP to give you something that seems to work. Hope it helps.

Poisondwarf: if you are a sling I have a Wilkinet you'd be v welcome to and and Ergo yhou could borrow, though you'd need to get a newborn insert for the latter. Both much better for your back than a baby bjorn. Let me know if you'd like to try either and I can bring them to the meet-up (if you;re coming) or we could always meet up in Hackney at some point if you like. I am normally to be found mooching about with the boy on Wednesdays (can't remember if you work f/t).

more info on each here:

EffiePerine · 10/09/2008 20:39

after a sling that should be

majormoo · 10/09/2008 21:33

Turnip good news re your SIL. I am a bit lost with the thread but wanted to give you my sympathies on the piles front. I had them with both my kids from about 33 weeks and it was agony. Really hope the spray helps. Lots of baths used to soothe mine. I am praying they will not return for me in a few weeks.

Hatty in regards to the pain of labour, I am with Turnip and would say that piles is much harder to bear.

JamInMyWellies · 10/09/2008 21:46

Turnip I must have missed your news re niece while I was on holiday glad to hear all is oging well.

On the piles front I was told after having DS that if they were really bad the midwife could give a supposeterie(sp?)which would help. I have found half a tube of prepH gel works a treat.

EffiePerine · 11/09/2008 09:15

agree re labour pain, sounds a bit of a cop-out but it is a different kind of pain to intense chronic pain - at least you know that a) there is a point to it and b) it will stop! I had an ear infection after having DS and IMO that was far worse (and went on for longer). People who've had bad toothache say the same.

zoejeanne · 11/09/2008 09:26

Morning all. effie very pleased to read your comment about toothache being worse than labour - I've always maintained that toothache is the worst pain in the world, and knowing I did survive that makes me feel better about giving birth. Sympathy on the piles to those sufferers - luckily I've never had them, and strongly wishing it stays that way, by the sounds of it.

turnip v pleased to hear your niece is progressing so well. And despair at all farmers - my DH is the opposite of your uncle, and is expecting me to behave just like a sheep - he even did a demo of how sheep breathe in labour and suggested I practise that . He also kindly tells people he spent this spring 'conditioning me for pregnancy, just like a ewe' as I went on a new year diet and conceived the week my BMI dipped below 25 for the first time (not sure if that's a coincidence). Love him really, honest

turnip I've had those thought too, and have been desparately trying to banish them - one big reason why I've opted for hopsital and not home birth . And now I've got the All Creatures Great and Small theme tune in my head ... Glad to hear you're more comfortable today

emmanbump · 11/09/2008 10:10

JamInMyWellies I know where Braintree is roughly at least I know the freeport shopping area. I'm about a 40 min drive from there.

I also used to live in East London. Where were you before.

I can see that you are planning on having your baby at St. John's Chelmsford, oddly enough that is where I was born (long story) but lived my whole life in East London until about 18 months ago.

DH felt our baby move last night for the first time

Beans33 · 11/09/2008 10:23

Oh well done, Emma's DH! Did it make you cry? It made me a bit when DH got so excited about it! But then I'm a total wetty!

Am back at work today - and last night I didn't manage to get to sleep til 1.30am! Yuck. Not sure I'm going to manage a whole day, though, as am coughing massively and everyone giving me rather disgusted looks!!! Oops. Think I'll be sent home. - YAY!

reban · 11/09/2008 10:34

Hi all .. yes i can confirm that there are lots of pains worse than labour pains and thats not in a smug, i dont know what all the fuss about it is type of way, it is just our bodies are set up to cope with it. I am a wimp in general, but i have managed three labours without pain relief and fully advocate it. Although on receiving the injection they gave me in my thigh straight after the birth to hurry the placenta along, i turned to the midwife and said "ow that hurt" she did look at me like i was mad!

Also re quick labour its not always the best, my second was 4 1/2 hours and third was 3 hours and you dont really get a chance to get used to the idea that you are in labour as the contractions start hard and fast! I have asked my midwife if she expects this labour to be quicker and she worryingly said "dont worry we'll be prepared for a homebirth" .. i really support those who want a homebirth but i really, really dont .. so first contraction we will be at breakneck speed to the hospital, hopefully without 3 children in tow

Welcomme Emma hope your pregnancy is progressing well

Turnip i would love to meet up next week but it might be difficult as i start college and my ds1 starts nursery, but let me know when you will be around!

Quite jealous of leaky boobs, never had them in pregnany but they are def tender. Just hope i can manage to breastfeed this time. With ds2 i only managed about 5 weeks exclusive breastfeeding as i had ds1 (14 months old at the time) climbing all over me ever time i tried to feed the LO.

I will attempt to upload some photos again today and try not to crash the site

SummerLightning · 11/09/2008 10:47

Hi everyone, bit grumpy today, feeling overwhelmed by stuff to organise, how do we have so much crap around our house??? (and is this grumpy feeling called "nesting" if you don't actually do anything about it?? )
Must get organised re baby stuff. Sheesh, bought nothing yet. We are meant to be getting some freebies from some friends, said to DH this morning "Don't you think we should buy some new things for poor little sproggie, I feel guilty" and he laughed and pointed out that one way or another we will end up spending lots of money on him!! Which is a good point so I don't feel so tight fisted now!

Went to yoga last night and one girl who is 19 weeks is looking into nurseries already!!! Is it just me or is this crazy....apparently some round us are booked up til November next year, which is probably about when mine would start, so have got onto organising that!!!!

Oh and still not jealous of the leaky boobs!!

Sorry just wittering on now...

rosmerta · 11/09/2008 10:48

morning all, another early start for me today but dh kindly got up with ds which gave me a bit longer in bed!

Hi emma nice to see you here!

turnip glad you're getting some relief!

beans I really think you should take yourself off home, you don't want to pass germs onto anyone else

I was quite surprised by how labour didn't hurt as much as I thought it would, & I have a very low pain threshold! I also didn't have any pain relief, but I did have a very long latent labour before it really got going so I think my body got used to it all bit by bit.

OP posts:
Beans33 · 11/09/2008 11:06

Thanks rosmerta - I will probably bugger off fairly soon - feeling a little bit ropey. just got a few bits and bobs to do... Then home - hurray!

Beans33 · 11/09/2008 11:06

PS Great to hear that labour didn't hurt as much as expected - hope it's the same for all of us! would be brilliant!

LadyThompson · 11/09/2008 11:19

Morning lovely ladies,

GTT test was fine but that sugary drink made me feel very tiiiiiiiiiired which I take to be a bad sign! Won't know for a few days anyhoo.

KMP1, of COURSE, it's you. So you are booked for 10 Nov? Wow, that's exciting. Are you nervous? It looks like I will be done on 25 Nov. I knew you weren't expecting twins, I was referring to Hatty's section with her last time!

Chutney - brilliant, you are now officially the thread expert on sections. Pleased you are back on board at St T's, that must be a huge relief. What did you mean about your second section being rough because your baby was in a strange position? My baby is very high and currently diagonal, after spending a lot of time transverse, so if this continues I fear they will have to have a bit of a rummage Thanks for the tip off about The Restaurant starting. Gordon Ramsay is a great chef, but a right tit.

Turnip - sorry to hear of your crap GP. I don't have a lot of faith in GPs. I know it probably sounds a bit drastic but later on, have you thought of surgery for them? I know someone who had this and was v happy with it. You can't go on with this, it sounds so debilitating. So glad your niece is coming out. I love the Bullring! Great Selfridges.

Effie, HOW many slings do you actually own?

Beans, glad you are feeling better but at the same time, hope you get sent home!

Zoe - you are a proper country girl!

SL - I know where you are coming from re: grumpiness and tidying. DP's flat is hell and given that me and a tiny babe will be living there most of the time, he needs to sort himself out. He is getting his mother to come to help him one weekend in October when I am not there...hmmm.

FINALLY, re: pain, when I had my kidney stones, I didn't wish I was dead exactly, but it would have been a relief. Just horrendous. I doubt the pain after a cs will top this, though I could be very wrong!
